Near-resonance tidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system influenced by orbital-scale climate change

We build a conceptual coupled model of the climate and tidal evolution of the Earth-Moon system to find the influence of the former on the latter. An energy balance model is applied to calculate steady-state temperature field from the mean annual insolation as a function of varying astronomical parameters. A harmonic oscillator model is applied to integrate the lunar orbit and Earth's rotation with the tidal torque dependent on the dominant natural frequency of ocean. An ocean geometry acts as a bridge between temperature and oceanic frequency. On assumptions of a fixed hemispherical continent and an equatorial circular lunar orbit, considering only the 41 kyr periodicity of Earth's obliquity $\varepsilon$ and the $M_2$ tide, simulations are performed near tidal resonance for $10^6$ yr. It is verified that the climate can influence the tidal evolution via ocean. Compared with the tidal evolution with constant $\varepsilon$, that with varying $\varepsilon$ is slowed down; the Earth-Moon distance oscillates in phase with $\varepsilon$ before the resonance maximum but exactly out of phase after that; the displacement of the oscillation is in positive correlation with the difference between oceanic frequency and tidal frequency.

DeFog: Fog Computing Benchmarks

Fog computing envisions that deploying services of an application across resources in the cloud and those located at the edge of the network may improve the overall performance of the application when compared to running the application on the cloud. However, there are currently no benchmarks that can directly compare the performance of the application across the cloud-only, edge-only and cloud-edge deployment platform to obtain any insight on performance improvement. This paper proposes DeFog, a first Fog benchmarking suite to: (i) alleviate the burden of Fog benchmarking by using a standard methodology, and (ii) facilitate the understanding of the target platform by collecting a catalogue of relevant metrics for a set of benchmarks. The current portfolio of DeFog benchmarks comprises six relevant applications conducive to using the edge. Experimental studies are carried out on multiple target platforms to demonstrate the use of DeFog for collecting metrics related to application latencies (communication and computation), for understanding the impact of stress and concurrent users on application latencies, and for understanding the performance of deploying different combination of services of an application across the cloud and edge. DeFog is available for public download (https://github.com/qub-blesson/DeFog).

The FacT: Taming Latent Factor Models for Explainability with Factorization Trees

Latent factor models have achieved great success in personalized recommendations, but they are also notoriously difficult to explain. In this work, we integrate regression trees to guide the learning of latent factor models for recommendation, and use the learnt tree structure to explain the resulting latent factors. Specifically, we build regression trees on users and items respectively with user-generated reviews, and associate a latent profile to each node on the trees to represent users and items. With the growth of regression tree, the latent factors are gradually refined under the regularization imposed by the tree structure. As a result, we are able to track the creation of latent profiles by looking into the path of each factor on regression trees, which thus serves as an explanation for the resulting recommendations. Extensive experiments on two large collections of Amazon and Yelp reviews demonstrate the advantage of our model over several competitive baseline algorithms. Besides, our extensive user study also confirms the practical value of explainable recommendations generated by our model.

Production mechanism of neutron-rich nuclei around $N=126$ in multi-nucleon transfer reaction $^{132}$Sn + $^{208}$Pb

Time-dependent Hartree-Fock approach in three dimensions is employed to study the multi-nucleon transfer reaction $^{132}$Sn + $^{208}$Pb at various incident energies above the Coulomb barrier. Probabilities for different transfer channels are calculated by using particle-number projection method. The results indicate that neutron stripping (transfer from the projectile to the target) and proton pick-up (transfer from the target to the projectile) are favored. Deexcitation of the primary fragments are treated by using the state-of-art statistical code GEMINI++. Primary and final production cross sections of the target-like fragments (with $Z=77$ to $Z=87$) are investigated. The results reveal that fission decay of heavy nuclei plays an important role in the deexcitation process of nuclei with $Z>82$. It is also found that the final production cross sections of neutron-rich (deficient) nuclei slightly (strongly) depend on the incident energy.

