Strong Asymptotics of Planar Orthogonal Polynomials: Gaussian Weight Perturbed by Finite Number of Point Charges

We consider the planar orthogonal polynomial $p_{n}(z)$ with respect to the measure supported on the whole complex plane $${\rm e}^{-N|z|^2} \prod_{j=1}^ν|z-a_j|^{2c_j}\,{\rm d} A(z)$$ where ${\rm d} A$ is the Lebesgue measure of the plane, $N$ is a positive constant, $\{c_1,\cdots,c_ν\}$ are nonzero real numbers greater than $-1$ and $\{a_1,\cdots,a_ν\}\subset{\mathbb D}\setminus\{0\}$ are distinct points inside the unit disk. In the scaling limit when $n/N = 1$ and $n\to \infty$ we obtain the strong asymptotics of the polynomial $p_n(z)$. We show that the support of the roots converges to what we call the "multiple Szego curve," a certain connected curve having $ν+1$ components in its complement. We apply the nonlinear steepest descent method on the matrix Riemann-Hilbert problem of size $(ν+1)\times(ν+1)$.

Quantum oscillations, Magnetic breakdown and thermal Hall effect in Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$

Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is a ferromagnetic semi-metal with Weyl nodes in its band structure and a large anomalous Hall effect below its Curie temperature of 177 K. We present a detailed study of its Fermi surface and examine the relevance of the anomalous transverse Wiedemann Franz law to it. We studied Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations along two orientations in single crystals with a mobility as high as $2.7\times$10$^3$ cm$^2$V$^{-1}$s$^{-1}$ subject to a magnetic field as large as $\sim$ 60 T. The angle dependence of the frequencies is in agreement with density functional theory (DFT) calculations and reveals two types of hole pockets (H1, H2) and two types of electron pockets (E1, E2). An additional unexpected frequency emerges at high magnetic field. We attribute it to magnetic breakdown between the hole pocket H2 and the electron pocket E2, since it is close to the sum of the E2 and H2 fundamental frequencies. By measuring the anomalous thermal and electrical Hall conductivities, we quantified the anomalous transverse Lorenz ratio, which is close to the Sommerfeld ratio ($L_0=\frac{π^2}{3}\frac{k_B^2}{e^2}$) below 100 K and deviates downwards at higher temperatures. This finite temperature deviation from the anomalous Wiedemann-Franz law is a source of information on the distance between the sources and sinks of the Berry curvature and the chemical potential.

Anisotropic magnon-magnon coupling in synthetic antiferromagnets

The magnon-magnon coupling in synthetic antiferromagnets advances it as hybrid magnonic systems to explore the quantum information technologies. To induce the magnon-magnon coupling, the parity symmetry between two magnetization needs to be broken. Here we experimentally demonstrate a convenient method to break the parity symmetry by the asymmetric thickness of two magnetic layers and thus introduce a magnon-magnon coupling in Ir-based synthetic antiferromagnets CoFeB(10 nm)/Ir(tIr=0.6 nm, 1.2 nm)/CoFeB(13 nm). Remarkably, we find that the weakly uniaxial anisotropy field (~ 20 Oe) makes the magnon-magnon coupling anisotropic. The coupling strength presented by a characteristic anticrossing gap varies in the range between 0.54 GHz and 0.90 GHz for tIr =0.6 nm, and between nearly zero to 1.4 GHz for tIr = 1.2 nm, respectively. Our results demonstrate a feasible way to induce the magnon-magnon coupling by an asymmetric structure and tune the coupling strength by varying the direction of in-plane magnetic field. The magnon-magnon coupling in this highly tunable material system could open exciting perspectives for exploring quantum-mechanical coupling phenomena.

