Neutrino oscillation data versus minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model

We reconsider the minimal supersymmetric SO(10) model, where only one {\bf 10} and one $\bar{\bf 126}$ Higgs multiplets have Yukawa couplings with matter multiplets. The model is generalized to include CP-violating phases, and examined how well its predictions can meet the current neutrino oscillation data. Using the electroweak scale data about six quark masses, three angles and one CP-phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix and three charged-lepton masses and given $\tan β$ (the ratio of vacuum expectation values of a pair of Higgs doublets), we obtain the Pontecorvo-Maki-Nakagawa-Sakata matrix and the ratio, $Δm_\odot^2/Δm_\oplus^2 $, as functions of only one free parameter in the model. In our analysis, one-loop renormalization group equations for the gauge couplings, the Yukawa couplings and the effective dimension-five operator are used to connect the data between the electroweak scale and the grand unification scale. Fixing the free parameter appropriately, we find, for example, $\sin^2 2 θ_{12} \sim 0.72$, $\sin^2 2 θ_{23} \sim 0.90$, $\sin^2 2 θ_{13} \sim 0.16$ and $Δm_\odot^2/Δm_\oplus^2 \sim 0.19$ with $\tan β= 45$, which are in agreement with the current neutrino oscillation data.

Almost No-Scale Supergravity

We construct an explicit 5-dimensional supergravity model that realizes the "no scale" mechanism for supersymmetry breaking with no unstable moduli. Supersymmetry is broken by a constant superpotential localized on a brane, and the radion is stabilized by Casimir energy from supergravity and massive hypermultiplets. If the standard model gauge and matter fields are localized on a brane, then visible sector supersymmetry breaking is dominated by gravity loops and flavor-violating hypermultiplet loops, and gaugino masses are smaller than scalar masses. We present a realistic model in which the the standard model gauge fields are partly localized. In this model visible sector supersymmetry breaking is naturally gaugino mediated, while masses of the gravitino and gravitational moduli are larger than the weak scale.

Alternative Signature of TeV Strings

In string theory, it is well known that any hard scattering amplitude inevitably suffers exponential suppression. We demonstrate that, if the string scale is M_s < 2TeV, this intrinsically stringy behavior leads to a dramatic reduction in the QCD jet production rate with very high transverse momenta p_T > 2TeV at LHC. This suppression is sufficient to be observed in the first year of low-luminosity running. Our prediction is based on the universal behavior of string theory, and therefore is qualitatively model-independent. This signature is alternative and complementary to conventional ones such as Regge resonance (or string ball/black hole) production.

Leptogenesis in models with multi-Higgs bosons

We study the leptogenesis scenario in models with multi-Higgs doublets. It is pointed out that the washing-out process through the effective dimension five interactions, which has not been taken into account seriously in the conventional scenario, can be effective, and the resultant baryon asymmetry can be exponentially suppressed. This fact implies new possible scenario where the observed baryon asymmetry is the remnant of the washed out lepton asymmetry which was originally much larger than the one in the conventional scenario. Our new scenario is applicable to some neutrino mass matrix models which predict too large CP-violating parameter and makes them viable through the washing-out process.

Positively-deflected anomaly mediation

We generalize the so-called ``deflected anomaly mediation'' scenario to the case where threshold corrections of heavy messengers to the sparticle squared-masses are positive. A concrete model realizing this scenario is also presented. The tachyonic slepton problem can be fixed with only a pair of messengers. The resultant sparticle mass spectrum is quite different from that in the conventional deflected anomaly mediation scenario, but is similar to the one in the gauge mediation scenario. The lightest sparticle is mostly B-ino.

Natural mu-term generation in supergravity scenario

We discuss a natural way to generate the mu-term in supergravity scenario. Once the supergravity effects are taken into account, the vacuum expectation values (VEVs) of the heavy fields are in general shifted from the values in the supersymmetric limit. We note that this fact is independent of any Kahler ansatz and the values of the VEV shifts are of the order of the gravitino mass. As an example, an explicit model is presented, in which both of the mu-term and the B-term of the electroweak scale are generated by the VEV shifts through the supergravity effects. This model is a kind of the next to minimal supersymmetric standard model, but there is no light standard model singlet field. Also, we emphasize that our discussion can be naturally applied to the supersymmetric grand unified theory.

Dynamical Doublet-Triplet Higgs Mass Splitting

We propose a new mechanism towards the solution to the doublet-triplet Higgs mass splitting problem in the supersymmetric grand unified theory. Our model is based on the gauge group $SU(5)_H \times SU(5)_{GUT}$, where $SU(5)_H$ and $SU(5)_{GUT}$ are a new strong gauge interaction and the ordinary grand unified gauge group, respectively. The doublet-triplet Higgs mass splitting is realized through the quantum deformation of moduli space caused by the strong $SU(5)_H$ gauge dynamics. The low energy description of our model is given by the minimal supersymmetric standard model.