Unpaired Photo-to-Caricature Translation on Faces in the Wild

Recently, image-to-image translation has been made much progress owing to the success of conditional Generative Adversarial Networks (cGANs). And some unpaired methods based on cycle consistency loss such as DualGAN, CycleGAN and DiscoGAN are really popular. However, it's still very challenging for translation tasks with the requirement of high-level visual information conversion, such as photo-to-caricature translation that requires satire, exaggeration, lifelikeness and artistry. We present an approach for learning to translate faces in the wild from the source photo domain to the target caricature domain with different styles, which can also be used for other high-level image-to-image translation tasks. In order to capture global structure with local statistics while translation, we design a dual pathway model with one coarse discriminator and one fine discriminator. For generator, we provide one extra perceptual loss in association with adversarial loss and cycle consistency loss to achieve representation learning for two different domains. Also the style can be learned by the auxiliary noise input. Experiments on photo-to-caricature translation of faces in the wild show considerable performance gain of our proposed method over state-of-the-art translation methods as well as its potential real applications.

A spectral penalty method for two-sided fractional differential equations with general boundary conditions

We consider spectral approximations to the conservative form of the two-sided Riemann-Liouville (R-L) and Caputo fractional differential equations (FDEs) with nonhomogeneous Dirichlet (fractional and classical, respectively) and Neumann (fractional) boundary conditions. In particular, we develop a spectral penalty method (SPM) by using the Jacobi poly-fractonomial approximation for the conservative R-L FDEs while using the polynomial approximation for the conservative Caputo FDEs. We establish the well-posedness of the corresponding weak problems and analyze sufficient conditions for the coercivity of the SPM for different types of fractional boundary value problems. This analysis allows us to estimate the proper values of the penalty parameters at boundary points. We present several numerical examples to verify the theory and demonstrate the high accuracy of SPM, both for stationary and time dependent FDEs. Moreover, we compare the results against a Petrov-Galerkin spectral tau method (PGS-$τ$, an extension of [Z. Mao, G.E. Karniadakis, SIAM J. Numer. Anal., 2018]) and demonstrate the superior accuracy of SPM for all cases considered.

Electrically programmable chiral MEMS photonics

Optical chirality is central to many industrial photonic technologies including enantiomer identification, ellipsometry-based tomography and spin multiplexing in optical communication. However, a substantial chiral response requires a typical three-dimensional (3D) constituent, thereby making the paradigm highly complex. Photonic devices integrated with microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) have shown potential for chiral light control by external stimuli, but the stimuli usually demand a destructive dosage. Here, we report a simple synthetic chiral paradigm that is electrically programmable with self-assembled 3D MEMS cantilevers. This paradigm enables four reconfigurable chiral schemes with dextrorotary, levorotary, racemic and achiral conformations. Optical response of reversible chirality and chiral to achiral switch are electrically encoded following an exclusive OR logical operation with dual-channel bias as low as 10 V. Our device demonstrates a route to electrically actuated synthetic chiral platform and serves as a powerful conformation analysis tool for macromolecules in biology, medicine, chemistry and physics. The prototype delivers a new strategy towards reconfigurable stereoselective photonic applications.

Explainable Recommendation via Multi-Task Learning in Opinionated Text Data

Explaining automatically generated recommendations allows users to make more informed and accurate decisions about which results to utilize, and therefore improves their satisfaction. In this work, we develop a multi-task learning solution for explainable recommendation. Two companion learning tasks of user preference modeling for recommendation} and \textit{opinionated content modeling for explanation are integrated via a joint tensor factorization. As a result, the algorithm predicts not only a user's preference over a list of items, i.e., recommendation, but also how the user would appreciate a particular item at the feature level, i.e., opinionated textual explanation. Extensive experiments on two large collections of Amazon and Yelp reviews confirmed the effectiveness of our solution in both recommendation and explanation tasks, compared with several existing recommendation algorithms. And our extensive user study clearly demonstrates the practical value of the explainable recommendations generated by our algorithm.

Impact parameter smearing effects on isospin sensitive observables in heavy ion collisions

The validity of impact parameter estimation from the multiplicity of charged particles at low-intermediate energies is checked within the framework of ImQMD model. The simulations show that the multiplicity of charged particles cannot estimate the impact parameter of heavy ion collisions very well, especially for central collisions at the beam energies lower than $\sim$70 MeV/u due to the large fluctuations of the multiplicity of charged particles. The simulation results for the central collisions defined by the charged particle multiplicity are compared to those by using impact parameter b=2 fm and it shows that the charge distribution for $^{112}$Sn +$^{112}$Sn at 50 MeV/u is different evidently for two cases; and the chosen isospin sensitive observable, the coalescence invariant single neutron to proton yield ratio, reduces less than 15\% for neutron-rich systems $^{124,132}$Sn +$^{124}$Sn at $E_{beam}$=50 MeV/u, while the coalescence invariant double neutron to proton yield ratio does not have obvious difference. The sensitivity of the chosen isospin sensitive observables to effective mass splitting is studied for central collisions defined by the multiplicity of charged particles. Our results show that the sensitivity is enhanced for $^{132}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn relative to that for $^{124}$Sn+$^{124}$Sn, and this reaction system should be measured in future experiments to study the effective mass splitting by heavy ion collisions.

