Vertex nomination: The canonical sampling and the extended spectral nomination schemes

Suppose that one particular block in a stochastic block model is of interest, but block labels are only observed for a few of the vertices in the network. Utilizing a graph realized from the model and the observed block labels, the vertex nomination task is to order the vertices with unobserved block labels into a ranked nomination list with the goal of having an abundance of interesting vertices near the top of the list. There are vertex nomination schemes in the literature, including the optimally precise canonical nomination scheme~$\mathcal{L}^C$ and the consistent spectral partitioning nomination scheme~$\mathcal{L}^P$. While the canonical nomination scheme $\mathcal{L}^C$ is provably optimally precise, it is computationally intractable, being impractical to implement even on modestly sized graphs. With this in mind, an approximation of the canonical scheme---denoted the {\it canonical sampling nomination scheme} $\mathcal{L}^{CS}$---is introduced; $\mathcal{L}^{CS}$ relies on a scalable, Markov chain Monte Carlo-based approximation of $\mathcal{L}^{C}$, and converges to $\mathcal{L}^{C}$ as the amount of sampling goes to infinity. The spectral partitioning nomination scheme is also extended to the {\it extended spectral partitioning nomination scheme}, $\mathcal{L}^{EP}$, which introduces a novel semisupervised clustering framework to improve upon the precision of $\mathcal{L}^P$. Real-data and simulation experiments are employed to illustrate the precision of these vertex nomination schemes, as well as their empirical computational complexity. We study the motion of smooth, closed, strictly convex hypersurfaces in Rn+1 expanding in the direction of their normal vector field with speed depending on the k-th elementary symmetric polynomial of the principal radii of curvature. As an application, we gives a unifed fow approach to Lp-Christoffel-Minkowski problem for p > 1.

Flow by Gauss curvature to Dual Orlicz-Minkowski problems

In this paper we study a normalised anisotropic Gauss curvature flow of strictly convex, closed hypersurfaces in the Euclidean space R^n+1. We prove that the flow exists for all time and converges smoothly to the unique, strictly convex solution of a Monge-Amp`ere type equation. Our argument provides a parabolic proof in the smooth category for the existence of solutions to the Dual Orlicz-Minkowski problem introduced by Zhu, Xing and Ye.

Sparse Representation Classification Beyond L1 Minimization and the Subspace Assumption

The sparse representation classifier (SRC) has been utilized in various classification problems, which makes use of L1 minimization and works well for image recognition satisfying a subspace assumption. In this paper we propose a new implementation of SRC via screening, establish its equivalence to the original SRC under regularity conditions, and prove its classification consistency under a latent subspace model and contamination. The results are demonstrated via simulations and real data experiments, where the new algorithm achieves comparable numerical performance and significantly faster.

FFusionCGAN: An end-to-end fusion method for few-focus images using conditional GAN in cytopathological digital slides

Multi-focus image fusion technologies compress different focus depth images into an image in which most objects are in focus. However, although existing image fusion techniques, including traditional algorithms and deep learning-based algorithms, can generate high-quality fused images, they need multiple images with different focus depths in the same field of view. This criterion may not be met in some cases where time efficiency is required or the hardware is insufficient. The problem is especially prominent in large-size whole slide images. This paper focused on the multi-focus image fusion of cytopathological digital slide images, and proposed a novel method for generating fused images from single-focus or few-focus images based on conditional generative adversarial network (GAN). Through the adversarial learning of the generator and discriminator, the method is capable of generating fused images with clear textures and large depth of field. Combined with the characteristics of cytopathological images, this paper designs a new generator architecture combining U-Net and DenseBlock, which can effectively improve the network's receptive field and comprehensively encode image features. Meanwhile, this paper develops a semantic segmentation network that identifies the blurred regions in cytopathological images. By integrating the network into the generative model, the quality of the generated fused images is effectively improved. Our method can generate fused images from only single-focus or few-focus images, thereby avoiding the problem of collecting multiple images of different focus depths with increased time and hardware costs. Furthermore, our model is designed to learn the direct mapping of input source images to fused images without the need to manually design complex activity level measurements and fusion rules as in traditional methods.

Mathematical models for cell migration: a nonlocal perspective

We provide a review of recent advancements in nonlocal continuous models for migration, mainly from the perspective of its involvement in embryonal development and cancer invasion. Particular emphasis is placed on spatial nonlocality occurring in advection terms, used to characterise a cell's motility bias according to its interactions with other cellular and acellular components in its vicinity (e.g., cell-cell and cell-tissue adhesions, nonlocal chemotaxis), but we also shortly address spatially nonlocal source terms. Following a brief introduction and motivation, we give a systematic classification of available PDE models with respect to the type of featured nonlocalities and review some of the mathematical challenges arising from such models, with a focus on analytical aspects. Keywords: cell-cell and cell-tissue adhesion; nonlocal and local chemotaxis; haptotaxis; classes of nonlocal models; integro-differential equations; mathematical challenges.

