Real-Time Summarization of Twitter

In this paper, we describe our approaches to TREC Real-Time Summarization of Twitter. We focus on real time push notification scenario, which requires a system monitors the stream of sampled tweets and returns the tweets relevant and novel to given interest profiles. Dirichlet score with and with very little smoothing (baseline) are employed to classify whether a tweet is relevant to a given interest profile. Using metrics including Mean Average Precision (MAP, cumulative gain (CG) and discount cumulative gain (DCG), the experiment indicates that our approach has a good performance. It is also desired to remove the redundant tweets from the pushing queue. Due to the precision limit, we only describe the algorithm in this paper.

MCUBERT: Memory-Efficient BERT Inference on Commodity Microcontrollers

In this paper, we propose MCUBERT to enable language models like BERT on tiny microcontroller units (MCUs) through network and scheduling co-optimization. We observe the embedding table contributes to the major storage bottleneck for tiny BERT models. Hence, at the network level, we propose an MCU-aware two-stage neural architecture search algorithm based on clustered low-rank approximation for embedding compression. To reduce the inference memory requirements, we further propose a novel fine-grained MCU-friendly scheduling strategy. Through careful computation tiling and re-ordering as well as kernel design, we drastically increase the input sequence lengths supported on MCUs without any latency or accuracy penalty. MCUBERT reduces the parameter size of BERT-tiny and BERT-mini by 5.7$\times$ and 3.0$\times$ and the execution memory by 3.5$\times$ and 4.3$\times$, respectively. MCUBERT also achieves 1.5$\times$ latency reduction. For the first time, MCUBERT enables lightweight BERT models on commodity MCUs and processing more than 512 tokens with less than 256KB of memory.

Cardiac Copilot: Automatic Probe Guidance for Echocardiography with World Model

Echocardiography is the only technique capable of real-time imaging of the heart and is vital for diagnosing the majority of cardiac diseases. However, there is a severe shortage of experienced cardiac sonographers, due to the heart's complex structure and significant operational challenges. To mitigate this situation, we present a Cardiac Copilot system capable of providing real-time probe movement guidance to assist less experienced sonographers in conducting freehand echocardiography. This system can enable non-experts, especially in primary departments and medically underserved areas, to perform cardiac ultrasound examinations, potentially improving global healthcare delivery. The core innovation lies in proposing a data-driven world model, named Cardiac Dreamer, for representing cardiac spatial structures. This world model can provide structure features of any cardiac planes around the current probe position in the latent space, serving as an precise navigation map for autonomous plane localization. We train our model with real-world ultrasound data and corresponding probe motion from 110 routine clinical scans with 151K sample pairs by three certified sonographers. Evaluations on three standard planes with 37K sample pairs demonstrate that the world model can reduce navigation errors by up to 33\% and exhibit more stable performance.

Reactor neutrino liquid xenon coherent elastic scattering experiment

Coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering (CEvNS) provides a unique probe for neutrino properties Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) physics. REactor neutrino LIquid xenon Coherent Scattering experiment (RELICS), a proposed reactor neutrino program using liquid xenon time projection chamber (LXeTPC) technology, aims to investigate the CEvNS process of antineutrinos off xenon atomic nuclei. In this work, the design of the experiment is studied and optimized based on Monte Carlo (MC) simulations. To achieve a sufficiently low energy threshold for CEvNS detection, an ionization-only analysis channel is adopted for RELICS. A high emission rate of delayed electrons after a big ionization signal is the major background, leading to an analysis threshold of 120 photo-electrons in the CEvNS search. The second largest background, nuclear recoils induced by cosmic-ray neutrons, is suppressed via a passive water shield. The physics potential of RELICS is explored with a 32 kg*yr exposure at a baseline of 25 m from a reactor core with a 3 GW thermal power. In an energy range of 120 to 300 PE, corresponding to an average nuclear recoil from 0.63 to 1.36 keV considering the liquid xenon response and detector-related effect, we expect 4639.7 CEvNS and 1687.8 background events. The sensitivity of RELICS to the weak mixing angle is investigated at a low momentum transfer. Our study shows that RELICS can further improve the constraints on the non-standard neutrino interaction (NSI) compared to the current best results.