"Exclusive-OR" operation with Fano resonant MEMS Metamaterial

In recent years, a range of reconfigurable metamaterials controlled with thermal, electric, magnetic and optical signals have been developed for dynamically manipulating the intensity, phase and wave-front of electromagnetic radiation across the broad electromagnetic spectrum ranging from microwave to optics. Here for the first time, we demonstrate a reconfigurable metasurface performing exclusive OR (XOR) logical operation using two independent control electrical inputs and an optical read-out in the form of far-field Fano intensity states at terahertz wavelengths. At the same time, the near field resonant confinement enables a universal NAND logical operation. Further, by using a single electrical input control and an optical readout, a logical NOT operation is achieved at the far-field intensity states of the Fano resonance. The proposed reconfigurable microcantilever based Fano design that exhibits multiple logical operations can create a versatile platform for realization of programmable and randomly accessible metamaterials with enhanced electro-optical performance, multichannel data processing and encryption techniques for high speed wireless networks which are now being pushed towards terahertz wavelengths.

Structural and Chemical Orders in Ni64.5Zr35.5 Metallic Glass by Molecular Dynamics Simulation

The atomic structure of Ni64.5Zr35.5 metallic glass has been investigated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The calculated structure factors from the MD glassy sample at room temperature agree well with the X-ray diffraction (XRD) and neutron diffraction (ND) experimental data. Using the pairwise cluster alignment and clique analysis methods, we show that there are three types dominant short-range order (SRO) motifs around Ni atoms in the glass sample of Ni64.5Zr35.5, i.e., Mixed-Icosahedron(ICO)-Cube, Twined-Cube and icosahedron-like clusters. Furthermore, chemical order and medium-range order (MRO) analysis show that the Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube clusters exhibit the characteristics of the crystalline B2 phase. Our simulation results suggest that the weak glass-forming ability (GFA) of Ni64.5Zr35.5 can be attributed to the competition between the glass forming ICO SRO and the crystalline Mixed-ICO-Cube and Twined-Cube motifs.

Pipeline Generative Adversarial Networks for Facial Images Generation with Multiple Attributes

Generative Adversarial Networks are proved to be efficient on various kinds of image generation tasks. However, it is still a challenge if we want to generate images precisely. Many researchers focus on how to generate images with one attribute. But image generation under multiple attributes is still a tough work. In this paper, we try to generate a variety of face images under multiple constraints using a pipeline process. The Pip-GAN (Pipeline Generative Adversarial Network) we present employs a pipeline network structure which can generate a complex facial image step by step using a neutral face image. We applied our method on two face image databases and demonstrate its ability to generate convincing novel images of unseen identities under multiple conditions previously.

Edge-as-a-Service: Towards Distributed Cloud Architectures

We present an Edge-as-a-Service (EaaS) platform for realising distributed cloud architectures and integrating the edge of the network in the computing ecosystem. The EaaS platform is underpinned by (i) a lightweight discovery protocol that identifies edge nodes and make them publicly accessible in a computing environment, and (ii) a scalable resource provisioning mechanism for offloading workloads from the cloud on to the edge for servicing multiple user requests. We validate the feasibility of EaaS on an online game use-case to highlight the improvement in the QoS of the application hosted on our cloud-edge platform. On this platform we demonstrate (i) low overheads of less than 6%, (ii) reduced data traffic to the cloud by up to 95% and (iii) minimised application latency between 40%-60%.

