Performance Evaluation of a High-Granularity LYSO-SiPM-Based Position-Sensitive Detector for a One-Shot Gamma-Scanning System with Sub-Millimeter Spatial Resolution

A compact position-sensitive {\gamma}-detector based on a thin monolithic LYSO crystal and a 96-channel SiPM array is developed for the spatial characterization and calibration of segmented {\gamma}-ray detector systems used in nuclear-physics experiments. The detector is designed to provide localized irradiation and rapid two-dimensional response mapping. A 7 cm diameter and 3 mm thick LYSO crystal is optically coupled to the SiPM array, and the position of the incident {\gamma}-ray interaction is reconstructed from the relative scintillation-light signals collected by neighboring SiPM channels. An asymmetry-based charge-sharing method is employed to determine the interaction position from the spatial distribution of the detected scintillation light. Detailed GEANT4 simulations, including optical photon transport, were performed to investigate the detector response and estimate its intrinsic spatial resolution. The simulations predict a spatial resolution of approximately 0.5 mm for 60 keV and 511 keV {\gamma}-rays under idealized conditions. A prototype detector was developed and experimentally characterized using coincidence measurements with the {\gamma}-scanning facility at GSI, Germany. The experimental measurements demonstrate a spatial resolution better than 1 mm in the central detector region, while the position-dependent response and degradation near the detector boundaries are investigated. The experimental results are compared with GEANT4 predictions to identify the contributions of optical photon transport, charge sharing, and detector geometry to the measured spatial resolution. The developed detector provides a compact solution for the three-dimensional characterization of highly segmented {\gamma}-ray detector arrays in nuclear physics experiments.

High accuracy synchrotron radiation interferometry with relativistic electrons

A high-precision hypernuclear experiment has been performed at the Mainz Microtron (MAMI) to determine the hypertriton {\Lambda} binding energy via decay-pion spectroscopy. A key element of this measurement is an accurate calibration of the magnetic spectrometers with the MAMI beam. For such an absolute calibration with small statistical and systematic uncertainties the undulator light interference method will be applied. In this contribution the basic principle of this method is discussed and the analysis status of the measured synchrotron radiation spectra is presented

Low-$Q^2$ elastic electron-proton scattering using a gas jet target

In this paper, we describe an experiment measuring low-$Q^2$ elastic electron-proton scattering using a newly developed cryogenic supersonic gas jet target in the A1 three-spectrometer facility at the Mainz Microtron. We measured the proton electric form factor within the four-momentum transfer range of $0.01\le Q^2 \le 0.045(\text{GeV/c})^2$. The experiment showed consistent results with the existing measurements. The data we collected demonstrated the feasibility of the gas jet target and the potential of future scattering experiments using high-resolution spectrometers with this gas jet target.

Measurement of the {\alpha}-particle monopole transition form factor challenges theory: a low-energy puzzle for nuclear forces?

We perform a systematic study of the $\alpha$-particle excitation from its ground state $0_1^+$ to the $0_2^+$ resonance. The so-called monopole transition form factor is investigated via an electron scattering experiment in a broad $Q^2$-range (from $0.5$ to $5.0$ fm$^{-2}$). The precision of the new data dramatically superseeds that of older sets of data, each covering only a portion of the $Q^2$-range. The new data allow the determination of two coefficients in a low-momentum expansion leading to a new puzzle. By confronting experiment to state-of-the-art theoretical calculations we observe that modern nuclear forces, including those derived within chiral effective field theory which are well tested on a variety of observables, fail to reproduce the excitation of the $\alpha$-particle.

Operation and characterization of a windowless gas jet target in high-intensity electron beams

A cryogenic supersonic gas jet target was developed for the MAGIX experiment at the high-intensity electron accelerator MESA. It will be operated as an internal, windowless target in the energy-recovering recirculation arc of the accelerator with different target gases, e.g., hydrogen, deuterium, helium, oxygen, argon, or xenon. Detailed studies have been carried out at the existing A1 multi-spectrometer facility at the electron accelerator MAMI. This paper focuses on the developed handling procedures and diagnostic tools, and on the performance of the gas jet target under beam conditions. Considering the special features of this type of target, it proves to be well suited for a new generation of high-precision electron scattering experiments at high-intensity electron accelerators.

Beam-Normal Single Spin Asymmetry in Elastic Electron Scattering off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr

We report on a new measurement of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{n}}$ in the elastic scattering of 570 MeV transversely polarized electrons off $^{28}$Si and $^{90}$Zr at $Q^{2}=0.04\, \mathrm{GeV}^2/c^2$. The studied kinematics allow for a comprehensive comparison with former results on $^{12}$C. No significant mass dependence of the beam-normal single spin asymmetry is observed in the mass regime from $^{12}$C to $^{90}$Zr.

Precision beam energy measurement by undulator radiation at MAMI

A novel interferometric method for absolute beam energy measurement is under development at MAMI. At the moment, the method is tested and optimized at an energy of 195 MeV. Despite the very small statistical uncertainty of the method, systematic effects have limited the overall accuracy. Recently, a measurement has been performed dedicated to the evaluation of these effects. This report comprises a description of the method and results of the recent data taking period.

Novel optical interferometry of synchrotron radiation for absolute electron beam energy measurements

A novel interferometric method is presented for the measurement of the absolute energy of electron beams. In the year 2016, a pioneering experiment was performed using a 195 MeV beam of the Mainz Microtron (MAMI). The experimental setup consisted of two collinear magnetic undulators as sources of coherent optical synchrotron light and a high-resolving grating monochromator. Beam energy measurements required the variation of the relative undulator distance in the decimeter range and the analysis of the intensity oscillation length in the interference spectrum. A statistical precision of 1 keV was achieved in 1 hour of data taking, while systematic uncertainties of 700 keV were present in the experiment. These developments aim for a relative precision of $10^{-5}$ in the absolute momentum calibrations of spectrometers and high-precision hypernuclear experiments. Other electron accelerators with beam energies in this regime such as the Mainz Energy Recovering Superconducting Accelerator (MESA) might benefit from this new method.

Vertical Beam Polarization at MAMI

For the first time a vertically polarized electron beam has been used for physics experiments at MAMI in the energy range between 180 and 855 MeV. The beam-normal single-spin asymmetry $A_{\mathrm{n}}$, which is a direct probe of higher-order photon exchange beyond the first Born approximation, has been measured in the reaction $^{12}\mathrm C(\vec e,e')^{12}\mathrm C$. Vertical polarization orientation was necessary to measure this asymmetry with the existing experimental setup. In this paper we describe the procedure to orient the electron polarization vector vertically, and the concept of determining both its magnitude and orientation with the available setup. A sophisticated method has been developed to overcome the lack of a polarimeter setup sensitive to the vertical polarization component.

Exact results on the Kondo-lattice magnetic polaron

In this work we revise the theory of one electron in a ferromagnetically saturated local moment system interacting via a Kondo-like exchange interaction. The complete eigenstates for the finite lattice are derived. It is then shown, that parts of these states lose their norm in the limit of an infinite lattice. The correct (scattering) eigenstates are calculated in this limit. The time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation is solved for arbitrary initial conditions and the connection to the down-electron Green's function and the scattering states is worked out. A detailed analysis of the down-electron decay dynamics is given.