Trinity: A General Purpose FHE Accelerator

In this paper, we present the first multi-modal FHE accelerator based on a unified architecture, which efficiently supports CKKS, TFHE, and their conversion scheme within a single accelerator. To achieve this goal, we first analyze the theoretical foundations of the aforementioned schemes and highlight their composition from a finite number of arithmetic kernels. Then, we investigate the challenges for efficiently supporting these kernels within a unified architecture, which include 1) concurrent support for NTT and FFT, 2) maintaining high hardware utilization across various polynomial lengths, and 3) ensuring consistent performance across diverse arithmetic kernels. To tackle these challenges, we propose a novel FHE accelerator named Trinity, which incorporates algorithm optimizations, hardware component reuse, and dynamic workload scheduling to enhance the acceleration of CKKS, TFHE, and their conversion scheme. By adaptive select the proper allocation of components for NTT and MAC, Trinity maintains high utilization across NTTs with various polynomial lengths and imbalanced arithmetic workloads. The experiment results show that, for the pure CKKS and TFHE workloads, the performance of our Trinity outperforms the state-of-the-art accelerator for CKKS (SHARP) and TFHE (Morphling) by 1.49x and 4.23x, respectively. Moreover, Trinity achieves 919.3x performance improvement for the FHE-conversion scheme over the CPU-based implementation. Notably, despite the performance improvement, the hardware overhead of Trinity is only 85% of the summed circuit areas of SHARP and Morphling.

Unified Framework for Histopathology Image Augmentation and Classification via Generative Models

Deep learning techniques have become widely utilized in histopathology image classification due to their superior performance. However, this success heavily relies on the availability of substantial labeled data, which necessitates extensive and costly manual annotation by domain experts. To address this challenge, researchers have recently employed generative models to synthesize data for augmentation, thereby enhancing classification model performance. Traditionally, this involves generating synthetic data first and then training the classification model with both synthetic and real data, which creates a two-stage, time-consuming workflow. To overcome this limitation, we propose an innovative unified framework that integrates the data generation and model training stages into a unified process. Our approach utilizes a pure Vision Transformer (ViT)-based conditional Generative Adversarial Network (cGAN) model to simultaneously handle both image synthesis and classification. An additional classification head is incorporated into the cGAN model to enable simultaneous classification of histopathology images. To improve training stability and enhance the quality of generated data, we introduce a conditional class projection technique that helps maintain class separation during the generation process. We also employ a dynamic multi-loss weighting mechanism to effectively balance the losses of the classification tasks. Furthermore, our selective augmentation mechanism actively selects the most suitable generated images for data augmentation to further improve performance. Extensive experiments on histopathology datasets show that our unified synthetic augmentation framework consistently enhances the performance of histopathology image classification models.

PrivQuant: Communication-Efficient Private Inference with Quantized Network/Protocol Co-Optimization

Private deep neural network (DNN) inference based on secure two-party computation (2PC) enables secure privacy protection for both the server and the client. However, existing secure 2PC frameworks suffer from a high inference latency due to enormous communication. As the communication of both linear and non-linear DNN layers reduces with the bit widths of weight and activation, in this paper, we propose PrivQuant, a framework that jointly optimizes the 2PC-based quantized inference protocols and the network quantization algorithm, enabling communication-efficient private inference. PrivQuant proposes DNN architecture-aware optimizations for the 2PC protocols for communication-intensive quantized operators and conducts graph-level operator fusion for communication reduction. Moreover, PrivQuant also develops a communication-aware mixed precision quantization algorithm to improve inference efficiency while maintaining high accuracy. The network/protocol co-optimization enables PrivQuant to outperform prior-art 2PC frameworks. With extensive experiments, we demonstrate PrivQuant reduces communication by $11\times, 2.5\times \mathrm{and}~ 2.8\times$, which results in $8.7\times, 1.8\times ~ \mathrm{and}~ 2.4\times$ latency reduction compared with SiRNN, COINN, and CoPriv, respectively.

