Approximate Virtual Quantum Recovery

The recovery of quantum information after subsystem loss is a central challenge in quantum information processing. However, some states remain beyond the reach of any recovery strategies. Here we identify the algebraic origin of virtual irrecoverability, the \emph{ghost information}---correlations encoded in the global state that leave no trace on any accessible subsystem. We introduce a scalar measure quantifying its magnitude and prove a universal error floor below which no virtual recovery map can operate, irrespective of resource investment. In such cases only \emph{approximate} virtual recovery is available. We study the sampling cost when approaching the minimal attainable recovery error, and find it bounded when the underlying linear map exhibits a spectrum gap, and divergent in the gapless regime, respectively. Together with the universal error floor, this dichotomy partitions all multipartite quantum states into four classes. Moreover, we show that conditional mutual information, the standard entropic diagnostic, does not constrain virtual recoverability. As an implication, we show that the error floor imposes a detection threshold for loss-tolerant quantum metrology.

$1/N^2$ Precision Interferometry with Collectively Enhanced Atomic Mirror

Quantum metrology exploits quantum resources to enhance measurement precision beyond the classical limit. Conventional protocols normally rely on the preparation of delicate quantum states to acquire these resources, posing a major challenge for scaling and robustness. Here we introduce a paradigm that circumvents this requirement with a collectively enhanced quantum mirror (CEAM), i.e., a mesoscopic array of $N$ atoms coupled to a semi-infinite waveguide. When injecting single photons into the waveguide and estimating the CEAM-boundary distance from the reflection phase, a $1/N^2$ precision scaling can be obtained, which surpasses the Heisenberg limit. In this protocol, the quantum resource stems from the cooperative optical response, requiring no entangled state preparation. Our scheme is robust against positional and coupling disorder, offering a practical route to ultra-sensitive quantum metrology in integrated photonic systems.

Manipulating Fano coupling in an opto-thermoelectric field

Fano resonances in photonics arise from the coupling and interference between two resonant modes in structures with broken symmetry. They feature an uneven and narrow and tunable lineshape, and are ideally suited for optical spectroscopy. Many Fano resonance structures have been suggested in nanophotonics over the last ten years, but reconfigurability and tailored design remain challenging. Herein, we propose an all-optical pick-and-place approach aimed at assemble Fano metamolecules of various geometries and compositions in a reconfigurable manner. We study their coupling behavior by in-situ dark-field scattering spectroscopy. Driven by a light-directed opto-thermoelectric field, silicon nanoparticles with high quality-factor Mie resonances (discrete states) and low-loss BaTiO3 nanoparticles (continuum states) are assembled into all-dielectric heterodimers, where distinct Fano resonances are observed. The Fano parameter can be adjusted by changing the resonant frequency of the discrete states or the light polarization. We also show tunable coupling strength and multiple Fano resonances by altering the number of continuum states and discrete states in dielectric heterooligomers. Our work offers a general design rule for Fano resonance and an all-optical platform for controlling Fano coupling on demand.

Suppression of Local Decay in non-Markovian Waveguide QED

Atoms coupled to the same environment interfere with each other to yield super- or sub-radiance. Specifically, atoms in subradiant states are promising candidates for long-lifetime qubits and quantum memory because of the immunity to the common environment. However, subradiant states can still be influenced by local environments, which are incoherent for different atoms and cannot be canceled out through interference. Here we propose to break this limit by preparing a waveguide QED system in the non-Markovian regime, where the ultra-small decay rate arises because of the retarded interaction. We further show that similar effect occurs spontaneously by self-interference and can be stressed by cooperative coupling.

All-optical reconfigurable chiral meta-molecules

Chirality is a ubiquitous phenomenon in the natural world. Many biomolecules without inversion symmetry such as amino acids and sugars are chiral molecules. Measuring and controlling molecular chirality at a high precision down to the atomic scale are highly desired in physics, chemistry, biology, and medicine, however, have remained challenging. Herein, we achieve all-optical reconfigurable chiral meta-molecules experimentally using metallic and dielectric colloidal particles as artificial atoms or building blocks to serve at least two purposes. One is that the on-demand meta-molecules with strongly enhanced optical chirality are well-suited as substrates for surface-enhanced chiroptical spectroscopy of chiral molecules and as active components in optofluidic and nanophotonic devices. The other is that the bottom-up-assembled colloidal meta-molecules provide microscopic models to better understand the origin of chirality in the actual atomic and molecular systems.
