Quasi-1D Spin Textures: From Chiral Soliton Lattice to Fan State

In most helimagnets, an applied magnetic field aligns the propagation direction of a helical spin texture with the field, resulting in a conical state and obscuring the unwinding process. Here, we access a complementary regime in the anisotropic chiral magnet Mn$_{1.4}$PtSn, where crystal symmetry constrains the propagation direction of the spin modulation. Using resonant elastic X-ray scattering in a vector magnet, we track the evolution of quasi-one-dimensional spin textures that propagate along a chiral crystallographic axis while the magnetic field is applied perpendicular to this direction. Together with micromagnetic simulations, our measurements reveal a transformation from the zero-field $\pi$-chiral soliton lattice into a fan-like state. In this state, the propagation direction remains transverse to the applied field, while the spins oscillate about the field direction. During magnetization, the modulation length decreases continuously with the field and approaches the field-polarized state. Simulations indicate that magnetostatic interactions in finite samples play a key role in stabilizing this behavior. Our results provide evidence for a fan-like regime in a chiral magnet and highlight how field orientation can be used to control one-dimensional spin textures.

Linking extended vector wave fields with momentum space topology

Topology describes properties of physical systems that remain constant under continuous deformations. For infinite vector waves, global topological invariants in position space are typically associated with periodic patterns. We demonstrate that even for aperiodic Helmholtz-decomposable wave fields, possessing only the wave's intrinsic periodicity, a topological invariant can be found in momentum space. This invariant, the linking number, represents a Berry phase. By utilizing electromagnetic and hydrodynamic surface waves, we confirm the robustness of the linking number against deformations, and experimentally observe discrete transitions between distinct topological sectors. The linking number captures the topology of vector wave fields across both continuous and discrete momentum spaces. Our work introduces a unified topological framework for vector wave fields, enabling their classification via a global invariant.

Field-induced condensation of $\pi$ to 2$\pi$ soliton lattices in chiral magnets

Chiral soliton lattices (CSLs) are nontrivial spin textures that emerge from the competition between Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, anisotropy, and magnetic fields. While well established in monoaxial helimagnets, their role in materials with anisotropic, direction-dependent chirality remains poorly understood. Here, we report the direct observation of a tunable transition from $\pi$ to 2$\pi$ soliton lattices in the non-centrosymmetric Heusler compound Mn1.4PtSn. Using Lorentz transmission electron microscopy, resonant elastic X-ray scattering, and micromagnetic simulations, we identify a $\pi$-CSL as the magnetic ground state, in contrast to the expected helical phase, which evolves into a classical 2$\pi$-CSL under increasing out-of-plane magnetic fields. This transition is governed by a delicate interplay between uniaxial magnetocrystalline anisotropy and magnetostatic interactions, as captured by a double sine-Gordon model. Our analysis not only reveals the microscopic mechanisms stabilizing these soliton lattices but also demonstrates their general relevance to materials with D2d, S4, Cnv, or Cn symmetries. The results establish a broadly applicable framework for understanding magnetic phase diagrams in chiral systems, with implications for soliton-based spintronic devices and topological transport phenomena.

All-electrical detection of skyrmion lattice state and chiral surface twists

We study the high-temperature phase diagram of the chiral magnetic insulator Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$ by measuring the spin-Hall magnetoresistance (SMR) in a thin Pt electrode. We find distinct changes in the phase and amplitude of the SMR signal at critical lines separating different magnetic phases of bulk Cu$_2$OSeO$_3$. The skyrmion lattice state appears as a strong dip in the SMR phase. A strong enhancement of the SMR amplitude is observed in the conical spiral state, which we explain by an additional symmetry-allowed contribution to the SMR present in non-collinear magnets. We demonstrate that the SMR can be used as an all-electrical probe of chiral surface twists and skyrmions in magnetic insulators.

Robust skyrmion-bubble textures in SrRuO$_3$ thin films stabilized by magnetic anisotropy

Topological spin textures in an itinerant ferromagnet, SrRuO$_3$ is studied combining Hall transport measurements and numerical simulations. We observe characteristic signatures of the Topological Hall Effect associated with skyrmions. A relatively large thickness of our films and absence of heavy metal layers make the interfacial Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction an unlikely source of these topological spin textures. Additionally, the transport anomalies exhibit an unprecedented robustness to magnetic field tilting and temperature. Our numerical simulations suggest that this unconventional behavior results from magnetic bubbles with skyrmion topology stabilized by magnetodipolar interactions in an unexpected region of parameter space.

Nonlinear optics in Xe-filled hollow-core PCF in high pressure and supercritical regimes

Supercritical Xe at 293 K offers a Kerr nonlinearity that can exceed that of fused silica while being free of Raman scattering. It also has a much higher optical damage threshold and a transparency window that extends from the UV to the infrared. We report the observation of nonlinear phenomena, such as self-phase modulation, in hollow-core photonic crystal fiber filled with supercritical Xe. In the subcritical regime, intermodal four-wave-mixing resulted in the generation of UV light in the HE12 mode. The normal dispersion of the fiber at high pressures means that spectral broadening can clearly obtained without influence from soliton effects or material damage.
