Strong Interaction Physics at the Luminosity Frontier with 22 GeV Electrons at Jefferson Lab

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

On the decay mode $\Lambda_b \to X_s \gamma$

We study the inclusive $H_b \to X_s \gamma$ decay with $H_b$ a beauty baryon, in particular $\Lambda_b$, employing an expansion in the heavy quark mass at $\mathit{O}(m_b^{-3})$ at leading order in $\alpha_s$, keeping the dependence on the hadron spin. For a polarized baryon we compute the distribution $\displaystyle\frac{d^2\Gamma}{dy \, d \cos \theta_P}$, with $y=2E_\gamma/m_b$, $E_\gamma$ the photon energy and $\theta_P$ the angle between the baryon spin vector and the photon momentum in the $H_b$ rest-frame. We discuss the correlation between the baryon and photon polarization, and show that effects of physics beyond the Standard Model can modify the photon polarization asymmetry. We also discuss a method to treat the singular terms in the photon energy spectrum obtained by the OPE.

Semileptonic $B_c$ decays to $P-$wave charmonium and the nature of $\chi_{c1}(3872)$

The hadronic form factors of $B_c$ semileptonic decays to the $P-$wave charmonium 4-plet can be expressed near the zero-recoil point in terms of universal functions, performing a systematic expansion in QCD in the relative velocity of the heavy quarks and in $1/m_Q$. Such functions are independent of the member of the multiplet involved in the transitions. We present the results of an NLO calculation up to $O(1/m_Q^2)$ classifying the universal functions at this order. We work out a set of relations among the form factors of the same mode and of different modes, which should be reproduced by explicit calculations, reducing the hadronic uncertainty affecting such channels. The approach is also helpful to investigate the debated nature of $\chi_{c1}(3872)$, studying the production in $B_c$ semileptonic decays and comparing it to the modes involving the other $2P$ charmonia.

Relations among $B_c \to J/\psi, \eta_c$ form factors

We analyze the form factors parametrizing the $B_c \to J/\psi, \eta_c$ matrix elements of the operators in a generalized low-energy $b \to c$ semileptonic Hamiltonian. We consider an expansion in nonrelativistic QCD, classifying the heavy quark spin symmetry breaking terms and expressing the form factors in terms of universal functions in a selected kinematical range. Using as an input the lattice QCD results for the $B_c \to J/\psi$ matrix element of the SM operator, we obtain information on other form factors. The extrapolation to the full kinematical range is also presented.

Role of $B_c^+ \to B_{s,d}^{(*)} \, \bar \ell \, \nu_\ell$ in the Standard Model and in the search for BSM signals

The decays $B_c^+ \to B_{a} \bar \ell \nu_\ell$ and $B_c^+ \to B_{a}^{*}(\to B_a \gamma) \bar \ell \nu_\ell$, with $a=s,d$ and $\ell=e,\mu$, are studied in the Standard Model (SM) and in the extension based on the low-energy Hamiltonian comprising the full set of dimension-$6$ semileptonic $c \to s,d$ operators with left-handed neutrinos. Tests of $\mu/e$ universality are investigated using such modes. The heavy quark spin symmetry is applied to relate the relevant hadronic matrix elements and to exploit lattice QCD results on $B_c$ form factors. Optimized observables are selected, and the pattern of their correlations is studied to identify the effects of the various operators in the extended low-energy Hamiltonian.

Chaos in a $Q \bar Q$ system at finite temperature and baryon density

Onset of chaos for the holographic dual of a $Q \bar Q$ system at finite temperature and baryon density is studied. We consider a string in the $AdS$ Reissner-Nordstrom background near the black-hole horizon, and investigate small time-dependent perturbations of the static configurations. The proximity to the horizon induces chaos, which is softened increasing the chemical potential. A background geometry including the effect of a dilaton is also examined. The Maldacena, Shenker and Stanford bound on the Lyapunov exponents characterizing the perturbations is satisfied for finite baryon chemical potential and when the dilaton is included in the metric.

