Thin single-crystal perovskite detector for high-energy charged particles

The organometal halide perovskites (OMHP) semi-conductors have shown recently a strong potential as radiation detectors, beside the well-known success in photovoltaics and as photo-detectors. Many studies have been published on X-rays detection, and a few studies about detection of alpha, beta-particles and protons. Less literature is present for high energy charged particles. OMHP-based devices for tracking and real-time monitoring for high energy particles may offer many advantages. OMHPs can be directly grown on pixelated electronics, even on curved substrates, without the need of complex and expensive bump-bonding procedures. Moreover, OMHPs have shown self-healing features after radiation exposure, which makes them attractive for high-flux applications. In this paper we report a device based on a thin single OMHP crystal, about 150 mum thick, directly grown on a patterned substrate through dewetting technique, able to detect high-energy charged particles in a high dynamic range of incident fluxes. A dedicated electronics circuit has been developed to match the expected time characteristics of the OMHP crystals. This is the first demonstration of thin OMHP single crystals being able to detect high energy charged particles of hundreds of MeV.

Note on lattice regularization and equal-time correlators for parton distribution functions

We show that a recent interesting idea to circumvent the difficulties with the continuation of parton distribution functions to the Euclidean region, that consists in looking at equal time correlators between proton states of infinite momentum, encounters some problems related to the power divergent mixing pattern of DIS operators, when implemented within the lattice regularization.

On the color structure of Yang-Mills theory with static sources in a periodic box

We present an exploratory numerical study on the lattice of the color structure of the wave functionals of the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory in the presence of a $q\bar q$ static pair. In a spatial box with periodic boundary conditions we discuss the fact that all states contributing to the Feynman propagation kernel are global color singlets. We confirm this numerically by computing the correlations of gauge-fixed Polyakov lines with color-twisted boundary conditions in the time direction. The values of the lowest energies in the color singlet and octet external source sectors agree within statistical errors, confirming that both channels contribute to the lowest (global singlet) state of the Feynman kernel. We then study the case of homogeneous boundary conditions in the time direction for which the gauge-fixing is not needed. In this case the lowest energies extracted in the singlet external source sector agree with those determined with periodic boundary conditions, while in the octet sector the correlator is compatible with being null within our statistical errors. Therefore consistently only the singlet external source contribution has a non-vanishing overlap with the null-field wave functional.

Getting the Lorentz transformations without requiring an invariant speed

The structure of the Lorentz transformations follows purely from the absence of privileged inertial reference frames and the group structure (closure under composition) of the transformations---two assumptions that are simple and physically necessary. The existence of an invariant speed is \textit{not} a necessary assumption, and in fact is a consequence of the principle of relativity (though the finite value of this speed must, of course, be obtained from experiment). Von Ignatowsky derived this result in 1911, but it is still not widely known and is absent from most textbooks. Here we present a completely elementary proof of the result, suitable for use in an introductory course in special relativity.

QED Corrections to Hadronic Processes in Lattice QCD

In this paper, for the first time a method is proposed to compute electromagnetic effects in hadronic processes using lattice simulations. The method can be applied, for example, to the leptonic and semileptonic decays of light or heavy pseudoscalar mesons. For these quantities the presence of infrared divergences in intermediate stages of the calculation makes the procedure much more complicated than is the case for the hadronic spectrum, for which calculations already exist. In order to compute the physical widths, diagrams with virtual photons must be combined with those corresponding to the emission of real photons. Only in this way do the infrared divergences cancel as first understood by Bloch and Nordsieck in 1937. We present a detailed analysis of the method for the leptonic decays of a pseudoscalar meson. The implementation of our method, although challenging, is within reach of the present lattice technology.

On the Geometry of Surface Stress

We present a fully general derivation of the Laplace--Young formula and discuss the interplay between the intrinsic surface geometry and the extrinsic one ensuing from the immersion of the surface in the ordinary euclidean three-dimensional space. We prove that the (reversible) work done in a general surface deformation can be expressed in terms of the surface stress tensor and the variation of the intrinsic surface metric.

A global fit to determine the pseudoscalar mixing angle and the gluonium content of the eta' meson

We update the values of the eta-eta' mixing angle and of the eta' gluonium content by fitting our measurement R_phi = BR(phi to eta' gamma)/ BR(phi to eta gamma) together with several vector meson radiative decays to pseudoscalars (V to P gamma), pseudoscalar mesons radiative decays to vectors (P to V gamma) and the eta' to gamma gamma, pi^0 to gamma gamma widths. From the fit we extract a gluonium fraction of Z^2_G = 0.12 +- 0.04, the pseudoscalar mixing angle psi_P = (40.4 +- 0.6) degree and the phi-omega mixing angle psi_V = (3.32 +- 0.09) degree. Z^2_G and psi_P are fairly consistent with those previously published. We also evaluate the impact on the eta' gluonium content determination of future experimental improvements of the eta' branching ratios and decay width.

