Cluster-Induced Mask Transformers for Effective Opportunistic Gastric Cancer Screening on Non-contrast CT Scans

Gastric cancer is the third leading cause of cancer-related mortality worldwide, but no guideline-recommended screening test exists. Existing methods can be invasive, expensive, and lack sensitivity to identify early-stage gastric cancer. In this study, we explore the feasibility of using a deep learning approach on non-contrast CT scans for gastric cancer detection. We propose a novel cluster-induced Mask Transformer that jointly segments the tumor and classifies abnormality in a multi-task manner. Our model incorporates learnable clusters that encode the texture and shape prototypes of gastric cancer, utilizing self- and cross-attention to interact with convolutional features. In our experiments, the proposed method achieves a sensitivity of 85.0% and specificity of 92.6% for detecting gastric tumors on a hold-out test set consisting of 100 patients with cancer and 148 normal. In comparison, two radiologists have an average sensitivity of 73.5% and specificity of 84.3%. We also obtain a specificity of 97.7% on an external test set with 903 normal cases. Our approach performs comparably to established state-of-the-art gastric cancer screening tools like blood testing and endoscopy, while also being more sensitive in detecting early-stage cancer. This demonstrates the potential of our approach as a novel, non-invasive, low-cost, and accurate method for opportunistic gastric cancer screening.

Towards Efficient In-memory Computing Hardware for Quantized Neural Networks: State-of-the-art, Open Challenges and Perspectives

The amount of data processed in the cloud, the development of Internet-of-Things (IoT) applications, and growing data privacy concerns force the transition from cloud-based to edge-based processing. Limited energy and computational resources on edge push the transition from traditional von Neumann architectures to In-memory Computing (IMC), especially for machine learning and neural network applications. Network compression techniques are applied to implement a neural network on limited hardware resources. Quantization is one of the most efficient network compression techniques allowing to reduce the memory footprint, latency, and energy consumption. This paper provides a comprehensive review of IMC-based Quantized Neural Networks (QNN) and links software-based quantization approaches to IMC hardware implementation. Moreover, open challenges, QNN design requirements, recommendations, and perspectives along with an IMC-based QNN hardware roadmap are provided.

SUIT: Learning Significance-guided Information for 3D Temporal Detection

3D object detection from LiDAR point cloud is of critical importance for autonomous driving and robotics. While sequential point cloud has the potential to enhance 3D perception through temporal information, utilizing these temporal features effectively and efficiently remains a challenging problem. Based on the observation that the foreground information is sparsely distributed in LiDAR scenes, we believe sufficient knowledge can be provided by sparse format rather than dense maps. To this end, we propose to learn Significance-gUided Information for 3D Temporal detection (SUIT), which simplifies temporal information as sparse features for information fusion across frames. Specifically, we first introduce a significant sampling mechanism that extracts information-rich yet sparse features based on predicted object centroids. On top of that, we present an explicit geometric transformation learning technique, which learns the object-centric transformations among sparse features across frames. We evaluate our method on large-scale nuScenes and Waymo dataset, where our SUIT not only significantly reduces the memory and computation cost of temporal fusion, but also performs well over the state-of-the-art baselines.

RTMPose: Real-Time Multi-Person Pose Estimation based on MMPose

Recent studies on 2D pose estimation have achieved excellent performance on public benchmarks, yet its application in the industrial community still suffers from heavy model parameters and high latency. In order to bridge this gap, we empirically explore key factors in pose estimation including paradigm, model architecture, training strategy, and deployment, and present a high-performance real-time multi-person pose estimation framework, RTMPose, based on MMPose. Our RTMPose-m achieves 75.8% AP on COCO with 90+ FPS on an Intel i7-11700 CPU and 430+ FPS on an NVIDIA GTX 1660 Ti GPU, and RTMPose-l achieves 67.0% AP on COCO-WholeBody with 130+ FPS. To further evaluate RTMPose's capability in critical real-time applications, we also report the performance after deploying on the mobile device. Our RTMPose-s achieves 72.2% AP on COCO with 70+ FPS on a Snapdragon 865 chip, outperforming existing open-source libraries. Code and models are released at https://github.com/open-mmlab/mmpose/tree/1.x/projects/rtmpose.

