Quantum-Nondemolition Probing of Multiphoton Transitions between Dressed States in a Strongly Driven Jaynes--Cummings System

The response of the Jaynes--Cummings (JC) model to strong driving has been examined previously, but the origin of intriguing features near emitter--cavity resonance remains poorly understood because of the large background in conventional transmission spectroscopy. Here we introduce a spectroscopic approach for circuit quantum electrodynamics that combines strong cavity driving with quantum-nondemolition qubit readout. Separating the drive and readout substantially enhances the measurement sensitivity as compared with conventional cavity-transmission spectroscopy. With this technique, we identify the near-resonant features as multiphoton transitions between emitter--photon dressed states of the same parity, and resolve transitions between dressed states of opposite parity. Away from resonance, we also observe selective enhancement and suppression of multiphoton transitions, together with transitions involving the second excited state of the anharmonic qubit. Our approach opens a route to resolving the rich transition structure of the JC ladder and probing strongly driven light--matter interactions.

Universal mechanical exfoliation of large-area 2D crystals

Two-dimensional (2D) materials provide extraordinary opportunities for exploring phenomena arising in atomically thin crystals. Beginning with the first isolation of graphene, mechanical exfoliation has been a key to provide high-quality 2D materials but despite improvements it is still limited in yield, lateral size and contamination. Here we introduce a contamination-free, one-step and universal Au-assisted mechanical exfoliation method and demonstrate its effectiveness by isolating 40 types of single-crystalline monolayers, including elemental 2D crystals, metal-dichalcogenides, magnets and superconductors. Most of them are of millimeter-size and high-quality, as shown by transfer-free measurements of electron microscopy, photo spectroscopies and electrical transport. Large suspended 2D crystals and heterojunctions were also prepared with high-yield. Enhanced adhesion between the crystals and the substrates enables such efficient exfoliation, for which we identify a common rule that underpins a universal route for producing large-area monolayers and thus supports studies of fundamental properties and potential application of 2D materials.

Optimal Size for Maximal Energy Efficiency in Information Processing of Biological Systems Due to Bistability

Energy efficiency is closely related to the evolution of biological systems and is important to their information processing. In this paper, we calculated the excitation probability of a simple model of a bistable biological unit in response to pulsatile inputs, and its spontaneous excitation rate due to noise perturbation. Then we analytically calculated the mutual information, energy cost, and energy efficiency of an array of these bistable units. We found that the optimal number of units could maximize this array's energy efficiency in encoding pulse inputs, which depends on the fixed energy cost. We conclude that demand for energy efficiency in biological systems may strongly influence the size of these systems under the pressure of natural selection.

Cooling of a $Λ$-type three-level atom in a high finesse optical cavity

A theoretical study is carried out for the cavity cooling of a $Λ$-type three level atom in a high-finesse optical cavity with a weakly driven field. Analytical expressions for the friction, diffusion coefficients and the equilibrium temperatures are obtained by using the Heisenberg equations, then they are calculated numerically and shown graphically as a function of controlling parameters. For a suitable choice of these parameters, the dynamics of the cavity field interaction with the $Λ$-type three-level atom introduces a sisyphus cooling mechanism yielding lower temperatures below the Doppler limit and allowing larger cooling rate, avoiding the problems induced by spontaneous emission.