Quantum Walk Search on Complete Multipartite Graph with Multiple Marked Vertices

Quantum walk is a potent technique for building quantum algorithms. This paper examines the quantum walk search algorithm on complete multipartite graphs with multiple marked vertices, which has not been explored before. Two specific cases of complete multipartite graphs are probed in this paper, and in both cases, each set consists of an equal number of vertices. We employ the coined quantum walk model and achieve quadratic speedup with a constant probability of finding a marked vertex. Furthermore, we investigate the robust quantum walk of two cases and demonstrate that even with an unknown number of marked vertices, it is still possible to achieve a quadratic speedup compared to classical algorithms and the success probability oscillates within a small range close to 1. This work addresses the overcooking problem in quantum walk search algorithms on some complete multipartite graphs. We also provide the numerical simulation and circuit implementation of our quantum algorithm.

Evaluating Readability and Faithfulness of Concept-based Explanations

With the growing popularity of general-purpose Large Language Models (LLMs), comes a need for more global explanations of model behaviors. Concept-based explanations arise as a promising avenue for explaining high-level patterns learned by LLMs. Yet their evaluation poses unique challenges, especially due to their non-local nature and high dimensional representation in a model's hidden space. Current methods approach concepts from different perspectives, lacking a unified formalization. This makes evaluating the core measures of concepts, namely faithfulness or readability, challenging. To bridge the gap, we introduce a formal definition of concepts generalizing to diverse concept-based explanations' settings. Based on this, we quantify the faithfulness of a concept explanation via perturbation. We ensure adequate perturbation in the high-dimensional space for different concepts via an optimization problem. Readability is approximated via an automatic and deterministic measure, quantifying the coherence of patterns that maximally activate a concept while aligning with human understanding. Finally, based on measurement theory, we apply a meta-evaluation method for evaluating these measures, generalizable to other types of explanations or tasks as well. Extensive experimental analysis has been conducted to inform the selection of explanation evaluation measures.

Ranking Perspective for Tree-based Methods with Applications to Symbolic Feature Selection

Tree-based methods are powerful nonparametric techniques in statistics and machine learning. However, their effectiveness, particularly in finite-sample settings, is not fully understood. Recent applications have revealed their surprising ability to distinguish transformations (which we call symbolic feature selection) that remain obscure under current theoretical understanding. This work provides a finite-sample analysis of tree-based methods from a ranking perspective. We link oracle partitions in tree methods to response rankings at local splits, offering new insights into their finite-sample behavior in regression and feature selection tasks. Building on this local ranking perspective, we extend our analysis in two ways: (i) We examine the global ranking performance of individual trees and ensembles, including Classification and Regression Trees (CART) and Bayesian Additive Regression Trees (BART), providing finite-sample oracle bounds, ranking consistency, and posterior contraction results. (ii) Inspired by the ranking perspective, we propose concordant divergence statistics $\mathcal{T}_0$ to evaluate symbolic feature mappings and establish their properties. Numerical experiments demonstrate the competitive performance of these statistics in symbolic feature selection tasks compared to existing methods.

CamLoPA: A Hidden Wireless Camera Localization Framework via Signal Propagation Path Analysis

Hidden wireless cameras pose significant privacy threats, necessitating effective detection and localization methods. However, existing solutions often require spacious activity areas, expensive specialized devices, or pre-collected training data, limiting their practical deployment. To address these limitations, we introduce CamLoPA, a training-free wireless camera detection and localization framework that operates with minimal activity space constraints using low-cost commercial-off-the-shelf (COTS) devices. CamLoPA can achieve detection and localization in just 45 seconds of user activities with a Raspberry Pi board. During this short period, it analyzes the causal relationship between the wireless traffic and user movement to detect the presence of a snooping camera. Upon detection, CamLoPA employs a novel azimuth location model based on wireless signal propagation path analysis. Specifically, this model leverages the time ratio of user paths crossing the First Fresnel Zone (FFZ) to determine the azimuth angle of the camera. Then CamLoPA refines the localization by identifying the camera's quadrant. We evaluate CamLoPA across various devices and environments, demonstrating that it achieves 95.37% snooping camera detection accuracy and an average localization error of 17.23, under the significantly reduced activity space requirements. VascularPilot3D: Toward a 3D fully autonomous navigation for endovascular robotics

