The $v^{1/3}_{3}/v^{1/2}_{2}$ ratio in PbAu collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}} = $ 17.3 GeV: a hint of a hydrodynamic behavior

The Fourier harmonics, $v_2$ and $v_3$ of negative pions are measured at center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm{NN}}}$= 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERES/NA45 experiment at the CERN SPS in 0--30\% central PbAu collisions with a mean centrality of 5.5\%. The analysis is performed in two centrality bins as a function of the transverse momentum $\mathrm{p_{\mathrm{T}}}$ from 0.05 GeV/$c$ to more than 2 GeV/$c$. This is the first measurement of the $v^{1/3}_{3}/v^{1/2}_{2}$ ratio as a function of transverse momentum at SPS energies, that reveals, independently of the hydrodynamic models, hydrodynamic behavior of the formed system. For $\mathrm{p_{\mathrm{T}}}$ above 0.5 GeV/$c$, the ratio is nearly flat in accordance with the hydrodynamic prediction and as previously observed by the ATLAS and ALICE experiments at the much higher LHC energies. The results are also compared with the SMASH-vHLLE hybrid model predictions, as well as with the SMASH model applied alone.

Elliptic flow of charged pions, protons and strange particles emitted in Pb+Au collisions at top SPS energy

Differential elliptic flow spectra v2(pT) of \pi-, K0short, p, \Lambda have been measured at \sqrt(s NN)= 17.3 GeV around midrapidity by the CERN-CERES/NA45 experiment in mid-central Pb+Au collisions (10% of \sigma(geo)). The pT range extends from about 0.1 GeV/c (0.55 GeV/c for \Lambda) to more than 2 GeV/c. Protons below 0.4 GeV/c are directly identified by dE/dx. At higher pT, proton elliptic flow v2(pT) is derived as a constituent, besides \pi+ and K+, of the elliptic flow of positive pion candidates. The retrieval requires additional inputs: (i) of the particle composition, and (ii) of v2(pT) of positive pions. For (i), particle ratios obtained by NA49 were adapted to CERES conditions; for (ii), the measured v2(pT) of negative pions is substituted, assuming \pi+ and \pi- elliptic flow magnitudes to be sufficiently close. The v2(pT) spectra are compared to ideal-hydrodynamics calculations. In synopsis of the series \pi- - K0short - p - \Lambda, flow magnitudes are seen to fall with decreasing pT progressively even below hydro calculations with early kinetic freeze-out (Tf= 160 MeV) leaving not much time for hadronic evolution. The proton v2(pT) data show a downward swing towards low pT with excursions into negative v2 values. The pion-flow isospin asymmetry observed recently by STAR at RHIC, invalidating in principle our working assumption, is found in its impact on proton flow bracketed from above by the direct proton flow data, and not to alter any of our conclusions. Results are discussed in perspective of recent viscous dynamics studies which focus on late hadronic stages.

Azimuthal dependence of pion source radii in Pb+Au collisions at 158 A GeV

We present results of a two-pion correlation analysis performed with the Au+Pb collision data collected by the upgraded CERES experiment in the fall of 2000. The analysis was done in bins of the reaction centrality and the pion azimuthal emission angle with respect to the reaction plane. The pion source, deduced from the data, is slightly elongated in the direction perpendicular to the reaction plane, similarly as was observed at the AGS and at RHIC.

