Dynamic PlenOctree for Adaptive Sampling Refinement in Explicit NeRF

The explicit neural radiance field (NeRF) has gained considerable interest for its efficient training and fast inference capabilities, making it a promising direction such as virtual reality and gaming. In particular, PlenOctree (POT)[1], an explicit hierarchical multi-scale octree representation, has emerged as a structural and influential framework. However, POT's fixed structure for direct optimization is sub-optimal as the scene complexity evolves continuously with updates to cached color and density, necessitating refining the sampling distribution to capture signal complexity accordingly. To address this issue, we propose the dynamic PlenOctree DOT, which adaptively refines the sample distribution to adjust to changing scene complexity. Specifically, DOT proposes a concise yet novel hierarchical feature fusion strategy during the iterative rendering process. Firstly, it identifies the regions of interest through training signals to ensure adaptive and efficient refinement. Next, rather than directly filtering out valueless nodes, DOT introduces the sampling and pruning operations for octrees to aggregate features, enabling rapid parameter learning. Compared with POT, our DOT outperforms it by enhancing visual quality, reducing over $55.15$/$68.84\%$ parameters, and providing 1.7/1.9 times FPS for NeRF-synthetic and Tanks $\&$ Temples, respectively. Priors in Deep Image Restoration and Enhancement: A Survey

Image restoration and enhancement is a process of improving the image quality by removing degradations, such as noise, blur, and resolution degradation. Deep learning (DL) has recently been applied to image restoration and enhancement. Due to its ill-posed property, plenty of works have been explored priors to facilitate training deep neural networks (DNNs). However, the importance of priors has not been systematically studied and analyzed by far in the research community. Therefore, this paper serves as the first study that provides a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in priors for deep image restoration and enhancement. Our work covers five primary contents: (1) A theoretical analysis of priors for deep image restoration and enhancement; (2) A hierarchical and structural taxonomy of priors commonly used in the DL-based methods; (3) An insightful discussion on each prior regarding its principle, potential, and applications; (4) A summary of crucial problems by highlighting the potential future directions, especially adopting the large-scale foundation models as prior, to spark more research in the community; (5) An open-source repository that provides a taxonomy of all mentioned works and code links.

A Good Student is Cooperative and Reliable: CNN-Transformer Collaborative Learning for Semantic Segmentation

In this paper, we strive to answer the question "how to collaboratively learn convolutional neural network (CNN)-based and vision transformer (ViT)-based models by selecting and exchanging the reliable knowledge between them for semantic segmentation?" Accordingly, we propose an online knowledge distillation (KD) framework that can simultaneously learn compact yet effective CNN-based and ViT-based models with two key technical breakthroughs to take full advantage of CNNs and ViT while compensating their limitations. Firstly, we propose heterogeneous feature distillation (HFD) to improve students' consistency in low-layer feature space by mimicking heterogeneous features between CNNs and ViT. Secondly, to facilitate the two students to learn reliable knowledge from each other, we propose bidirectional selective distillation (BSD) that can dynamically transfer selective knowledge. This is achieved by 1) region-wise BSD determining the directions of knowledge transferred between the corresponding regions in the feature space and 2) pixel-wise BSD discerning which of the prediction knowledge to be transferred in the logit space. Extensive experiments on three benchmark datasets demonstrate that our proposed framework outperforms the state-of-the-art online distillation methods by a large margin, and shows its efficacy in learning collaboratively between ViT-based and CNN-based models.

Coherent Compensation based ISAC Signal Processing for Long-range Sensing

Integrated sensing and communication (ISAC) will greatly enhance the efficiency of physical resource utilization. The design of ISAC signal based on the orthogonal frequency division multiplex (OFDM) signal is the mainstream. However, when detecting the long-range target, the delay of echo signal exceeds CP duration, which will result in inter-symbol interference (ISI) and inter-carrier interference (ICI), limiting the sensing range. Facing the above problem, we propose to increase useful signal power through coherent compensation and improve the signal to interference plus noise power ratio (SINR) of each OFDM block. Compared with the traditional 2D-FFT algorithm, the improvement of SINR of range-doppler map (RDM) is verified by simulation, which will expand the sensing range.

Superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds with sodium

The discovery of superconductivity in CaC6 with a critical temperature (Tc) of 11.5 K reignites much interest in exploring high-temperature superconductivity in graphite intercalation compounds (GICs). Here we identify a GIC NaC4, discovered by ab initio evolutionary structure search, as a superconductor with a computed Tc of 41.2 K at 5 GPa. This value is eight times higher than that of the synthesized GIC NaC2 and possesses the highest Tc among available GICs. The remarkable superconductivity of GIC NaC4 mainly arises from the coupling of π electrons in graphene with the low-frequency vibrations involving both Na and C atoms. These findings suggest that Na-GICs may hold great promise as high-Tc superconductors.

InferTurbo: A Scalable System for Boosting Full-graph Inference of Graph Neural Network over Huge Graphs

GNN inference is a non-trivial task, especially in industrial scenarios with giant graphs, given three main challenges, i.e., scalability tailored for full-graph inference on huge graphs, inconsistency caused by stochastic acceleration strategies (e.g., sampling), and the serious redundant computation issue. To address the above challenges, we propose a scalable system named InferTurbo to boost the GNN inference tasks in industrial scenarios. Inspired by the philosophy of ``think-like-a-vertex", a GAS-like (Gather-Apply-Scatter) schema is proposed to describe the computation paradigm and data flow of GNN inference. The computation of GNNs is expressed in an iteration manner, in which a vertex would gather messages via in-edges and update its state information by forwarding an associated layer of GNNs with those messages and then send the updated information to other vertexes via out-edges. Following the schema, the proposed InferTurbo can be built with alternative backends (e.g., batch processing system or graph computing system). Moreover, InferTurbo introduces several strategies like shadow-nodes and partial-gather to handle nodes with large degrees for better load balancing. With InferTurbo, GNN inference can be hierarchically conducted over the full graph without sampling and redundant computation. Experimental results demonstrate that our system is robust and efficient for inference tasks over graphs containing some hub nodes with many adjacent edges. Meanwhile, the system gains a remarkable performance compared with the traditional inference pipeline, and it can finish a GNN inference task over a graph with tens of billions of nodes and hundreds of billions of edges within 2 hours.

When SAM Meets Sonar Images

Segment Anything Model (SAM) has revolutionized the way of segmentation. However, SAM's performance may decline when applied to tasks involving domains that differ from natural images. Nonetheless, by employing fine-tuning techniques, SAM exhibits promising capabilities in specific domains, such as medicine and planetary science. Notably, there is a lack of research on the application of SAM to sonar imaging. In this paper, we aim to address this gap by conducting a comprehensive investigation of SAM's performance on sonar images. Specifically, we evaluate SAM using various settings on sonar images. Additionally, we fine-tune SAM using effective methods both with prompts and for semantic segmentation, thereby expanding its applicability to tasks requiring automated segmentation. Experimental results demonstrate a significant improvement in the performance of the fine-tuned SAM.

Antiferromagnetic $α$-MnTe: Molten-Salt-Assisted Chemical Vapor Deposition Growth and Magneto-Transport Properties

Antiferromagnetic (AF) materials are attracting increasing interest of research in magnetic physics and spintronics. Here, we report controllable synthesis of room-temperature AF $α$-MnTe nanocrystals (Néel temperature ~ 307 K) via molten-salt-assisted chemical vapor deposition method. The growth kinetics are investigated regarding the dependence of flake dimension and macroscopic shape on growth time and temperature. The high crystalline quality and atomic structure are confirmed by various crystallographic characterization means. Cryogenic magneto-transport measurements reveal anisotropic magnetoresistance (MR) response and a complicated dependence of MR on temperature, owing to the subtle competition among multiple scattering mechanisms of thermally excited magnetic disorders (magnon drag), magnetic transition and thermally populated lattice phonons. Overall positive MR behavior with twice transitions in magnitude is observed when out-of-plane external magnetic field ($B$) is applied, while a transition from negative to positive MR response is recorded when in-plane $B$ is applied. The rich magnetic transport properties render $α$-MnTe a promising material for exploiting functional components in magnetic devices.

