Isometries of asymptotically conical shrinking Ricci solitons

We show that if a shrinking soliton is asymptotic to a cone along an end then the isometry group of the cross-section of the cone embeds in the isometry group of the end of the shrinker. We also provide sufficient conditions for the isometries of the end to extend to the entire shrinker.

Engineering Photon Delocalization in a Rabi Dimer with a Dissipative Bath

A Rabi dimer is used to model a recently reported circuit quantum electrodynamics system composed of two coupled transmission-line resonators with each coupled to one qubit. In this study, a phonon bath is adopted to mimic the multimode micromechanical resonators and is coupled to the qubits in the Rabi dimer. The dynamical behavior of the composite system is studied by the Dirac-Frenkel time-dependent variational principle combined with the multiple Davydov D$_{2}$ ansätze. Initially all the photons are pumped into the left resonator, and the two qubits are in the down state coupled with the phonon vacuum. In the strong qubit-photon coupling regime, the photon dynamics can be engineered by tuning the qubit-bath coupling strength $α$ and photon delocalization is achieved by increasing $α$. In the absence of dissipation, photons are localized in the initial resonator. Nevertheless, with moderate qubit-bath coupling, photons are delocalized with quasiequilibration of the photon population in two resonators at long times. In this case, high frequency bath modes are activated by interacting with depolarized qubits. For strong dissipation, photon delocalization is achieved via frequent photon-hopping within two resonators and the qubits are suppressed in their initial down state.

Learning Segmentation Masks with the Independence Prior

An instance with a bad mask might make a composite image that uses it look fake. This encourages us to learn segmentation by generating realistic composite images. To achieve this, we propose a novel framework that exploits a new proposed prior called the independence prior based on Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs). The generator produces an image with multiple category-specific instance providers, a layout module and a composition module. Firstly, each provider independently outputs a category-specific instance image with a soft mask. Then the provided instances' poses are corrected by the layout module. Lastly, the composition module combines these instances into a final image. Training with adversarial loss and penalty for mask area, each provider learns a mask that is as small as possible but enough to cover a complete category-specific instance. Weakly supervised semantic segmentation methods widely use grouping cues modeling the association between image parts, which are either artificially designed or learned with costly segmentation labels or only modeled on local pairs. Unlike them, our method automatically models the dependence between any parts and learns instance segmentation. We apply our framework in two cases: (1) Foreground segmentation on category-specific images with box-level annotation. (2) Unsupervised learning of instance appearances and masks with only one image of homogeneous object cluster (HOC). We get appealing results in both tasks, which shows the independence prior is useful for instance segmentation and it is possible to unsupervisedly learn instance masks with only one image.

Hull Form Optimization with Principal Component Analysis and Deep Neural Network

Designing and modifying complex hull forms for optimal vessel performances have been a major challenge for naval architects. In the present study, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) is introduced to compress the geometric representation of a group of existing vessels, and the resulting principal scores are manipulated to generate a large number of derived hull forms, which are evaluated computationally for their calm-water performances. The results are subsequently used to train a Deep Neural Network (DNN) to accurately establish the relation between different hull forms and their associated performances. Then, based on the fast, parallel DNN-based hull-form evaluation, the large-scale search for optimal hull forms is performed.

Robust Neural Abstractive Summarization Systems and Evaluation against Adversarial Information

Sequence-to-sequence (seq2seq) neural models have been actively investigated for abstractive summarization. Nevertheless, existing neural abstractive systems frequently generate factually incorrect summaries and are vulnerable to adversarial information, suggesting a crucial lack of semantic understanding. In this paper, we propose a novel semantic-aware neural abstractive summarization model that learns to generate high quality summaries through semantic interpretation over salient content. A novel evaluation scheme with adversarial samples is introduced to measure how well a model identifies off-topic information, where our model yields significantly better performance than the popular pointer-generator summarizer. Human evaluation also confirms that our system summaries are uniformly more informative and faithful as well as less redundant than the seq2seq model.

