Migration and Evolution of giant ExoPlanets (MEEP). III. Twenty-Nine Giant Planets from the TESS Mission

We present the discovery and characterization of 29 hot and warm Jupiter systems transiting bright ($G < 12.8$) FGK stars using TESS data and ground-based photometry and spectroscopy. Through the use of high angular resolution imaging, we discovered three bound stellar companions, named TOI-3988 B, TOI-6171 B, and TOI-7266 B. The planets that we confirmed span an orbital period range of $1.28 - 16.9$ days, a mass range of $0.35 - 8.7$ $\mathrm{M}_{\mathrm{J}}$, and an orbital eccentricity range of $0 - 0.6$, and add to the growing self-consistent sample of hot and warm Jupiter systems detected using TESS and analyzed using the Markov-Chain Monte Carlo code EXOFASTv2. By performing two-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov tests on a set of host star and planetary parameters, we find that this growing self-consistent sample of giant planets has a different distribution of host star masses, surface gravities, and metallicities, compared to the hot Jupiter and warm Jupiter systems in the literature, likely due to the additional constraint on the host star density from the planetary transits included in our global fits. We find that seven of the 29 newly confirmed planets have significant orbital eccentricity, and that one of these, TOI-3365 b, is in a system which likely hosts a massive outer companion. The continued confirmation of hot Jupiter and warm Jupiter systems and the follow-up RV monitoring on these systems to identify outer companions will pave the way for important investigations of giant planet migration.

AT 2016blu: Accretion-Powered Outbursts in a Luminous Blue Variable and Compact Object Binary

We present the first X-ray detection of the supernova (SN) impostor AT 2016blu in NGC 4559. AT 2016blu exhibited 27 detected quasiperiodic (~113 day) outbursts between 2012 and June 2026, presumably triggered by periastron passages in an eccentric binary system in which the primary is a $\gtrsim 33~M_{\odot}$ luminous blue variable (LBV). AT 2016blu was serendipitously observed by Chandra in 2001-2002, prior to its first documented outburst in 2012, but the stacked archival data show no X-ray detection. We monitored the source's visual-wavelength variability around its predicted outburst time and triggered a Chandra Target of Opportunity program in March 2026, obtaining observations with detections over five closely spaced epochs. These data indicate an X-ray luminosity of $\log L_{\rm X} \approx 38.64 \pm 0.11$~erg~s$^{-1}$ and an accretion rate of $\dot{M} \gtrsim 8\times10^{-8}~M_{\odot}~\mathrm{yr^{-1}}$, consistent with the presence of a compact companion. We therefore conclude that AT 2016blu is the first known case of an LBV SN impostor whose outbursts are driven by intermittent accretion onto a compact object. Given that the system consists of a massive star and a compact companion, AT 2016blu is a high-mass X-ray binary, similar to SN 2010da, although the donor star in SN 2010da is a red supergiant.

The use of astronomical data for satellite tracking

The study explored the usage of astronomical observations for the identification and tracking of artificial satellites. Spacecraft streaks on astronomical images are a growing issue for the astronomical community. The increasing number of satellites in the future will only worsen the situation for ground-based optical and radio observations of cosmic objects. In addition, the spacecraft passages often lead to the discarding of the obtained data. In this analysis, we propose an estimation of the usefulness of dedicated astronomical observation for spacecraft monitoring, identification, and deduction of orbital parameters. We use astronomical data from the Astronomical Observatory Meshtitsa (Bulgaria) and the https://www.tycho-tracker.com/ software for the streak analysis. The results are compared with well-known satellite databases, such as https://celestrak.org/. The findings are discussed in the framework of space weather research.
