Dynamic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch-Slonczewski equations for spintronics

The atomistic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is challenged when modeling spintronic devices where Joule heating is significant, due to its core assumption of a constant magnetization magnitude. Based on a statistical framework that treats the magnetization magnitude as a dynamic variable coupled to a thermal bath, we derive a dynamic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch-Slonczewski set of equations for torques, that captures the transient, heating-induced demagnetization that occurs during high-current operation. Integrating these dynamic equations and comparing them to their stochastic equivalents reveals that both the energy landscape and switching dynamics in high-anisotropy systems are similarly modified. This approach yields accurate and accelerated predictions of critical currents and switching times.

Ultrafast dynamics of moments in bulk ferromagnets

A robust and efficient model for investigating the ultrafast dynamics of magnetic materials excited by laser pulses has been created, integrating dynamic Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch equations with a quantum thermostat and a two-temperature model. The model has been successfully applied to three archetypal materials in the literature: nickel, cobalt, and iron. Additionally, analysis of the ultrafast dynamic susceptibility tensor indicates that off-diagonal components display specific features depending on whether a continuous external magnetic field is present.

Path integral spin dynamics for quantum paramagnets

A path integral method, combined with atomistic spin dynamics simulations, has been developed to calculate thermal quantum expectation values using a classical approach. In this study, we show how to treat Hamiltonians with non-linear terms, that are relevant for describing uniaxial anisotropies and mechanical constraints. These interactions can be expressed solely through quadratic terms of the spin operator along one axis, that can be identified with the quantisation axis.

Emerging magnetic nutation

Nutation has been recognized as of great significance for spintronics; but justifying its presence has proven to be a hard problem. In this paper we show that nutation can be understood as emerging from a systematic expansion of a kernel that describes the history of the interaction of a magnetic moment with a bath of colored noise. The parameter of the expansion is the ratio of the colored noise timescale to the precession period. In the process we obtain the Gilbert damping from the same expansion. We recover the known results, when the coefficients of the two terms are proportional to one another, in the white noise limit; and show how colored noise leads to situations where this simple relation breaks down, but what replaces it can be understood by the appropriate generalization of the fluctuation--dissipation theorem. Numerical simulations of the stochastic equations support the analytic approach. In particular we find that the equilibration time is about an order of magnitude longer than the timescale set by the colored noise for a wide range of values of the latter and we can identify the presence of nutation in the non-uniform way the magnetization approaches equilibrium.

Spin dynamics from a constrained magnetic Tight-Binding model

A dynamics of the precession of coupled atomic moments in the tight-binding (TB) approximation is presented. By implementing an angular penalty functional in the energy that captures the magnetic effective fields self-consistently, the motion of the orientation of the local magnetic moments is observed faster than the variation of their magnitudes. This allows the computation of the effective atomic magnetic fields that are found consistent with the Heisenberg's exchange interaction, by comparison with classical atomistic spin dynamics on Fe, Co and Ni magnetic clusters.

Ultrafast antiferromagnetic switching in NiO induced by spin transfer torques

NiO is a prototypical antiferromagnet with a characteristic resonance frequency in the THz range. From atomistic spin dynamics simulations that take into account the crystallographic structure of NiO, and in particular a magnetic anisotropy respecting its symmetry, we describe antiferromagnetic switching at THz frequency by a spin transfer torque mechanism. Sub-picosecond S-state switching between the six allowed stable spin directions is found for reasonably achievable spin currents, like those generated by laser induced ultrafast demagnetization. A simple procedure for picosecond writing of a six-state memory is described, thus opening the possibility to speed up current logic of electronic devices by several orders of magnitude.

