Bayesian Detection of Image Boundaries

Detecting boundary of an image based on noisy observations is a fundamental problem of image processing and image segmentation. For a $d$-dimensional image ($d = 2, 3, \ldots$), the boundary can often be described by a closed smooth $(d - 1)$-dimensional manifold. In this paper, we propose a nonparametric Bayesian approach based on priors indexed by $\mathbb{S}^{d - 1}$, the unit sphere in $\mathbb{R}^d$. We derive optimal posterior contraction rates using Gaussian processes or finite random series priors using basis functions such as trigonometric polynomials for 2-dimensional images and spherical harmonics for 3-dimensional images. For 2-dimensional images, we show a rescaled squared exponential Gaussian process on $\mathbb{S}^1$ achieves four goals of guaranteed geometric restriction, (nearly) minimax rate optimal and adaptive to the smoothness level, convenient for joint inference and computationally efficient. We conduct an extensive study of its reproducing kernel Hilbert space, which may be of interest by its own and can also be used in other contexts. Simulations confirm excellent performance of the proposed method and indicate its robustness under model misspecification at least under the simulated settings.

Superfluid density and microwave conductivity of FeSe superconductor: ultra-long-lived quasiparticles and extended s-wave energy gap

FeSe is an iron-based superconductor of immense current interest due to the large enhancements of Tc that occur when it is pressurized or grown as a single layer on an insulating substrate. Here we report precision measurements of its superconducting electrodynamics, at frequencies of 202 and 658 MHz and at temperatures down to 0.1 K. The quasiparticle conductivity reveals a rapid collapse in scattering on entering the superconducting state that is strongly reminiscent of unconventional superconductors such as cuprates, organics and the heavy fermion material CeCoIn5. At the lowest temperatures the quasiparticle mean free path exceeds 50 micron, a record for a compound superconductor. From the superfluid response we confirm the importance of multiband superconductivity and reveal strong evidence for a finite energy-gap minimum.

Contagion processes on the static and activity driven coupling networks

The evolution of network structure and the spreading of epidemic are common coexistent dynamical processes. In most cases, network structure is treated either static or time-varying, supposing the whole network is observed in a same time window. In this paper, we consider the epidemic spreading on a network consisting of both static and time-varying structures. At meanwhile, the time-varying part and the epidemic spreading are supposed to be of the same time scale. We introduce a static and activity driven coupling (SADC) network model to characterize the coupling between static (strong) structure and dynamic (weak) structure. Epidemic thresholds of SIS and SIR model are studied on SADC both analytically and numerically with various coupling strategies, where the strong structure is of homogeneous or heterogeneous degree distribution. Theoretical thresholds obtained from SADC model can both recover and generalize the classical results in static and time-varying networks. It is demonstrated that weak structures can make the epidemics break out much more easily in homogeneous coupling but harder in heterogeneous coupling when keeping same average degree in SADC networks. Furthermore, we show there exists a threshold ratio of the weak structure to have substantive effects on the breakout of the epidemics. This promotes our understanding of why epidemics can still break out in some social networks even we restrict the flow of the population.

An efficient method for performance improvement of organometal halide perovskite solar cell via external electric field

An effective method, performed adding external electric field (EEF) on CH3NH3PbI3-xClx (OPIC) perovskite layer during the annealing process, is proposed to improve the performance of the solar cell. By harmonizing EEF direction with the hole/electron modified layer, a significant improvement on the short circuit current and fill factor is obtained. Using the simplest planar device, the largest positive EEF of 2.5*10^6 V/m makes PCE increase from 12.86 to 14.33, whose increment reaches 11.4% compared with non-EFE sample. By analyzing the best and the statistics data, a fine positive correlation between EEF and PEC is found. The physical mechanism which a displacement polarization field induced by the ionic migration enhances the built in field of the perovskite heterojunction is discussed. The study proposed a physical process in modifying the cell efficiency and provides a new evidence on current-voltage hysteresis of OPIC devices.

