Synthesizing Brain-Network-Inspired Interconnections for Large-Scale Network-on-Chips

Brain network is a large-scale complex network with scale-free, small-world, and modularity properties, which largely supports this high-efficiency massive system. In this paper, we propose to synthesize brain-network-inspired interconnections for large-scale network-on-chips. Firstly, we propose a method to generate brain-network-inspired topologies with limited scale-free and power-law small-world properties, which have a low total link length and extremely low average hop count approximately proportional to the logarithm of the network size. In addition, given the large-scale applications and the modular topology, we present an application mapping method, including task mapping and deterministic deadlock-free routing, to minimize the power consumption and hop count. Finally, a cycle-accurate simulator BookSim2 is used to validate the architecture performance with different synthetic traffic patterns and large-scale test cases, including real-world communication networks for the graph processing application. Experiments show that, compared with other topologies and methods, the NoC design generated by the proposed method presents significantly lower average hop count and lower average latency. Especially in graph processing applications with a power-law and tightly coupled inter-core communication, the brain-network-inspired NoC has up to 70% lower average hop count and 75% lower average latency than mesh-based NoCs.

Two Sample Unconditional Quantile Effect

This paper proposes a new framework to evaluate unconditional quantile effects (UQE) in a data combination model. The UQE measures the effect of a marginal counterfactual change in the unconditional distribution of a covariate on quantiles of the unconditional distribution of a target outcome. Under rank similarity and conditional independence assumptions, we provide a set of identification results for UQEs when the target covariate is continuously distributed and when it is discrete, respectively. Based on these identification results, we propose semiparametric estimators and establish their large sample properties under primitive conditions. Applying our method to a variant of Mincer's earnings function, we study the counterfactual quantile effect of actual work experience on income.

Bigeminal Priors Variational auto-encoder

Variational auto-encoders (VAEs) are an influential and generally-used class of likelihood-based generative models in unsupervised learning. The likelihood-based generative models have been reported to be highly robust to the out-of-distribution (OOD) inputs and can be a detector by assuming that the model assigns higher likelihoods to the samples from the in-distribution (ID) dataset than an OOD dataset. However, recent works reported a phenomenon that VAE recognizes some OOD samples as ID by assigning a higher likelihood to the OOD inputs compared to the one from ID. In this work, we introduce a new model, namely Bigeminal Priors Variational auto-encoder (BPVAE), to address this phenomenon. The BPVAE aims to enhance the robustness of the VAEs by combing the power of VAE with the two independent priors that belong to the training dataset and simple dataset, which complexity is lower than the training dataset, respectively. BPVAE learns two datasets'features, assigning a higher likelihood for the training dataset than the simple dataset. In this way, we can use BPVAE's density estimate for detecting the OOD samples. Quantitative experimental results suggest that our model has better generalization capability and stronger robustness than the standard VAEs, proving the effectiveness of the proposed approach of hybrid learning by collaborative priors. Overall, this work paves a new avenue to potentially overcome the OOD problem via multiple latent priors modeling.

SketchyCOCO: Image Generation from Freehand Scene Sketches

We introduce the first method for automatic image generation from scene-level freehand sketches. Our model allows for controllable image generation by specifying the synthesis goal via freehand sketches. The key contribution is an attribute vector bridged Generative Adversarial Network called EdgeGAN, which supports high visual-quality object-level image content generation without using freehand sketches as training data. We have built a large-scale composite dataset called SketchyCOCO to support and evaluate the solution. We validate our approach on the tasks of both object-level and scene-level image generation on SketchyCOCO. Through quantitative, qualitative results, human evaluation and ablation studies, we demonstrate the method's capacity to generate realistic complex scene-level images from various freehand sketches.

Covariate Distribution Balance via Propensity Scores

This paper proposes new estimators for the propensity score that aim to maximize the covariate distribution balance among different treatment groups. Heuristically, our proposed procedure attempts to estimate a propensity score model by making the underlying covariate distribution of different treatment groups as close to each other as possible. Our estimators are data-driven, do not rely on tuning parameters such as bandwidths, admit an asymptotic linear representation, and can be used to estimate different treatment effect parameters under different identifying assumptions, including unconfoundedness and local treatment effects. We derive the asymptotic properties of inverse probability weighted estimators for the average, distributional, and quantile treatment effects based on the proposed propensity score estimator and illustrate their finite sample performance via Monte Carlo simulations and two empirical applications.

Unsupervised AER Object Recognition Based on Multiscale Spatio-Temporal Features and Spiking Neurons

This paper proposes an unsupervised address event representation (AER) object recognition approach. The proposed approach consists of a novel multiscale spatio-temporal feature (MuST) representation of input AER events and a spiking neural network (SNN) using spike-timing-dependent plasticity (STDP) for object recognition with MuST. MuST extracts the features contained in both the spatial and temporal information of AER event flow, and meanwhile forms an informative and compact feature spike representation. We show not only how MuST exploits spikes to convey information more effectively, but also how it benefits the recognition using SNN. The recognition process is performed in an unsupervised manner, which does not need to specify the desired status of every single neuron of SNN, and thus can be flexibly applied in real-world recognition tasks. The experiments are performed on five AER datasets including a new one named GESTURE-DVS. Extensive experimental results show the effectiveness and advantages of this proposed approach.

