A Novel Dataset for Keypoint Detection of quadruped Animals from Images

In this paper, we studied the problem of localizing a generic set of keypoints across multiple quadruped or four-legged animal species from images. Due to the lack of large scale animal keypoint dataset with ground truth annotations, we developed a novel dataset, AwA Pose, for keypoint detection of quadruped animals from images. Our dataset contains significantly more keypoints per animal and has much more diverse animals than the existing datasets for animal keypoint detection. We benchmarked the dataset with a state-of-the-art deep learning model for different keypoint detection tasks, including both seen and unseen animal cases. Experimental results showed the effectiveness of the dataset. We believe that this dataset will help the computer vision community in the design and evaluation of improved models for the generalized quadruped animal keypoint detection problem.

Hyperbolic Hypergraphs for Sequential Recommendation

Hypergraphs have been becoming a popular choice to model complex, non-pairwise, and higher-order interactions for recommender system. However, compared with traditional graph-based methods, the constructed hypergraphs are usually much sparser, which leads to a dilemma when balancing the benefits of hypergraphs and the modelling difficulty. Moreover, existing sequential hypergraph recommendation overlooks the temporal modelling among user relationships, which neglects rich social signals from the recommendation data. To tackle the above shortcomings of the existing hypergraph-based sequential recommendations, we propose a novel architecture named Hyperbolic Hypergraph representation learning method for Sequential Recommendation (H2SeqRec) with pre-training phase. Specifically, we design three self-supervised tasks to obtain the pre-training item embeddings to feed or fuse into the following recommendation architecture (with two ways to use the pre-trained embeddings). In the recommendation phase, we learn multi-scale item embeddings via a hierarchical structure to capture multiple time-span information. To alleviate the negative impact of sparse hypergraphs, we utilize a hyperbolic space-based hypergraph convolutional neural network to learn the dynamic item embeddings. Also, we design an item enhancement module to capture dynamic social information at each timestamp to improve effectiveness. Extensive experiments are conducted on two real-world datasets to prove the effectiveness and high performance of the model.

Learning Joint Embedding with Modality Alignments for Cross-Modal Retrieval of Recipes and Food Images

This paper presents a three-tier modality alignment approach to learning text-image joint embedding, coined as JEMA, for cross-modal retrieval of cooking recipes and food images. The first tier improves recipe text embedding by optimizing the LSTM networks with term extraction and ranking enhanced sequence patterns, and optimizes the image embedding by combining the ResNeXt-101 image encoder with the category embedding using wideResNet-50 with word2vec. The second tier modality alignment optimizes the textual-visual joint embedding loss function using a double batch-hard triplet loss with soft-margin optimization. The third modality alignment incorporates two types of cross-modality alignments as the auxiliary loss regularizations to further reduce the alignment errors in the joint learning of the two modality-specific embedding functions. The category-based cross-modal alignment aims to align the image category with the recipe category as a loss regularization to the joint embedding. The cross-modal discriminator-based alignment aims to add the visual-textual embedding distribution alignment to further regularize the joint embedding loss. Extensive experiments with the one-million recipes benchmark dataset Recipe1M demonstrate that the proposed JEMA approach outperforms the state-of-the-art cross-modal embedding methods for both image-to-recipe and recipe-to-image retrievals.

DEXTER: Deep Encoding of External Knowledge for Named Entity Recognition in Virtual Assistants

Named entity recognition (NER) is usually developed and tested on text from well-written sources. However, in intelligent voice assistants, where NER is an important component, input to NER may be noisy because of user or speech recognition error. In applications, entity labels may change frequently, and non-textual properties like topicality or popularity may be needed to choose among alternatives. We describe a NER system intended to address these problems. We test and train this system on a proprietary user-derived dataset. We compare with a baseline text-only NER system; the baseline enhanced with external gazetteers; and the baseline enhanced with the search and indirect labelling techniques we describe below. The final configuration gives around 6% reduction in NER error rate. We also show that this technique improves related tasks, such as semantic parsing, with an improvement of up to 5% in error rate.