Robust Federated Learning with Noisy Communication

Federated learning is a communication-efficient training process that alternates between local training at the edge devices and averaging the updated local model at the central server. Nevertheless, it is impractical to achieve a perfect acquisition of the local models in wireless communication due to noise, which also brings serious effects on federated learning. To tackle this challenge, we propose a robust design for federated learning to alleviate the effects of noise in this paper. Considering noise in the two aforementioned steps, we first formulate the training problem as a parallel optimization for each node under the expectation-based model and the worst-case model. Due to the non-convexity of the problem, a regularization for the loss function approximation method is proposed to make it tractable. Regarding the worst-case model, we develop a feasible training scheme which utilizes the sampling-based successive convex approximation algorithm to tackle the unavailable maxima or minima noise condition and the non-convex issue of the objective function. Furthermore, the convergence rates of both new designs are analyzed from a theoretical point of view. Finally, the improvement of prediction accuracy and the reduction of loss function are demonstrated via simulations for the proposed designs.

Dense Dilated Network with Probability Regularized Walk for Vessel Detection

The detection of retinal vessel is of great importance in the diagnosis and treatment of many ocular diseases. Many methods have been proposed for vessel detection. However, most of the algorithms neglect the connectivity of the vessels, which plays an important role in the diagnosis. In this paper, we propose a novel method for retinal vessel detection. The proposed method includes a dense dilated network to get an initial detection of the vessels and a probability regularized walk algorithm to address the fracture issue in the initial detection. The dense dilated network integrates newly proposed dense dilated feature extraction blocks into an encoder-decoder structure to extract and accumulate features at different scales. A multiscale Dice loss function is adopted to train the network. To improve the connectivity of the segmented vessels, we also introduce a probability regularized walk algorithm to connect the broken vessels. The proposed method has been applied on three public data sets: DRIVE, STARE and CHASE_DB1. The results show that the proposed method outperforms the state-of-the-art methods in accuracy, sensitivity, specificity and also are under receiver operating characteristic curve.

Timing analysis of Swift J1658.2-4242's outburst in 2018 with Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate Swift J1658.2-4242 during its 2018 outburst with the observations of Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT), Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) and AstroSat in 0.1-250keV. The evolution of intensity, hardness and integrated fractional root mean square (rms) observed by Insight-HXMT and NICER are presented in this paper. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (0.8-3.5Hz) and Insight-HXMT (1-1.6Hz) are also reported in this work. The features of the QPOs are analysed with an energy range of 0.5-50keV. The relations between QPO frequency and other characteristics such as intensity, hardness and QPO rms are carefully studied. The timing and spectral properties indicate that Swift J1658.2-4242 is a black hole binary system. Besides, the rms spectra of the source calculated from the simultaneous observation of Insight-HXMT, NICER and AstroSat support the Lense-Thirring origin of the QPOs. The relation between QPO phase lag and the centroid frequency of Swift J1658.2-4242 reveals a near zero constant when < 4Hz and a soft phase lag at 6.68 Hz. This independence follows the same trend as the high inclination galactic black hole binaries such as MAXI J1659-152.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.

Accelerating Federated Learning via Momentum Gradient Descent

Federated learning (FL) provides a communication-efficient approach to solve machine learning problems concerning distributed data, without sending raw data to a central server. However, existing works on FL only utilize first-order gradient descent (GD) and do not consider the preceding iterations to gradient update which can potentially accelerate convergence. In this paper, we consider momentum term which relates to the last iteration. The proposed momentum federated learning (MFL) uses momentum gradient descent (MGD) in the local update step of FL system. We establish global convergence properties of MFL and derive an upper bound on MFL convergence rate. Comparing the upper bounds on MFL and FL convergence rate, we provide conditions in which MFL accelerates the convergence. For different machine learning models, the convergence performance of MFL is evaluated based on experiments with MNIST dataset. Simulation results comfirm that MFL is globally convergent and further reveal significant convergence improvement over FL.

Direct comparison of many-body methods for realistic electronic Hamiltonians

A large collaboration carefully benchmarks 20 first principles many-body electronic structure methods on a test set of 7 transition metal atoms, and their ions and monoxides. Good agreement is attained between the 3 systematically converged methods, resulting in experiment-free reference values. These reference values are used to assess the accuracy of modern emerging and scalable approaches to the many-electron problem. The most accurate methods obtain energies indistinguishable from experimental results, with the agreement mainly limited by the experimental uncertainties. Comparison between methods enables a unique perspective on calculations of many-body systems of electrons.

Lattice distortion induced first and second order topological phase transition in rectangular high-T$_{\rm c}$ superconducting monolayer

We theoretically study the lattice distortion induced first and second order topological phase transition in rectangular FeSe$_{x}$Te$_{1-x}$ monolayer. When compressing the lattice constant in one direction, our first principles calculation shows that the FeSe$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ undergoes a band inversion at $Γ$ point in a wide dopping range, say $x\in(0.0,0.7)$, which ensures coexistence of the topological band state and the high-T$_{\rm c}$ superconductivity. This unidirectional pressure also leads to the C$_4$ symmetry breaking which is necessary for the monolayer FeSe$_x$Te$_{1-x}$ to support Majorana corner states in the either presence or absence of time-reversal symmetry. Particularly, we use $k\cdot p$ methods to fit the band structure from the first principles calculation and found that the edge states along the $(100)$ and $(010)$ directions have different Dirac energy due to C$_4$ symmetry breaking. This is essential to obtain Majorana corner states in D class without concerning the details of the superconducting pairing symmetries and Zeeman form, which can potentially bring advantages in the experimental implementation.
