The Relationship between Maximum Principle and Dynamic Programming Principle for Stochastic Recursive Control Problem with Random Coefficients

This paper aims to explore the relationship between maximum principle and dynamic programming principle for stochastic recursive control problem with random coefficients. Under certain regular conditions for the coefficients, the relationship between the Hamilton system with random coefficients and stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is obtained. It is very different from the deterministic coefficients case since stochastic Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation is a backward stochastic partial differential equation with solution being a pair of random fields rather than a deterministic function. A linear quadratic recursive utility optimization problem is given as an explicitly illustrated example based on this kind of relationship.

Grid-less Variational Direction of Arrival Estimation in Heteroscedastic Noise Environment

Horizontal line arrays are often employed in underwater environments to estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of a weak signal. Conventional beamforming (CB) is robust but has wide beamwidths and high-level sidelobes. High-resolution methods such as minimum-variance distortionless response (MVDR) and subspace-based MUSIC algorithm, produce low sidelobe levels and narrow beamwidths, but are sensitive to signal mismatch and require many snapshots and the knowledge of number of sources. In addition, heteroscedastic noise where the variance varies across observations and sensors due to nonstationary environments degrades the conventional methods significantly. This paper studies DOA in heteroscedastic noise (HN) environment, where the variance of noise is varied across the snapshots and the antennas. By treating the DOAs as random variables and the nuisance parameters of the noise variance different across the snapshots and the antennas, multi-snapshot variational line spectral estimation (MVALSE) dealing with heteroscedastic noise (MVHN) is proposed, which automatically estimates the noise variance, nuisance parameters of the prior distribution, number of sources, and provides the uncertain degrees of DOA estimates. When the noise variance only varies across the snapshots or the antennas, the variants of MVHN, i.e., MVHN-S and MVHN-A, can be naturally developed. Finally, substantial numerical experiments are conducted to illustrate the proposed algorithms' performance, including a real data set in DOA application.

Effects of green revolution led agricultural expansion on net ecosystem service values in India

Ecosystem Services are a bundle of natural processes and functions that are essential for human well-being, subsistence, and livelihood. The expansion of cultivation and cropland, which is the backbone of the Indian economy, is one of the main drivers of rapid Land Use Land Cover changes in India. To assess the impact of the Green Revolution led agrarian expansion on the total ecosystem service values, we first estimated the ESVs from 1985 to 2005 for eight ecoregions in India using several value transfer approaches. Five explanatory factors such as Total Crop Area, Crop Production, Crop Yield, Net Irrigated Area, and Cropping Intensity representing the cropping scenarios in the country were used in constructing local Geographical Weighted Regression model to explore the cumulative and individual effects on ESVs. A Multi-Layer Perceptron based Artificial Neural Network algorithm was employed to estimate the normalized importance of these explanatory factors. During the observation periods, cropland, forestland, and water bodies have contributed the most and form a significant proportion of ESVs, followed by grassland, mangrove, wetland, and urban builtup. In all three years, among the nine ESs, the highest ESV accounts for water regulation, followed by soil formation and soilwater retention, biodiversity maintenance, waste treatment, climate regulation, and gas regulation. Among the five explanatory factors, TCA, NIA, CP showed a strong positive association with ESVs, while the CI exhibited a negative association. The study reveals a strong association between GR led agricultural expansion and ESVs in India.

Energy Concealment based Compressive Sensing Encryption for Perfect Secrecy for IoT

Recent study has shown that compressive sensing (CS) based computationally secure scheme using Gaussian or Binomial sensing matrix in resource-constrained IoT devices is vulnerable to ciphertext-only attack. Although the CS-based perfectly secure scheme has no such vulnerabilities, the practical realization of the perfectly secure scheme is challenging, because it requires an additional secure channel to transmit the measurement norm. In this paper, we devise a practical realization of a perfectly secure scheme by concealing energy in which the requirement of an additional secure channel is removed. Since the generation of Gaussian sensing matrices is not feasible in resource-constrained IoT devices, approximate Gaussian sensing matrices are generated using linear feedback shift registers. We also demonstrate the implementation feasibility of the proposed perfectly secure scheme in practice without additional complexity. Furthermore, the security analysis of the proposed scheme is performed and compared with the state-of-the-art compressive sensing based energy obfuscation scheme.

Compressive Sensing based Multi-class Privacy-preserving Cloud Computing

In this paper, we design the multi-class privacy$\text{-}$preserving cloud computing scheme (MPCC) leveraging compressive sensing for compact sensor data representation and secrecy for data encryption. The proposed scheme achieves two-class secrecy, one for superuser who can retrieve the exact sensor data, and the other for semi-authorized user who is only able to obtain the statistical data such as mean, variance, etc. MPCC scheme allows computationally expensive sparse signal recovery to be performed at cloud without compromising the confidentiality of data to the cloud service providers. In this way, it mitigates the issues in data transmission, energy and storage caused by massive IoT sensor data as well as the increasing concerns about IoT data privacy in cloud computing. Compared with the state-of-the-art schemes, we show that MPCC scheme not only has lower computational complexity at the IoT sensor device and data consumer, but also is proved to be secure against ciphertext-only attack.