Quantum percolation and magnetic nano-dropletstates in electronically phase-separated manganite nanowires

One-dimensional (1D) confinement has been revealed to effectively tune the properties of materials in homogeneous states. The 1D physics can be further enriched by electronic inhomogeneity, which unfortunately remains largely unknown. Here we demonstrate the ultra-high sensitivity to magnetic fluctuations and the tunability of phase stability in the electronic transport properties of self-assembled electronically phase-separated manganite nanowires with extreme aspect ratio. The onset of magnetic nano-droplet state, a precursor to the ferromagnetic metallic state, is unambiguously revealed, which is attributed to the small lateral size of the nanowires that is comparable to the droplet size. Moreover, the quasi-1D anisotropy stabilizes thin insulating domains to form intrinsic tunneling junctions in the low temperature range, which is robust even under magnetic field up to 14 T, and thus essentially modifies the classic 1D percolation picture to stabilize a novel quantum percolation state. A new phase diagram is therefore established for the manganite system under quasi-1D confinement for the first time. Our findings offer new insight to understand and manipulate the colorful properties of the electronically phase-separated systems via dimensionality engineering.

Room-Temperature Anisotropic Plasma Mirror and Polarization-Controlled Optical Switch Based on Type-II Weyl Semimetal WP2

Anisotropy in electronic structures may ignite intriguing anisotropic optical responses, as has been well demonstrated in various systems including superconductors, semiconductors, and even topological Weyl semimetals. Meanwhile, it is well established in metal optics that the metal reflectance declines from one to zero when the photon frequency is above the plasma frequency ωp , behaving as a plasma mirror. However, the exploration of anisotropic plasma mirrors and corresponding applications remains elusive, especially at room temperature. Here, we discover a pronounced anisotropic plasma reflectance edge in the type-II Weyl semimetal WP2, with an anisotropy ratio of ωp up to 1.5. Such anisotropic plasma mirror behavior and its robustness against temperature promise optical device applications over a wide temperature range. For example, the high sensitivity of polarization-resolved plasma reflectance edge renders WP2 an inherent polarization detector. We further achieve a room-temperature WP2-based optical switch, effectively controlled by simply tuning the light polarization. These findings extend the frontiers of metal optics as a discipline and promise the design of multifunctional devices combining both topological and optical features.

Noise Robust Named Entity Understanding for Voice Assistants

Named Entity Recognition (NER) and Entity Linking (EL) play an essential role in voice assistant interaction, but are challenging due to the special difficulties associated with spoken user queries. In this paper, we propose a novel architecture that jointly solves the NER and EL tasks by combining them in a joint reranking module. We show that our proposed framework improves NER accuracy by up to 3.13% and EL accuracy by up to 3.6% in F1 score. The features used also lead to better accuracies in other natural language understanding tasks, such as domain classification and semantic parsing.

Efficient Deep Feature Calibration for Cross-Modal Joint Embedding Learning

This paper introduces a two-phase deep feature calibration framework for efficient learning of semantics enhanced text-image cross-modal joint embedding, which clearly separates the deep feature calibration in data preprocessing from training the joint embedding model. We use the Recipe1M dataset for the technical description and empirical validation. In preprocessing, we perform deep feature calibration by combining deep feature engineering with semantic context features derived from raw text-image input data. We leverage LSTM to identify key terms, NLP methods to produce ranking scores for key terms before generating the key term feature. We leverage wideResNet50 to extract and encode the image category semantics to help semantic alignment of the learned recipe and image embeddings in the joint latent space. In joint embedding learning, we perform deep feature calibration by optimizing the batch-hard triplet loss function with soft-margin and double negative sampling, also utilizing the category-based alignment loss and discriminator-based alignment loss. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our SEJE approach with the deep feature calibration significantly outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

Learning TFIDF Enhanced Joint Embedding for Recipe-Image Cross-Modal Retrieval Service