This research reports VascularPilot3D, the first 3D fully autonomous endovascular robot navigation system. As an exploration toward autonomous guidewire navigation, VascularPilot3D is developed as a complete navigation system based on intra-operative imaging systems (fluoroscopic X-ray in this study) and typical endovascular robots. VascularPilot3D adopts previously researched fast 3D-2D vessel registration algorithms and guidewire segmentation methods as its perception modules. We additionally propose three modules: a topology-constrained 2D-3D instrument end-point lifting method, a tree-based fast path planning algorithm, and a prior-free endovascular navigation strategy. VascularPilot3D is compatible with most mainstream endovascular robots. Ex-vivo experiments validate that VascularPilot3D achieves 100% success rate among 25 trials. It reduces the human surgeon's overall control loops by 18.38%. VascularPilot3D is promising for general clinical autonomous endovascular navigations.

AdapMoE: Adaptive Sensitivity-based Expert Gating and Management for Efficient MoE Inference

Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) models are designed to enhance the efficiency of large language models (LLMs) without proportionally increasing the computational demands. However, their deployment on edge devices still faces significant challenges due to high on-demand loading overheads from managing sparsely activated experts. This paper introduces AdapMoE, an algorithm-system co-design framework for efficient MoE inference. AdapMoE features adaptive expert gating and management to reduce the on-demand loading overheads. We observe the heterogeneity of experts loading across layers and tokens, based on which we propose a sensitivity-based strategy to adjust the number of activated experts dynamically. Meanwhile, we also integrate advanced prefetching and cache management techniques to further reduce the loading latency. Through comprehensive evaluations on various platforms, we demonstrate AdapMoE consistently outperforms existing techniques, reducing the average number of activated experts by 25% and achieving a 1.35x speedup without accuracy degradation. Mixture-of-Supernets: Improving Weight-Sharing Supernet Training with Architecture-Routed Mixture-of-Experts

Weight-sharing supernets are crucial for performance estimation in cutting-edge neural architecture search (NAS) frameworks. Despite their ability to generate diverse subnetworks without retraining, the quality of these subnetworks is not guaranteed due to weight sharing. In NLP tasks like machine translation and pre-trained language modeling, there is a significant performance gap between supernet and training from scratch for the same model architecture, necessitating retraining post optimal architecture identification. This study introduces a solution called mixture-of-supernets, a generalized supernet formulation leveraging mixture-of-experts (MoE) to enhance supernet model expressiveness with minimal training overhead. Unlike conventional supernets, this method employs an architecture-based routing mechanism, enabling indirect sharing of model weights among subnetworks. This customization of weights for specific architectures, learned through gradient descent, minimizes retraining time, significantly enhancing training efficiency in NLP. The proposed method attains state-of-the-art (SoTA) performance in NAS for fast machine translation models, exhibiting a superior latency-BLEU tradeoff compared to HAT, the SoTA NAS framework for machine translation. Furthermore, it excels in NAS for building memory-efficient task-agnostic BERT models, surpassing NAS-BERT and AutoDistil across various model sizes. HG-PIPE: Vision Transformer Acceleration with Hybrid-Grained Pipeline