Dynamics of coupled implicit and explicit opinions

This paper proposes a dual opinions co-evolution model based on the dual attitudes theory in social psychology, where every individual has dual opinions of an object: implicit and explicit opinions. The implicit opinions are individuals' inner evaluations affected by the experience, while the explicit opinions are external expressions of the evaluations and are influenced by public opinion. We theoretically analyze the dynamics of coupled dual opinions in an adversarial discussion scenario, in which two opposing groups participate in the discussion. We rigorously give a method to grade the degree of individual bias. When individuals have a slight bias, dual opinions reach a consensus, showing the phenomenon of acceptance. When individuals are moderately or even extremely biased, they will exhibit the phenomenon of outward compliance, that is, their publicly explicit opinions conform to public opinion, while implicit opinions will reach a persistent disagreement and even polarization. Our investigation indicates that dual opinions may not be monotone initially but eventually converge monotonically. Besides, we analyze the influence of parameters on the co-evolutionary process and results. Numerical simulations of the dual opinions formation process produce inward and outward conformity phenomena, namely acceptance and compliance.

Adaptive Multi-Armed Bandit Learning for Task Offloading in Edge Computing

The widespread adoption of edge computing has emerged as a prominent trend for alleviating task processing delays and reducing energy consumption. However, the dynamic nature of network conditions and the varying computation capacities of edge servers (ESs) can introduce disparities between computation loads and available computing resources in edge computing networks, potentially leading to inadequate service quality. To address this challenge, this paper investigates a practical scenario characterized by dynamic task offloading. Initially, we examine traditional Multi-armed Bandit (MAB) algorithms, namely the $\varepsilon$-greedy algorithm and the UCB1-based algorithm. However, both algorithms exhibit certain weaknesses in effectively addressing the tidal data traffic patterns. Consequently, based on MAB, we propose an adaptive task offloading algorithm (ATOA) that overcomes these limitations. By conducting extensive simulations, we demonstrate the superiority of our ATOA solution in reducing task processing latency compared to conventional MAB methods. This substantiates the effectiveness of our approach in enhancing the performance of edge computing networks and improving overall service quality.

Spectrum Sharing between High Altitude Platform Network and Terrestrial Network: Modeling and Performance Analysis

Achieving seamless global coverage is one of the ultimate goals of space-air-ground integrated network, as a part of which High Altitude Platform (HAP) network can provide wide-area coverage. However, deploying a large number of HAPs will lead to severe congestion of existing frequency bands. Spectrum sharing improves spectrum utilization. The coverage performance improvement and interference caused by spectrum sharing need to be investigated. To this end, this paper analyzes the performance of spectrum sharing between HAP network and terrestrial network. We firstly generalize the Poisson Point Process (PPP) to curves, surfaces and manifolds to model the distribution of terrestrial Base Stations (BSs) and HAPs. Then, the closed-form expressions for coverage probability of HAP network and terrestrial network are derived based on differential geometry and stochastic geometry. We verify the accuracy of closed-form expressions by Monte Carlo simulation. The results show that HAP network has less interference to terrestrial network. Low height and suitable deployment density can improve the coverage probability and transmission capacity of HAP network.