MCPI: Integrating Multimodal Data for Enhanced Prediction of Compound Protein Interactions

The identification of compound-protein interactions (CPI) plays a critical role in drug screening, drug repurposing, and combination therapy studies. The effectiveness of CPI prediction relies heavily on the features extracted from both compounds and target proteins. While various prediction methods employ different feature combinations, both molecular-based and network-based models encounter the common obstacle of incomplete feature representations. Thus, a promising solution to this issue is to fully integrate all relevant CPI features. This study proposed a novel model named MCPI, which is designed to improve the prediction performance of CPI by integrating multiple sources of information, including the PPI network, CCI network, and structural features of CPI. The results of the study indicate that the MCPI model outperformed other existing methods for predicting CPI on public datasets. Furthermore, the study has practical implications for drug development, as the model was applied to search for potential inhibitors among FDA-approved drugs in response to the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. The prediction results were then validated through the literature, suggesting that the MCPI model could be a useful tool for identifying potential drug candidates. Overall, this study has the potential to advance our understanding of CPI and guide drug development efforts.

CD-CTFM: A Lightweight CNN-Transformer Network for Remote Sensing Cloud Detection Fusing Multiscale Features

Clouds in remote sensing images inevitably affect information extraction, which hinder the following analysis of satellite images. Hence, cloud detection is a necessary preprocessing procedure. However, the existing methods have numerous calculations and parameters. In this letter, a lightweight CNN-Transformer network, CD-CTFM, is proposed to solve the problem. CD-CTFM is based on encoder-decoder architecture and incorporates the attention mechanism. In the decoder part, we utilize a lightweight network combing CNN and Transformer as backbone, which is conducive to extract local and global features simultaneously. Moreover, a lightweight feature pyramid module is designed to fuse multiscale features with contextual information. In the decoder part, we integrate a lightweight channel-spatial attention module into each skip connection between encoder and decoder, extracting low-level features while suppressing irrelevant information without introducing many parameters. Finally, the proposed model is evaluated on two cloud datasets, 38-Cloud and MODIS. The results demonstrate that CD-CTFM achieves comparable accuracy as the state-of-art methods. At the same time, CD-CTFM outperforms state-of-art methods in terms of efficiency.

Answering Compositional Queries with Set-Theoretic Embeddings

The need to compactly and robustly represent item-attribute relations arises in many important tasks, such as faceted browsing and recommendation systems. A popular machine learning approach for this task denotes that an item has an attribute by a high dot-product between vectors for the item and attribute -- a representation that is not only dense, but also tends to correct noisy and incomplete data. While this method works well for queries retrieving items by a single attribute (such as \emph{movies that are comedies}), we find that vector embeddings do not so accurately support compositional queries (such as movies that are comedies and British but not romances). To address these set-theoretic compositions, this paper proposes to replace vectors with box embeddings, a region-based representation that can be thought of as learnable Venn diagrams. We introduce a new benchmark dataset for compositional queries, and present experiments and analysis providing insights into the behavior of both. We find that, while vector and box embeddings are equally suited to single attribute queries, for compositional queries box embeddings provide substantial advantages over vectors, particularly at the moderate and larger retrieval set sizes that are most useful for users' search and browsing.

Video Compression with Arbitrary Rescaling Network

Most video platforms provide video streaming services with different qualities, and the quality of the services is usually adjusted by the resolution of the videos. So high-resolution videos need to be downsampled for compression. In order to solve the problem of video coding at different resolutions, we propose a rate-guided arbitrary rescaling network (RARN) for video resizing before encoding. To help the RARN be compatible with standard codecs and generate compression-friendly results, an iteratively optimized transformer-based virtual codec (TVC) is introduced to simulate the key components of video encoding and perform bitrate estimation. By iteratively training the TVC and the RARN, we achieved 5%-29% BD-Rate reduction anchored by linear interpolation under different encoding configurations and resolutions, exceeding the previous methods on most test videos. Furthermore, the lightweight RARN structure can process FHD (1080p) content at real-time speed (91 FPS) and obtain a considerable rate reduction.

Real higher-order Weyl photonic crystal

Higher-order Weyl semimetals are a family of recently predicted topological phases simultaneously showcasing unconventional properties derived from Weyl points, such as chiral anomaly, and multidimensional topological phenomena originating from higher-order topology. The higher-order Weyl semimetal phases, with their higher-order topology arising from quantized dipole or quadrupole bulk polarizations, have been demonstrated in phononics and circuits. Here, we experimentally discover a class of higher-order Weyl semimetal phase in a three-dimensional photonic crystal (PhC), exhibiting the concurrence of the surface and hinge Fermi arcs from the nonzero Chern number and the nontrivial generalized real Chern number, respectively, coined a real higher-order Weyl PhC. Notably, the projected two-dimensional subsystem with kz = 0 is a real Chern insulator, belonging to the Stiefel-Whitney class with real Bloch wavefunctions, which is distinguished fundamentally from the Chern class with complex Bloch wavefunctions. Our work offers an ideal photonic platform for exploring potential applications and material properties associated with the higher-order Weyl points and the Stiefel-Whitney class of topological phases.

