Entropy Neural Estimation for Graph Contrastive Learning

Contrastive learning on graphs aims at extracting distinguishable high-level representations of nodes. In this paper, we theoretically illustrate that the entropy of a dataset can be approximated by maximizing the lower bound of the mutual information across different views of a graph, \ie, entropy is estimated by a neural network. Based on this finding, we propose a simple yet effective subset sampling strategy to contrast pairwise representations between views of a dataset. In particular, we randomly sample nodes and edges from a given graph to build the input subset for a view. Two views are fed into a parameter-shared Siamese network to extract the high-dimensional embeddings and estimate the information entropy of the entire graph. For the learning process, we propose to optimize the network using two objectives, simultaneously. Concretely, the input of the contrastive loss function consists of positive and negative pairs. Our selection strategy of pairs is different from previous works and we present a novel strategy to enhance the representation ability of the graph encoder by selecting nodes based on cross-view similarities. We enrich the diversity of the positive and negative pairs by selecting highly similar samples and totally different data with the guidance of cross-view similarity scores, respectively. We also introduce a cross-view consistency constraint on the representations generated from the different views. This objective guarantees the learned representations are consistent across views from the perspective of the entire graph. We conduct extensive experiments on seven graph benchmarks, and the proposed approach achieves competitive performance compared to the current state-of-the-art methods. The source code will be publicly released once this paper is accepted.

Search for light dark matter from atmosphere in PandaX-4T

We report a search for light dark matter produced through the cascading decay of $η$ mesons, which are created as a result of inelastic collisions between cosmic rays and Earth's atmosphere. We introduce a new and general framework, publicly accessible, designed to address boosted dark matter specifically, with which a full and dedicated simulation including both elastic and quasi-elastic processes of Earth attenuation effect on the dark matter particles arriving at the detector is performed. In the PandaX-4T commissioning data of 0.63 tonne$\cdot$year exposure, no significant excess over background is observed. The first constraints on the interaction between light dark matter generated in the atmosphere and nucleus through a light scalar mediator are obtained. The lowest excluded cross-section is set at $5.9 \times 10^{-37}{\rm cm^2}$ for dark matter mass of $0.1$ MeV$/c^2$ and mediator mass of 300 MeV$/c^2$. The lowest upper limit of $η$ to dark matter decay branching ratio is $1.6 \times 10^{-7}$.

Crystal structures and high-temperature superconductivity in molybdenum-hydrogen binary system under high pressure

Motivated by advances in hydrogen-rich superconductors in the past decades, we conducted variable-composition structural searches in Mo-H binary system at high pressure. A new composition-pressure phase diagram of thermodynamically stable structures has been derived. Besides all previously discovered superconducting molybdenum hydrides, we also identified series of thermodynamically metastable superconducting structures, including I4/mmm-Mo$_3$H$_{14}$, I4cm-MoH$_9$, P4/nmm-MoH$_{10}$ and P42$_1$2-MoH$_{10}$, with the superconducting transition temperatures from 55 to 126 K at 300 GPa. In these superconducting molybdenum hydrides, vibrations of the Mo-atoms contributes significantly to the electron-phonon coupling and the superconducting transition temperature, in complementary to the contributions by the vibrations of the H-atoms. Our works highlight the importance of compounds with non-integer composition ratio and metastable states in material searches, for example the potential high temperature superconductors.

Graphene/silicon heterojunction for reconfigurable phase-relevant activation function in coherent optical neural networks

Optical neural networks (ONNs) herald a new era in information and communication technologies and have implemented various intelligent applications. In an ONN, the activation function (AF) is a crucial component determining the network performances and on-chip AF devices are still in development. Here, we first demonstrate on-chip reconfigurable AF devices with phase activation fulfilled by dual-functional graphene/silicon (Gra/Si) heterojunctions. With optical modulation and detection in one device, time delays are shorter, energy consumption is lower, reconfigurability is higher and the device footprint is smaller than other on-chip AF strategies. The experimental modulation voltage (power) of our Gra/Si heterojunction achieves as low as 1 V (0.5 mW), superior to many pure silicon counterparts. In the photodetection aspect, a high responsivity of over 200 mA/W is realized. Special nonlinear functions generated are fed into a complex-valued ONN to challenge handwritten letters and image recognition tasks, showing improved accuracy and potential of high-efficient, all-component-integration on-chip ONN. Our results offer new insights for on-chip ONN devices and pave the way to high-performance integrated optoelectronic computing circuits.