Patch-Mix Transformer for Unsupervised Domain Adaptation: A Game Perspective

Endeavors have been recently made to leverage the vision transformer (ViT) for the challenging unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) task. They typically adopt the cross-attention in ViT for direct domain alignment. However, as the performance of cross-attention highly relies on the quality of pseudo labels for targeted samples, it becomes less effective when the domain gap becomes large. We solve this problem from a game theory's perspective with the proposed model dubbed as PMTrans, which bridges source and target domains with an intermediate domain. Specifically, we propose a novel ViT-based module called PatchMix that effectively builds up the intermediate domain, i.e., probability distribution, by learning to sample patches from both domains based on the game-theoretical models. This way, it learns to mix the patches from the source and target domains to maximize the cross entropy (CE), while exploiting two semi-supervised mixup losses in the feature and label spaces to minimize it. As such, we interpret the process of UDA as a min-max CE game with three players, including the feature extractor, classifier, and PatchMix, to find the Nash Equilibria. Moreover, we leverage attention maps from ViT to re-weight the label of each patch by its importance, making it possible to obtain more domain-discriminative feature representations. We conduct extensive experiments on four benchmark datasets, and the results show that PMTrans significantly surpasses the ViT-based and CNN-based SoTA methods by +3.6% on Office-Home, +1.4% on Office-31, and +17.7% on DomainNet, respectively.

FMapping: Factorized Efficient Neural Field Mapping for Real-Time Dense RGB SLAM

In this paper, we introduce FMapping, an efficient neural field mapping framework that facilitates the continuous estimation of a colorized point cloud map in real-time dense RGB SLAM. To achieve this challenging goal without depth, a hurdle is how to improve efficiency and reduce the mapping uncertainty of the RGB SLAM system. To this end, we first build up a theoretical analysis by decomposing the SLAM system into tracking and mapping parts, and the mapping uncertainty is explicitly defined within the frame of neural representations. Based on the analysis, we then propose an effective factorization scheme for scene representation and introduce a sliding window strategy to reduce the uncertainty for scene reconstruction. Specifically, we leverage the factorized neural field to decompose uncertainty into a lower-dimensional space, which enhances robustness to noise and improves training efficiency. We then propose the sliding window sampler to reduce uncertainty by incorporating coherent geometric cues from observed frames during map initialization to enhance convergence. Our factorized neural mapping approach enjoys some advantages, such as low memory consumption, more efficient computation, and fast convergence during map initialization. Experiments on two benchmark datasets show that our method can update the map of high-fidelity colorized point clouds around 2 seconds in real time while requiring no customized CUDA kernels. Additionally, it utilizes x20 fewer parameters than the most concise neural implicit mapping of prior methods for SLAM, e.g., iMAP [ 31] and around x1000 fewer parameters than the state-of-the-art approach, e.g., NICE-SLAM [ 42]. Towards Language-guided Interactive 3D Generation: LLMs as Layout Interpreter with Generative Feedback

Generating and editing a 3D scene guided by natural language poses a challenge, primarily due to the complexity of specifying the positional relations and volumetric changes within the 3D space. Recent advancements in Large Language Models (LLMs) have demonstrated impressive reasoning, conversational, and zero-shot generation abilities across various domains. Surprisingly, these models also show great potential in realizing and interpreting the 3D space. In light of this, we propose a novel language-guided interactive 3D generation system, dubbed LI3D, that integrates LLMs as a 3D layout interpreter into the off-the-shelf layout-to-3D generative models, allowing users to flexibly and interactively generate visual content. Specifically, we design a versatile layout structure base on the bounding boxes and semantics to prompt the LLMs to model the spatial generation and reasoning from language. Our system also incorporates LLaVA, a large language and vision assistant, to provide generative feedback from the visual aspect for improving the visual quality of generated content. We validate the effectiveness of LI3D, primarily in 3D generation and editing through multi-round interactions, which can be flexibly extended to 2D generation and editing. Various experiments demonstrate the potential benefits of incorporating LLMs in generative AI for applications, e.g., metaverse. Moreover, we benchmark the layout reasoning performance of LLMs with neural visual artist tasks, revealing their emergent ability in the spatial layout domain.

