Generalized Signal Alignment For MIMO Two-Way X Relay Channels

We study the degrees of freedom (DoF) of MIMO two-way X relay channels. Previous work studied the case $N < 2M$, where $N$ and $M$ denote the number of antennas at the relay and each source, respectively, and showed that the maximum DoF of $2N$ is achievable when $N \leq \lfloor\frac{8M}{5}\rfloor$ by applying signal alignment (SA) for network coding and interference cancelation. This work considers the case $N>2M$ where the performance is limited by the number of antennas at each source node and conventional SA is not feasible. We propose a \textit{generalized signal alignment} (GSA) based transmission scheme. The key is to let the signals to be exchanged between every source node align in a transformed subspace, rather than the direct subspace, at the relay so as to form network-coded signals. This is realized by jointly designing the precoding matrices at all source nodes and the processing matrix at the relay. Moreover, the aligned subspaces are orthogonal to each other. By applying the GSA, we show that the DoF upper bound $4M$ is achievable when $M \leq \lfloor\frac{2N}{5}\rfloor$ ($M$ is even) or $M \leq \lfloor\frac{2N-1}{5}\rfloor$ ($M$ is odd). Numerical results also demonstrate that our proposed transmission scheme is feasible and effective.

Secure Beamforming for MIMO Two-Way Communications with an Untrusted Relay

This paper studies the secure beamforming design in a multiple-antenna three-node system where two source nodes exchange messages with the help of an untrusted relay node. The relay acts as both an essential signal forwarder and a potential eavesdropper. Both two-phase and three-phase two-way relay strategies are considered. Our goal is to jointly optimize the source and relay beamformers for maximizing the secrecy sum rate of the two-way communications. We first derive the optimal relay beamformer structures. Then, iterative algorithms are proposed to find source and relay beamformers jointly based on alternating optimization. Furthermore, we conduct asymptotic analysis on the maximum secrecy sum-rate. Our analysis shows that when all transmit powers approach infinity, the two-phase two-way relay scheme achieves the maximum secrecy sum rate if the source beamformers are designed such that the received signals at the relay align in the same direction. This reveals an important advantage of signal alignment technique in against eavesdropping. It is also shown that if the source powers approach zero the three-phase scheme performs the best while the two-phase scheme is even worse than direct transmission. Simulation results have verified the efficiency of the secure beamforming algorithms as well as the analytical findings.

Channel Estimation, Carrier Recovery, and Data Detection in the Presence of Phase Noise in OFDM Relay Systems

Due to its time-varying nature, oscillator phase noise can significantly degrade the performance of channel estimation, carrier recovery, and data detection blocks in high-speed wireless communication systems. In this paper, we analyze joint channel, \emph{carrier frequency offset (CFO)}, and phase noise estimation plus data detection in \emph{orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)} relay systems. To achieve this goal, a detailed transmission framework involving both training and data symbols is presented. In the data transmission phase, a comb-type OFDM symbol consisting of both pilots and data symbols is proposed to track phase noise over an OFDM frame. Next, a novel algorithm that applies the training symbols to jointly estimate the channel responses, CFO, and phase noise based on the maximum a posteriori criterion is proposed. Additionally, a new \emph{hybrid Cramér-Rao lower bound} for evaluating the performance of channel estimation and carrier recovery algorithms in OFDM relay networks is derived. Finally, an iterative receiver for joint phase noise estimation and data detection at the destination node is derived. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the application of the proposed estimation and receiver blocks significantly improves the performance of OFDM relay networks in the presence of phase noise.

Power Efficiency for Device-to-Device Communications

The concept of device-to-Device (D2D) communication as an underlay coexistence with cellular networks gains many advantages of improving system performance. In this paper, we model such a two-layer heterogenous network based on stochastic geometry approach. We aim at minimizing the expected power consumption of the D2D layer while satisfying the outage performance of both D2D layer and cellular layer. We consider two kinds of power control schemes. The first one is referred as to independent power control where the transmit powers are statistically independent of the networks and all channel conditions. The second is named as dependent power control where the transmit power of each user is dependent on its own channel condition. A closed-form expression of optimal independent power control is derived, and we point out that the optimal power control for this case is fixed and not relevant to the randomness of the network. For the dependent power control case, we propose an efficient way to find the close-to-optimal solution for the power-efficiency optimization problem. Numerical results show that dependent power control scheme saves about half of power that the independent power control scheme demands.

