PAPR-Aware Waveform Design for Energy-Efficient MIMO-OFDM SWIPT

Simultaneous wireless information and power transfer (SWIPT) critically depends on waveform design, which governs both reliable data delivery and efficient energy harvesting. Among waveform characteristics, the peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) plays a pivotal role: low-PAPR signals improve power amplifier (PA) efficiency, while high-PAPR signals exploit rectifier nonlinearities to boost harvested energy. This duality makes PAPR a fundamental design challenge in SWIPT systems. To tackle this issue, we establish a unified analytical framework that characterizes the PAPR-dependent behaviors of both the PA and the rectifier, thereby revealing how waveform statistics determine end-to-end energy transfer efficiency. Building on this insight, we propose a frequency-domain resource allocation strategy for power-splitting SWIPT, where spectral segments are adaptively assigned to balance communication throughput with energy harvesting performance. Here, a key contribution is to extend SWIPT to MIMO-OFDM architectures. Despite concerns over excessive PAPR in large-scale antenna-subcarrier configurations, we demonstrate that appropriate waveform adaptation and resource optimization can transform MIMO-OFDM into an energy-efficient platform for joint data and power transfer. Finally, simulation results confirm significant improvements in PA efficiency, rectifier output, and overall energy transfer, thereby validating the practical benefits of the proposed approach.

Low-Interference N-Continuous OFDM via Optimized Time-Domain Smoothing

A novel basis signal optimization method is proposed for reducing the interference in the N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) system. Compared to conventional NC-OFDM, the proposed scheme is capable of improving the transmission performance while maintaining an identical sidelobe suppression performance imposed by the linear combination of two groups of basis signals. Our performance results demonstrate that with a low-complexity overhead, the proposed scheme is capable of striking a better trade-off among the bit error rate (BER), complexity, and the sidelobe suppression performance compared to its conventional counterparts.

Performance Analysis of Low-Interference N-Continuous OFDM

The low-interference N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) system [25], [26] is investigated in terms of power spectrum density (PSD) and bit error rate (BER), to prove and quantify its advantages over traditional NC-OFDM. The PSD and BER performances of the low-interference scheme are analyzed and compared under the parameters of the highest derivative order (HDO) and the length of the smooth signal. In the context of PSD, different from one discontinuous point per NC-OFDM symbol in [25], the sidelobe suppression performance is evaluated upon considering two discontinuous points due to the finite continuity of the smooth signal and its higher-order derivatives. It was shown that with an increased HDO and an increased length of the smooth signal, a more rapid sidelobe decaying is achieved, for the significant continuity improvement of the OFDM signal and its higher-order derivatives. However, our PSD analysis also shows that if the length of the smooth signal is set inappropriately, the performance may be degraded, even if the HDO is large. Furthermore, it was shown in the error performance analysis that under the assumptions of perfect and imperfect synchronization, the low-interference scheme incurs small BER performance degradation for a short length of the smooth signal or a small HDO as opposed to conventional NC-OFDM. Based on analysis and simulation results, the trade-offs between sidelobe suppression and BER are studied with the above two parameters.

Improved N-continuous OFDM for 5G Wireless Communications

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to obtain significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals, in future 5G wireless communications. However, the precoder of NC-OFDM usually causes severe interference and high complexity. To reduce the interference and complexity, this paper proposes an improved time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM) by shortening the smooth signal, which is linearly combined by rectangularly pulsed OFDM basis signals truncated by a smooth window. Furthermore, we obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis of the TD-NC-OFDM signals by a closed-form expression, calculate its low complexity in OFDM transceiver, and derive a closed-form expression of the received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR). Simulation results show that the proposed low-interference TD-NC-OFDM can achieve similar suppression performance but introduce negligible bit error rate (BER) degradation and much lower computational complexity, compared to conventional NC-OFDM.

A Class of Low-Interference N-Continuous OFDM Schemes

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) was demonstrated to provide significant sidelobe suppression for baseband OFDM signals. However, it will introduce severe interference to the transmit signals. Hence in this letter, we specifically design a class of low-interference NC-OFDM schemes for alleviating the introduced interference. Meanwhile, we also obtain an asymptotic spectrum analysis by a closed-form expression. It is shown that the proposed scheme is capable of reducing the interference to a negligible level, and hence to save the high complexity of signal recovery at the receiver, while maintaining similar sidelobe suppression performance compared to traditional NC-OFDM.

N-continuous OFDM: System Optimization and Performance Analysis

N-continuous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (NC-OFDM) is a promising technique to achieve significant sidelobe suppression of baseband OFDM signals. However, the high complexity limits its application. Based on conventional NC-OFDM, in this paper, a new technique, called time-domain N-continuous OFDM (TD-NC-OFDM), is proposed to transfer the original frequency-domain processing to the time domain, by the linear combination of a novel basis set to smooth the consecutive OFDM symbols and their high-order derivatives. We prove that TD-NC-OFDM is an equivalent to conventional one while consuming much lower complexity. Furthermore, via the time-domain structure, a closed-form spectral expression of NC-OFDM signals is derived and a compact upper bound of sidelobe decaying is derived. This paper also investigates the impact of the TD-NC-OFDM technique on received signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) and provides a closed-form analytical expression. Theoretical analyses and simulation results show that TD-NC-OFDM can prohibitively suppress the sidelobe with much lower complexity.

Improved Peak Cancellation for PAPR Reduction in OFDM Systems

This letter presents an improved peak cancellation (PC) scheme for peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) reduction in orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. The main idea is based on a serial peak cancellation (SPC) mode for alleviating the peak regrowth of the conventional schemes. Based on the SPC mode, two particular algorithms are developed with different tradeoff between PAPR and computational complexity. Simulation shows that the proposed scheme has a better tradeoff among PAPR, complexity and signal distortion than the conventional schemes.
