A simplified characterization of stable-like heat kernel estimates

We study heat kernel estimates for symmetric pure jump processes on general metric measure spaces. Building on recent progress in the local setting due to S.~Eriksson-Bique, we develop a non-local version of the Whitney blending technique and use it to relate stable-like heat kernel estimates to capacity upper bounds. Under two-sided stable-like bounds on the jump kernel, we show that a capacity upper bound across annuli implies a cutoff Sobolev inequality, and we obtain a characterization of stable-like heat kernel estimates in terms of these conditions. As a consequence, we give an affirmative answer to a conjecture of A. Grigor'yan, E. Hu, and J. Hu.

Uniqueness of the maximal solution of the supercooled Stefan problem in 1D

We prove uniqueness of the maximal weak solutions to the supercooled Stefan problem in 1 dimension. This follows by showing that in 1 dimension, the optimal solution of the corresponding free target optimal transport problem given in \cite{GeneralDimensions}, is independent of the choice of the cost function. Moreover, we show that the supercooled Stefan problem lacks monotonicity and $L^1$-Lipschitz stability, which are available in a similar problem considered in a previous paper \cite{freetarget}. However, in $1$ dimension, it has stability in the weak convergence of measures.

On the energy image density conjecture of Bouleau and Hirsch

We affirmatively resolve the energy image density conjecture of Bouleau and Hirsch (1986). Beyond the original framework of Dirichlet structures, we establish the energy image density property in several related settings. In particular, we formulate a version of the property that encompasses strongly local, regular Dirichlet forms, Sobolev spaces defined via upper gradients, and self-similar energies on fractals, thereby unifying these under a single framework. As applications, we prove the finiteness of the martingale dimension for diffusions satisfying sub-Gaussian heat kernel bounds, and we obtain a new proof of a conjecture of Cheeger concerning the Hausdorff dimension of the images of differentiability charts in PI spaces. The proof of the energy image density property is based on a structure theorem for measures and normal currents in $\mathbb{R}^n$ due to De Philippis--Rindler, together with the notions of decomposability bundles due to Alberti--Marchese and cone null sets due to Alberti--Cs\"ornyei--Preiss and Bate.

Martingale and analytic dimensions coincide under Gaussian heat kernel bounds

Given a strongly local Dirichlet form on a metric measure space that satisfies Gaussian heat kernel bounds, we show that the martingale dimension of the associated diffusion process coincides with Cheeger's analytic dimension of the underlying metric measure space. More precisely, we show that the pointwise version of the martingale dimension introduced by Hino (called the pointwise index) almost everywhere equals the pointwise dimension of the measurable differentiable structure constructed by Cheeger. Using known properties of spaces that admit a measurable differentiable structure, we show that the martingale dimension is bounded from above by the Hausdorff dimension of the underlying metric space, thereby extending an earlier bound obtained by Hino for some self-similar sets.

Diffusions and random walks with prescribed sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates

Given suitable functions $V, \Psi:[0,\infty) \to [0,\infty)$, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on $V,\Psi$ for the existence of a metric measure space and a symmetric diffusion process that satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with volume growth profile $V$ and escape time profile $\Psi$. We prove sufficiency by constructing a new family of diffusions. Special cases of this construction also leads to a new family of infinite graphs whose simple random walks satisfy sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates with prescribed volume growth and escape time profiles. In particular, these random walks on graphs generalizes earlier results of Barlow who considered the case $V(r)=r^\alpha$ and $\Psi(r)=r^\beta$ (Rev Mat Iberoam 2004). The family of diffusions we construct have martingale dimension one but can have arbitrarily high spectral dimension. Therefore our construction shows the impossibility of obtaining non-trivial lower bounds on martingale dimension in terms of spectral dimension which is in contrast with upper bounds on martingale dimension using spectral dimension obtained by Hino (Probab Theory Relat Fields 2013).

Heat kernel estimates for boundary traces of reflected diffusions on uniform domains

We study the boundary trace processes of reflected diffusions on uniform domains. We obtain stable-like heat kernel estimates for such a boundary trace process when the diffusion on the underlying ambient space satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates. Our arguments rely on new results of independent interest such as sharp two-sided estimates and the volume doubling property of the harmonic measure, the existence of a continuous extension of the Na\"im kernel to the topological boundary, and the Doob--Na\"im formula identifying the Dirichlet form of the boundary trace process as the pure-jump Dirichlet form whose jump kernel with respect to the harmonic measure is exactly (the continuous extension of) the Na\"im kernel.