Vacuum structure of spontaneously broken N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory

We analyze the vacuum structure of spontaneously broken N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory with the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Our theory is based on the gauge group SU(2) \times U(1) with N_f=1,2 massless quark hypermultiplets having the same U(1) charges. In the classical potential, there are degenerate vacua even in the absence of supersymmetry. It is shown that this vacuum degeneracy is smoothed out, once quantum corrections are taken into account. In N_f=1 case, the effective potential is found to be so-called runaway type, and there is neither well-defined vacuum nor local minimum. On the other hand, in N_f=2 case, while there is also the runaway direction in the effective potential, we find the possibility that there appears the local minimum with broken supersymmetry at the degenerate dyon point.

Potential analysis of N=2 SUSY gauge theory with the Fayet-Iliopoulos term

We analyze the vacuum structure of spontaneously broken N=2 supersymmetric gauge theory with the Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Our theory is based on the gauge group SU(2) \times U(1) with N_f=2 massless quark hypermultiplets having the same U(1) charges. In the classical potential, there are degenerate vacua even in the absence of supersymmetry. It is shown that this vacuum degeneracy is smoothed out, once quantum corrections are taken into account. While there is the runaway direction in the effective potential, we found the promising possibility that there appears the local minimum with broken supersymmetry at the degenerate dyon point.

The fate of the B ball

The gauge-mediated SUSY-breaking (GMSB) model needs entropy production at a relatively low temperature in the thermal history of the Universe for the unwanted relics to be diluted. This requires a mechanism for the baryogenesis after the entropy production, and the Affleck and Dine (AD) mechanism is a promising candidate for it. The AD baryogenesis in the GMSB model predicts the existence of the baryonic Q ball, that is the B ball, and this may work as the dark matter in the Universe. In this article, we discuss the stability of the B ball in th presence of baryon-number violating interactions. We find that the evaporation rate increases monotonically with the B-ball charge because the large field value inside the B ball enhances the effect of the baryon-number-violating operators. While there are some difficulties to evaluate the evaporation rate of the B ball, we derive the evaporation time (lifetime) of the B ball for the mass-to-charge ratio $ω_0\gsim 100 \MEV$. The lifetime of the B ball and the distortion of the cosmic ray positron flux and the cosmic background radiation from the B ball evaporation give constraints on the baryon number of the B ball and the interaction, if the B ball is the dark matter. We also discuss some unresolved properties of the B ball.

R-mediation of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking

We propose a simple scenario of the dynamical supersymmetry breaking in four dimensional supergravity theories. The supersymmetry breaking sector is assumed to be completely separated as a sequestered sector from the visible sector, except for the communication by the gravity and U(1)_R gauge interactions, and the supersymmetry breaking is mediated by the superconformal anomaly and U(1)_R gauge interaction. Supersymmetry is dynamically broken by the interplay between the non-perturbative effect of the gauge interaction and Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term of U(1)_R which necessarily exists in supergravity theories with gauged U(1)_R symmetry. We construct an explicit model which gives phenomenologically acceptable mass spectrum of superpartners with vanishing (or very small) cosmological constant.

Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking with Gauged U(1)_R Symmetry

We propose a simple model of dynamical supersymmetry breaking in the context of minimal supergravity with gauged $U(1)_R$ symmetry. The model is based on the gauge group $SU(2) \times U(1)_R$ with three matters. Since the $U(1)_R$ symmetry is gauged, the Fayet-Iliopoulos D-term appears due to the symmetry of supergravity. On the other hand, the superpotential generated dynamically by the SU(2) gauge dynamics leads to run away potential. Since the supersymmetric vacuum condition required by the D-term potential contradicts the one required by the superpotential, supersymmetry is broken. The supersymmetry breaking scale is controlled by the dynamical scale of the SU(2) gauge interaction. We can choose the parameters in our model for vanishing cosmological constant. Our model is phenomenologically viable with the gravitino mass of order 1 TeV or 10 TeV.

Models of Dynamical Supersymmetry Breaking with Gauged $U(1)_R$ Symmetry

We present simple models of dynamical supersymmetry breaking with gauged U(1)_R symmetry. The minimal supersymmetric standard model and supersymmetric SU(5) GUT are considered as the visible sector. The anomaly cancellation conditions for U(1)_R are investigated in detail and simple solutions of the R-charge assignments are found. We show that this scenario of dynamical supersymmetry breaking is phenomenologically viable with the gravitino mass of order 1 TeV or 10 TeV.

