Quantum Key Distribution with Imperfections: Recent Advances in Security Proofs

In contrast to classical public-key cryptosystems, where the security of encoded messages relies on on computational assumptions, Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) enables two distant parties to establish a shared secret key that, when combined with a one-time pad, provides information-theoretically secure encryption, provided that the QKD protocol is supported by a rigorous security proof. In the last decades, security proofs robust against a wide range of eavesdropping strategies have established the theoretical soundness of several QKD protocols. However, most proofs are based on idealized models of the physical systems involved in such protocols and often include assumptions that are not satisfied in practical implementations. This mismatch creates a gap between theoretical security guarantees and actual experimental realizations, making QKD protocols vulnerable to attacks. To ensure the security of real-world QKD systems, it is therefore essential to account for imperfections in security analyses. In this article, we present an overview of recent analytical and numerical developments in QKD security proofs, which provide a versatile approach for incorporating imperfections and re-establishing the security of quantum communication protocols under realistic conditions.

Universal sectors of two-dimensional Carrollian CFTs

We revisit modular invariance in two-dimensional Carrollian conformal field theories from a geometric perspective. Focusing on the characters of the induced and highest-weight representations of the theory, we show that there are regions of parameter space where the vacuum character dominates in the dual channel. We use this property to zoom into different subsectors of the Carrollian theory. One of them is reminiscent of the Schwarzian sector of a relativistic CFT2 and has a flat space holographic interpretation as O-plane orbifold. It exists only for the highest-weight representation. We prove that for all sectors with vacuum dominance in the dual channel, the specific heat is negative, concurrent with the holographic interpretation of the negative specific heat of asymptotically flat spacetimes with horizons.

Soft gravitons in three dimensions

We consider quantum gravity with zero cosmological constant in three dimensions. First, we show that pure quantum gravity can be written as a magnetic Carrollian theory living on null infinity, described by Schwarzian-like degrees of freedom. Next, we couple quantum gravity to massless matter. Transition amplitudes exhibit several features that resemble soft graviton physics in four dimensions, despite the absence of a propagating graviton. As in four dimensions, we find three equivalent results: a soft graviton theorem, an infinite-dimensional BMS asymptotic symmetry, and a gravitational memory effect. We also resolve some extant puzzles concerning the partition function and Hilbert space of pure 3d gravity with zero cosmological constant.

Quantizing Carrollian field theories

Carrollian field theories have recently emerged as a candidate dual to flat space quantum gravity. We carefully quantize simple two-derivative Carrollian theories, revealing a strong sensitivity to the ultraviolet. They can be regulated upon being placed on a spatial lattice and working at finite inverse temperature. Unlike in conventional field theories, the details of the lattice-regulated Carrollian theories remain important at long distances even in the limit that the lattice spacing is sent to zero. We use that limit to define interacting continuum models with a tractable perturbative expansion. The ensuing theories are those of generalized free fields, with non-Gaussian correlations suppressed by positive powers of the lattice spacing, and an unbroken supertranslation symmetry.

Carrollian c-functions and flat space holographic RG flows in BMS3/CCFT2

We discuss c-functions and their holographic counterpart for two-dimensional field theories with Carrollian conformal fixed points in the UV and the IR. Specifically, we construct asymptotically flat domain wall solutions of three-dimensional Einstein-dilaton gravity that model holographic RG flows between BMS3 invariant UV and IR fixed points. We prove three theorems for such flows: 1. for every holographic RG flow in AdS3, there is a corresponding one in flat space, 2. the BMS central charge in the UV cannot be smaller than in the IR, and 3. the UV/IR ratio of Virasoro central charges is identical to the UV/IR ratio of corresponding BMS central charges. Finally, we tentatively propose a Casini-Huerta-like c-functions for BMS3-invariant quantum field theories, inspired by the AdS3/CFT2 relation between monotonicity of the c-function and the quantum null energy condition.

BMS modular covariance and structure constants

Two-dimensional (2d) field theories invariant under the Bondi-Metzner-Sachs algebra, or 2d BMSFTs in short, are putative holographic duals of Einstein gravity in 3d asymptotically flat spacetimes. When defined on a torus, these field theories come equipped with a modified modular structure. We use the modular covariance of the BMS torus two-point function to develop formulae for different three-point structure constants of the field theory. These structure constants indicate that BMSFTs follow the eigenstate thermalization hypothesis, albeit with some interesting changes to usual 2d CFTs. The singularity structures of the structure constants contain information on perturbations of cosmological horizons in 3d asymptotically flat spacetimes, which we show can also be obtained as a limit of BTZ quasinormal modes.