First-order Sobolev spaces, self-similar energies and energy measures on the Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet

We construct and investigate $(1, p)$-Sobolev space, $p$-energy, and the corresponding $p$-energy measures on the planar Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet for all $p \in (1, \infty)$. Our method is based on the idea of Kusuoka and Zhou [Probab. Theory Related Fields $\textbf{93}$ (1992), no. 2, 169--196], where Brownian motion (the case $p = 2$) on self-similar sets including the planar Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet were constructed. Similar to this earlier work, we use a sequence of discrete graph approximations and the corresponding discrete $p$-energies to define the Sobolev space and $p$-energies. However, we need a new approach to ensure that our $(1, p)$-Sobolev space has a dense set of continuous functions when $p$ is less than the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension. The new ingredients are the use of Loewner type estimates on combinatorial modulus to obtain Poincar\'e inequality and elliptic Harnack inequality on a sequence of approximating graphs. An important feature of our Sobolev space is the self-similarity of our $p$-energy, which allows us to define corresponding $p$-energy measures on the planar Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet. We show that our Sobolev space can also be viewed as a Korevaar-Schoen type space. We apply our results to the attainment problem for Ahlfors regular conformal dimension of the Sierpi\'{n}ski carpet. In particular, we show that if the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension, say $\dim_{\mathrm{ARC}}$, is attained, then any optimal measure which attains $\dim_{\mathrm{ARC}}$ should be comparable with the $\dim_{\mathrm{ARC}}$-energy measure of some function in our $(1, \dim_{\mathrm{ARC}})$-Sobolev space up to a multiplicative constant. In this case, we also prove that the Newton-Sobolev space corresponding to any optimal measure and metric can be identified as our self-similar $(1, \dim_{\mathrm{ARC}})$-Sobolev space.

Heat kernel for reflected diffusion and extension property on uniform domains

We study reflected diffusion on uniform domains where the underlying space admits a symmetric diffusion that satisfies sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimates. A celebrated theorem of Jones (Acta Math. 1981) states that uniform domains in Euclidean space are extension domains for Sobolev spaces. In this work, we obtain a similar extension property for metric spaces equipped with a Dirichlet form whose heat kernel satisfies a sub-Gaussian estimate. We introduce a scale-invariant version of this extension property and apply it to show that the reflected diffusion process on such a uniform domain inherits various properties from the ambient space, such as Harnack inequalities, cutoff energy inequality, and sub-Gaussian heat kernel bounds. In particular, our work extends Neumann heat kernel estimates of Gyrya and Saloff-Coste (Ast\'erisque 2011) beyond the Gaussian space-time scaling. Furthermore, our estimates on the extension operator imply that the energy measure of the boundary of a uniform domain is always zero. This property of the energy measure is a broad generalization of Hino's result (PTRF 2013) that proves the vanishing of the energy measure on the outer square boundary of the standard Sierpi\'nski carpet equipped with the self-similar Dirichlet form.

Counterexamples to elliptic Harnack inequality for isotropic unimodal L\'{e}vy processes

Until now, it has been an open question whether every subordinated Brownian motion (SBM) satisfies the elliptic Harnack inequality (EHI). In this paper, we show that the answer is ``no." In our first theorem, we show that if $X=(X_t)_{t \geq 0}$ is an isotropic unimodal L\'{e}vy process, and $X$ satisfies certain criteria (involving the jump kernel of $X$ and the distribution of the location upon first exiting balls of various sizes) then $X$ does not satisfy EHI. (Note that the class of isotropic unimodal L\'{e}vy processes is larger than the class of SBMs.) We then check that many specific SBMs do indeed satisfy the criteria, and thus do not satify EHI.

Conformal Assouad dimension as the critical exponent for combinatorial modulus

The conformal Assouad dimension is the infimum of all possible values of Assouad dimension after a quasisymmetric change of metric. We show that the conformal Assouad dimension equals a critical exponent associated to the combinatorial modulus for any compact doubling metric space. This generalizes a similar result obtained by Carrasco Piaggio for the Ahlfors regular conformal dimension to a larger family of spaces. We also show that the value of conformal Assouad dimension is unaffected if we replace quasisymmetry with power quasisymmetry in its definition.

Helmholtz Solutions for the Fractional Laplacian and Other Related Operators

We show that the bounded solutions to the fractional Helmholtz equation, $(-\Delta)^s u= u$ for $0<s<1$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, are given by the bounded solutions to the classical Helmholtz equation $(-\Delta)u= u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$ for $n \ge 2$ when $u$ is additionally assumed to be vanishing at $\infty$. When $n=1$, we show that the bounded fractional Helmholtz solutions are again given by the classical solutions $A\cos{x} + B\sin{x}$. We show that this classification of fractional Helmholtz solutions extends for $1<s \le 2$ and $s\in \mathbb{N}$ when $u \in C^\infty(\mathbb{R}^n)$. Finally, we prove that the classical solutions are the unique bounded solutions to the more general equation $\psi(-\Delta) u= \psi(1)u$ in $\mathbb{R}^n$, when $\psi$ is complete Bernstein and certain regularity conditions are imposed on the associated weight $a(t)$.

