Exploring Visual Access and Proactive AI Tutoring for Handwritten Mathematics

Handwritten work captures mathematical reasoning that learners may not express in typed or voice-dictated messages. We built a multimodal AI tutoring platform in which a phone camera gives the tutor a live view of learners' work on paper. In a randomized online study, 117 adults solved calculus problems with Text-Reactive, Visual-Reactive, or Visual-Proactive assistance. Analysis of 2,140 tutor messages showed that visual access shifted assistance toward checking ongoing work, while proactivity enhanced error identification and directive hints. Learners valued feedback grounded in their writing; those who received proactive help rated it as supportive, and about a third wanted it more often. These findings inform when tutors should intervene and what they should address. We release the platform, prompts, and instruments, together with 255,984 timestamped images of handwritten work linked to tutoring conversations, intervention decisions, and learning outcomes, to support multimodal tutoring systems that preserve the affordances of handwritten work while providing adaptive feedback.

When Thinking Before Retrieval Hurts: TraceBound Diagnostics for Adaptive Knowledge-Graph Retrieval

Adaptive retrieval promises to make knowledge-graph question answering more robust by letting a controller search, inspect neighborhoods, revise actions, and stop when evidence is sufficient. We study this premise by introducing TraceBound, a lightweight profile- and trace-conditioned diagnostic protocol for an ARK-style retriever on text-rich knowledge graphs. TraceBound exposes a compact query profile before retrieval, issues short trace hints after observable failure symptoms, and logs trajectory counters, while keeping graph data, tools, gold labels, and ranking metrics fixed. Across STaRK validation and held-out subsets, the added conditioning improves inspectability but consistently reduces retrieval quality under open-weight controllers. Paired trajectory analysis localizes the degradation to repeated calls, zero-result calls, and misallocated exploration budget, while stricter interaction budgets shorten trajectories without repairing the policy. The result diagnoses the common failure mode in that "thinking before retrieval'' must be evaluated as a control problem over action selection, not as a prompt-format change.

Context Aware Grounded Teacher for Source Free Object Detection

Source-free object detection (SFOD) faces persistent challenges due to class imbalance-driven context bias and instability in teacher-student training under noisy pseudo-labels. Existing techniques tend to ignore context bias and class-imbalance shifts, especially in medical data. To tackle this, we propose Grounded Teacher (GT), a bias-aware source-free framework that grounds the teacher model through relational and semantic regularization. To explicitly model directional confusion between classes, GT introduces a Relational Context Module (RCM) that maintains an exponential moving average (EMA) estimate of cross-domain contextual bias. Building upon this, a Semantic Augmentation (SA) strategy selectively augments minority and confusable classes through adaptive MixUp in both source-similar and source-dissimilar target regions, improving minority recall without overfitting dominant categories. To stabilize learning under biased pseudo-labels, we design a Semantic-Aware Loss (SAL) that applies diagonally normalized weights, preventing gradient explosion while emphasizing minority-majority corrections. Additionally, a frozen Expert branch derived from large vision foundation models (LVFMs) serves as a supervisory reference during training, refining pseudo-label quality without adding inference overhead. GT's behavior-driven bias quantification makes it broadly applicable across domains without relying on dataset priors. Evaluations on Cityscapes-to-Foggy (50.8 mAP) and medical transfers (+5.9 AP50 on DDSM-to-INBreast) show consistent gains and improved minority-class detection, with less than 12\% additional training cost.
