Second-Order Optical Nonlinearity of AlScN Films Grown By Molecular Beam Epitaxy

Alloys of AlN have rapidly emerged as a material platform for nonlinear optics. In this paper, we measure the second-order optical nonlinearity of AlScN films grown directly on nitrided c-plane sapphire by molecular beam epitaxy. This direct growth approach, which bypasses a thick AlN buffer layer, allows us to isolate the true nonlinear response of the AlScN film. Our results show a large enhancement of d31, but a suppression of d33 in AlScN films compared to AlN. We observe that d31 can be as high as 4.92 pm/V , which is 60 times larger than that of AlN. The development of AlScN-based photonic devices can enable energy-efficient nonlinear optical operations that can be epitaxially integrated with electronic and photonic devices based on Si, GaN and AlN.

MBABench: Evaluating LLM Agents on End-to-End Spreadsheet Tasks in Finance

LLM agents are increasingly expected to carry out end-to-end workflows, producing complete artifacts from high-level user instructions. To meet enterprise needs, frontier AI labs have developed agents that can construct entire spreadsheets from scratch. This is especially relevant in finance, where core workflows such as financial modeling, forecasting, and scenario analysis are commonly conducted through spreadsheets. Yet, existing spreadsheet benchmarks do not measure this new capability, focusing instead on question-answering or single-formula edits. To address this gap, we provide one of the first evaluations of agents on end-to-end spreadsheet tasks, focusing on economically critical financial workflows such as modeling and scenario analysis. Since deliverables therein are routinely reviewed and revised by multiple stakeholders, judging their quality necessarily involves high-level criteria such as readability or ease of modification. To reflect the multidimensional nature of solution quality, we develop an evaluation taxonomy comprising three dimensions: Accuracy, Formula, and Format, each comprising fine-grained criteria that reflect professional standards. Evaluating over 18 agents, the benchmark reveals that even the strongest agents fall short of basic professional finance standards, and their performance degrade sharply as the difficulty increases beyond a few chained calculations. This suggests that current agents are not yet able to reliably produce professional-quality spreadsheets at the level of complexity real-world workflows demand.

The two-body problem of ultra-cold atoms in a harmonic trap

We consider two bosonic atoms interacting with a short-range potential and trapped in a spherically symmetric harmonic oscillator. The problem is exactly solvable and is relevant for the study of ultra-cold atoms. We show that the energy spectrum is universal, irrespective of the shape of the interaction potential, provided its range is much smaller than the oscillator length.

Exact results for a charged, harmonically trapped quantum gas at arbitrary temperature and magnetic field strength

An analytical expression for the first-order density matrix of a charged, two-dimensional, harmonically confined quantum gas, in the presence of a constant magnetic field is derived. In contrast to previous results available in the literature, our expressions are exact for any temperature and magnetic field strength. We also present a novel factorization of the Bloch density matrix in the form of a simple product with a clean separation of the zero-field and field-dependent parts. This factorization provides an alternative way of analytically investigating the effects of the magnetic field on the system, and also permits the extension of our analysis to other dimensions, and/or anisotropic confinement.