Probing New Physics with $\bar B \to \rho(770) \, \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ and $\bar B \to a_1(1260) \, \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$

The $B$ meson semileptonic modes to $\rho(770)$ and $a_1 (1260)$ are useful to pin down possible non Standard Model effects. The 4d differential $\bar B \to \rho(\pi \pi) \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ and $ \bar B \to a_1 (\rho \pi) \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ decay distributions are computed in SM and in extensions involving new Lepton Flavour Universality violating semileptonic $b \to u$ operators. The Large Energy limit for the light meson is also considered for both modes. The new effective couplings are constrained using the available data, and several observables in $\bar B \to \rho(\pi\pi) \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ in which NP effects can be better identified are selected, using the angular coefficient functions. The complementary role of $\bar B \to \rho(\pi \pi) \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ and $\bar B \to a_1 (\rho \pi) \ell^- \bar \nu_\ell$ is discussed.

Configurational Entropy can disentangle conventional hadrons from exotica

We evaluate the Configurational Entropy (CE) for scalar mesons and for $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^+$ baryons in a holographic approach, varying the dimension of boundary theory operators and using the soft-wall dual model of QCD. We find that hybrid and multiquark mesons are characterized by an increasingly large CE. A similar behavior is observed for $J^P=\frac{1}{2}^+$ baryons, where the CE of pentaquarks is larger than for three-quark baryons, for same radial number. Configurational Entropy seems relevant in disentangling conventional hadrons from exotica.

Excited heavy meson decays to light vector mesons: implications for spectroscopy

We analyze strong decays of excited charmed and beauty mesons into a light vector meson, exploiting the effective field theory based on heavy quark (HQ) symmetries for heavy mesons, and on the hidden gauge symmetry to incorporate light vector mesons. HQ symmetries allow to classify the heavy mesons in spin doublets, and to relate decays of excited states. We build effective Lagrangian terms governing the ${\cal H}_i \to P^{(*)} V$ modes, with ${\cal H}_i$ an excited $s$, $p$, $d$ and $f$-wave heavy-light quark meson, $P,\,P^*$ the lowest-lying $J^P=(0^-,\,1^-)$ heavy-light mesons, and V a light vector meson. Predictions are provided for ratios of decay widths that are independent of the strong couplings in the effective Lagrangian terms. A classification of the newly observed heavy-light mesons is proposed.

Investigating thermalization of a strongly interacting non-Abelian plasma

Using gauge/gravity duality methods, we study the relaxation towards equilibrium of strongly interacting non-Abelian matter. We adopt boundary sourcing to drive the system out-of-equilibrium, and analyze the equilibration process through local probes (energy density and pressures) and nonlocal probes (lengths of the geodesics between two boundary points and extremal surfaces having a Wilson loop as contour on the boundary). We also investigate the real-time dissociation of the heavy quarkonium in the out-of-equilibrium plasma. Systematic comparison with the results of a geometry dual to viscous hydrodynamics sheds light on the thermalization process.

Quarkonium dissociation in a far-from-equilibrium holographic setup

The real-time dissociation of the heavy quarkonium in a strongly coupled boost-invariant non-Abelian plasma relaxing towards equilibrium is analyzed in a holographic framework. The effects driving the plasma out of equilibrium are described by boundary quenching, impulsive variations of the boundary metric. Quarkonium is represented by a classical string with endpoints kept close to the boundary. The evolution of the string profile is computed in the time-dependent geometry, and the dissociation time is evaluated for different configurations with respect to the direction of the plasma expansion. Dissociation occurs fastly for the quarkonium placed in the transverse plane.

Holographic Oddballs

The spectrum of the glueball with $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ is computed using different bottom-up holographic models of QCD. The results indicate a lowest-lying state lighter than in the determination by other methods, with mass $m \simeq 2.8$ GeV. The in-medium properties of this gluonium are investigated, and stability against thermal and density effects is compared to other hadronic systems. Production and decay modes are identified, useful for searching the $J^{PC}=0^{--}$ glueball.