Supervised Reinforcement Learning with Recurrent Neural Network for Dynamic Treatment Recommendation

Dynamic treatment recommendation systems based on large-scale electronic health records (EHRs) become a key to successfully improve practical clinical outcomes. Prior relevant studies recommend treatments either use supervised learning (e.g. matching the indicator signal which denotes doctor prescriptions), or reinforcement learning (e.g. maximizing evaluation signal which indicates cumulative reward from survival rates). However, none of these studies have considered to combine the benefits of supervised learning and reinforcement learning. In this paper, we propose Supervised Reinforcement Learning with Recurrent Neural Network (SRL-RNN), which fuses them into a synergistic learning framework. Specifically, SRL-RNN applies an off-policy actor-critic framework to handle complex relations among multiple medications, diseases and individual characteristics. The "actor" in the framework is adjusted by both the indicator signal and evaluation signal to ensure effective prescription and low mortality. RNN is further utilized to solve the Partially-Observed Markov Decision Process (POMDP) problem due to the lack of fully observed states in real world applications. Experiments on the publicly real-world dataset, i.e., MIMIC-3, illustrate that our model can reduce the estimated mortality, while providing promising accuracy in matching doctors' prescriptions.

High Efficiency Terahertz Generation in a Multi-Stage System

We describe a robust system for laser-driven narrowband terahertz generation with high conversion efficiency in periodically poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN). In the multi-stage terahertz generation system, the pump pulse is recycled after each PPLN stage for further terahertz generation. By out-coupling the terahertz radiation generated in each stage, extra absorption is circumvented and effective interaction length is increased. The separation of the terahertz and optical pulses at each stage is accomplished by an appropriately designed out-coupler. To evaluate the proposed architecture, the governing 2-D coupled wave equations in a cylindrically symmetric geometry are numerically solved using the finite difference method. Compared to the 1-D calculation which cannot capture the self-focusing and diffraction effects, our 2-D numerical method captures the effects of difference frequency generation, self-phase modulation, self-focusing, beam diffraction, dispersion, and terahertz absorption. We found that the terahertz generation efficiency can be greatly enhanced by compensating the dispersion of the pump pulse after each stage. With a two-stage system, we predict the generation of a $17.6$ mJ terahertz pulse with total conversion efficiency $η_{\text{total}}=1.6\%$ at $0.3$ THz using a 1.1 J pump laser with a two-line spectrum centered at 1 $μ$m. The generation efficiency of each stage is above $0.8\%$ with the out-coupling efficiencies above $93.0\%$.

Symmetric Bilinear Regression for Signal Subgraph Estimation

There is increasing interest in learning a set of small outcome-relevant subgraphs in network-predictor regression. The extracted signal subgraphs can greatly improve the interpretation of the association between the network predictor and the response. In brain connectomics, the brain network for an individual corresponds to a set of interconnections among brain regions and there is a strong interest in linking the brain connectome to human cognitive traits. Modern neuroimaging technology allows a very fine segmentation of the brain, producing very large structural brain networks. Therefore, accurate and efficient methods for identifying a set of small predictive subgraphs become crucial, leading to discovery of key interconnected brain regions related to the trait and important insights on the mechanism of variation in human cognitive traits. We propose a symmetric bilinear model with $L_1$ penalty to search for small clique subgraphs that contain useful information about the response. A coordinate descent algorithm is developed to estimate the model where we derive analytical solutions for a sequence of conditional convex optimizations. Application of this method on human connectome and language comprehension data shows interesting discovery of relevant interconnections among several small sets of brain regions and better predictive performance than competitors.

The space of asymptotically conical self-expanders of mean curvature flow

We show that the space of asymptotically conical self-expanders of the mean curvature flow is a smooth Banach manifold. An immediate consequence is that non-degenerate self-expanders -- that is, those self-expanders that admit no non-trivial normal Jacobi fields that fix the asymptotic cone -- are generic in a certain sense.

