Soft Magnons in Anisotropic Ferromagnets

We discuss spin-wave transport in anisotropic ferromagnets with an emphasis on the zeroes of the band edges as a function of a magnetic field. An associated divergence of the magnon spin should be observable by enhanced magnon conductivities in non-local experiments, especially in two-dimensional ferromagnets.

A Perspective on Ferrons

The duality between electric and magnetic dipoles in electromagnetism only partly applies to condensed matter. In particular, the elementary excitations of the magnetic and ferroelectric orders, namely magnons and ferrons, respectively, have received asymmetric attention from the condensed matter community in the past. In this perspective, we introduce and summarize the current state of the budding field of "ferronics" and speculate about its potential applications in thermal, information, and communication technology.

VFTS 243 as predicted by the BPASS fiducial models

The recent discovery of an unambiguous quiescent BH and main sequence O star companion in VFTS 243 opens the door to new constraints on theoretical stellar evolution and population models looking to reproduce the progenitors of black hole - black hole binaries. Here we show that the Binary Population and Spectral Synthesis fiducial models (BPASSv2.2.1) natively predict VFTS243-like systems: We find that VFTS 243 likely originated from a binary system in a about 15 day orbit with primary mass ranging from 40 to 50 M$_{\odot}$ and secondary star with initial mass 24-25M$_{\odot}$. Additionally we find that the death of the primary star must have resulted in a low energy explosion E < 10$^{50}$ ergs. With a uniform prior we find that the kick velocity of the new-born black hole was <10 km/s. The very low eccentricity reported for VFTS 243 and the subsequent conclusion by the authors that the SN kick must have been very small is in line with the peak in the posterior distribution between 0 and 5 km/s found from our numerical simulations performed with a uniform prior. Finally, the reduced Hobbs kick distribution commonly used in black hole population synthesis is strongly disfavoured.

Light-induced anomalous Hall effect in massless Dirac fermion systems and topological insulators with dissipation

Employing the quantum Liouville equation with phenomenological dissipation, we investigate the transport properties of massless and massive Dirac fermion systems that mimics graphene and topological insulators, respectively. The massless Dirac fermion system does not show an intrinsic Hall effect, but it shows a Hall current under the presence of circularly-polarized laser fields as a nature of a optically-driven nonequilibrium state. Based on the microscopic analysis, we find that the light-induced Hall effect mainly originates from the imbalance of photocarrier distribution in momentum space although the emergent Floquet-Berry curvature also has a non-zero contribution. We further compute the Hall transport property of the massive Dirac fermion system with an intrinsic Hall effect in order to investigate the interplay of the intrinsic topological contribution and the extrinsic light-induced population contribution. As a result, we find that the contribution from the photocarrier population imbalance becomes significant in the strong field regime and it overcomes the intrinsic contribution. This finding clearly demonstrates that intrinsic transport properties of materials can be overwritten by external driving and may open a way to ultrafast optical-control of transport properties of materials.

Microscopic theory for the light-induced anomalous Hall effect in graphene

We employ a quantum Liouville equation with relaxation to model the recently observed anomalous Hall effect in graphene irradiated by an ultrafast pulse of circularly polarized light. In the weak-field regime, we demonstrate that the Hall effect originates from an asymmetric population of photocarriers in the Dirac bands. By contrast, in the strong-field regime, the system is driven into a non-equilibrium steady state that is well-described by topologically non-trivial Floquet-Bloch bands. Here, the anomalous Hall current originates from the combination of a population imbalance in these dressed bands together with a smaller anomalous velocity contribution arising from their Berry curvature. This robust and general finding enables the simulation of electrical transport from light-induced Floquet-Bloch bands in an experimentally relevant parameter regime and creates a pathway to designing ultrafast quantum devices with Floquet-engineered transport properties.

Magnon Valves Based on YIG/NiO/YIG All-Insulating Magnon Junctions

As an alternative angular momentum carrier, magnons or spin waves can be utilized to encode information and breed magnon-based circuits with ultralow power consumption and non-Boolean data processing capability. In order to construct such a circuit, it is indispensable to design some electronic components with both long magnon decay and coherence length and effective control over magnon transport. Here we show that an all-insulating magnon junctions composed by a magnetic insulator (MI1)/antiferromagnetic insulator (AFI)/magnetic insulator (MI2) sandwich (Y3Fe5O12/NiO/Y3Fe5O12) can completely turn a thermogradient-induced magnon current on or off as the two Y3Fe5O12 layers are aligned parallel or anti-parallel. The magnon decay length in NiO is about 3.5~4.5 nm between 100 K and 200 K for thermally activated magnons. The insulating magnon valve (magnon junction), as a basic building block, possibly shed light on the naissance of efficient magnon-based circuits, including non-Boolean logic, memory, diode, transistors, magnon waveguide and switches with sizable on-off ratios.

The Chromo-Dielectric Soliton Model: Quark Self Energy and Hadron Bags

The chromo-dielectric soliton model (CDM) is Lorentz- and chirally-invariant. It has been demonstrated to exhibit dynamical chiral symmetry breaking and spatial confinement in the locally uniform approximation. We here study the full nonlocal quark self energy in a color-dielectric medium modeled by a two parameter Fermi function. Here color confinement is manifest. The self energy thus obtained is used to calculate quark wave functions in the medium which, in turn, are used to calculate the nucleon and pion masses in the one gluon exchange approximation. The nucleon mass is fixed to its empirical value using scaling arguments; the pion mass (for massless current quarks) turns out to be small but non-zero, depending on the model parameters.