Dynamic magnetostriction for antiferromagnets

In this paper we study the switching properties of the dynamics of magnetic moments, that interact with an elastic medium. To do so we construct a Hamiltonian framework, that can take into account the dynamics in phase space of the variables that describe the magnetic moments in a consistent way. It is convenient to describe the magnetic moments as bilinears of anticommuting variables that are their own conjugates. However, we show how it is possible to avoid having to deal directly with the anticommuting variables themselves, only using them to deduce non-trivial constraints on the magnetoelastic couplings. We construct the appropriate Poisson bracket and a geometric integration scheme, that is symplectic in the extended phase space and that allows us to study the switching properties of the magnetization, that are relevant for applications, for the case of a toy model for antiferromagnetic NiO, under external stresses. In the absence of magnetoelastic coupling, we recover the results reported in the literature and in our previous studies. In the presence of the magnetoelastic coupling, the characteristic oscillations of the mechanical system have repercussions on the N\'eel order parameter dynamics. This is particularly striking for the spin accumulation which is more than doubled by the coupling to the strain ; here as well, the mechanical oscillations are reflected on the magnetic dynamics. As a consequence of such a stress induced strain, the switching time of the magnetization is slightly faster and the amplitude of the magnetization enhanced.

Probing magneto-elastic phenomena through an effective spin-bath coupling model

A phenomenological model is constructed, that captures the effects of coupling magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom, in the presence of external, stochastic perturbations, in terms of the interaction of magnetic moments with a bath, whose individual degrees of freedom cannot be resolved and only their mesoscopic properties are relevant. In the present work, the consequences of identifying the effects of dissipation as resulting from interactions with a bath of spins are explored, in addition to elastic, degrees of freedom. The corresponding stochastic differential equations are solved numerically and the moments of the magnetization are computed. The stochastic equations implicitly define a measure on the space of spin configurations, whose moments at equal times satisfy a hierarchy of deterministic, ordinary differential equations. Closure assumptions are used to truncate the hierarchy and the same moments are computed. We focus on the advantages and problems that each approach presents, for the approach to equilibrium and, in particular, the emergence of longitudinal damping.

A group action principle for Nambu dynamics of spin degrees of freedom

We describe a formulation of the group action principle, for linear Nambu flows, that explicitly takes into account all the defining properties of Nambu mechanics and illustrate its relevance by showing how it can be used to describe the off-shell states and superpositions thereof that define the transition amplitudes for the quantization of Larmor precession of a magnetic moment. It highlights the relation between the fluctuations of the longitudinal and transverse components of the magnetization. This formulation has been shown to be consistent with the approach that has been developed in the framework of the non commutative geometry of the 3-torus. In this way the latter can be used as a consistent discretization of the former.

Coupling magneto-elastic Lagrangians to spin transfer torque sources

The consequences of coupling magnetic and elastic degrees of freedom, where spins and deformations are carried by point-like objects subject to local interactions, are studied, theoretically and by detailed numerical simulations. From the constrained Lagrangians we derive consistent equations of motion for the coupled dynamical variables. In order to probe the dynamics of such a system, we consider external perturbations, such as spin transfer torques for the magnetic part, and homogeneous stresses for the elastic part, associated to their corresponding damping. This approach is applied to the study of ultrafast switching processes in anti-ferromagnetic systems, which have recently attracted attention as candidates for anti-ferromagnetic spintronic devices. Our strategy is then checked in simple, but instructive, situations. We carried out numerical experiments to study, in particular, how the magnetostrictive coupling and external stresses affect the nature of the switching processes in a prototype anti-ferromagnetic material.

Nambu mechanics for stochastic magnetization dynamics

The Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert (LLG) equation describes the dynamics of a damped magnetization vector that can be understood as a generalization of Larmor spin precession. The LLG equation cannot be deduced from the Hamiltonian framework, by introducing a coupling to a usual bath, but requires the introduction of additional constraints. It is shown that these constraints can be formulated elegantly and consistently in the framework of dissipative Nambu mechanics. This has many consequences for both the variational principle and for topological aspects of hidden symmetries that control conserved quantities. We particularly study how the damping terms of dissipative Nambu mechanics affect the consistent interaction of magnetic systems with stochastic reservoirs and derive a master equation for the magnetization. The proposals are supported by numerical studies using symplectic integrators that preserve the topological structure of Nambu equations. These results are compared to computations performed by direct sampling of the stochastic equations and by using closure assumptions for the moment equations, deduced from the master equation.

Finite-dimensional colored fluctuation-dissipation theorem for spin systems

When nano-magnets are coupled to random external sources, their magnetization becomes a random variable, whose properties are defined by an induced probability density, that can be reconstructed from its moments, using the Langevin equation, for mapping the noise to the dynamical degrees of freedom. When the spin dynamics is discretized in time, a general fluctuation-dissipation theorem, valid for non-Markovian noise, can be established, even when zero modes are present. We discuss the subtleties that arise, when Gilbert damping is present and the mapping between noise and spin degrees of freedom is non--linear.