Phase-field model of vapor-liquid-solid nanowire growth

We present a multi-phase-field model to describe quantitatively nanowire growth by the vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) process. The free-energy functional of this model depends on three non-conserved order parameters that distinguish the vapor, liquid, and solid phases. The evolution equations for those order parameters describe basic kinetic processes including the rapid (quasi-instantaneous) equilibration of the liquid catalyst to a droplet shape with constant mean curvature, the slow incorporation of growth atoms at the droplet surface, and crystallization within the droplet. The standard constraint that the sum of the phase fields equals unity and the conservation of the number of catalyst atoms, which relates the catalyst volume to the concentration of growth atoms inside the droplet, are handled via separate Lagrange multipliers. An analysis of the model is presented that rigorously maps the phase-field equations to a desired set of sharp-interface equations for the evolution of the phase boundaries under the constraint of force-balance at three-phase junctions given by the Young-Herring relation that includes torque term related to the anisotropy of the solid-liquid and solid-vapor interface excess free energies. Numerical examples of growth in two dimensions are presented. The simulations reproduce many of the salient features of nanowire growth observed experimentally, including growth normal to the substrate with tapering of the side walls, transitions between different growth orientations, and crawling growth along the substrate.

ENORM: A Framework For Edge NOde Resource Management

Current computing techniques using the cloud as a centralised server will become untenable as billions of devices get connected to the Internet. This raises the need for fog computing, which leverages computing at the edge of the network on nodes, such as routers, base stations and switches, along with the cloud. However, to realise fog computing the challenge of managing edge nodes will need to be addressed. This paper is motivated to address the resource management challenge. We develop the first framework to manage edge nodes, namely the Edge NOde Resource Management (ENORM) framework. Mechanisms for provisioning and auto-scaling edge node resources are proposed. The feasibility of the framework is demonstrated on a PokeMon Go-like online game use-case. The benefits of using ENORM are observed by reduced application latency between 20% - 80% and reduced data transfer and communication frequency between the edge node and the cloud by up to 95\%. These results highlight the potential of fog computing for improving the quality of service and experience.

Three-dimensional vortex structures and dynamics in hexagonal manganites

Hexagonal manganites REMnO3 (RE, rare earths) have attracted significant attention due to their potential applications as multiferroic materials and the intriguing physics associated with the topological defects. The two-dimensional (2D) and 3D domain and vortex structure evolution of REMnO3 is predicted using the phase-field method based on a thermodynamic potential constructed from first-principles calculations. In 3D spaces, vortex lines show three types of topological changes, i.e. shrinking, coalescence, and splitting, with the latter two caused by the interaction and exchange of vortex loops. Compared to the coarsening rate of the isotropic XY model, the six-fold degeneracy gives rise to negligible differences with the vortex-antivortex annihilation controlling the scaling dynamics, whereas the anisotropy of interfacial energy results in a deviation. The temporal evolution of domain and vortex structures serves as a platform to fully explore the mesoscale mechanisms for the 0-D and 1-D topological defects.

Magnetic Flux Tailoring through Lenz Lenses in Toroidal Diamond Indenter Cells: A New Pathway to High Pressure Nuclear Magnetic Resonance

A new pathway to nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in high pressure diamond anvil cells is introduced, using inductively coupled broadband passive electro-magnetic lenses to locally amplify the magnetic flux at the isolated sample, leading to an increase in sensitivity. The lenses are adopted for the geometrical restrictions imposed by a toroidal diamond indenter cell, and yield high signal-to-noise ratios at pressures as high as 72 GPa, at initial sample volumes of only 230 pl. The corresponding levels of detection, LODt, are found to be up to four orders of magnitude lower compared to formerly used solenoidal micro-coils in diamond anvil cells, as shown by Proton-NMR measurements on paraffin oil. This approach opens up the field of ultra-high pressure sciences for one of the most versatile spectroscopic methods available in a pressure range unprecedended up to now.

Feasibility of Fog Computing

As billions of devices get connected to the Internet, it will not be sustainable to use the cloud as a centralised server. The way forward is to decentralise computations away from the cloud towards the edge of the network closer to the user. This reduces the latency of communication between a user device and the cloud, and is the premise of 'fog computing' defined in this paper. The aim of this paper is to highlight the feasibility and the benefits in improving the Quality-of-Service and Experience by using fog computing. For an online game use-case, we found that the average response time for a user is improved by 20% when using the edge of the network in comparison to using a cloud-only model. It was also observed that the volume of traffic between the edge and the cloud server is reduced by over 90% for the use-case. The preliminary results highlight the potential of fog computing in achieving a sustainable computing model and highlights the benefits of integrating the edge of the network into the computing ecosystem.