Gas Purity effect on GEM Performance in He and Ne at Low Temperatures

The performance of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) in gaseous He, Ne, He+H2 and Ne+H2 was studied at temperatures in the range of 3-293 K. This paper reports on previously published measurements and additional studies on the effects of the purity of the gases in which the GEM performance is evaluated. In He, at temperatures between 77 and 293 K, triple-GEM structures operate at rather high gains, exceeding 1000. There is an indication that this high gain is achieved through the Penning effect as a result of impurities in the gas. At lower temperatures the gain-voltage characteristics are significantly modified probably due to the freeze-out of these impurities. Double-GEM and single-GEM structures can operate down to 3 K at gains reaching only several tens at a gas density of about 0.5 g/l; at higher densities the maximum gain drops further. In Ne, the maximum gain also drops at cryogenic temperatures. The gain drop in Ne at low temperatures can be re-established in Penning mixtures of Ne+H2: very high gains, exceeding 104, have been obtained in these mixtures at 30-77 K, at a density of 9.2 g/l which corresponds to saturated Ne vapor density at 27 K. The addition of small amounts of H2 in He also re-establishes large GEM gains above 30 K but no gain was observed in He+H2 at 4 K and a density of 1.7 g/l (corresponding to roughly one-tenth of the saturated vapor density). These studies are, in part, being pursued in the development of two-phase He and Ne detectors for solar neutrino detection.

First observation of the decay K+ -> e+ nu mu+ mu-

Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven AGS has observed the decay K^+ -> e^+ nu mu^+ mu^-. The branching ratio extracted is (1.72 +/- 0.37(stat) +/- 0.17(syst) +/- 0.19(model)) x 10^{-8} where the third term in the error results from the use of a model to extrapolate into a kinematic region dominated by background.

An Improved upper limit on the decay K^+ -> pi^+ mu^+ e^-

Based on results of a search for the lepton-family-number-violating decay $K^+ \to π^+μ^+ e^-$ with data collected by experiment E865 at the Alternating Gradient Synchrotron of Brookhaven National Laboratory, we place an upper limit on the branching ratio at $2.1 \times 10^{-11}$ (90% C.L.). Combining the results with earlier E865 data and those of a previous experiment, E777, an upper limit on the branching ratio of $1.3 \times 10^{-11}$ (90% C.L.) is obtained.

e+e--pair production in Pb-Au collisions at 158 GeV per nucleon

We present the combined results on electron-pair production in 158 GeV/n {Pb-Au} ($\sqrt{s}$= 17.2 GeV) collisions taken at the CERN SPS in 1995 and 1996, and give a detailed account of the data analysis. The enhancement over the reference of neutral meson decays amounts to a factor of 2.31$\pm0.19 (stat.)\pm0.55 (syst.)\pm0.69 (decays)$ for semi-central collisions (28% $\sigma/\sigma_{geo}$) when yields are integrated over $m>$ 200 MeV/$c^2$ in invariant mass. The measured yield, its stronger-than-linear scaling with $N_{ch}$, and the dominance of low pair $p_t$ strongly suggest an interpretation as {\it thermal radiation} from pion annihilation in the hadronic fireball. The shape of the excess centring at $m\approx$ 500 MeV/$c^2$, however, cannot be described without strong medium modifications of the $\rho$ meson. The results are put into perspective by comparison to predictions from Brown-Rho scaling governed by chiral symmetry restoration, and from the spectral-function many-body treatment in which the approach to the phase boundary is less explicit.

GEM operation in helium and neon at low temperatures

We study the performance of Gas Electron Multipliers (GEMs) in gaseous He, Ne and Ne+H2 at temperatures in the range of 2.6-293 K. In He, at temperatures between 62 and 293 K, the triple-GEM structures often operate at rather high gains, exceeding 1000. There is an indication that this high gain is achieved by Penning effect in the gas impurities released by outgassing. At lower temperatures the gain-voltage characteristics are significantly modified probably due to the freeze-out of impurities. In particular, the double-GEM and single-GEM structures can operate down to 2.6 K at gains reaching only several tens at a gas density of about 0.5 g/l; at higher densities the maximum gain drops further. In Ne, the maximum gain also drops at cryogenic temperatures. The gain drop in Ne at low temperatures can be reestablished in Penning mixtures of Ne+H2: very high gains, exceeding 10000, have been obtained in these mixtures at 50-60 K, at a density of 9.2 g/l corresponding to that of saturated Ne vapor near 27 K. The results obtained are relevant in the fields of two-phase He and Ne detectors for solar neutrino detection and electron avalanching at low temperatures.