Alternative Awaiting and Broadcast for Two-Way Relay Fading Channels

We investigate a two-way relay (TWR) fading channel where two source nodes wish to exchange information with the help of a relay node. Given traditional TWR protocols, transmission rates in both directions are known to be limited by the hop with lower capacity, i.e., the min operations between uplink and downlink. In this paper, we propose a new transmission protocol, named as alternative awaiting and broadcast (AAB), to cancel the min operations in the TWR fading channels. The operational principles, new upper bound on ergodic sum-capacity (ESC) and convergence behavior of average delay of signal transmission (ST) (in relay buffer) for the proposed AAB protocol are analyzed. Moreover, we propose a suboptimal encoding/decoding solution for the AAB protocol and derive an achievable ergodic sum-rate (ESR) with corresponding average delay of ST. Numerical results show that 1) the proposed AAB protocol significantly improves the achievable ESR compared to the traditional TWR protocols, 2) considering the average delay of system service (SS) (in source buffer), the average delay of ST induced by the proposed AAB protocol is very small and negligible.

QoS-Aware Transmission Policies for OFDM Bidirectional Decode-and-Forward Relaying

Two-way relaying can considerably improve spectral efficiency in relay-assisted bidirectional communications. However, the benefits and flexible structure of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based two-way decode-and-forward (DF) relay systems is much less exploited. Moreover, most of existing works have not considered quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning for two-way relaying. In this paper, we consider the OFDM-based bidirectional transmission where a pair of users exchange information with or without the assistance of a single DF relay. Each user can communicate with the other via three transmission modes: direct transmission, one-way relaying, and two-way relaying. We jointly optimize the transmission policies, including power allocation, transmission mode selection, and subcarrier assignment for maximizing the weighted sum rates of the two users with diverse quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees. We formulate the joint optimization problem as a mixed integer programming problem. By using the dual method, we efficiently solve the problem in an asymptotically optimal manner. Moreover, we derive the capacity region of two-way DF relaying in parallel channels. Simulation results show that the proposed resource-allocation scheme can substantially improve system performance compared with the conventional schemes. A number of interesting insights are also provided via comprehensive simulations.

Degrees of Freedom for MIMO Two-Way X Relay Channel

We study the degrees of freedom (DOF) of a multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) two-way X relay channel, where there are two groups of source nodes and one relay node, each equipped with multiple antennas, and each of the two source nodes in one group exchanges independent messages with the two source nodes in the other group via the relay node. It is assumed that every source node is equipped with M antennas while the relay is equipped with N antennas. We first show that the upper bound on the total DOF for this network is 2min{2M,N} and then focus on the case of N \leq 2M so that the DOF is upper bounded by the number of antennas at the relay. By applying signal alignment for network coding and joint transceiver design for interference cancellation, we show that this upper bound can be achieved when N \leq8M/5. We also show that with signal alignment only but no joint transceiver design, the upper bound is achievable when N\leq4M/3. Simulation results are provided to corroborate the theoretical results and to demonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme in the finite signal-to-noise ratio regime.

Coordinated Multicast Beamforming in Multicell Networks

We study physical layer multicasting in multicell networks where each base station, equipped with multiple antennas, transmits a common message using a single beamformer to multiple users in the same cell. We investigate two coordinated beamforming designs: the quality-of-service (QoS) beamforming and the max-min SINR (signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio) beamforming. The goal of the QoS beamforming is to minimize the total power consumption while guaranteeing that received SINR at each user is above a predetermined threshold. We present a necessary condition for the optimization problem to be feasible. Then, based on the decomposition theory, we propose a novel decentralized algorithm to implement the coordinated beamforming with limited information sharing among different base stations. The algorithm is guaranteed to converge and in most cases it converges to the optimal solution. The max-min SINR (MMS) beamforming is to maximize the minimum received SINR among all users under per-base station power constraints. We show that the MMS problem and a weighted peak-power minimization (WPPM) problem are inverse problems. Based on this inversion relationship, we then propose an efficient algorithm to solve the MMS problem in an approximate manner. Simulation results demonstrate significant advantages of the proposed multicast beamforming algorithms over conventional multicasting schemes.

Robust Beamforming for Wireless Information and Power Transmission

In this letter, we study the robust beamforming problem for the multi-antenna wireless broadcasting system with simultaneous information and power transmission, under the assumption of imperfect channel state information (CSI) at the transmitter. Following the worst-case deterministic model, our objective is to maximize the worst-case harvested energy for the energy receiver while guaranteeing that the rate for the information receiver is above a threshold for all possible channel realizations. Such problem is nonconvex with infinite number of constraints. Using certain transformation techniques, we convert this problem into a relaxed semidefinite programming problem (SDP) which can be solved efficiently. We further show that the solution of the relaxed SDP problem is always rank-one. This indicates that the relaxation is tight and we can get the optimal solution for the original problem. Simulation results are presented to validate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm.

