An application of the hit problem to the algebraic transfer

Let $P_k$ be the polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ over the field $\mathbb F_2$ with two elements, in $k$ variables $x_1, x_2, \ldots , x_k$, each variable of degree 1. Denote by $GL_k$ the general linear group over $\mathbb F_2$ which regularly acts on $P_k$. The algebra $P_k$ is a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A$. In 1989, Singer [22] defined the $k$-th homological algebraic transfer, which is a homomorphism $$\varphi_k=(\varphi_k)_m :{\rm Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+m} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2) \to (\mathbb F_2\otimes_{\mathcal A}P_k)_m^{GL_k}$$ from the homological group of the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+m} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$ to the subspace $(\mathbb F_2\otimes_{\mathcal A}P_k)_m^{GL_k}$ of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $m$. In general, the transfer $\varphi_k$ is not a monomorphism and Singer made a conjecture that $\varphi_k$ is an epimorphism for any $k \geqslant 0$. The conjecture is studied by many authors. It is true for $k \leqslant 3$ but unknown for $k \geqslant 4$. In this paper, by using the results of the Peterson hit problem for the polynomial algebra in four variables, we prove that Singer's conjecture for the fourth algebraic transfer is true in the families of generic degrees $d_{s,t} = 2^{s+t}+2^s-3$ and $n_{s,t}=2^{s+t}+2^s-2$ with $s,\, t$ positive integers. Our results also show that many of the results in Ph\'uc [16,17,18] are seriously false. The proofs of the results in Ph\'uc's works are only provided for a few special cases but they are false and incomplete.

Determination of the fifth Singer algebraic transfer in some degrees

Let $P_k$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ over the prime field $\mathbb F_2$ with two elements and the degree of each variable $x_i$ being 1, and let $GL_k$ be the general linear group over $\mathbb F_2$ which acts on $P_k$ as the usual manner. The algebra $P_k$ is considered as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A$. In 1989, Singer [22] defined the $k$-th homological algebraic transfer, which is a homomorphism $$\varphi_k :{\rm Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+d} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2) \to (\mathbb F_2\otimes_{\mathcal A}P_k)_d^{GL_k}$$ from the homological group of the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+d} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$ to the subspace $(\mathbb F_2\otimes_{\mathcal A}P_k)_d^{GL_k}$ of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $d$. In this paper, by using the results of the Peterson hit problem we present the proof of the fact that the Singer algebraic transfer of rank five is an isomorphism in the internal degrees $d= 20$ and $d = 30$. Our result refutes the proof for the case of $d=20$ in Ph\'uc [17].

A counter-example to Singer's conjecture for the algebraic transfer

Write $P_k:= \mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ for the polynomial algebra over the prime field $\mathbb F_2$ with two elements, in $k$ generators $x_1, x_2, \ldots , x_k$, each of degree 1. The polynomial algebra $P_k$ is considered as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal A$. Let $GL_k$ be the general linear group over the field $\mathbb F_2$. This group acts naturally on $P_k$ by matrix substitution. Since the two actions of $\mathcal A$ and $GL_k$ upon $P_k$ commute with each other, there is an inherit action of $GL_k$ on $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$. Denote by $(\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k)_n^{GL_k}$ the subspace of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $n$. In 1989, Singer [24] defined the homological algebraic transfer $$\varphi_k :\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+n}(\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2) \longrightarrow (\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k)_n^{GL_k},$$ where $\mbox{Tor}^{\mathcal{A}}_{k, k+n}(\mathbb{F}_2, \mathbb{F}_2)$ is the dual of Ext$_{\mathcal{A}}^{k,k+n}(\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$, the $E_2$ term of the Adams spectral sequence of spheres. In this paper, by using a technique of the Peterson hit problem we prove that Singer's conjecture is not true for $k=5$ and the internal degree $n = 108$. This result also refutes a one of Ph\'uc in [19].

A minimal set of generators for the polynomial algebra of five variables in a generic degree

Let $P_k$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ over the prime field with two elements, $\mathbb F_2$, with the degree of each $x_i$ being 1. We study the hit problem, set up by Frank Peterson, of finding a minimal set of generators for $P_k$ as a module over the mod-$2$ Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}.$ It is an open problem in Algebraic Topology. In this paper, we explicitly determine a minimal set of $\mathcal{A}$-generators for $P_5$ in the case of the generic degree $m = 2^{d}$ for all $d \geqslant 8$.

The squaring operation and the hit problem for the polynomial algebra in a type of generic degree

Let $P_k$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ with the degree of each generator $x_i$ being 1, where $\mathbb F_2$ denote the prime field with two elements. The hit problem of Frank Peterson asks for a minimal generating set for the polynomial algebra $P_k$ as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal{A}$. Equivalently, we want to find a vector space basis for $\mathbb F_2 \otimes_{\mathcal A} P_k$ in each degree. In this paper, we study a generating set for the kernel of Kameko's squaring operation $\widetilde{Sq}^0_*: \mathbb F_2 \otimes_{\mathcal A} P_k \longrightarrow \mathbb F_2 \otimes_{\mathcal A} P_k$ in a so-called generic degree. By using this result, we explicitly compute the hit problem for $k=5$ in the respective generic degree.

The admissible monomial bases for the polynomial algebra of five variables in some types of generic degrees

We study the hit problem, set up by Frank Peterson, of finding a minimal set of generators for $P_k$ as a module over the mod-$2$ Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}.$ In this paper, we explicitly determine a minimal set of $\mathcal{A}$-generators for $P_5$ in the case of the degrees $n = 2^{d+1} - 1$ and $n = 2^{d+1} - 2$ for all $d \geqslant 6$.