New, high statistics measurement of the K+ -> pi0 e+ nu (Ke3) branching ratio

E865 at the Brookhaven National Laboratory AGS collected about 70,000 K+(e3) events with the purpose of measuring the relative K+(e3) branching ratio. The pi0 in all the decays was detected using the e+e- pair from pi0 -> e+e-gamma decay and no photons were required. Using the Particle Data Group branching ratios for the normalization decays we obtain BR(K+(e3(gamma))=(5.13+/-0.02(stat)+/-0.09(sys)+/-0.04(norm))%, where $K+(e3(gamma)) includes the effect of virtual and real photons. This result is 2.3 sigma higher than the current Particle Data Group value. The implications of this result for the $V_{us}$ element of the CKM matrix, and the matrix's unitarity are discussed.

High statistics measurement of Ke4 decay properties

We report experimental details and results of a new measurement of the decay K+ -> pi+pi-e+nue (Ke4}. A sample of more than 400,000 Ke4 events with low background has been collected by Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven Alternate Gradient Synchrotron. From these data, the branching ratio (4.11+-0.01+-0.11)*10**(-5) and the pi-pi invariant mass dependence of the form factors F, G, and H of the weak hadronic current as well as the phase shift difference delta00-delta11 for pi-pi-scattering were extracted. Using constraints based on analyticity and chiral symmetry, a new value with considerably improved accuracy for the s-wave pi-pi-scattering length a00 has been obtained also: a00=0.216+-0.013 (stat.)+-0.002(syst.)+-0.002(theor.).

Experiment 865 at the Brookhaven AGS obtained 410 K+ -> e+ nu e+e- and 2679 K+ -> mu+ nu e+e- events including 10% and 19% background. The branching ratios were measured to be (2.48+-0.14(stat.)+-0.14(syst.))x10^-8 (m_ee>150 MeV) and (7.06+-0.16+-0.26)x10^-8 (m_ee>145 MeV), respectively. Results for the decay form factors are presented.

A new measurement of K+(e4) decay and the s-wave pi-pi-scattering length a00

A sample of 400000 events from the decay K+->pi+pi-e+nu(e)(K(e4)) has been collected in experiment E865 at the Brookhaven AGS. The analysis of these data yields new measurements of the K(e4) branching ratio (4.11+-0.01+-0.11)*10**(-5)), the s-wave pi-pi scattering length a00=0.228+-0.012+-0.003, and the form factors F, G, and H of the hadronic current and their dependence on the invariant pi-pi mass.

Search for Lepton Flavor Violation in $K^+$ Decays

A search for lepton flavor violating decays, \kmmp, \keep, \kpem, \kmep and \pizem, was performed using the data collected in E865 at the Brookhaven Alternating Gradient Synchrotron. No signal was found in any of the decay modes. At the 90% confidence level, the branching ratios are less than $3.0\times10^{-9}$, $6.4\times10^{-10}$, $5.2\times10^{-10}$, $5.0\times10^{-10}$ and $3.4\times10^{-9}$ respectively.

An Improved Limit on the Rate Of Decay K+ -> pi+ mu+ e-

The experiment E865 at BNL places an upper limit on the branching ratio for the decay K+ -> pi+ mu+ e- of 3.9x10^-11 (90% C.L.). Along with with other results this yields a combined upper limit on this branching ratio of 2.8x10^-11. A new upper limit on the branching ratio for pi0 -> mu+ e- of 3.8x10^-10 (90% C.L.) is also established. The experiment and analysis are described.

A New Measurement of the Rare Decay $K^+\to π^+ μ^+ μ^-$

More than 400 $K^{+}\toπ^{+}μ^+μ^-$ events were observed in a rare $K^+$ decay experiment at the AGS. Normalized to the $K^{+}\toπ^{+}π^+π^-$ decay, the branching ratio is determined to be $(9.22 \pm 0.60 (stat) \pm 0.49 (syst))\times 10^{-8}$. This branching ratio and the $μμ$ mass spectrum is in very good agreement with the measurement of the $K^{+}\toπ^{+}e^+e^-$ decay, but deviates significantly from the previous measurement.

Muon Collider Design

Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV high luminosity \mu^+ \mu^- colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Detector background, polarization, and nonstandard operating conditions are discussed.