BMS Field Theories with $\mathfrak{u}(1)$ Symmetry

We investigate quantum field theories in two dimensions (2d) with an underlying Bondi-van der Burgh-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) symmetry augmented by $\mathfrak{u}(1)$ currents. These field theories are expected to holographically capture features of charged versions of cosmological solutions in asymptotically flat 3d spacetimes called Flat Space Cosmologies (FSCs). We conduct a study of the modular properties of these field theories. The characters for the highest weight representations of the symmetry algebra are constructed, and the partition function of the theory is obtained from them. We derive the density of (primary) states and find the entropy and asymptotic values of the structure constants exploiting the modular properties of the partition function and the torus one-point function. The expression for the asymptotic structure constants shows shifts in the weights and one of the central terms and an extra phase compared to the earlier results in the literature for BMS invariant theories without $\mathfrak{u}(1)$ currents present. We reproduce our field results for the structure constants by a bulk computation involving a scalar probe in the background of a charged FSC.

Non-Lorentzian Chaos and Cosmological Holography

We study chaos in non-Lorentzian field theories, specifically Galilean and Carrollian conformal field theories in two dimensions. In a large central charge limit, we find that the Lyapunov exponent saturates the bound on chaos, conjectured originally for relativistic field theories. We recover the same Lyapunov exponent holographically by a shock-wave calculation in three-dimensional flat space cosmologies, providing further evidence for flat space holography.

Scalar Fields in 3D Asymptotically Flat Higher-Spin Gravity

In this work we construct a novel associative algebra and use it to define a theory of higher-spin gravity in (2+1)-dimensional asymptotically flat spacetimes. Our construction is based on a quotient of the universal enveloping algebra (UEA) of $\mathfrak{isl}(2,\mathbb{R})$ with respect to the ideal generated by its Casimir elements, the mass squared $\mathcal{M}^2$ and the three-dimensional analogue of the square of the Pauli-Lubanski vector $\mathcal{S}$ and propose to call the resulting associative algebra $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$. We provide a definition of its generators and even though we are not yet able to provide the complete set of multiplication rules of this algebra our analysis allows us to study many interesting and relevant sub-structures of $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$. We then show how to consistently couple a scalar field to an $\mathfrak{ihs}(\mathcal{M}^2,\mathcal{S})$ higher-spin gauge theory.

Uniformization of Entanglement Entropy in Holographic Warped Conformal Field Theories

Using a uniformization map we determine the holographic entanglement entropy for states of a Warped Conformal Field Theory dual to a generic vacuum metric in AdS$_3$ gravity with Comp\`ere--Song--Strominger boundary conditions. We point out how that expression could lead to inequalities that can be interpreted as quantum energy conditions for Warped Conformal Field Theories.

Geometric actions and flat space holography

In this paper we perform the Hamiltonian reduction of the action for three-dimensional Einstein gravity with vanishing cosmological constant using the Chern-Simons formulation and Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs (BMS) boundary conditions. An equivalent formulation of the boundary action is the geometric action on BMS$_3$ coadjoint orbits, where the orbit representative is identified as the bulk holonomy. We use this reduced action to compute one-loop contributions to the torus partition function of all BMS$_3$ descendants of Minkowski spacetime and cosmological solutions in flat space. We then consider Wilson lines in the ISO$(2,1)$ Chern-Simons theory with endpoints on the boundary, whose reduction to the boundary theory gives a bilocal operator. We use the expectation values and two-point correlation functions of these bilocal operators to compute quantum contributions to the entanglement entropy of a single interval for BMS$_3$ invariant field theories and BMS$_3$ blocks, respectively. While semi-classically the BMS$_3$ boundary theory has central charges $c_1 = 0$ and $c_2 = 3/G_N$, we find that quantum corrections in flat space do not renormalize $G_N$, but rather lead to a non-zero $c_1$.