Learning Stochastic Dynamical Systems as an Implicit Regularization with Graph Neural Networks

Stochastic Gumbel graph networks are proposed to learn high-dimensional time series, where the observed dimensions are often spatially correlated. To that end, the observed randomness and spatial-correlations are captured by learning the drift and diffusion terms of the stochastic differential equation with a Gumble matrix embedding, respectively. In particular, this novel framework enables us to investigate the implicit regularization effect of the noise terms in S-GGNs. We provide a theoretical guarantee for the proposed S-GGNs by deriving the difference between the two corresponding loss functions in a small neighborhood of weight. Then, we employ Kuramoto's model to generate data for comparing the spectral density from the Hessian Matrix of the two loss functions. Experimental results on real-world data, demonstrate that S-GGNs exhibit superior convergence, robustness, and generalization, compared with state-of-the-arts.

Gravitational Wave High-energy Electromagnetic Counterpart All-sky Monitor (GECAM), consisting of two micro-satellites, is designed to detect gamma-ray bursts associated with gravitational-wave events. Here, we introduce the real-time burst alert system of GECAM, with the adoption of the BeiDou-3 short message communication service. We present the post-trigger operations, the detailed ground-based analysis, and the performance of the system. In the first year of the in-flight operation, GECAM was triggered by 42 GRBs. GECAM real-time burst alert system has the ability to distribute the alert within $\sim$1 minute after being triggered, which enables timely follow-up observations.

FTFDNet: Learning to Detect Talking Face Video Manipulation with Tri-Modality Interaction

DeepFake based digital facial forgery is threatening public media security, especially when lip manipulation has been used in talking face generation, and the difficulty of fake video detection is further improved. By only changing lip shape to match the given speech, the facial features of identity are hard to be discriminated in such fake talking face videos. Together with the lack of attention on audio stream as the prior knowledge, the detection failure of fake talking face videos also becomes inevitable. It's found that the optical flow of the fake talking face video is disordered especially in the lip region while the optical flow of the real video changes regularly, which means the motion feature from optical flow is useful to capture manipulation cues. In this study, a fake talking face detection network (FTFDNet) is proposed by incorporating visual, audio and motion features using an efficient cross-modal fusion (CMF) module. Furthermore, a novel audio-visual attention mechanism (AVAM) is proposed to discover more informative features, which can be seamlessly integrated into any audio-visual CNN architecture by modularization. With the additional AVAM, the proposed FTFDNet is able to achieve a better detection performance than other state-of-the-art DeepFake video detection methods not only on the established fake talking face detection dataset (FTFDD) but also on the DeepFake video detection datasets (DFDC and DF-TIMIT).

VisKoP: Visual Knowledge oriented Programming for Interactive Knowledge Base Question Answering

We present Visual Knowledge oriented Programming platform (VisKoP), a knowledge base question answering (KBQA) system that integrates human into the loop to edit and debug the knowledge base (KB) queries. VisKoP not only provides a neural program induction module, which converts natural language questions into knowledge oriented program language (KoPL), but also maps KoPL programs into graphical elements. KoPL programs can be edited with simple graphical operators, such as dragging to add knowledge operators and slot filling to designate operator arguments. Moreover, VisKoP provides auto-completion for its knowledge base schema and users can easily debug the KoPL program by checking its intermediate results. To facilitate the practical KBQA on a million-entity-level KB, we design a highly efficient KoPL execution engine for the back-end. Experiment results show that VisKoP is highly efficient and user interaction can fix a large portion of wrong KoPL programs to acquire the correct answer. The VisKoP online demo https://demoviskop.xlore.cn (Stable release of this paper) and https://viskop.xlore.cn (Beta release with new features), highly efficient KoPL engine https://pypi.org/project/kopl-engine, and screencast video https://youtu.be/zAbJtxFPTXo are now publicly available.

A Search for Light Fermionic Dark Matter Absorption on Electrons in PandaX-4T

We report a search on a sub-MeV fermionic dark matter absorbed by electrons with an outgoing active neutrino using the 0.63 tonne-year exposure collected by PandaX-4T liquid xenon experiment. No significant signals are observed over the expected background. The data are interpreted into limits to the effective couplings between such dark matter and electrons. For axial-vector or vector interactions, our sensitivity is competitive in comparison to existing astrophysical bounds on the decay of such dark matter into photon final states. In particular, we present the first direct detection limits for an axial-vector (vector) interaction which are the strongest in the mass range from 25 to 45 (35 to 50) keV/c$^2$.

A spectral-timing study of the inner flow geometry in MAXI J1535--571 with $Insight$-HXMT and NICER

We have performed a spectral-timing analysis on the black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1535--571 during its 2017 outburst, with the aim of exploring the evolution of the inner accretion flow geometry. X-ray reverberation lags are observed in the hard-intermediate state (HIMS) and soft-intermediate state (SIMS) of the outburst. During the HIMS, the characteristic frequency of the reverberation lags $ν_0$ (the frequency at which the soft lag turns to zero in the lag-frequency spectra) increases when the spectrum softens. This reflects a reduction of the spatial distance between the corona and accretion disc, when assuming the measured time lags are associated with the light travel time. We also find a strong correlation between $ν_0$ and type-C Quasi Periodic Oscillation (QPO) centroid frequency $ν_{QPO}$, which can be well explained by the Lense-Thirring (L-T) precession model under a truncated disk geometry. Despite the degeneracy in the spectral modellings, our results suggest that the accretion disc is largely truncated in the low hard state (LHS), and moves inward as the spectrum softens. Combine the spectral modelling results with the $ν_0$ - $ν_{QPO}$ evolution, we are inclined to believe that this source probably have a truncated disk geometry in the hard state.