It is widely acknowledged that learning joint embeddings of recipes with images is challenging due to the diverse composition and deformation of ingredients in cooking procedures. We present a Multi-modal Semantics enhanced Joint Embedding approach (MSJE) for learning a common feature space between the two modalities (text and image), with the ultimate goal of providing high-performance cross-modal retrieval services. Our MSJE approach has three unique features. First, we extract the TFIDF feature from the title, ingredients and cooking instructions of recipes. By determining the significance of word sequences through combining LSTM learned features with their TFIDF features, we encode a recipe into a TFIDF weighted vector for capturing significant key terms and how such key terms are used in the corresponding cooking instructions. Second, we combine the recipe TFIDF feature with the recipe sequence feature extracted through two-stage LSTM networks, which is effective in capturing the unique relationship between a recipe and its associated image(s). Third, we further incorporate TFIDF enhanced category semantics to improve the mapping of image modality and to regulate the similarity loss function during the iterative learning of cross-modal joint embedding. Experiments on the benchmark dataset Recipe1M show the proposed approach outperforms the state-of-the-art approaches.

OLR 2021 Challenge: Datasets, Rules and Baselines

This paper introduces the sixth Oriental Language Recognition (OLR) 2021 Challenge, which intends to improve the performance of language recognition systems and speech recognition systems within multilingual scenarios. The data profile, four tasks, two baselines, and the evaluation principles are introduced in this paper. In addition to the Language Identification (LID) tasks, multilingual Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) tasks are introduced to OLR 2021 Challenge for the first time. The challenge this year focuses on more practical and challenging problems, with four tasks: (1) constrained LID, (2) unconstrained LID, (3) constrained multilingual ASR, (4) unconstrained multilingual ASR. Baselines for LID tasks and multilingual ASR tasks are provided, respectively. The LID baseline system is an extended TDNN x-vector model constructed with Pytorch. A transformer-based end-to-end model is provided as the multilingual ASR baseline system. These recipes will be online published, and available for participants to construct their own LID or ASR systems. The baseline results demonstrate that those tasks are rather challenging and deserve more effort to achieve better performance.

SSC: Semantic Scan Context for Large-Scale Place Recognition

Place recognition gives a SLAM system the ability to correct cumulative errors. Unlike images that contain rich texture features, point clouds are almost pure geometric information which makes place recognition based on point clouds challenging. Existing works usually encode low-level features such as coordinate, normal, reflection intensity, etc., as local or global descriptors to represent scenes. Besides, they often ignore the translation between point clouds when matching descriptors. Different from most existing methods, we explore the use of high-level features, namely semantics, to improve the descriptor's representation ability. Also, when matching descriptors, we try to correct the translation between point clouds to improve accuracy. Concretely, we propose a novel global descriptor, Semantic Scan Context, which explores semantic information to represent scenes more effectively. We also present a two-step global semantic ICP to obtain the 3D pose (x, y, yaw) used to align the point cloud to improve matching performance. Our experiments on the KITTI dataset show that our approach outperforms the state-of-the-art methods with a large margin. Our code is available at: https://github.com/lilin-hitcrt/SSC.

Measurement methods of radial flow in relativistic heavy-ion collisions

Radial flow can be directly extracted from the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse rapidity. We apply the event-plane method and the two-particle correlation method to estimate the anisotropic Fourier coefficient of the azimuthal distribution of mean transverse rapidity. Using the event sample generated by a multiphase transport model with string melting, we show that both methods are effective. For the two-particle correlation method to be reliable, the mean number of particles in an azimuthal bin must be above a certain threshold. Using these two methods, anisotropic radial flow can be estimated in a model-independent way in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Oriental Language Recognition (OLR) 2020: Summary and Analysis

The fifth Oriental Language Recognition (OLR) Challenge focuses on language recognition in a variety of complex environments to promote its development. The OLR 2020 Challenge includes three tasks: (1) cross-channel language identification, (2) dialect identification, and (3) noisy language identification. We choose Cavg as the principle evaluation metric, and the Equal Error Rate (EER) as the secondary metric. There were 58 teams participating in this challenge and one third of the teams submitted valid results. Compared with the best baseline, the Cavg values of Top 1 system for the three tasks were relatively reduced by 82%, 62% and 48%, respectively. This paper describes the three tasks, the database profile, and the final results. We also outline the novel approaches that improve the performance of language recognition systems most significantly, such as the utilization of auxiliary information.