Smooth compactness for spaces of asymptotically conical self-expanders of mean curvature flow

We show compactness in the locally smooth topology for certain natural families of asymptotically conical self-expanding solutions of mean curvature flow. Specifically, we show such compactness for the set of all two-dimensional self-expanders of a fixed topological type and, in all dimensions, for the set of self-expanders of low entropy and for the set of mean convex self-expanders with strictly mean convex asymptotic cones. From this we deduce that the natural projection map from the space of parameterizations of asymptotically conical self-expanders to the space of parameterizations of the asymptotic cones is proper for these classes.

An integer degree for asymptotically conical self-expanders

We establish the existence of an integer degree for the natural projection map from the space of parameterizations of asymptotically conical self-expanders to the space of parameterizations of the asymptotic cones when this map is proper. As an application we show that there is an open set in the space of cones in the three-dimensional Euclidean space for which each cone in the set has a strictly unstable self-expanding annuli asymptotic to it.

Neural Argument Generation Augmented with Externally Retrieved Evidence

High quality arguments are essential elements for human reasoning and decision-making processes. However, effective argument construction is a challenging task for both human and machines. In this work, we study a novel task on automatically generating arguments of a different stance for a given statement. We propose an encoder-decoder style neural network-based argument generation model enriched with externally retrieved evidence from Wikipedia. Our model first generates a set of talking point phrases as intermediate representation, followed by a separate decoder producing the final argument based on both input and the keyphrases. Experiments on a large-scale dataset collected from Reddit show that our model constructs arguments with more topic-relevant content than a popular sequence-to-sequence generation model according to both automatic evaluation and human assessments.

Test for Incremental Value of New Biomarkers Based on OR Rules

In early detection of disease, a single biomarker often has inadequate classification performance, making it important to identify new biomarkers to combine with the existing marker for improved performance. A biologically natural method to combine biomarkers is to use logic rules, e.g. the OR/AND rules. In our motivating example of early detection of pancreatic cancer, the established biomarker CA19-9 is only present in a subclass of cancer; it is of interest to identify new biomarkers present in the other subclasses and declare disease when either marker is positive. While there has been research on developing biomarker combinations using the OR/AND rules, the inference regarding the incremental value of the new marker within this framework is lacking and challenging due to a statistical non-regularity. In this paper, we aim to answer the inferential question of whether combining the new biomarker achieves better classification performance than using the existing biomarker alone, based on a nonparametrically estimated OR rule that maximizes the weighted average of sensitivity and specificity. We propose and compare various procedures for testing the incremental value of the new biomarker and constructing its confidence interval, using bootstrap, cross-validation, and a novel fuzzy p-value-based technique. We compare the performance of different methods via extensive simulation studies and apply them to the pancreatic cancer example.

Common and Individual Structure of Brain Networks

This article focuses on the problem of studying shared- and individual-specific structure in replicated networks or graph-valued data. In particular, the observed data consist of $n$ graphs, $G_i, i=1,\ldots,n$, with each graph consisting of a collection of edges between $V$ nodes. In brain connectomics, the graph for an individual corresponds to a set of interconnections among brain regions. Such data can be organized as a $V \times V$ binary adjacency matrix $A_i$ for each $i$, with ones indicating an edge between a pair of nodes and zeros indicating no edge. When nodes have a shared meaning across replicates $i=1,\ldots,n$, it becomes of substantial interest to study similarities and differences in the adjacency matrices. To address this problem, we propose a method to estimate a common structure and low-dimensional individual-specific deviations from replicated networks. The proposed Multiple GRAph Factorization (M-GRAF) model relies on a logistic regression mapping combined with a hierarchical eigenvalue decomposition. We develop an efficient algorithm for estimation and study basic properties of our approach. Simulation studies show excellent operating characteristics and we apply the method to human brain connectomics data.