An analytical model to kinematically identify thin discs in MaNGA galaxies

We present an analytical model to identify thin discs in galaxies, and apply this model to a sample of SDSS MaNGA galaxies. This model fits the velocity and velocity dispersion fields of galaxies with regular kinematics. By introducing two parameters $ζ$ related to the comparison of the model's asymmetric drift correction to the observed gas kinematics and $η$ related to the dominant component of a galaxy, we classify the galaxies in the sample as "disc-dominated", "non-disc-dominated", or "disc-free" indicating galaxies with a dominating thin disc, a non-dominating thin disc, or no thin disc detection with our method, respectively. The dynamical mass resulting from our model correlates with stellar mass, and we investigate discrepancies by including gas mass and variation of the initial mass function. As expected, most spiral galaxies in the sample are disc-dominated, while ellipticals are predominantly disc-free. Lenticular galaxies show a dichotomy in their kinematic classification, which is related to their different star formation rates and gas fractions. We propose two possible scenarios to explain these results. In the first scenario, disc-free lenticulars formed in more violent processes than disc-dominated ones, while in the second scenario, the quenching processes in lenticulars lead to a change in their kinematic structures as disc-dominated lenticulars evolve to disc-free ones.

Revisiting Pulsar Velocities Using Gaia Data Release 2

Precise measurements of neutron star (NS) velocities provide critical clues to the supernova physics and evolution of binary systems. Based on Gaia Data Release 2 (DR2), we selected a sample of 24 young (<3 Myr) pulsars with precise parallax measurements and measured the velocity of their local standard of rest (LSR) and the velocity dispersion among their respective local stellar groups. The median velocity difference between thus calculated LSRs and the Galactic rotation model is ~7.6km/s, small compared to the typical velocity dispersion of ~27.5km/s. For pulsars off the Galactic plane, such differences grow significantly to as large as ~40 km/s. More importantly, the velocity dispersion of stars in the local group of low-velocity pulsars can be comparable to their transverse velocities, suggesting that the intrinsic velocities of NS progenitors should be taken into account when we consider their natal kicks and binary evolution. We also examined the double NS systems J0737- 3039A/B, and measured its transverse velocity to be 26(+18, -13) km/s assuming nearby Gaia sources being representative of its birth environment. This work demonstrated the feasibility and importance of using Gaia data to study the velocity of individual systems and velocity distribution of NSs.

Hierarchical Deep CNN Feature Set-Based Representation Learning for Robust Cross-Resolution Face Recognition

Cross-resolution face recognition (CRFR), which is important in intelligent surveillance and biometric forensics, refers to the problem of matching a low-resolution (LR) probe face image against high-resolution (HR) gallery face images. Existing shallow learning-based and deep learning-based methods focus on mapping the HR-LR face pairs into a joint feature space where the resolution discrepancy is mitigated. However, little works consider how to extract and utilize the intermediate discriminative features from the noisy LR query faces to further mitigate the resolution discrepancy due to the resolution limitations. In this study, we desire to fully exploit the multi-level deep convolutional neural network (CNN) feature set for robust CRFR. In particular, our contributions are threefold. (i) To learn more robust and discriminative features, we desire to adaptively fuse the contextual features from different layers. (ii) To fully exploit these contextual features, we design a feature set-based representation learning (FSRL) scheme to collaboratively represent the hierarchical features for more accurate recognition. Moreover, FSRL utilizes the primitive form of feature maps to keep the latent structural information, especially in noisy cases. (iii) To further promote the recognition performance, we desire to fuse the hierarchical recognition outputs from different stages. Meanwhile, the discriminability from different scales can also be fully integrated. By exploiting these advantages, the efficiency of the proposed method can be delivered. Experimental results on several face datasets have verified the superiority of the presented algorithm to the other competitive CRFR approaches.

Spectroscopic Evidence on Realization of a Genuine Topological Nodal Line Semimetal in LaSbTe

The nodal line semimetals have attracted much attention due to their unique topological electronic structure and exotic physical properties. A genuine nodal line semimetal is qualified by the presence of Dirac nodes along a line in the momentum space that are protected against the spin-orbit coupling. In addition, it requires that the Dirac points lie close to the Fermi level allowing to dictate the macroscopic physical properties. Although the material realization of nodal line semimetals have been theoretically predicted in numerous compounds, only a few of them have been experimentally verified and the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal is particularly rare. Here we report the realization of a genuine nodal line semimetal in LaSbTe. We investigated the electronic structure of LaSbTe by band structure calculations and angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) measurements. Taking spin-orbit coupling into account, our band structure calculations predict that a nodal line is formed in the boundary surface of the Brillouin zone which is robust and lies close to the Fermi level. The Dirac nodes along the X-R line in momentum space are directly observed in our ARPES measurements and the energies of these Dirac nodes are all close to the Fermi level. These results constitute clear evidence that LaSbTe is a genuine nodal line semimetal, providing a new platform to explore for novel phenomena and possible applications associated with the nodal line semimetals.