Generalized Fault-Tolerance Topology Generation for Application Specific Network-on-Chips

The Network-on-Chips is a promising candidate for addressing communication bottlenecks in many-core processors and neural network processors. In this work, we consider the generalized fault-tolerance topology generation problem, where the link or switch failures can happen, for application-specific network-on-chips (ASNoC). With a user-defined number, K, we propose an integer linear programming (ILP) based method to generate ASNoC topologies, which can tolerate at most K faults in switches or links. Given the communication requirements between cores and their floorplan, we first propose a convex-cost-flow based method to solve a core mapping problem for building connections between the cores and switches. Second, an ILP based method is proposed to allocate K+1 switch-disjoint routing paths for every communication flow between the cores. Finally, to reduce switch sizes, we propose sharing the switch ports for the connections between the cores and switches and formulate the port sharing problem as a clique-partitioning problem Additionally, we propose an ILP-based method to simultaneously solve the core mapping and routing path allocation problems when considering physical link failures only. Experimental results show that the power consumptions of fault-tolerance topologies increase almost linearly with K because of the routing path redundancy. When both switch faults and link faults are considered, port sharing can reduce the average power consumption of fault-tolerance topologies with K = 1, K = 2 and K = 3 by 18.08%, 28.88%, and 34.20%, respectively. When considering only the physical link faults, the experimental results show that compared to the FTTG algorithm, the proposed method reduces power consumption and hop count by 10.58% and 6.25%, respectively; compared to the DBG based method, the proposed method reduces power consumption and hop count by 21.72% and 9.35%, respectively.

Integrated Optimization of Partitioning, Scheduling and Floorplanning for Partially Dynamically Reconfigurable Systems

Confronted with the challenge of high performance for applications and the restriction of hardware resources for field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs), partial dynamic reconfiguration (PDR) technology is anticipated to accelerate the reconfiguration process and alleviate the device shortage. In this paper, we propose an integrated optimization framework for task partitioning, scheduling and floorplanning on partially dynamically reconfigurable FPGAs. The partitions, schedule, and floorplan of the tasks are represented by the partitioned sequence triple P-ST (PS,QS,RS), where (PS,QS) is a hybrid nested sequence pair (HNSP) for representing the spatial and temporal partitions, as well as the floorplan, and RS is the partitioned dynamic configuration order of the tasks. The floorplanning and scheduling of task modules can be computed from the partitioned sequence triple P-ST in O(n^2) time. To integrate the exploration of the scheduling and floorplanning design space, we use a simulated annealing-based search engine and elaborate a perturbation method, where a randomly chosen task module is removed from the partition sequence triple and then inserted back into a proper position selected from all the (n+1)^3 possible combinations of partitions, schedule and floorplan. The experimental results demonstrate the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed framework.

Adaptive 3D-IC TSV Fault Tolerance Structure Generation

In three dimensional integrated circuits (3D-ICs), through silicon via (TSV) is a critical technique in providing vertical connections. However, the yield and reliability is one of the key obstacles to adopt the TSV based 3D-ICs technology in industry. Various fault-tolerance structures using spare TSVs to repair faulty functional TSVs have been proposed in literature for yield and reliability enhancement, but a valid structure cannot always be found due to the lack of effective generation methods for fault-tolerance structures. In this paper, we focus on the problem of adaptive fault-tolerance structure generation. Given the relations between functional TSVs and spare TSVs, we first calculate the maximum number of tolerant faults in each TSV group. Then we propose an integer linear programming (ILP) based model to construct adaptive fault-tolerance struc- ture with minimal multiplexer delay overhead and hardware cost. We further develop a speed-up technique through efficient min-cost-max-flow (MCMF) model. All the proposed method- ologies are embedded in a top-down TSV planning framework to form functional TSV groups and generate adaptive fault- tolerance structures. Experimental results show that, compared with state-of-the-art, the number of spare TSVs used for fault tolerance can be effectively reduced.

Network structure of subway passenger flows

The results of transportation infrastructure network analyses have been used to analyze complex networks in a topological context. However, most modeling approaches, including those based on complex network theory, do not fully account for real-life traffic patterns and may provide an incomplete view of network functions. This study utilizes trip data obtained from the Beijing Subway System to characterize individual passenger movement patterns. A directed weighted passenger flow network was constructed from the subway infrastructure network topology by incorporating trip data. The passenger flow networks exhibit several properties that can be characterized by power-law distributions based on flow size, and log-logistic distributions based on the fraction of boarding and departing passengers. The study also characterizes the temporal patterns of in-transit and waiting passengers and provides a hierarchical clustering structure for passenger flows. This hierarchical flow organization varies in the spatial domain. Ten cluster groups were identified, indicating a hierarchical urban polycentric structure composed of large concentrated flows at urban activity centers. These empirical findings provide insights regarding urban human mobility patterns within a large subway network.

Effects of Crowding Perception on Self-organized Pedestrian Flows Using Adaptive Agent-based Model

Pedestrian behavior has much more complicated characteristics in a dense crowd and thus attracts the widespread interest of scientists and engineers. However, even successful modeling approaches such as pedestrian models based on particle systems are still not fully considered the perceptive mechanism underlying collective pedestrian behavior. This paper extends a behavioral heuristics-based pedestrian model to an adaptive agent-based model, which explicitly considers the crowding effect of neighboring individuals and perception anisotropy on the representation of a pedestrians visual information. The adaptive agents with crowding perception are constructed to investigate complex, selforganized collective dynamics of pedestrian motion. The proposed model simulates selforganized pedestrian flows in good quantitative agreement with empirical data. The selforganized phenomena include lane formation in bidirectional flow and fundamental diagrams of unidirectional flow. Simulation results show that the emergence of lane formation in bidirectional flow can be well reproduced. To investigate this further, increasing view distance has a significant effect on reducing the number of lanes, increasing lane width, and stabilizing the self-organized lanes. The paper also discusses phase transitions of fundamental diagrams of pedestrian crowds with unidirectional flow. It is found that the heterogeneity of how pedestrians perceive crowding in the population has a remarkable impact on the flow quality, which results in the buildup of congestion and rapidly decreases the efficiency of pedestrian flows. It also indicates that the concept of heterogeneity may be used to explain the instability of phase transitions.