propnet: Propagating 2D Annotation to 3D Segmentation for Gastric Tumors on CT Scans

**Background:** Accurate 3D CT scan segmentation of gastric tumors is pivotal for diagnosis and treatment. The challenges lie in the irregular shapes, blurred boundaries of tumors, and the inefficiency of existing methods. **Purpose:** We conducted a study to introduce a model, utilizing human-guided knowledge and unique modules, to address the challenges of 3D tumor segmentation. **Methods:** We developed the PropNet framework, propagating radiologists' knowledge from 2D annotations to the entire 3D space. This model consists of a proposing stage for coarse segmentation and a refining stage for improved segmentation, using two-way branches for enhanced performance and an up-down strategy for efficiency. **Results:** With 98 patient scans for training and 30 for validation, our method achieves a significant agreement with manual annotation (Dice of 0.803) and improves efficiency. The performance is comparable in different scenarios and with various radiologists' annotations (Dice between 0.785 and 0.803). Moreover, the model shows improved prognostic prediction performance (C-index of 0.620 vs. 0.576) on an independent validation set of 42 patients with advanced gastric cancer. **Conclusions:** Our model generates accurate tumor segmentation efficiently and stably, improving prognostic performance and reducing high-throughput image reading workload. This model can accelerate the quantitative analysis of gastric tumors and enhance downstream task performance.

Observation of vortex-string chiral modes in metamaterials

As a hypothetical topological defect in the geometry of spacetime, vortex strings play a crucial role in shaping the clusters of galaxies that exist today, and their distinct features can provide observable clues about the early universe's evolution. A key feature of vortex strings is that they can interact with Weyl fermionic modes and support topological chiral-anomaly states with massless dispersions at the core of strings. To date, despite many attempts to detect vortex strings in astrophysics or to emulate them in artificially created systems, observation of these topological vortex-string chiral modes remains experimentally elusive. Here we report the experimental observation of such vortex-string chiral modes using a metamaterial system. This is implemented by inhomogeneous perturbation of a Yang-monopole phononic metamaterial. The measured linear dispersion and modal profiles confirm the existence of topological modes bound to and propagating along the vortex string with the chiral anomaly. Our work not only provides a platform for studying diverse cosmic topological defects in astrophysics but also offers intriguing device applications as topological fibres in signal processing and communication techniques.

Generative Model Watermarking Suppressing High-Frequency Artifacts

Protecting deep neural networks (DNNs) against intellectual property (IP) infringement has attracted an increasing attention in recent years. Recent advances focus on IP protection of generative models, which embed the watermark information into the image generated by the model to be protected. Although the generated marked image has good visual quality, it introduces noticeable artifacts to the marked image in high-frequency area, which severely impairs the imperceptibility of the watermark and thereby reduces the security of the watermarking system. To deal with this problem, in this paper, we propose a novel framework for generative model watermarking that can suppress those high-frequency artifacts. The main idea of the proposed framework is to design a new watermark embedding network that can suppress high-frequency artifacts by applying anti-aliasing. To realize anti-aliasing, we use low-pass filtering for the internal sampling layers of the new watermark embedding network. Meanwhile, joint loss optimization and adversarial training are applied to enhance the effectiveness and robustness. Experimental results indicate that the marked model not only maintains the performance very well on the original task, but also demonstrates better imperceptibility and robustness on the watermarking task. This work reveals the importance of suppressing high-frequency artifacts for enhancing imperceptibility and security of generative model watermarking.

DrugChat: Towards Enabling ChatGPT-Like Capabilities on Drug Molecule Graphs

A ChatGPT-like system for drug compounds could be a game-changer in pharmaceutical research, accelerating drug discovery, enhancing our understanding of structure-activity relationships, guiding lead optimization, aiding drug repurposing, reducing the failure rate, and streamlining clinical trials. In this work, we make an initial attempt towards enabling ChatGPT-like capabilities on drug molecule graphs, by developing a prototype system DrugChat. DrugChat works in a similar way as ChatGPT. Users upload a compound molecule graph and ask various questions about this compound. DrugChat will answer these questions in a multi-turn, interactive manner. The DrugChat system consists of a graph neural network (GNN), a large language model (LLM), and an adaptor. The GNN takes a compound molecule graph as input and learns a representation for this graph. The adaptor transforms the graph representation produced by the GNN into another representation that is acceptable to the LLM. The LLM takes the compound representation transformed by the adaptor and users' questions about this compound as inputs and generates answers. All these components are trained end-to-end. To train DrugChat, we collected instruction tuning datasets which contain 10,834 drug compounds and 143,517 question-answer pairs. The code and data is available at \url{https://github.com/UCSD-AI4H/drugchat}