On thermalization of a boost-invariant non Abelian plasma

Using a holographic method, we further investigate the relaxation towards the hydrodynamic regime of a boost-invariant non-Abelian plasma taken out-of-equilibrium. In the dual description, the system is driven out-of-equilibrium by boundary sourcing, a deformation of the boundary metric, as proposed by Chesler and Yaffe. The effects of several deformation profiles on the bulk geometry are investigated by the analysis of the corresponding solutions of the Einstein equations. The time of restoration of the hydrodynamic regime is investigated: setting the effective temperature of the system at the end of the boundary quenching to $T_{eff}(\tau^*)=500$ MeV, the hydrodynamic regime is reached after a lapse of time of ${\cal O}$(1 fm/c).

The Physics of the B Factories

This work is on the Physics of the B Factories. Part A of this book contains a brief description of the SLAC and KEK B Factories as well as their detectors, BaBar and Belle, and data taking related issues. Part B discusses tools and methods used by the experiments in order to obtain results. The results themselves can be found in Part C. Please note that version 3 on the archive is the auxiliary version of the Physics of the B Factories book. This uses the notation alpha, beta, gamma for the angles of the Unitarity Triangle. The nominal version uses the notation phi_1, phi_2 and phi_3. Please cite this work as Eur. Phys. J. C74 (2014) 3026.

Nuclear Structure Functions at Low-$x$ in a Holographic Approach

Nuclear effects in deep inelastic scattering at low$-x$ are phenomenologically described changing the typical dynamical and/or kinematical scales characterizing the free nucleon case. In a holographic approach, this rescaling is an analytical property of the computed structure function $F_2(x,Q^2)$. This function is given by the sum of a conformal term and of a contribution due to quark confinement, depending on IR hard-wall parameter $z_0$ and on the mean square distances, related to a parameter $Q^\prime$, among quarks and gluons in the target. The holographic structure function per nucleon in a nucleus $A$ is evaluated showing that a rescaling of the typical nucleon size, $z_0$ and $Q^\prime$, due to nuclear binding, can be reabsorbed in a $Q^2$-rescaling scheme. The difference between neutron and proton structure functions and the effects of the longitudinal structure functions can also be taken into account. The obtained theoretical results favourably compare with the experimental data.

Nuclear Shadowing in the Holographic Framework

The nucleon structure function $F_2^N$ computed in a holographic framework can be used to describe nuclear deep inelastic scattering effects provided that a rescaling of the $Q^2$ momentum and of the IR hard-wall parameter $z_0$ is made. The ratios $R_A=F_2^A/F_2^N$ can be obtained in terms of a single rescaling parameter $\lambda_A$ for each nucleus. The resulting ratios agree with experiment in a wide range of the shadowing region.

New meson spectroscopy with open charm and beauty

All the available experimental information on open charm and beauty mesons is used to classify the observed states in heavy quark doublets. The masses of some of the still unobserved states are predicted, in particular in the beauty sector. Adopting an effective Lagrangian approach based on the heavy quark and chiral symmetry, individual decay rates and ratios of branching fractions are computed, with results useful to assign the quantum numbers to recently observed charmed states which still need to be properly classified. Implications and predictions for the corresponding beauty mesons are provided. The experimental results are already copious, and are expected to grow up thanks to the experiments at the LHC and to the future high-luminosity flavour and $p-\bar p$ facilities.

Holography, chiral Lagrangian and form factor relations

We derive all the O(p^6) Chiral Perturbation Theory low-energy constants from a class of gravity dual models of QCD described by the Yang-Mills and Chern-Simons Lagrangian terms, with the chiral symmetry broken through boundary conditions in the infrared. All the constants of the odd intrinsic parity sector are universally determined by those at O(p^4) in the even sector, together with an extra resonance term. A few relations for the even sector couplings are also extracted. Our estimates reasonably agree with the few available O(p^6) determinations from alternative phenomenological analyses. Some of the relations between low-energy constants are the manifestation, at large distances, of universal relations that we find between form factors in the even and odd sectors, e.g., between the gamma*->pi pi and pi->gamma gamma* matrix elements.