Bulk Standard Model in the Randall-Sundrum Background

We discuss issues in an attempt to put the Standard Model (SM) in five-dimensional anti-de Sitter spacetime compactified on $S^1/Z_2$. The recently-proposed approach to the gauge hierarchy problem by using this background geometry, with the SM confined on a boundary, is extended to a situation where (some of) the SM particles reside in the five dimensional bulk. In particular, we find a localization of zero modes of bulk fermions near the boundary with a negative tension. Unlike the compactification with the flat metric, these fermion zero modes couple to Kaluza-Klein (KK) excitations of the SM gauge bosons. Interestingly, only low-lying modes of such KK gauge bosons have non-negligible couplings. Current electroweak precision data give a constraint that the first KK mode be heavier than 9 TeV. We also argue that at least the Higgs field should be confined on the brane to utilize the Randall-Sundrum background as a solution to the gauge hierarchy.

On Effective Theory of Brane World with Small Tension

The five dimensional theory compactified on $S^1$ with two ``branes'' (two domain walls) embedded in it is constructed, based on the field-theoretic mechanism to generate the ``brane''. Some light states localized in the ``brane'' appear in the theory. One is the Nambu-Goldstone boson, which corresponds to the breaking of the translational invariance in the transverse direction of the ``brane''. In addition, if the tension of the ``brane'' is smaller than the fundamental scale of the original theory, it is found that there may exist not only massless states but also some massive states lighter than the fundamental scale in the ``brane''. We analyze the four dimensional effective theory by integrating out the freedom of the fifth dimension. We show that some effective couplings can be explicitly calculated. As one of our results, some effective couplings of the state localized in the ``brane'' to the higher Kaluza-Klein modes in the bulk are found to be suppressed by the width of the ``brane''. The resultant suppression factor can be quantitatively different from the one analyzed by Bando et al. using the Nambu-Goto action, while they are qualitatively the same.

Superheavy Dark Matter and Parametric Resonance

We propose a new scenario to produce the superheavy dark matter based on the inflationary universe. In our scenario, the inflaton couples to both a boson and a stable fermion. Although the fermion is produced by the inflaton decay after inflation, almost energy density of the inflaton is transmitted into the radiation by parametric resonance which causes the explosively copious production of the boson. We show that the fermion produced by the inflaton decay can be the superheavy dark matter, whose abundance in the present universe coincides with the critical density. We also present two explicit models as examples in which our scenario can be realized. One is the softly broken supersymmetric theory. The other is the ``singlet majoron model'' with an assumed neutrino mass matrix. The latter example can simultaneously explain the neutrino oscillation data and the observed baryon asymmetry in the present universe through the leptogenesis scenario.

A Composite Model of Quarks with the `Effective Supersymmetry'

We present a composite model of quarks with `effective supersymmetry'. The model is based on the gauge group $(SU(2)_S \times SU(2)_M) \times (SU(2)_U \times SU(2)_C \times SU(2)_T) \times SU(5)_{SM}$, where $SU(5)_{SM}$ is the standard model gauge group. In the dynamical supersymmetry breaking sector based on the gauge group $SU(2)_S \times SU(2)_M$, supersymmetry is dynamically broken. The preon sector is constructed by the model proposed by Nelson and Strassler. The fermion mass hierarchy among the up-type quarks originates from the $SU(2)_U \times SU(2)_C \times SU(2)_T$ gauge dynamics. The supersymmetry breaking is mediated to the minimal supersymmetric standard model sector by the `preon' superfields which compose the quarks in the first two generations. To obtain an experimentally acceptable mass spectrum, the scalar quarks in the first two generations need masses of order 10 TeV, while the other superpartners need masses less than 1 TeV. Therefore, the mass spectrum in our model is one example of the `effective supersymmetry' model proposed by Cohen, Kaplan and Nelson.

A Simple Model of Gauge Mediated Supersymmetry Breaking with Composite Messenger Fields

We present a simple model of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking with composite messenger fields. Our model is based on the gauge group $Sp(8) \times SU(2)$. By the strong Sp(8) dynamics, supersymmetry is dynamically broken and the composite fields with charges under the standard model gauge group appear at low energy. The $U(1)_R$ symmetry breaking mass terms for the composite fields are generated by the strong SU(2) dynamics. Then, the composite fields play a role of the messenger fields. On the other hand, the theoretical bounds on the parameters in our model are discussed. Especially, the lower bound on the dynamical scale of the $Sp(8) \times SU(2)$ gauge interaction is roughly $10^{15}$ GeV.