Single-view Neural Radiance Fields with Depth Teacher

Neural Radiance Fields (NeRF) have been proposed for photorealistic novel view rendering. However, it requires many different views of one scene for training. Moreover, it has poor generalizations to new scenes and requires retraining or fine-tuning on each scene. In this paper, we develop a new NeRF model for novel view synthesis using only a single image as input. We propose to combine the (coarse) planar rendering and the (fine) volume rendering to achieve higher rendering quality and better generalizations. We also design a depth teacher net that predicts dense pseudo depth maps to supervise the joint rendering mechanism and boost the learning of consistent 3D geometry. We evaluate our method on three challenging datasets. It outperforms state-of-the-art single-view NeRFs by achieving 5$\sim$20\% improvements in PSNR and reducing 20$\sim$50\% of the errors in the depth rendering. It also shows excellent generalization abilities to unseen data without the need to fine-tune on each new scene.

Hybrid Transformer and CNN Attention Network for Stereo Image Super-resolution

Multi-stage strategies are frequently employed in image restoration tasks. While transformer-based methods have exhibited high efficiency in single-image super-resolution tasks, they have not yet shown significant advantages over CNN-based methods in stereo super-resolution tasks. This can be attributed to two key factors: first, current single-image super-resolution transformers are unable to leverage the complementary stereo information during the process; second, the performance of transformers is typically reliant on sufficient data, which is absent in common stereo-image super-resolution algorithms. To address these issues, we propose a Hybrid Transformer and CNN Attention Network (HTCAN), which utilizes a transformer-based network for single-image enhancement and a CNN-based network for stereo information fusion. Furthermore, we employ a multi-patch training strategy and larger window sizes to activate more input pixels for super-resolution. We also revisit other advanced techniques, such as data augmentation, data ensemble, and model ensemble to reduce overfitting and data bias. Finally, our approach achieved a score of 23.90dB and emerged as the winner in Track 1 of the NTIRE 2023 Stereo Image Super-Resolution Challenge.

Joint order assignment and picking station scheduling in KIVA warehouses with multiple stations

We consider the problem of allocating orders to multiple stations and sequencing the interlinked order and rack processing flows in each station in the robot-assisted KIVA warehouse. The various decisions involved in the problem, which are closely associated and must be solved in real time, are often tackled separately for ease of treatment. However, exploiting the synergy between order assignment and picking station scheduling benefits picking efficiency. We develop a comprehensive mathematical model that takes the synergy into consideration to minimize the total number of rack visits. To solve this intractable problem, we develop an efficient algorithm based on simulated annealing and beam search. Computational studies show that our proposed approach outperforms the rule-based greedy policy and the independent picking station scheduling method in terms of solution quality, saving over one-third and one-fifth of rack visits compared with the former and latter, respectively.

Exploring the Curious Case of Code Prompts

Recent work has shown that prompting language models with code-like representations of natural language leads to performance improvements on structured reasoning tasks. However, such tasks comprise only a small subset of all natural language tasks. In our work, we seek to answer whether or not code-prompting is the preferred way of interacting with language models in general. We compare code and text prompts across three popular GPT models (davinci, code-davinci-002, and text-davinci-002) on a broader selection of tasks (e.g., QA, sentiment, summarization) and find that with few exceptions, code prompts do not consistently outperform text prompts. Furthermore, we show that the style of code prompt has a large effect on performance for some but not all tasks and that fine-tuning on text instructions leads to better relative performance of code prompts.

OPDN: Omnidirectional Position-aware Deformable Network for Omnidirectional Image Super-Resolution

360° omnidirectional images have gained research attention due to their immersive and interactive experience, particularly in AR/VR applications. However, they suffer from lower angular resolution due to being captured by fisheye lenses with the same sensor size for capturing planar images. To solve the above issues, we propose a two-stage framework for 360° omnidirectional image superresolution. The first stage employs two branches: model A, which incorporates omnidirectional position-aware deformable blocks (OPDB) and Fourier upsampling, and model B, which adds a spatial frequency fusion module (SFF) to model A. Model A aims to enhance the feature extraction ability of 360° image positional information, while Model B further focuses on the high-frequency information of 360° images. The second stage performs same-resolution enhancement based on the structure of model A with a pixel unshuffle operation. In addition, we collected data from YouTube to improve the fitting ability of the transformer, and created pseudo low-resolution images using a degradation network. Our proposed method achieves superior performance and wins the NTIRE 2023 challenge of 360° omnidirectional image super-resolution.