Integrating Pre-trained Model into Rule-based Dialogue Management

Rule-based dialogue management is still the most popular solution for industrial task-oriented dialogue systems for their interpretablility. However, it is hard for developers to maintain the dialogue logic when the scenarios get more and more complex. On the other hand, data-driven dialogue systems, usually with end-to-end structures, are popular in academic research and easier to deal with complex conversations, but such methods require plenty of training data and the behaviors are less interpretable. In this paper, we propose a method to leverages the strength of both rule-based and data-driven dialogue managers (DM). We firstly introduce the DM of Carina Dialog System (CDS, an advanced industrial dialogue system built by Microsoft). Then we propose the "model-trigger" design to make the DM trainable thus scalable to scenario changes. Furthermore, we integrate pre-trained models and empower the DM with few-shot capability. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and strong few-shot capability of our method.

HpGAN: Sequence Search with Generative Adversarial Networks

Sequences play an important role in many engineering applications and systems. Searching sequences with desired properties has long been an interesting but also challenging research topic. This article proposes a novel method, called HpGAN, to search desired sequences algorithmically using generative adversarial networks (GAN). HpGAN is based on the idea of zero-sum game to train a generative model, which can generate sequences with characteristics similar to the training sequences. In HpGAN, we design the Hopfield network as an encoder to avoid the limitations of GAN in generating discrete data. Compared with traditional sequence construction by algebraic tools, HpGAN is particularly suitable for intractable problems with complex objectives which prevent mathematical analysis. We demonstrate the search capabilities of HpGAN in two applications: 1) HpGAN successfully found many different mutually orthogonal complementary code sets (MOCCS) and optimal odd-length Z-complementary pairs (OB-ZCPs) which are not part of the training set. In the literature, both MOCSSs and OB-ZCPs have found wide applications in wireless communications. 2) HpGAN found new sequences which achieve four-times increase of signal-to-interference ratio--benchmarked against the well-known Legendre sequence--of a mismatched filter (MMF) estimator in pulse compression radar systems. These sequences outperform those found by AlphaSeq.

Superconductivity and Fermi Surface Nesting in the Candidate Dirac Semimetal NbC

We report the synthesis of single-crystal NbC, a transition metal carbide with various unusual properties. Transport, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements demonstrate that NbC is a conventional superconductor with a superconducting transition temperature ($T_c$) of 11.5 K. Our theoretical calculations show that NbC is a type-II Dirac semimetal with strong Fermi surface nesting, which is supported by our ARPES measurement results. We also observed the superconducting gaps of NbC using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and found some unconventional behaviors. These intriguing superconducting and topological properties, combined with the high corrosion resistance, make NbC an ideal platform for both fundamental research and device applications.

Topological electronic structure in the antiferromagnet HoSbTe

Magnetic topological materials, in which the time-reversal symmetry is broken, host various exotic quantum phenomena, including the quantum anomalous Hall effect, axion insulator states, and Majorana fermions. The study of magnetic topological materials is at the forefront of condensed matter physics. Recently, a variety of magnetic topological materials have been reported, such as Mn$_3$Sn, Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$, Fe$_3$Sn$_2$, and MnBi$_2$Te$_4$. Here, we report the observation of a topological electronic structure in an antiferromagnet, HoSbTe, a member of the ZrSiS family of materials, by angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements and first-principles calculations. We demonstrate that HoSbTe is a Dirac nodal line semimetal when spin-orbit coupling (SOC) is neglected. However, our theoretical calculations show that the strong SOC in HoSbTe fully gaps out the nodal lines and drives the system to a weak topological insulator state, with each layer being a two-dimensional topological insulator. Because of the strong SOC in HoSbTe, the gap is as large as hundreds of meV along specific directions, which is directly observed by our ARPES measurements. The existence of magnetic order and topological properties in HoSbTe makes it a promising material for realization of exotic quantum devices.

