SN 2025fhm: A central-engine powered Ic-BL supernova associated with X-ray transient EP250304a

We present X-ray, optical, and radio follow-up observations of EP250304a, an extragalactic fast X-ray transient (EFXT) discovered by the Einstein Probe. Its X-ray light curve exhibits two broad pulses with comparable peak fluxes within the first $\sim$1~ks, a feature rarely seen among low-luminosity gamma-ray bursts or EFXTs. Optical follow-up observations were carried out using the Korea Microlensing Telescope Network, the Thai Robotic Telescope, the Las Cumbres Observatory 1~m global network, the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph on Gemini south telescope, and the Global Supernova Network. The fast-cooling phase (within 3 days) of optical data can be well fitted by a shocked cocoon model. However, during the supernova phase (SN 2025fhm, from 3 to 88 days), the late-time light curve cannot be explained solely by radioactive $^{56}$Ni decay, as demonstrated by a grid of simulations using the one-dimensional Lagrangian radiation hydrodynamics code SNEC, which reveals a significant energy excess at late epochs. To account for this excess, a central engine like a rapidly spinning, highly magnetized neutron star is needed to provide additional energy injection. This model yields a best-fit spin period of $\sim$12.60~ms and magnetic field strength of $\sim 3.52\times10^{15} \rm G$, and it successfully explains both the late-time bolometric light curve and the early X-ray pulse structures. Our results indicate that EP250304a/SN 2025fhm is likely powered by a central magnetar rather than by radioactive decay alone, offering new insights into the energy budget and physical origin of EFXTs and their associated supernovae.

Coexistence of Antiferromagnetic Spin Fluctuations and Superconductivity in La2SmNi2O7 Thin Films

The interplay between magnetic fluctuations and superconductivity is fundamental for understanding unconventional high-temperature superconductors. In the recently discovered Ruddlesden-Popper phase nickelates-which achieve superconducting transition temperatures up to ~100 K-this connection has been theoretically predicted but experimentally unverified. Using compressively strained La2SmNi2O7 thin films, we report direct evidence for this interplay. We observe a characteristic 'Mexican hat'-shaped magnetoresistance, a signature of superconductivity coexisting with emergent antiferromagnetic (AFM) fluctuations. This distinctive feature arises from a competition between the magnetic field's suppression of AFM fluctuation-driven scattering and its suppression of superconducting fluctuations. We quantify these AFM fluctuations by a crossover field, B*, whose magnitude decreases with increasing temperature and vanishes near the superconducting onset-behavior contrasting sharply with that in high-Tc cuprates. Our results establish not merely coexistence, but also a direct and novel correlation between AFM instability and superconductivity in nickelates, offering crucial insight into their pairing mechanism.

VVV-WIT-13: an eruptive young star with cool molecular features

Here we investigate an infrared eruptive source, identified from the decade-long VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV). We named this target after a group of variable sources discovered by VVV, as VVV-WIT-13, with WIT standing for "What Is This?", due to its unique photometric variation behaviour and the mysterious origin of the outburst. This target exhibited an outburst with a 5.7 mag amplitude in the Ks-band, remained on its brightness plateau for 3.5 years, and then rapidly faded to its pre-eruptive brightness afterwards. We aim to reveal the variable nature and outburst origin of VVV-WIT-13 by presenting our follow-up photometric and spectroscopic observations along with theoretical models. We gathered photometric time series in both near- and mid-infrared wavelengths. We obtained near-infrared spectra during the outburst and decaying stages on XSHOOTER/VLT and FIRE/Magellan, and then fitted the detected molecular absorption features using models from ExoMol. We applied 2D numerical simulations to re-create the observables of the eruptive phenomenon. We observe deep AlO absorption bands in the infrared spectra of VVV-WIT-13, during the outburst stage, along with other more common absorption bands (e.g. CO). Our best-fit model suggests a 600 K temperature of the AlO absorption band. In the decaying stage, the AlO bands disappeared, whilst broad blue-shifted H2 lines arose, a common indicator of stellar wind and outflow. The observational evidence suggests that the CO and TiO features originate from an outflow or a wind environment. We find that VVV-WIT-13 is an eruptive young star with instability occurring in the accretion disk. One favoured theoretical explanation of this event is a disrupted gas clump at a distance of 3 au from the source. If confirmed, this would be the first such event observed in real time.