Local quantum energy conditions in non-Lorentz-invariant quantum field theories

We provide the first example of local quantum energy conditions in quantum field theories that are not Lorentz invariant. We focus on field theories in two dimensions with infinite-dimensional symmetries, like the ones governed by the Bondi-van der Burg-Metzner-Sachs group that appear in the context of flat space holography. Reminiscent of holographic results on the quantum null energy condition, we prove that our new energy conditions saturate for states in the field theory that are dual to vacuum solutions of three-dimensional Einstein gravity with vanishing cosmological constant.

Invariance of Unruh and Hawking radiation under matter-induced supertranslations

Matter fields are supertranslated upon crossing a shock wave, which leads to entanglement of the quantum vacuum between the two regions on either side of the shock wave. We probe this entanglement for a scalar field in a planar shock wave background by computing the Bogoliubov transformation between the inertial and uniformly accelerated observer. The resulting Bogoliubov coefficients are shown to reproduce the standard Unruh effect without dependence on the form factor of the shock wave. In contrast, excited states lead to observables that depend upon the form factor. In the context of nonspherical gravitational collapse, we comment that the angular dependence of the limiting advanced time leads to similar supertranslation effects that do not affect the Hawking spectrum but do affect scattering amplitudes.

Warped Black Holes in Lower-Spin Gravity

We provide a simple holographic description for a warped conformal field theory (WCFT) at finite temperature. To this end we study the counterpart of warped anti-de Sitter black holes in three dimensions using a lower-spin $\mathfrak{sl}(2,\mathbb{R})\oplus\mathfrak{u}(1)$ Chern-Simons theory proposed by Hofman and Rollier. We determine the asymptotic symmetries, thermal entropy and holographic entanglement entropy and show that all these quantities are in perfect agreement with the expectations from the dual WCFT perspective. In addition we provide a metric interpretation of our results which naturally fits with our analysis in the Chern-Simons formulation.

Higher Spins Without (Anti-)de Sitter

Can the holographic principle be extended beyond the well known AdS/CFT correspondence? During the last couple of years there has been a substantial amount of research trying to find answers for this question. In this work we provide a review of recent developments of three-dimensional theories of gravity with higher-spin symmetries. We focus in particular on a proposed holographic duality involving asymptotically flat spacetimes and higher spin extended $\mathfrak{bms}_3$ symmetries. In addition we also discuss developments concerning relativistic and nonrelativistic higher spin algebras. As a special case Carroll gravity will be discussed in detail.

Canonical Charges in Flatland

In this series of lectures we give an introduction to the concept of asymptotic symmetry analysis with a focus on asymptotically flat spacetimes in 2+1 dimensions. We explain general ideas of quantizing gauge theories and then apply these ideas to gravity both in the metric as well as the Chern-Simons formulations. This enables one to compute the asymptotic symmetries of given gravitational configurations that in turn act as the basic underlying symmetries of a possible dual quantum field theory in the context of holography. We also briefly elaborate on the concept of "soft hair" excitations of black holes in this context.

Spectral Flow in 3D Flat Spacetimes

In this paper we investigate spectral flow symmetry in asymptotically flat spacetimes both from a gravity as well as a putative dual quantum field theory perspective. On the gravity side we consider models in Einstein gravity and supergravity as well as their "reloaded" versions, present suitable boundary conditions, determine the respective asymptotic symmetry algebras and the thermal entropy of cosmological solutions in each of these models. On the quantum field theory side we identify the spectral flow symmetry as automorphisms of the underlying symmetry algebra of the theory. Using spectral flow invariance we then determine the thermal entropy of these quantum field theories and find perfect agreement with the results from the gravity side. In addition we determine logarithmic corrections to the thermal entropy.

Most general flat space boundary conditions in three-dimensional Einstein gravity

We consider the most general asymptotically flat boundary conditions in three-dimensional Einstein gravity in the sense that we allow for the maximal number of independent free functions in the metric, leading to six towers of boundary charges and six associated chemical potentials. We find as associated asymptotic symmetry algebra an isl(2)_k current algebra. Restricting the charges and chemical potentials in various ways recovers previous cases, such as BMS_3, Heisenberg or Detournay-Riegler, all of which can be obtained as contractions of corresponding AdS_3 constructions. Finally, we show that a flat space contraction can induce an additional Carrollian contraction. As examples we provide two novel sets of boundary conditions for Carroll gravity.