Study of the a_0(980) meson via the radiative decay phi->eta pi^0 gamma with the KLOE detector

We have studied the phi->a_0(980) gamma process with the KLOE detector at the Frascati phi-factory DAPhNE by detecting the phi->eta pi^0 gamma decays in the final states with eta->gamma gamma and eta->pi^+ pi^- pi^0. We have measured the branching ratios for both final states: Br(phi->eta pi^0 gamma)=(7.01 +/- 0.10 +/- 0.20)x10^-5 and (7.12 +/- 0.13 +/- 0.22)x10^-5 respectively. We have also extracted the a_0(980) mass and its couplings to eta pi^0, K^+ K^-, and to the phi meson from the fit of the eta pi^0 invariant mass distributions using different phenomenological models.

Search for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma with the KLOE experiment

We have searched for the decay phi -> K0 K0bar gamma, by detecting K_s pairs plus a photon and with the K_s-mesons decaying to pi^+ pi^-, in a sample of about 1.5x 10^9 phi-decays collected by the KLOE experiment at DAFNE. The reaction proceeds through the intermediate states f_0(980) gamma, a_0(980) gamma. We find five events with 3.2 events expected from background processes. We obtain the upper limit: BR (phi -> K0 K0bar gamma) < 1.9x10^-8 at 90% C.L. .

Measurement of the branching ratio and search for a CP violating asymmetry in the eta -> pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay at KLOE

We have studied the eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma) decay using about 1.7 fb^-1 collected by the KLOE experiment at the DAFNE phi-factory. This corresponds to about 72 millions eta mesons produced in phi radiative decays. We have measured the branching ratio, inclusive of radiative effects, with 4% accuracy: BR(eta->pi+pi-e+e-(gamma)) = (26.8 +/- 0.9_Stat. +/- 0.7_Syst.) x 10^-5. We have obtained the first measurement of the CP-odd pipi-ee decay planes angular asymmetry, A_phi = (-0.6 +/- 2.5_Stat. +/- 1.8_Syst.) x 10^-2.

Measurement of the absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma) decay with the KLOE detector

We have measured the absolute branching ratio of the K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma) decay, using about 20 million tagged K+ mesons collected with the KLOE detector at DAFNE, the Frascati phi-factory. Signal counts are obtained from the fit of the distribution of the momentum of the charged decay particle in the kaon rest frame. The result, inclusive of final-state radiation, is BR(K+ -> pi+ pi0 (gamma))=0.2065+/-0.0005_{stat}+/- 0.0008_{syst}.

Study of the process e+e- -> omega pi0 in the phi-meson mass region with the KLOE detector

We have studied the e+e- -> omegapi0 cross section in the sqrt(s) interval 1000-1030 MeV using the pi+pi-pi0pi0 and pi0pi0gamma final states with a sample of ~600 pb^-1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAFNE. By fitting the observed interference pattern around M_phi for both final states, we extract the ratio of the decay widths Gamma(omega->pi0gamma)/Gamma(omega->pi+pi-pi0) = 0.0897 +- 0.0016 and derive the branching fractions BR(omega -> pi+pi-pi0)= (90.24 +- 0.19)%, BR(omega -> pi0gamma) = (8.09 +- 0.14)%. The parameters describing the e+e- -> omegapi0 reaction around M_ϕare also used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating phi -> omegapi0 decay: BR(phi->omegapi0) = (4.4 +- 0.6)x10^-5.

Monitoring the Bragg peak location of 73 MeV/u carbon ions by means of prompt $γ$-ray measurements

By means of a time-of-flight technique, we measured the longitudinal profile of prompt $γ$-rays emitted by 73 MeV/u $^{13}$C ions irradiating a PMMA target. This technique allowed us to minimize the shielding against neutrons and scattered $γ$-rays, and to correlate prompt gamma emission to the ion path. This correlation, together with a high counting rate, paves the way toward real-time monitoring of the longitudinal dose profile during ion therapy treatments. Moreover, the time correlation between the prompt gamma detection and the transverse position of the incident ions measured by a beam monitor can provide real-time 3D control of the irradiation.

Study of the process e+e- -> omega p0 with the KLOE detector

Using ~600 pb-1 collected with the KLOE detector at DAPhiNE, we have studied the production cross section of pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 and p0p0 gamma final states in e+e- collisions at center of mass energies between 1000 and 1030 MeV. By fitting the observed interference pattern around Mphi for both final states, we extract a measurement (preliminary) for the ratio Gamma(omega -> pi0 gamma)/Gamma(omega -> pi+ pi- pi0) = 0.0934 +- 0.0022. Since these two final states represent the 98% of the omega decay channels, we use unitarity to derive BR(omega -> pi+pi-pi0)= (89.94 +- 0.23)% and BR(omega -> pi0 gamma) = (8.40 +- 0.19)%. Moreover, the parameters describing the e+e- -> pi+ pi- pi0 pi0 reaction around Mphi are used to extract the branching fraction for the OZI and G-parity violating phi -> omega pi0 decay: BR(phi -> omega pi0) = (5.63 +- 0.70) x 10^-5.