On the comparison between jump processes and subordinated diffusions

Given a symmetric diffusion process and a jump process on the same underlying space, is there a subordinator such that the jump process and the subordinated diffusion processes are comparable? We address this question when the diffusion satisfies a sub-Gaussian heat kernel estimate and the jump process satisfies a polynomial-type jump kernel bounds. Under these assumptions, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions on the jump kernel estimate for such a subordinator to exist. As an application of our results and the recent stability results of Chen, Kumagai, and Wang, we obtain parabolic Harnack inequality for a large family of jump processes. In particular, we show that any jump process with polynomial-type jump kernel bounds on such a space satisfies the parabolic Harnack inequality.

On the conformal walk dimension: Quasisymmetric uniformization for symmetric diffusions

We introduce the notion of conformal walk dimension, which serves as a bridge between elliptic and parabolic Harnack inequalities. The importance of this notion is due to the fact that, for a given strongly local, regular symmetric Dirichlet space in which every metric ball has compact closure (MMD space), the finiteness of the conformal walk dimension characterizes the conjunction of the metric doubling property and the elliptic Harnack inequality. Roughly speaking, the conformal walk dimension of an MMD space is defined as the infimum over all possible values of the walk dimension with which the parabolic Harnack inequality can be made to hold by a time change of the associated diffusion and by a quasisymmetric change of the metric. We show that the conformal walk dimension of any MMD space satisfying the metric doubling property and the elliptic Harnack inequality is two, and provide a necessary condition for a pair of such changes to attain the infimum defining the conformal walk dimension when it is attained by the original pair. We also prove a necessary condition for the existence of such a pair attaining the infimum in the setting of a self-similar Dirichlet form on a self-similar set, and apply it to show that the infimum fails to be attained for the Vicsek set and the $N$-dimensional Sierpi\'{n}ski gasket with $N\geq 3$, in contrast to the attainment for the two-dimensional Sierpi\'{n}ski gasket due to Kigami [Math. Ann. 340 (2008), no. 4, 781--804].

Geometric implications of fast volume growth and capacity estimates

We obtain connectivity of annuli for a volume doubling metric measure Dirichlet space which satisfies a Poincar\'e inequality, a capacity estimate and a fast volume growth condition. This type of connectivity was introduced by Grigor'yan and Saloff-Coste in order to obtain stability results for Harnack inequalities and to study diffusions on manifolds with ends. As an application of our result, we obtain stability of the elliptic Harnack inequality under perturbations of the Dirichlet form with radial type weights.

Parabolic Harnack inequality implies the existence of jump kernel

We prove that the parabolic Harnack inequality implies the existence of jump kernel for symmetric pure jump process. This allows us to remove a technical assumption on the jumping measure in the recent characterization of the parabolic Harnack inequality for pure jump processes by Chen, Kumagai and Wang. The key ingredients of our proof are the L\'evy system formula and a near-diagonal heat kernel lower bound.

On singularity of energy measures for symmetric diffusions with full off-diagonal heat kernel estimates

We show that for a strongly local, regular symmetric Dirichlet form over a complete, locally compact geodesic metric space, full off-diagonal heat kernel estimates with walk dimension strictly larger than two (\emph{sub-Gaussian} estimates) imply the singularity of the energy measures with respect to the symmetric measure, verifying a conjecture by M.\ T.\ Barlow in [Contemp.\ Math., vol.\ 338, 2003, pp.\ 11--40]. We also prove that in the contrary case of walk dimension two, i.e., where full off-diagonal \emph{Gaussian} estimates of the heat kernel hold, the symmetric measure and the energy measures are mutually absolutely continuous in the sense that a Borel subset of the state space has measure zero for the symmetric measure if and only if it has measure zero for the energy measures of all functions in the domain of the Dirichlet form.

On the length of chains in a metric space

We obtain an upper bound on the minimal number of points in an $\epsilon$-chain joining two points in a metric space. This generalizes a bound due to Hambly and Kumagai (1999) for the case of resistance metric on certain self-similar fractals. As an application, we deduce a condition on $\epsilon$-chains introduced by Grigor'yan and Telcs (2012). This allows us to obtain sharp bounds on the heat kernel for spaces satisfying the parabolic Harnack inequality without assuming further conditions on the metric. A snowflake transform on the Euclidean space shows that our bound is sharp.