Vision Transformer (ViT) acceleration with field programmable gate array (FPGA) is promising but challenging. Existing FPGA-based ViT accelerators mainly rely on temporal architectures, which process different operators by reusing the same hardware blocks and suffer from extensive memory access overhead. Pipelined architectures, either coarse-grained or fine-grained, unroll the ViT computation spatially for memory access efficiency. However, they usually suffer from significant hardware resource constraints and pipeline bubbles induced by the global computation dependency of ViT. In this paper, we introduce HG-PIPE, a pipelined FPGA accelerator for high-throughput and low-latency ViT processing. HG-PIPE features a hybrid-grained pipeline architecture to reduce on-chip buffer cost and couples the computation dataflow and parallelism design to eliminate the pipeline bubbles. HG-PIPE further introduces careful approximations to implement both linear and non-linear operators with abundant Lookup Tables (LUTs), thus alleviating resource constraints. On a ZCU102 FPGA, HG-PIPE achieves 2.78 times better throughput and 2.52 times better resource efficiency than the prior-art accelerators, e.g., AutoViTAcc. With a VCK190 FPGA, HG-PIPE realizes end-to-end ViT acceleration on a single device and achieves 7118 images/s, which is 2.81 times faster than a V100 GPU.

Structure-aware World Model for Probe Guidance via Large-scale Self-supervised Pre-train

The complex structure of the heart leads to significant challenges in echocardiography, especially in acquisition cardiac ultrasound images. Successful echocardiography requires a thorough understanding of the structures on the two-dimensional plane and the spatial relationships between planes in three-dimensional space. In this paper, we innovatively propose a large-scale self-supervised pre-training method to acquire a cardiac structure-aware world model. The core innovation lies in constructing a self-supervised task that requires structural inference by predicting masked structures on a 2D plane and imagining another plane based on pose transformation in 3D space. To support large-scale pre-training, we collected over 1.36 million echocardiograms from ten standard views, along with their 3D spatial poses. In the downstream probe guidance task, we demonstrate that our pre-trained model consistently reduces guidance errors across the ten most common standard views on the test set with 0.29 million samples from 74 routine clinical scans, indicating that structure-aware pre-training benefits the scanning.

Efficient energy-stable parametric finite element methods for surface diffusion flow and applications in solid-state dewetting

Currently existing energy-stable parametric finite element methods for surface diffusion flow and other flows are usually limited to first-order accuracy in time. Designing a high-order algorithm for geometric flows that can also be theoretically proven to be energy-stable poses a significant challenge. Motivated by the new scalar auxiliary variable approach [F.Huang, J.Shen, Z.Yang, SIAM J. SCI. Comput., 42 (2020), pp. A2514-A2536], we propose novel energy-stable parametric finite element approximations for isotropic/anisotropic surface diffusion flows, achieving both first-order and second-order accuracy in time. Additionally, we apply the algorithms to simulate the solid-state dewetting of thin films. Finally, extensive numerical experiments validate the accuracy, energy stability, and efficiency of our developed numerical methods. The designed algorithms in this work exhibit strong versatility, as they can be readily extended to other high-order time discretization methods (e.g., BDFk schemes). Meanwhile, the algorithms achieve remarkable computational efficiency and maintain excellent mesh quality. More importantly, the algorithm can be theoretically proven to possess unconditional energy stability, with the energy nearly equal to the original energy.

Energy-stable parametric finite element approximations for regularized solid-state dewetting in strongly anisotropic materials

In this work, we aim to develop energy-stable parametric finite element approximations for a sharp-interface model with strong surface energy anisotropy, which is derived from the first variation of an energy functional composed of film/vapor interfacial energy, substrate energy, and regularized Willmore energy. By introducing two geometric relations, we innovatively establish an equivalent regularized sharp-interface model and further construct an energy-stable parametric finite element algorithm for this equivalent model. We provide a detailed proof of the energy stability of the numerical scheme, addressing a gap in the relevant theory. Additionally, we develop another structure-preserving parametric finite element scheme that can preserve both area conservation and energy stability. Finally, we present several numerical simulations to show accuracy and efficiency as well as some structure-preserving properties of the proposed numerical methods. More importantly, extensive numerical simulations reveal that our schemes provide better mesh quality and are more suitable for long-term computations.
