Bringing Chip Tapeout Into University Education

Providing students with experience from chip specification to fabricated silicon can strengthen chip-design education, but integrating tapeout into regular teaching is difficult to scale, especially across universities with different curricula, schedules, regulations, and technical infrastructures. This article discusses the implementation experience and lessons learned from a cross-university approach developed within the Edu4Chip European project. The approach combines aligned learning outcomes, local Master's implementations, and a shared design-to-silicon framework across five European universities.

Efficient Bound for Conditional Min-Entropy of Physical Unclonable Functions Beyond IID

The remaining min-entropy of a secret generated by fuzzy extraction from a Physical Unclonable Function is typically estimated under the assumption of independent and identically distributed PUF responses, but this assumption does not hold in practice. This work analyzes the more realistic case that the responses are independent but not necessarily identically distributed. For this case, we extend the (n-k) bound and a tighter bound by Delvaux et al. In particular, we suggest a grouping bound which provides a trade off for accuracy vs computational effort. Comparison to previous bounds shows the accuracy and efficiency of our bound. We also adapt the key rank (a tool from side-channel analysis) to cross-validate the state-of-the-art and our proposed min-entropy bounds based on publicly available PUF data from real hardware.

On the Confidence in Bit-Alias Measurement of Physical Unclonable Functions

Physical Unclonable Functions (PUFs) are modern solutions for cheap and secure key storage. The security level strongly depends on a PUF's unpredictability, which is impaired if certain bits of the PUF response tend towards the same value on all devices. The expectation for the probability of 1 at some position in the response, the Bit-Alias, is a state-of-the-art metric in this regard. However, the confidence interval of the Bit-Alias is never considered, which can lead to an overestimation of a PUF's unpredictability. Moreover, no tool is available to verify if the Bit-Alias is within given limits. This work adapts a method for the calculation of confidence intervals to Bit-Alias. It further proposes a statistical hypothesis test to verify if a PUF design meets given specifications on Bit-Alias or bit-wise entropy. Application to several published PUF designs demonstrates the methods' capabilities. The results prove the need for a high number of samples when the unpredictability of PUFs is tested. The proposed methods are publicly available and should improve the design and evaluation of PUFs in the future.

Statistic-Based Security Analysis of Ring Oscillator PUFs

Ring oscillators (ROs) are a robust way to implement a physical unclonable function (PUF) into ASICs or FPGAs, but claims of predictability arose recently. We describe why this likely results from not using adjacent ROs for pairwise comparison because of spatial patterns in mean frequency and correlation coefficients found by principal component analysis. We show that the covariance is too small for our approach to estimate bits if adjacent ROs are compared. Our assumption of normality for the inter-device distribution passes an Anderson-Darling test and we outline that devices with proximate serial numbers are not more similar than other devices.