Exploring the Potential of Integrated Optical Sensing and Communication (IOSAC) Systems with Si Waveguides for Future Networks

Advanced silicon photonic technologies enable integrated optical sensing and communication (IOSAC) in real time for the emerging application requirements of simultaneous sensing and communication for next-generation networks. Here, we propose and demonstrate the IOSAC system on the silicon nitride (SiN) photonics platform. The IOSAC devices based on microring resonators are capable of monitoring the variation of analytes, transmitting the information to the terminal along with the modulated optical signal in real-time, and replacing bulk optics in high-precision and high-speed applications. By directly integrating SiN ring resonators with optical communication networks, simultaneous sensing and optical communication are demonstrated by an optical signal transmission experimental system using especially filtering amplified spontaneous emission spectra. The refractive index (RI) sensing ring with a sensitivity of 172 nm/RIU, a figure of merit (FOM) of 1220, and a detection limit (DL) of 8.2*10-6 RIU is demonstrated. Simultaneously, the 1.25 Gbps optical on-off-keying (OOK) signal is transmitted at the concentration of different NaCl solutions, which indicates the bit-error-ratio (BER) decreases with the increase in concentration. The novel IOSAC technology shows the potential to realize high-performance simultaneous biosensing and communication in real time and further accelerate the development of IoT and 6G networks.

A first-principles investigation of the origin of superconductivity in TlBi$_2$

The intermetallic compound TlBi$_2$ crystallizes in the MgB$_2$ structure and becomes superconducting below 6.2 K. Considering that both Tl and Bi have heavy atomic masses, it is puzzling why TlBi$_2$ is a conventional phonon-mediated superconductor. We have performed comprehensive first-principles calculations of the electronic structures, the phonon dispersions and the electron-phonon couplings for TlBi$_2$. The $6p$ orbitals of bismuth dominate over the states near the Fermi level, forming strong intra-layer $p_{x/y}$ and inter-layer $p_z$ $σ$ bonds which is known to have strong electron-phonon coupling. In addition, the large spin-orbit coupling interaction in TlBi$_2$ increases its electron-phonon coupling constant significantly. As a result, TlBi$_2$, with a logarithmic phonon frequency average one tenth that of MgB$_2$, is a phonon-mediated superconductor.

MachMap: End-to-End Vectorized Solution for Compact HD-Map Construction

This report introduces the 1st place winning solution for the Autonomous Driving Challenge 2023 - Online HD-map Construction. By delving into the vectorization pipeline, we elaborate an effective architecture, termed as MachMap, which formulates the task of HD-map construction as the point detection paradigm in the bird-eye-view space with an end-to-end manner. Firstly, we introduce a novel map-compaction scheme into our framework, leading to reducing the number of vectorized points by 93% without any expression performance degradation. Build upon the above process, we then follow the general query-based paradigm and propose a strong baseline with integrating a powerful CNN-based backbone like InternImage, a temporal-based instance decoder and a well-designed point-mask coupling head. Additionally, an extra optional ensemble stage is utilized to refine model predictions for better performance. Our MachMap-tiny with IN-1K initialization achieves a mAP of 79.1 on the Argoverse2 benchmark and the further improved MachMap-huge reaches the best mAP of 83.5, outperforming all the other online HD-map construction approaches on the final leaderboard with a distinct performance margin (> 9.8 mAP at least).

Deep learning radiomics for assessment of gastroesophageal varices in people with compensated advanced chronic liver disease

Objective: Bleeding from gastroesophageal varices (GEV) is a medical emergency associated with high mortality. We aim to construct an artificial intelligence-based model of two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE) of the liver and spleen to precisely assess the risk of GEV and high-risk gastroesophageal varices (HRV). Design: A prospective multicenter study was conducted in patients with compensated advanced chronic liver disease. 305 patients were enrolled from 12 hospitals, and finally 265 patients were included, with 1136 liver stiffness measurement (LSM) images and 1042 spleen stiffness measurement (SSM) images generated by 2D-SWE. We leveraged deep learning methods to uncover associations between image features and patient risk, and thus conducted models to predict GEV and HRV. Results: A multi-modality Deep Learning Risk Prediction model (DLRP) was constructed to assess GEV and HRV, based on LSM and SSM images, and clinical information. Validation analysis revealed that the AUCs of DLRP were 0.91 for GEV (95% CI 0.90 to 0.93, p < 0.05) and 0.88 for HRV (95% CI 0.86 to 0.89, p < 0.01), which were significantly and robustly better than canonical risk indicators, including the value of LSM and SSM. Moreover, DLPR was better than the model using individual parameters, including LSM and SSM images. In HRV prediction, the 2D-SWE images of SSM outperform LSM (p < 0.01). Conclusion: DLRP shows excellent performance in predicting GEV and HRV over canonical risk indicators LSM and SSM. Additionally, the 2D-SWE images of SSM provided more information for better accuracy in predicting HRV than the LSM.