Probing the hue of the stochastic magnetization dynamics

The Fokker--Planck equation describes the evolution of a probability distribution towards equilibrium--the flow parameter is the equilibration time. Assuming the distribution remains normalizable for all times, it is equivalent to an open hierarchy of equations for the moments. Ways of closing this hierarchy have been proposed; ways of explicitly solving the hierarchy equations have received much less attention. In this paper we show that much insight can be gained by mapping the Fokker--Planck equation to a Schr\"odinger equation, where Planck's constant is identified with the diffusion coefficient.

A functional calculus for the magnetization dynamics

A functional calculus approach is applied to the derivation of evolution equations for the moments of the magnetization dynamics of systems subject to stochastic fields. It allows us to derive a general framework for obtaining the master equation for the stochastic magnetization dynamics, that is applied to both, Markovian and non-Markovian dynamics. The formalism is applied for studying different kinds of interactions, that are of practical relevance and hierarchies of evolution equations for the moments of the distribution of the magnetization are obtained. In each case, assumptions are spelled out, in order to close the hierarchies. These closure assumptions are tested by extensive numerical studies, that probe the validity of Gaussian or non--Gaussian closure Ans\"atze.

Colored-noise magnetization dynamics: from weakly to strongly correlated noise

Statistical averaging theorems allow us to derive a set of equations for the averaged magnetization dynamics in the presence of colored (non-Markovian) noise. The non-Markovian character of the noise is described by a finite auto-correlation time, tau, that can be identified with the finite response time of the thermal bath to the system of interest. Hitherto, this model was only tested for the case of weakly correlated noise (when tau is equivalent or smaller than the integration timestep). In order to probe its validity for a broader range of auto-correlation times, a non-Markovian integration model, based on the stochastic Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert equation is presented. Comparisons between the two models are discussed, and these provide evidence that both formalisms remain equivalent, even for strongly correlated noise (i.e. tau much larger than the integration timestep).

Non-Markovian magnetization dynamics for uniaxial nanomagnets

A stochastic approach for the description of the time evolution of the magnetization of nanomagnets is proposed, that interpolates between the Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert and the Landau-Lifshitz-Bloch approximations, by varying the strength of the noise. Its finite autocorrelation time, i.e. when it may be described as colored, rather than white, is, also, taken into account and the consequences, on the scale of the response of the magnetization are investigated. It is shown that the hierarchy for the moments of the magnetization can be closed, by introducing a suitable truncation scheme, whose validity is tested by direct numerical solution of the moment equations and compared to the averages obtained from a numerical solution of the corresponding colored stochastic Langevin equation. This comparison is performed on magnetic systems subject to both an external uniform magnetic field and an internal one-site uniaxial anisotropy.

Frequency-dependent effective permeability tensor of unsaturated polycrystalline ferrites

Frequency-dependent permeability tensor for unsaturated polycrystalline ferrites is derived through an effective medium approximation that combines both domain-wall motion and rotation of domains in a single consistent scattering framework. Thus derived permeability tensor is averaged on a distribution function of the free energy that encodes paramagnetic states for anhysteretic loops. The initial permeability is computed and frequency spectra are given by varying macroscopic remanent field.

Closing the hierarchy for non-Markovian magnetization dynamics

We propose a stochastic approach for the description of the time evolution of the magnetization of nanomagnets, that interpolates between the Landau--Lifshitz--Gilbert and the Landau--Lifshitz--Bloch approximations, by varying the strength of the noise. In addition, we take into account the autocorrelation time of the noise and explore the consequences, when it is finite, on the scale of the response of the magnetization, i.e. when it may be described as colored, rather than white, noise and non-Markovian features become relevant. We close the hierarchy for the moments of the magnetization, by introducing a suitable truncation scheme, whose validity is tested by direct numerical solution of the moment equations and compared to the average deduced from a numerical solution of the corresponding stochastic Langevin equation. In this way we establish a general framework, that allows both coarse-graining simulations and faster calculations beyond the truncation approximation used here.