HRDFuse: Monocular 360°Depth Estimation by Collaboratively Learning Holistic-with-Regional Depth Distributions

Depth estimation from a monocular 360° image is a burgeoning problem owing to its holistic sensing of a scene. Recently, some methods, \eg, OmniFusion, have applied the tangent projection (TP) to represent a 360°image and predicted depth values via patch-wise regressions, which are merged to get a depth map with equirectangular projection (ERP) format. However, these methods suffer from 1) non-trivial process of merging plenty of patches; 2) capturing less holistic-with-regional contextual information by directly regressing the depth value of each pixel. In this paper, we propose a novel framework, \textbf{HRDFuse}, that subtly combines the potential of convolutional neural networks (CNNs) and transformers by collaboratively learning the \textit{holistic} contextual information from the ERP and the \textit{regional} structural information from the TP. Firstly, we propose a spatial feature alignment (\textbf{SFA}) module that learns feature similarities between the TP and ERP to aggregate the TP features into a complete ERP feature map in a pixel-wise manner. Secondly, we propose a collaborative depth distribution classification (\textbf{CDDC}) module that learns the \textbf{holistic-with-regional} histograms capturing the ERP and TP depth distributions. As such, the final depth values can be predicted as a linear combination of histogram bin centers. Lastly, we adaptively combine the depth predictions from ERP and TP to obtain the final depth map. Extensive experiments show that our method predicts\textbf{ more smooth and accurate depth} results while achieving \textbf{favorably better} results than the SOTA methods.

SPP-CNN: An Efficient Framework for Network Robustness Prediction

This paper addresses the robustness of a network to sustain its connectivity and controllability against malicious attacks. This kind of network robustness is typically measured by the time-consuming attack simulation, which returns a sequence of values that record the remaining connectivity and controllability after a sequence of node- or edge-removal attacks. For improvement, this paper develops an efficient framework for network robustness prediction, the spatial pyramid pooling convolutional neural network (SPP-CNN). The new framework installs a spatial pyramid pooling layer between the convolutional and fully-connected layers, overcoming the common mismatch issue in the CNN-based prediction approaches and extending its generalizability. Extensive experiments are carried out by comparing SPP-CNN with three state-of-the-art robustness predictors, namely a CNN-based and two graph neural networks-based frameworks. Synthetic and real-world networks, both directed and undirected, are investigated. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed SPP-CNN achieves better prediction performances and better generalizability to unknown datasets, with significantly lower time-consumption, than its counterparts.

Deep Reinforcement Learning Based Resource Allocation for Cloud Native Wireless Network

Cloud native technology has revolutionized 5G beyond and 6G communication networks, offering unprecedented levels of operational automation, flexibility, and adaptability. However, the vast array of cloud native services and applications presents a new challenge in resource allocation for dynamic cloud computing environments. To tackle this challenge, we investigate a cloud native wireless architecture that employs container-based virtualization to enable flexible service deployment. We then study two representative use cases: network slicing and Multi-Access Edge Computing. To optimize resource allocation in these scenarios, we leverage deep reinforcement learning techniques and introduce two model-free algorithms capable of monitoring the network state and dynamically training allocation policies. We validate the effectiveness of our algorithms in a testbed developed using Free5gc. Our findings demonstrate significant improvements in network efficiency, underscoring the potential of our proposed techniques in unlocking the full potential of cloud native wireless networks.

A nonlinear semigroup approach to Hamilton-Jacobi equations--revisited

We consider the Hamilton-Jacobi equation \[{H}(x,Du)+λ(x)u=c,\quad x\in M, \] where $M$ is a connected, closed and smooth Riemannian manifold. The functions ${H}(x,p)$ and $λ(x)$ are continuous. ${H}(x,p)$ is convex, coercive with respect to $p$, and $λ(x)$ changes the signs. The first breakthrough to this model was achieved by Jin-Yan-Zhao \cite{JYZ} under the Tonelli conditions. In this paper, we consider more detailed structure of the viscosity solution set and large time behavior of the viscosity solution on the Cauchy problem.