SA-LOAM: Semantic-aided LiDAR SLAM with Loop Closure

LiDAR-based SLAM system is admittedly more accurate and stable than others, while its loop closure detection is still an open issue. With the development of 3D semantic segmentation for point cloud, semantic information can be obtained conveniently and steadily, essential for high-level intelligence and conductive to SLAM. In this paper, we present a novel semantic-aided LiDAR SLAM with loop closure based on LOAM, named SA-LOAM, which leverages semantics in odometry as well as loop closure detection. Specifically, we propose a semantic-assisted ICP, including semantically matching, downsampling and plane constraint, and integrates a semantic graph-based place recognition method in our loop closure detection module. Benefitting from semantics, we can improve the localization accuracy, detect loop closures effectively, and construct a global consistent semantic map even in large-scale scenes. Extensive experiments on KITTI and Ford Campus dataset show that our system significantly improves baseline performance, has generalization ability to unseen data and achieves competitive results compared with state-of-the-art methods.

An Integrated Framework for Two-pass Personalized Voice Trigger

In this paper, we present the XMUSPEECH system for Task 1 of 2020 Personalized Voice Trigger Challenge (PVTC2020). Task 1 is a joint wake-up word detection with speaker verification on close talking data. The whole system consists of a keyword spotting (KWS) sub-system and a speaker verification (SV) sub-system. For the KWS system, we applied a Temporal Depthwise Separable Convolution Residual Network (TDSC-ResNet) to improve the system's performance. For the SV system, we proposed a multi-task learning network, where phonetic branch is trained with the character label of the utterance, and speaker branch is trained with the label of the speaker. Phonetic branch is optimized with connectionist temporal classification (CTC) loss, which is treated as an auxiliary module for speaker branch. Experiments show that our system gets significant improvements compared with baseline system.

Phoneme-aware and Channel-wise Attentive Learning for Text DependentSpeaker Verification

This paper proposes a multi-task learning network with phoneme-aware and channel-wise attentive learning strategies for text-dependent Speaker Verification (SV). In the proposed structure, the frame-level multi-task learning along with the segment-level adversarial learning is adopted for speaker embedding extraction. The phoneme-aware attentive pooling is exploited on frame-level features in the main network for speaker classifier, with the corresponding posterior probability for the phoneme distribution in the auxiliary subnet. Further, the introduction of Squeeze and Excitation (SE-block) performs dynamic channel-wise feature recalibration, which improves the representational ability. The proposed method exploits speaker idiosyncrasies associated with pass-phrases, and is further improved by the phoneme-aware attentive pooling and SE-block from temporal and channel-wise aspects, respectively. The experiments conducted on RSR2015 Part 1 database confirm that the proposed system achieves outstanding results for textdependent SV.

Additive Phoneme-aware Margin Softmax Loss for Language Recognition

This paper proposes an additive phoneme-aware margin softmax (APM-Softmax) loss to train the multi-task learning network with phonetic information for language recognition. In additive margin softmax (AM-Softmax) loss, the margin is set as a constant during the entire training for all training samples, and that is a suboptimal method since the recognition difficulty varies in training samples. In additive angular margin softmax (AAM-Softmax) loss, the additional angular margin is set as a costant as well. In this paper, we propose an APM-Softmax loss for language recognition with phoneitc multi-task learning, in which the additive phoneme-aware margin is automatically tuned for different training samples. More specifically, the margin of language recognition is adjusted according to the results of phoneme recognition. Experiments are reported on Oriental Language Recognition (OLR) datasets, and the proposed method improves AM-Softmax loss and AAM-Softmax loss in different language recognition testing conditions.
