The Traveling Salesman Problem Under Squared Euclidean Distances

Let $P$ be a set of points in $\mathbb{R}^d$, and let $α\ge 1$ be a real number. We define the distance between two points $p,q\in P$ as $|pq|^α$, where $|pq|$ denotes the standard Euclidean distance between $p$ and $q$. We denote the traveling salesman problem under this distance function by TSP($d,α$). We design a 5-approximation algorithm for TSP(2,2) and generalize this result to obtain an approximation factor of $3^{α-1}+\sqrt{6}^α/3$ for $d=2$ and all $α\ge2$. We also study the variant Rev-TSP of the problem where the traveling salesman is allowed to revisit points. We present a polynomial-time approximation scheme for Rev-TSP$(2,α)$ with $α\ge2$, and we show that Rev-TSP$(d, α)$ is APX-hard if $d\ge3$ and $α>1$. The APX-hardness proof carries over to TSP$(d, α)$ for the same parameter ranges.

Cache-Oblivious Selection in Sorted X+Y Matrices

Let X[0..n-1] and Y[0..m-1] be two sorted arrays, and define the mxn matrix A by A[j][i]=X[i]+Y[j]. Frederickson and Johnson gave an efficient algorithm for selecting the k-th smallest element from A. We show how to make this algorithm IO-efficient. Our cache-oblivious algorithm performs O((m+n)/B) IOs, where B is the block size of memory transfers.

Sparse geometric graphs with small dilation

Given a set S of n points in R^D, and an integer k such that 0 <= k < n, we show that a geometric graph with vertex set S, at most n - 1 + k edges, maximum degree five, and dilation O(n / (k+1)) can be computed in time O(n log n). For any k, we also construct planar n-point sets for which any geometric graph with n-1+k edges has dilation Omega(n/(k+1)); a slightly weaker statement holds if the points of S are required to be in convex position.