Algebraic multigrid preconditioners for two-phase flow in porous media with phase transitions

Multiphase flow is a critical process in a wide range of applications, including oil and gas recovery, carbon sequestration, and contaminant remediation. Numerical simulation of multiphase flow requires solving of a large, sparse linear system resulting from the discretization of the partial differential equations modeling the flow. In the case of multiphase multicomponent flow with miscible effect, this is a very challenging task. The problem becomes even more difficult if phase transitions are taken into account. A new approach to handle phase transitions is to formulate the system as a nonlinear complementarity problem (NCP). Unlike in the primary variable switching technique, the set of primary variables in this approach is fixed even when there is phase transition. Not only does this improve the robustness of the nonlinear solver, it opens up the possibility to use multigrid methods to solve the resulting linear system. The disadvantage of the complementarity approach, however, is that when a phase disappears, the linear system has the structure of a saddle point problem and becomes indefinite, and current algebraic multigrid (AMG) algorithms cannot be applied directly. In this study, we explore the effectiveness of a new multilevel strategy, based on the multigrid reduction technique, to deal with problems of this type. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the method through numerical results for the case of two-phase, two-component flow with phase appearance/disappearance. We also show that the strategy is efficient and scales optimally with problem size.

Proton network flexibility enables robustness and large electric fields in the ketosteroid isomerase active site

Hydrogen bond networks play vital roles in biological functions ranging from protein folding to enzyme catalysis. Here we combine electronic structure calculations and ab initio path integral molecular dynamics simulations, which incorporate both nuclear and electronic quantum effects, to show why the network of short hydrogen bonds in the active site of ketosteroid isomerase is remarkably robust to mutations along the network and how this gives rise to large local electric fields. We demonstrate that these properties arise from the network's ability to respond to a perturbation by shifting proton positions and redistributing electronic charge density. This flexibility leads to small changes in properties such as the partial ionization of residues and $pK_a$ isotope effects upon mutation of the residues, consistent with recent experiments. This proton flexibility is further enhanced when an extended hydrogen bond network forms in the presence of an intermediate analog, which allows us to explain the chemical origins of the large electric fields in the enzyme's active site observed in recent experiments.

A study on combined effects of stochastic magnetic fluctuations and synchrotron radiation on the production of runaway electrons

The dynamics of relativistic runaway electrons are analyzed using the relativistic Fokker-Planck equation including deceleration due to the synchrotron radiation and radial diffusion loss caused by stochastic magnetic fluctuations (SMFs). SMFs are treated as friction force in [J. Martin-Solis et al., Phys. Plasmas 6, 3925 (1999)]. However, we think SMFs act as a porter in configuration space, but not directly affect the runaway electrons (REs) in momentum space. Both critical electric fields for sustainment of the existing REs and for avalanche onset are enhanced, and the modified avalanche growth rate is reduced by the combined effects of SMFs and synchrotron radiation as compared to the case with only synchrotron radiation [P. Aleynikov et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 155001 (2015)].

Impurity effects on residual zonal flow in deuterium (D)-tritium (T) plasmas

Significant effects of impurities on residual zonal flow (ZF) in deuterium (D)-tritium (T) plasmas are found. When the gyroradius of impurities is larger (smaller) than that of main ions, the intermediate scale (radial wavelength between trapped ion radial width $ρ_{bi}$ and trapped electron radial width $ρ_{be}$) residual ZF level is increased (decreased) due to the presence of various impurities with the tolerance concentration in JET and ITER, even for trace tungsten (W). For short scale (radial wavelength comparable to $ρ_{be}$) region, the residual ZF level is increased by most of the impurities. Moreover, the trend of stronger intermediate residual ZF in D-T plasmas with heavier effective isotope mass is weakened by non-trace impurities, but is not influenced by trace W. These results reveal that the presence of impurities can modify residual ZF, and possibly further affect the ZF regulation of turbulence as well as the associated anomalous transport and confinement in magnetic fusion plasmas. The potential relevance of our findings to experimental observations and simulation results is discussed.