On a construction for the generators of the polynomial algebra as a module over the Steenrod algebra

Let $P_n$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_n]$ with the degree of each generator $x_i$ being 1, where $\mathbb F_2$ denote the prime field of two elements. The Peterson hit problem is to find a minimal generating set for $P_n$ regarded as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}$. Equivalently, we want to find a vector space basis for $\mathbb F_2 \otimes_{\mathcal A} P_n$ in each degree $d$. Such a basis may be represented by a list of monomials of degree $d$. In this paper, we present a construction for the $\mathcal A$-generators of $P_n$ and prove some properties of it. We also explicitly determine a basis of $\mathbb F_2 \otimes_{\mathcal A} P_n$ for $n = 5$ and the degree $d = 15.2^s - 5$ with $s$ an arbitrary positive integer. These results are used to verify Singer's conjecture for the fifth Singer algebraic transfer in respective degree.

On the determination of the Singer transfer

Let $P_k$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$ with the degree of each generator $x_i$ being 1, where $\mathbb F_2$ denote the prime field of two elements, and let $GL_k$ be the general linear group over $\mathbb F_2$ which acts regularly on $P_k$. We study the algebraic transfer $Tr_k^*$ constructed by Singer using the technique of the Peterson hit problem. This transfer is a homomorphism from the homology of the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A$, $\text{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+d} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$, to the subspace of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $d$. In this paper, by using the results on the Peterson hit problem we present the proof of the fact that the Singer algebraic transfer is an isomorphism for $k \leqslant 3$. We also explicitly determine the fourth Singer algebraic transfer in some degrees. The new results in the paper are different from the ones of Bruner, Ha and Hung [5], Chon and Ha [6,7,8], Ha [9], Hung and Quynh [12], Nam [16]. To illustrate the fact that $d_0 \in \mbox{Im}(Tr_4)$, we present the computations of Ha [9, Page 102] for this result. We can easily verify that these computations are correct. So, it is possible the algorithm in Phuc [29] is flawed.

On the module structure over the Steenrod algebra of the Dickson algebra

Let $p$ be an odd prime number. We study the problem of determining the module structure over the mod $p$ Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A(p)$ of the Dickson algebra $D_n$ consisting of all modular invariants of general linear group $GL(n,\mathbb F_p)$. Here $\mathbb F_p$ denotes the prime field of $p$ elements. In this paper, we give an explicit answer for $n=2$. More precisely, we explicitly compute the action of the Steenrod-Milnor operations $St^{S,R}$ on the generators of $D_n$ for $n=2$ and for either $S=\emptyset, R=(i)$ or $S=(s), R=(i)$ with $s,i$ arbitrary nonnegative integers.

On the action of the Steenrod-Milnor operations on the invariants of the general linear groups

Let $p$ be an odd prime number. Denote by $GL_n = GL(n,\mathbb F_p)$ the general linear group over the prime field $\mathbb F_p$. Each subgroup of $GL_n$ acts on the algebra $P_n=E(x_1,\ldots,x_n)\otimes \mathbb F_p(y_1,\ldots,y_n)$ in the usual manner. We grade $P_n$ by assigning $\dim x_i=1$ and $\dim y_i=2.$ This algebra is a module over the mod $p$ Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A_p$. The purpose of the paper is to compute the action of the Steenrod-Milnor operations on the generators of $P_2^{GL_2}$. More precisely, we explicitly determine the action of $St^{(i,j)}$ on the Dickson invariants $Q_{2,0}$ and $Q_{2,1}$.

The squaring operartion and the Singer algebraic transfer

Let $P_k$ be the graded polynomial algebra $\mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots ,x_k]$, with the degree of each $x_i$ being 1, regarded as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra $\mathcal A$, and let $GL_k$ be the general linear group over the prime field $\mathbb F_2$ which acts regularly on $P_k$. We study the algebraic transfer constructed by Singer using the technique of the hit problem. This transfer is a homomorphism from the homology of the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\text{Tor}^{\mathcal A}_{k,k+n} (\mathbb F_2,\mathbb F_2)$, to the subspace of $\mathbb F_2{\otimes}_{\mathcal A}P_k$ consisting of all the $GL_k$-invariant classes of degree $n$. In this paper, we extend a result of Hung on the relation between the Singer algebraic transfer and the squaring operation on the cohomology of the Steenrod algebra. Using this result, we show that Singer's conjecture for the algebraic transfer is true in the case $k=5$ and the degree $5(2^{s} -1)$ with $s$ an arbitrary positive integer.

On the generators of the polynomial algebra as a module over the Steenrod algebra

Let $P_k:= \mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,\ldots,x_k]$ be the polynomial algebra over the prime field of two elements, $\mathbb F_2$, in $k$ variables $x_1, x_2, \ldots, x_k$, each of degree 1. We are interested in the Peterson hit problem of finding a minimal set of generators for $P_k$ as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper, we study the hit problem in degree $(k-1)(2^d-1)$ with $d$ a positive integer. Our result implies the one of Mothebe [4,5].

On the Peterson hit problem

We study the hit problem, set up by F. Peterson, of finding a minimal set of generators for the polynomial algebra $P_k := \mathbb F_2[x_1,x_2,...,x_k]$ as a module over the mod-2 Steenrod algebra, $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper, we study a minimal set of generators for $\mathcal A$-module $P_k$ in some so-call generic degrees and apply these results to explicitly determine the hit problem for $k=4$.