Newly Formed Dust within the Circumstellar Environment of SNIa-CSM 2018evt

Dust associated with various stellar sources in galaxies at all cosmic epochs remains a controversial topic, particularly whether supernovae (SNe) play an important role in dust production. We report evidence of dust formation in the cold, dense shell behind the ejecta-circumstellar medium (CSM) interaction in the Type Ia-CSM SN 2018evt three years after the explosion, characterized by a rise in the mid-infrared (MIR) emission accompanied by an accelerated decline in the optical radiation of the SN. Such a dust-formation picture is also corroborated by the concurrent evolution of the profiles of the Ha emission line. Our model suggests enhanced CSM dust concentration at increasing distances from the SN as compared to what can be expected from the density profile of the mass loss from a steady stellar wind. By the time of the last MIR observations at day +1041, a total amount of 1.2+-0.2x10^{-2} Msun of new dust has been formed by SN 2018evt, making SN 2018evt one of the most prolific dust factories among SNe with evidence of dust formation. The unprecedented witness of the intense production procedure of dust may shed light on the perceptions of dust formation in cosmic history.

Optical and Near-Infrared Observations of the Nearby Type Ia Supernova 2017cbv

Supernova (SN) 2017cbv in NGC 5643 is one of a handful of type Ia supernovae (SNe~Ia) reported to have excess blue emission at early times. This paper presents extensive $BVRIYJHK_s$-band light curves of SN 2017cbv, covering the phase from $-16$ to $+125$ days relative to $B$-band maximum light. SN 2017cbv reached a $B$-band maximum of 11.710$\pm$0.006~mag, with a post-maximum magnitude decline $\Delta m_{15}(B)$=0.990$\pm$0.013 mag. The supernova suffered no host reddening based on Phillips intrinsic color, Lira-Phillips relation, and the CMAGIC diagram. By employing the CMAGIC distance modulus $\mu=30.58\pm0.05$~mag and assuming $H_0$=72~$\rm km \ s^{-1} \ Mpc^{-1}$, we found that 0.73~\msun $^{56}$Ni was synthesized during the explosion of SN 2017cbv, which is consistent with estimates using reddening-free and distance-free methods via the phases of the secondary maximum of the NIR-band light curves. We also present 14 near-infrared spectra from $-18$ to $+49$~days relative to the $B$-band maximum light, providing constraints on the amount of swept-up hydrogen from the companion star in the context of the single degenerate progenitor scenario. No $Pa{\beta}$ emission feature was detected from our post-maximum NIR spectra, placing a hydrogen mass upper limit of 0.1 $M_{\odot}$. The overall optical/NIR photometric and NIR spectral evolution of SN 2017cbv is similar to that of a normal SN~Ia, even though its early evolution is marked by a flux excess no seen in most other well-observed normal SNe~Ia. We also compare the exquisite light curves of SN 2017cbv with some $M_{ch}$ DDT models and sub-$M_{ch}$ double detonation models.

A one-step optimal energy decay formula for indirectly nonlinearly damped hyperbolic systems coupled by velocities

In this paper, we consider the energy decay of a damped hyperbolic system of wave-wave type which is coupled through the velocities. We are interested in the asymptotic properties of the solutions of this system in the case of indirect nonlinear damping, i.e. when only one equation is directly damped by a nonlinear damping. We prove that the total energy of the whole system decays as fast as the damped single equation. Moreover, we give a one-step general explicit decay formula for arbitrary nonlinearity. Our results shows that the damping properties are fully transferred from the damped equation to the undamped one by the coupling in velocities, different from the case of couplings through displacements as shown in \cite{AB01, ACK01, AB02, AL12} for the linear damping case, and in \cite{AB07} for the nonlinear damping case. The proofs of our results are based on multiplier techniques, weighted nonlinear integral inequalities and the optimal-weight convexity method of \cite{AB05, AB10}.