Optimal Linear Transceiver Designs for Cognitive Two-Way Relay Networks

This paper studies a cooperative cognitive radio network where two primary users (PUs) exchange information with the help of a secondary user (SU) that is equipped with multiple antennas and in return, the SU superimposes its own messages along with the primary transmission. The fundamental problem in the considered network is the design of transmission strategies at the secondary node. It involves three basic elements: first, how to split the power for relaying the primary signals and for transmitting the secondary signals; second, what two-way relay strategy should be used to assist the bidirectional communication between the two PUs; third, how to jointly design the primary and secondary transmit precoders. This work aims to address this problem by proposing a transmission framework of maximizing the achievable rate of the SU while maintaining the rate requirements of the two PUs. Three well-known and practical two-way relay strategies are considered: amplify-and-forward (AF), bit level XOR based decode-and-forward (DF-XOR) and symbol level superposition coding based DF (DF-SUP). For each relay strategy, although the design problem is non-convex, we find the optimal solution by using certain transformation techniques and optimization tools such as semidefinite programming (SDP) and second-order cone programming (SOCP). Closed-form solutions are also obtained under certain conditions. Simulation results show that when the rate requirements of the two PUs are symmetric, by using the DF-XOR strategy and applying the proposed optimal precoding, the SU requires the least power for relaying and thus reserves the most power to transmit its own signal. In the asymmetric scenario, on the other hand, the DF-SUP strategy with the corresponding optimal precoding is the best.

An Auction Approach to Distributed Power Allocation for Multiuser Cooperative Networks

This paper studies a wireless network where multiple users cooperate with each other to improve the overall network performance. Our goal is to design an optimal distributed power allocation algorithm that enables user cooperation, in particular, to guide each user on the decision of transmission mode selection and relay selection. Our algorithm has the nice interpretation of an auction mechanism with multiple auctioneers and multiple bidders. Specifically, in our proposed framework, each user acts as both an auctioneer (seller) and a bidder (buyer). Each auctioneer determines its trading price and allocates power to bidders, and each bidder chooses the demand from each auctioneer. By following the proposed distributed algorithm, each user determines how much power to reserve for its own transmission, how much power to purchase from other users, and how much power to contribute for relaying the signals of others. We derive the optimal bidding and pricing strategies that maximize the weighted sum rates of the users. Extensive simulations are carried out to verify our proposed approach.

Linear Precoding Designs for Amplify-and-Forward Multiuser Two-Way Relay Systems

Two-way relaying can improve spectral efficiency in two-user cooperative communications. It also has great potential in multiuser systems. A major problem of designing a multiuser two-way relay system (MU-TWRS) is transceiver or precoding design to suppress co-channel interference. This paper aims to study linear precoding designs for a cellular MU-TWRS where a multi-antenna base station (BS) conducts bi-directional communications with multiple mobile stations (MSs) via a multi-antenna relay station (RS) with amplify-and-forward relay strategy. The design goal is to optimize uplink performance, including total mean-square error (Total-MSE) and sum rate, while maintaining individual signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio (SINR) requirement for downlink signals. We show that the BS precoding design with the RS precoder fixed can be converted to a standard second order cone programming (SOCP) and the optimal solution is obtained efficiently. The RS precoding design with the BS precoder fixed, on the other hand, is non-convex and we present an iterative algorithm to find a local optimal solution. Then, the joint BS-RS precoding is obtained by solving the BS precoding and the RS precoding alternately. Comprehensive simulation is conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed precoding designs.

Spectrum Leasing and Cooperative Resource Allocation in Cognitive OFDMA Networks

This paper considers a cooperative OFDMA-based cognitive radio network where the primary system leases some of its subchannels to the secondary system for a fraction of time in exchange for the secondary users (SUs) assisting the transmission of primary users (PUs) as relays. Our aim is to determine the cooperation strategies among the primary and secondary systems so as to maximize the sum-rate of SUs while maintaining quality-of-service (QoS) requirements of PUs. We formulate a joint optimization problem of PU transmission mode selection, SU (or relay) selection, subcarrier assignment, power control, and time allocation. By applying dual method, this mixed integer programming problem is decomposed into parallel per-subcarrier subproblems, with each determining the cooperation strategy between one PU and one SU. We show that, on each leased subcarrier, the optimal strategy is to let a SU exclusively act as a relay or transmit for itself. This result is fundamentally different from the conventional spectrum leasing in single-channel systems where a SU must transmit a fraction of time for itself if it helps the PU's transmission. We then propose a subgradient-based algorithm to find the asymptotically optimal solution to the primal problem in polynomial time. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can significantly enhance the network performance.

