Selective sparsity-enhanced synchronization in disordered semiconductor laser networks

Biological networks tend to leverage selective sparsity as an economic strategy to optimize function while minimizing wiring costs. In contrast, achieving synchronization in engineered systems such as semiconductor laser arrays is traditionally expected to require resource-intensive coupling %strong connections to overcome intrinsic frequency disorders. We demonstrate that selectively coupled sparse networks can outperform fully connected architectures, achieving near-complete synchronization with a significantly reduced coupling budget. Using an evolutionary algorithm, we identify a ``pairing opposites" principle: optimal structures specifically prioritize connections between oscillators with the largest opposite frequency detuning. This topology neutralizes dynamical interference induced by redundant links, leading to stable synchronization. We formalize this mechanism through a thermodynamic potential framework, mapping time-delayed phase dynamics to an energy landscape where optimal sparsity prunes additional states to stabilize global phase-locking. Furthermore, we show that the optimal connectivity scales inversely with system size. This principle provides a resource-efficient blueprint for synchronizing and stabilizing diverse complex networks, from photonic arrays to neuromorphic hardware.

Tailoring complex coupling for efficient synchronization of semiconductor lasers

A grand challenge for laser synchronization is the intrinsic frequency disorder. We build an experimental platform for programming the complex coupling coefficients of semiconductor lasers to promote frequency and phase locking. The coupling amplitude between every pair of lasers in an array is tuned to scale with their frequency difference. Coupling phases are scanned to meet the phase matching conditions for constructive interference of coupled fields. The minimum coupling budget for global synchronization is significantly reduced, as shown experimentally for three vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers with intrinsic frequency detuning. The customized coupling offers an efficient approach to stable synchronization of semiconductor laser arrays for coherent beam combining.

Enhanced synchronization with proportional coupling in Kuramoto oscillator networks

We introduce a novel coupling scheme for maximizing the synchronization of Kuramoto oscillator networks under a fixed coupling budget. We show that by scaling the interaction strength between oscillators according to their frequency detuning, synchronization is enhanced. The coupling scheme induces a change in criticality, driving the system from a continuous phase transition to an explosive transition by changing a single parameter. Our work offers a general route to efficient synchronization in engineered networks and provides insight into the critical behavior of the Kuramoto model.

Disorder-mediated synchronization resonance in coupled semiconductor lasers

Disorder can profoundly influence synchronization in networks of nonlinear oscillators, sometimes enhancing coherence through external tuning. In semiconductor lasers, however, achieving high-quality steady-state synchronization is desired, while intrinsic and typically uncontrollable disorder poses a major challenge. Under fixed frequency disorder, we investigate homogeneous fully coupled external-cavity semiconductor lasers governed by the complex, time-delayed Lang-Kobayashi equations with experimentally relevant parameters and identify an optimal coupling strength that maximizes steady-state synchronization in the weak-coupling regime, which we term disorder-mediated synchronization resonance. This optimum appears for any fixed configuration of intrinsic frequency detuning and scales inversely with the number of lasers, leading to a linear scaling of the total coupling cost with the number of lasers. A theory based on an effective thermodynamic potential explains this disorder-mediated optimization, revealing a general mechanism by which moderate coupling can overcome static heterogeneity in nonlinear physical systems.