Magnetic and electronic properties of a topological nodal line semimetal candidate: HoSbTe

We report the experimental and theoretical studies of a magnetic topological nodal line semimetal candidate HoSbTe. Single crystals of HoSbTe are grown from Sb flux, crystallizing in a tetragonal layered structure (space group: P4/nmm, no.129), in which the Ho-Te bilayer is separated by the square-net Sb layer. The magnetization and specific heat present distinct anomalies at 4 K related to an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase transition. Meanwhile, with applying magnetic field perpendicular and parallel to the crystallographic c axis, an obvious magnetic anisotropy is observed. Electrical resistivity undergoes a bad-metal-like state below 200 K and reveals a plateau at about 8 K followed by a drop due to the AFM transition. In addition, with the first-principle calculations of band structure, we find that HoSbTe is a topological nodal line semimetal or a weak topological insulator with or without taking the spin-orbit coupling into account, providing a platform to investigate the interplay between magnetic and topological fermionic properties.

Asymptotics for averages over classical orthogonal ensembles

We study averages of multiplicative eigenvalue statistics in ensembles of orthogonal Haar distributed matrices, which can alternatively be written as Toeplitz+Hankel determinants. We obtain new asymptotics for symbols with Fisher-Hartwig singularities in cases where some of the singularities merge together, and for symbols with a gap or an emerging gap. We obtain these asymptotics by relying on known analogous results in the unitary group and on asymptotics for associated orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle. As consequences of our results, we derive asymptotics for gap probabilities in the Circular Orthogonal and Symplectic Ensembles, and an upper bound for the global eigenvalue rigidity in the orthogonal ensembles.

Generalized bioinspired approach to a daytime radiative cooling "skin"

Energy-saving cooling materials with strong operability are desirable towards sustainable thermal management. Inspired by the cooperative thermo-optical effect in fur of polar bear, we develop a flexible and reusable cooling skin via laminating a polydimethylsiloxane film with a highly-scattering polyethylene aerogel. Owing to its high porosity of 97.9% and tailored pore size of 3.8 +- 1.4 micrometers, superior solar reflectance of 0.96 and high transparency to irradiated thermal energy of 0.8 can be achieved at a thickness of 2.7 mm. Combined with low thermal conductivity of 0.032 W/m/K of the aerogel, the cooling skin exerts midday sub-ambient temperature drops of 5-6 degrees in a metropolitan environment, with an estimated limit of 14 degrees under ideal service conditions. We envision that this generalized bilayer approach will construct a bridge from night-time to daytime radiative cooling and pave the way for economical, scalable, flexible and reusable cooling materials.

Anomalous Hall Effect in Layered Ferrimagnet MnSb2Te4

We report on low-temperature electron transport properties of MnSb2Te4, a candidate of ferrimagnetic Weyl semimetal. Long -range magnetic order is manifested as a nearly square-shaped hysteresis loop in the anomalous Hall resistance, as well as sharp jumps in the magnetoresistance. At temperatures below 4 K, a lnT-type upturn appears in the temperature dependence of longitudinal resistance, which can be attributed to the electron-electron interaction (EEI), since the weak localization can be excluded by the temperature dependence of magnetoresistance. Although the anomalous Hall resistance exhibits a similar lnT-type upturn in the same temperature range, such correction is absent in the anomalous Hall conductivity. Our work demonstrates that MnSb2Te4 microflakes provide an ideal system to test the theory of EEI correction to the anomalous Hall effect.

Mapping the dark matter halo of early-type galaxy NGC 2974 through orbit-based models with combined stellar and cold gas kinematics

We present an orbit-based method of combining stellar and cold gas kinematics to constrain the dark matter profile of early-type galaxies. We apply this method to early-type galaxy NGC 2974, using Pan-STARRS imaging and SAURON stellar kinematics to model the stellar orbits, and introducing HI kinematics from VLA observation as a tracer of the gravitational potential. The introduction of the cold gas kinematics shows a significant effect on the confidence limits of especially the dark halo properties: we exclude more than $95\%$ of models within the $1-σ$ confidence level of Schwarzschild modelling with only stellar kinematics, and reduce the relative uncertainty of the dark matter fraction significantly to $10\%$ within $5 R_\mathrm{e}$. Adopting a generalized-NFW dark matter profile, we measure a shallow cuspy inner slope of $0.6^{+0.2}_{-0.3}$ when including the cold gas kinematics in our model. We cannot constrain the inner slope with the stellar kinematics alone.