Cross-Layer Optimization of Two-Way Relaying for Statistical QoS Guarantees

Two-way relaying promises considerable improvements on spectral efficiency in wireless relay networks. While most existing works focus on physical layer approaches to exploit its capacity gain, the benefits of two-way relaying on upper layers are much less investigated. In this paper, we study the cross-layer design and optimization for delay quality-of-service (QoS) provisioning in two-way relay systems. Our goal is to find the optimal transmission policy to maximize the weighted sum throughput of the two users in the physical layer while guaranteeing the individual statistical delay-QoS requirement for each user in the datalink layer. This statistical delay-QoS requirement is characterized by the QoS exponent. By integrating the concept of effective capacity, the cross-layer optimization problem is equivalent to a weighted sum effective capacity maximization problem. We derive the jointly optimal power and rate adaptation policies for both three-phase and two-phase two-way relay protocols. Numerical results show that the proposed adaptive transmission policies can efficiently provide QoS guarantees and improve the performance. In addition, the throughput gain obtained by the considered three-phase and two-phase protocols over direct transmission is significant when the delay-QoS requirements are loose, but the gain diminishes at tight delay requirements. It is also found that, in the two-phase protocol, the relay node should be placed closer to the source with more stringent delay requirement.

Relay Placement for Physical Layer Security: A Secure Connection Perspective

This work studies the problem of secure connection in cooperative wireless communication with two relay strategies, decode-and-forward (DF) and randomize-and-forward (RF). The four-node scenario and cellular scenario are considered. For the typical four-node (source, destination, relay, and eavesdropper) scenario, we derive the optimal power allocation for the DF strategy and find that the RF strategy is always better than the DF to enhance secure connection. In cellular networks, we show that without relay, it is difficult to establish secure connections from the base station to the cell edge users. The effect of relay placement for the cell edge users is demonstrated by simulation. For both scenarios, we find that the benefit of relay transmission increases when path loss becomes severer.

Pairwise Check Decoding for LDPC Coded Two-Way Relay Block Fading Channels

Partial decoding has the potential to achieve a larger capacity region than full decoding in two-way relay (TWR) channels. Existing partial decoding realizations are however designed for Gaussian channels and with a static physical layer network coding (PLNC). In this paper, we propose a new solution for joint network coding and channel decoding at the relay, called pairwise check decoding (PCD), for low-density parity-check (LDPC) coded TWR system over block fading channels. The main idea is to form a check relationship table (check-relation-tab) for the superimposed LDPC coded packet pair in the multiple access (MA) phase in conjunction with an adaptive PLNC mapping in the broadcast (BC) phase. Using PCD, we then present a partial decoding method, two-stage closest-neighbor clustering with PCD (TS-CNC-PCD), with the aim of minimizing the worst pairwise error probability. Moreover, we propose the minimum correlation optimization (MCO) for selecting the better check-relation-tabs. Simulation results confirm that the proposed TS-CNC-PCD offers a sizable gain over the conventional XOR with belief propagation (BP) in fading channels.

Alternative Awaiting and Broadcast for Two-Way Relay Fading Channels

We investigate a two-way relay (TWR) fading channel based on store-and-forward (SF), where two source nodes wish to exchange information with the help of a relay node. A new upper bound on the ergodic sum-capacity for the TWR fading system is derived when delay tends to infinity. We further propose two alternative awaiting and broadcast (AAB) schemes: pure partial decoding (PPD) with SF-I and combinatorial decoding (CBD) with SF-II, which approach the new upper bound at high SNR with unbounded and bounded delay respectively. Numerical results show that the proposed AAB schemes significantly outperform the traditional physical layer network coding (PLNC) methods without delay. Compared to the traditional TWR schemes without delay, the proposed CBD with SF-II method significantly improves the maximum sum-rate with an average delay of only some dozen seconds in the relay buffer.

Resource Allocation with Subcarrier Pairing in OFDMA Two-Way Relay Networks

This study considers an orthogonal frequency-division multiple-access (OFDMA)-based multi-user two-way relay network where multiple mobile stations (MSs) communicate with a common base station (BS) via multiple relay stations (RSs). We study the joint optimization problem of subcarrier-pairing based relay-power allocation, relay selection, and subcarrier assignment. The problem is formulated as a mixed integer programming problem. By using the dual method, we propose an efficient algorithm to solve the problem in an asymptotically optimal manner. Simulation results show that the proposed method can improve system performance significantly over the conventional methods.