The combination of directional outputs and single-mode operation in circular microdisk with broken PT symmetry

Monochromaticity and directionality are two key characteristics of lasers. However, the combination of directional emission and single-mode operation is quite challenging, especially for the on-chip devices. Here we propose a microdisk laser with single-mode operation and directional emissions by exploiting the recent developments associated with parity-time (PT) symmetry. This is accomplished by introducing one-dimensional periodic gain and loss into a circular microdisk, which induces a coupling between whispering gallery modes with different radial numbers. The lowest threshold mode is selected at the positions with least initial wavelength difference. And the directional emissions are formed by the introduction of additional grating vectors by the periodic distribution of gain and loss regions. We believe this research will impact the practical applications of on-chip microdisk lasers.

Experimental demonstration of PT-symmetric stripe lasers

Recently, the coexistence of parity-time (PT) symmetric laser and absorber has gained tremendous research attention. While the PT symmetric absorber has been observed in microwave metamaterials, the experimental demonstration of PT symmetric laser is still absent. Here we experimentally study PT-symmetric laser absorber in stripe waveguide. Using the concept of PT symmetry to exploit the light amplification and absorption, PT-symmetric laser absorbers have been successfully obtained. Different from the single-mode PT symmetric lasers, the PT-symmetric stripe lasers have been experimentally confirmed by comparing the relative wavelength positions and mode spacing under different pumping conditions. When the waveguide is half pumped, the mode spacing is doubled and the lasing wavelengths shift to the center of every two initial lasing modes. All these observations are consistent with the theoretical predictions and confirm the PT-symmetry breaking well.

Inversed Vernier effect based single-mode laser emission in coupled microdisks

Recently, on-chip single-mode laser emission has attracted considerable research attention due to its wide applications. While most of single-mode lasers in coupled microdisks or microrings have been qualitatively explained by either Vernier effect or inversed Vernier effect, none of them have been experimentally confirmed. Here, we studied the mechanism for single-mode operation in coupled microdisks. We found that the mode numbers had been significantly reduced to nearly single-mode within a large pumping power range from threshold to gain saturation. The detail laser spectra showed that the largest gain and the first lasing peak were mainly generated by one disk and the laser intensity was proportional to the frequency detuning. The corresponding theoretical analysis showed that the experimental observations were dominated by internal coupling within one cavity, which was similar to the recently explored inversed Vernier effect in two coupled microrings. We believe our finding will be important for understanding the previous experimental findings and the development of on-chip single-mode laser.

Ferroelectric field effect of the bulk heterojunction in polymer solar cells

A ferroelectric field effect in the bulk heterojunction was found when an external electric field (EEF) was applied on the active layer of polymer solar cells (PSCs) during the annealing process of the active layer spin-coated with poly (3-hexylthiophene):[6,6]-phenyl-C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT:PCBM). For one direction field, the short circuit current density of PSCs was improved from 7.2 to 8.0 mA/cm2, the power conversion efficiency increased from 2.4 to 2.8%, and the incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency increased from 42 to 49% corresponding to the different EEF magnitude. For an opposite direction field, the applied EEF brought a minus effect on the performance mentioned above. EEF treatment can orientate molecular ordering of the polymer, and change the morphology of the active layer. The authors suggest a explanation that the ferroelectric field has been built in the active layer, and therefore it plays a key role in PSCs system. A needle-like surface morphology of the active film was also discussed.

Effect of electrode geometry on photovoltaic performance of polymer solar cells

This paper investigates the impact of electrode geometry on the performance of polymer solar cells (PSCs). Four types of negative electrodes with equal area (0.09 cm2) but different shape (round, oval, square, and triangular) are evaluated with respect to short-circuit current density, open-circuit voltage, fill factor, and power conversion efficiency of PSCs. The results show that the device with round electrodes gives the best photovoltaic performance; in contrast, the device with triangular electrodes reveals the worst properties. Maximum almost twice increase in PCE with round electrode is obtained in the devices compared with that of the triangular electrode. As a conclusion, the electrode boundary curvature has a strong influence on the performance of PSCs. The larger curvature, i.e. the sharper electrodes edge, maybe is a negative effector on exciton separation and carrier transport in PSC system.