WebGLM: Towards An Efficient Web-Enhanced Question Answering System with Human Preferences

We present WebGLM, a web-enhanced question-answering system based on the General Language Model (GLM). Its goal is to augment a pre-trained large language model (LLM) with web search and retrieval capabilities while being efficient for real-world deployments. To achieve this, we develop WebGLM with strategies for the LLM-augmented retriever, bootstrapped generator, and human preference-aware scorer. Specifically, we identify and address the limitations of WebGPT (OpenAI), through which WebGLM is enabled with accuracy, efficiency, and cost-effectiveness advantages. In addition, we propose systematic criteria for evaluating web-enhanced QA systems. We conduct multi-dimensional human evaluation and quantitative ablation studies, which suggest the outperformance of the proposed WebGLM designs over existing systems. WebGLM with the 10-billion-parameter GLM (10B) is shown to perform better than the similar-sized WebGPT (13B) and even comparably to WebGPT (175B) in human evaluation. The code, demo, and data are at \url{https://github.com/THUDM/WebGLM}.

Leading components and pressure-induced color changes in N-doped lutetium hydride

Recent experimental study by Dias {\it et al.} claims to have discovered room-temperature superconductivity in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system at 1 GPa [Nature 615, 244 (2023)], which sheds light on the long-held dream of ambient superconductivity. However, all follow-up experiments found no evidence of superconductivity. The compositions and the crystal structures of the lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen system remain unknown. By employing the density functional theory based structure prediction algorithm, we suggest that in lutetium-nitrogen-hydrogen the major component is LuH$_2$ (Fm$\bar{3}$m), together with minor LuN (Fm$\bar{3}$m). The blue LuH$_2$ at ambient pressure will turn into purple and red color at higher pressures, possibly accompanied by the formation of vacancies at hydrogen-sites. In LuH$_2$ and LuN, the density of states at the Fermi level is dominated by the Lu-5d orbitals, while those from hydrogen and nitrogen are very small, leading to the absence of superconductivity in these two compounds. Nitrogen-doping to LuH$_2$ fails to enhance the superconductivity as well. In this work, we identify the leading components in N-doped lutetium hydride, explain its intriguing color changes under pressure, and elucidate why superconductivity is absent in the follow-up experiments.

Are Intermediate Layers and Labels Really Necessary? A General Language Model Distillation Method

The large scale of pre-trained language models poses a challenge for their deployment on various devices, with a growing emphasis on methods to compress these models, particularly knowledge distillation. However, current knowledge distillation methods rely on the model's intermediate layer features and the golden labels (also called hard labels), which usually require aligned model architecture and enough labeled data respectively. Moreover, the parameters of vocabulary are usually neglected in existing methods. To address these problems, we propose a general language model distillation (GLMD) method that performs two-stage word prediction distillation and vocabulary compression, which is simple and surprisingly shows extremely strong performance. Specifically, GLMD supports more general application scenarios by eliminating the constraints of dimension and structure between models and the need for labeled datasets through the absence of intermediate layers and golden labels. Meanwhile, based on the long-tailed distribution of word frequencies in the data, GLMD designs a strategy of vocabulary compression through decreasing vocabulary size instead of dimensionality. Experimental results show that our method outperforms 25 state-of-the-art methods on the SuperGLUE benchmark, achieving an average score that surpasses the best method by 3%.

GKD: A General Knowledge Distillation Framework for Large-scale Pre-trained Language Model

Currently, the reduction in the parameter scale of large-scale pre-trained language models (PLMs) through knowledge distillation has greatly facilitated their widespread deployment on various devices. However, the deployment of knowledge distillation systems faces great challenges in real-world industrial-strength applications, which require the use of complex distillation methods on even larger-scale PLMs (over 10B), limited by memory on GPUs and the switching of methods. To overcome these challenges, we propose GKD, a general knowledge distillation framework that supports distillation on larger-scale PLMs using various distillation methods. With GKD, developers can build larger distillation models on memory-limited GPUs and easily switch and combine different distillation methods within a single framework. Experimental results show that GKD can support the distillation of at least 100B-scale PLMs and 25 mainstream methods on 8 NVIDIA A100 (40GB) GPUs.
