Fairness or Fallacy? Mapping the Landscape of AI Bias in Disease Detection

Artificial intelligence (AI) has several transformative effects on healthcare, like to facilitate clinicians in disease detection and to manage patient care with enhanced precision. Due to the increasing complexity of medical data and the growing volume of diagnostic images, the substantial computational power needed to process such information creates both opportunities and challenges. To accomplish this objective, numerous methodologies have been proposed to integrate AI into disease detection systems. All these methodologies consider different aspects of clinical diagnosis, considering key parameters such as the type of AI model employed, the nature of input data, and the population demographics being analysed. In this paper, we review different state-of-the-art techniques which have been proposed for various areas of disease detection, specifically focusing on bias identification and mitigation. The proposed solutions are distinguished based on the type of input data they utilize, the architecture of model, and type of bias (algorithmic bias, demographic bias, model bias, and deployment bias). The time frame chosen to filter out relevant studies is between 2015 and 2026. Eventually, we review 23 related articles out of 64,389 analyzed from seven different digital libraries. The obtained results guide us to reach a conclusion with respect to state-of-the-art selected studies. Furthermore, these results reveal significant research gaps that can assist researchers in addressing AI-related bias in medical diagnosis. By prioritizing explainability, data diversity, and fairness in algorithmic design, as well as equitable access for affected patient populations, they can utilize available healthcare resources more effectively.

DATCloud: A Model-Driven Framework for Multi-Layered Data-Intensive Architectures

The complexity of multi-layered, data-intensive systems demands frameworks that ensure flexibility, scalability, and efficiency. DATCloud is a model-driven framework designed to facilitate the modeling, validation, and refinement of multi-layered architectures, addressing scalability, modularity, and real-world requirements. By adhering to ISO/IEC/IEEE 42010 standards, DATCloud leverages structural and behavioral meta-models and graphical domain-specific languages (DSLs) to enhance reusability and stakeholder communication. Initial validation through the VASARI system at the Uffizi Gallery demonstrates a 40% reduction in modeling time and a 32% improvement in flexibility compared to manual methods. While effective, DATCloud is a work in progress, with plans to integrate advanced code generation, simulation tools, and domain-specific extensions to further enhance its capabilities for applications in healthcare, smart cities, and other data-intensive domains.

Architecting Data-Intensive Applications : From Data Architecture Design to Its Quality Assurance

Context - The exponential growth of data is becoming a significant concern. Managing this data has become incredibly challenging, especially when dealing with various sources in different formats and speeds. Moreover, Ensuring data quality has become increasingly crucial for effective decision-making and operational processes. Data Architecture is crucial in describing, collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing data to meet business needs. Providing an abstract view of data-intensive applications is essential to ensure that the data is transformed into valuable information. We must take these challenges seriously to ensure we can effectively manage and use the data to our advantage. Objective - To establish an architecture framework that enables a comprehensive description of the data architecture and effectively streamlines data quality monitoring. Method - The architecture framework utilizes Model Driven Engineering (MDE) techniques. Its backing of data-intensive architecture descriptions empowers with an automated generation for data quality checks. Result - The Framework offers a comprehensive solution for data-intensive applications to model their architecture efficiently and monitor the quality of their data. It automates the entire process and ensures precision and consistency in data. With DAT, architects and analysts gain access to a powerful tool that simplifies their workflow and empowers them to make informed decisions based on reliable data insights. Conclusion - We have evaluated the DAT on more than five cases within various industry domains, demonstrating its exceptional adaptability and effectiveness.

Data Architecture for Digital Object Space Management Service (DOSM) using DAT

The Internet of Things (IoT) data and social media data are two of the fastest-growing data segments. Having high-quality data is crucial for making informed business decisions. The strategic process of leveraging insights from data is known as data-driven decision-making. To achieve this, it is necessary to collect, store, analyze, and protect data in the best ways possible. Data architecture is a complex task that involves describing the flow of data from its source to its destination and creating a blueprint for managing the data to meet business needs for information. In this paper, we utilize the Data Architecture Tool (DAT) to model data for Digital Space Management Service, which was developed as part of the VASARI project. This work focuses on describing the movement of data, data formats, data location, data processing (batch or real-time), data storage technologies, and main operations on the data.

DAT: Data Architecture Modeling Tool for Data-Driven Applications

Data is the key to success for any Data-Driven Organization, and managing it is considered the most challenging task. Data Architecture (DA) focuses on describing, collecting, storing, processing, and analyzing the data to meet business needs. In this tool demo paper, we present the DAT, a model-driven engineering tool enabling data architects, data engineers, and other stakeholders to describe how data flows through the system and provides a blueprint for managing data that saves time and effort dedicated to Data Architectures for IoT applications. We evaluated this work by modeling five case studies, receiving expressiveness and ease of use feedback from two companies, more than six researchers, and eighteen undergraduate students from the software architecture course