Nesting and Degeneracy of Mie Resonances of Dielectric Cavities within Zero-Index Materials

Resonances in optical cavities have been used to manipulate light propagation, enhance light-matter interaction, modulate quantum states, and so on. However, in traditional cavities, the permittivity contrast in and out the cavity is not so high. Recently, zero-index materials (ZIMs) with unique properties and specific applications have attracted great interest. By putting optical cavity into ZIMs, the extreme circumstance with infinite permittivity contrast can be obtained. Here, we theoretically study Mie resonances of dielectric cavities embedded in ZIMs with $\varepsilon \approx 0$, or $μ\approx 0$, or $(\varepsilon,μ) \approx 0$. Owing to ultrahigh contrast ratio of $\varepsilon$ or $μ$ in and out the cavities, with fixed wavelength, a series of Mie resonances with the same angular mode number $l$ but with different cavity radii are obtained; more interestingly, its $2^l$-TM (TE) and $2^{l+1}$-TE (TM) modes have the same resonant solution for the cavity in $\varepsilon \approx 0$ ($μ\approx 0$) material, and the resonance degeneracy also occurs between $2^l$-TM mode and $2^l$-TE mode for $(\varepsilon,μ) \approx 0$ material. We further use resonance degeneracy to modulate the Purcell effect of quantum emitter inside the cavity. The results of resonance nesting and degeneracy will provide an additional view or freedom to enhance the performance of cavity behaviors.

Keep it Consistent: Topic-Aware Storytelling from an Image Stream via Iterative Multi-agent Communication

Visual storytelling aims to generate a narrative paragraph from a sequence of images automatically. Existing approaches construct text description independently for each image and roughly concatenate them as a story, which leads to the problem of generating semantically incoherent content. In this paper, we propose a new way for visual storytelling by introducing a topic description task to detect the global semantic context of an image stream. A story is then constructed with the guidance of the topic description. In order to combine the two generation tasks, we propose a multi-agent communication framework that regards the topic description generator and the story generator as two agents and learn them simultaneously via iterative updating mechanism. We validate our approach on VIST dataset, where quantitative results, ablations, and human evaluation demonstrate our method's good ability in generating stories with higher quality compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Spatiotemporal effects of the causal factors on COVID-19 incidences in the contiguous United States

Since December 2019, the world has been witnessing the gigantic effect of an unprecedented global pandemic called Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) - COVID-19. So far, 38,619,674 confirmed cases and 1,093,522 confirmed deaths due to COVID-19 have been reported. In the United States (US), the cases and deaths are recorded as 7,833,851 and 215,199. Several timely researches have discussed the local and global effects of the confounding factors on COVID-19 casualties in the US. However, most of these studies considered little about the time varying associations between and among these factors, which are crucial for understanding the outbreak of the present pandemic. Therefore, this study adopts various relevant approaches, including local and global spatial regression models and machine learning to explore the causal effects of the confounding factors on COVID-19 counts in the contiguous US. Totally five spatial regression models, spatial lag model (SLM), ordinary least square (OLS), spatial error model (SEM), geographically weighted regression (GWR) and multiscale geographically weighted regression (MGWR), are performed at the county scale to take into account the scale effects on modelling. For COVID-19 cases, ethnicity, crime, and income factors are found to be the strongest covariates and explain the maximum model variances. For COVID-19 deaths, both (domestic and international) migration and income factors play a crucial role in explaining spatial differences of COVID-19 death counts across counties. The local coefficient of determination (R2) values derived from the GWR and MGWR models are found very high over the Wisconsin-Indiana-Michigan (the Great Lake) region, as well as several parts of Texas, California, Mississippi and Arkansas.

Tasty Burgers, Soggy Fries: Probing Aspect Robustness in Aspect-Based Sentiment Analysis

Aspect-based sentiment analysis (ABSA) aims to predict the sentiment towards a specific aspect in the text. However, existing ABSA test sets cannot be used to probe whether a model can distinguish the sentiment of the target aspect from the non-target aspects. To solve this problem, we develop a simple but effective approach to enrich ABSA test sets. Specifically, we generate new examples to disentangle the confounding sentiments of the non-target aspects from the target aspect's sentiment. Based on the SemEval 2014 dataset, we construct the Aspect Robustness Test Set (ARTS) as a comprehensive probe of the aspect robustness of ABSA models. Over 92% data of ARTS show high fluency and desired sentiment on all aspects by human evaluation. Using ARTS, we analyze the robustness of nine ABSA models, and observe, surprisingly, that their accuracy drops by up to 69.73%. We explore several ways to improve aspect robustness, and find that adversarial training can improve models' performance on ARTS by up to 32.85%. Our code and new test set are available at https://github.com/zhijing-jin/ARTS_TestSet

Effects of West Coast forest fire emissions on atmospheric environment: A coupled satellite and ground-based assessment

Forest fires have a profound impact on the atmospheric environment and air quality across the ecosystems. The recent west coast forest fire in the United States of America (USA) has broken all the past records and caused severe environmental and public health burdens. As of middle September, nearly 6 million acres forest area were burned, and more than 25 casualties were reported so far. In this study, both satellite and in-situ air pollution data were utilized to examine the effects of this unprecedented wildfire on the atmospheric environment. The spatiotemporal concentrations of total six air pollutants, i.e. carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), sulfur dioxide (SO2), ozone (O3), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10), and aerosol index (AI), were measured for the periods of 15 August to 15 September for 2020 (fire year) and 2019 (reference year). The in-situ data-led measurements show that the highest increases in CO (ppm), PM2.5, and PM10 concentrations (μg/m3) were clustered around the west coastal fire-prone states, during the 15 August - 15 September period. The average CO concentration (ppm) was increased most significantly in Oregon (1147.10), followed by Washington (812.76), and California (13.17). Meanwhile, the concentration (μg/m3) in particulate matter (both PM2.5 and PM10), was increased in all three states affected severely by wildfires. Changes (positive) in both PM2.5 and PM10 were measured highest in Washington (45.83 and 88.47 for PM2.5 and PM10), followed by Oregon (41.99 and 62.75 for PM2.5 and PM10), and California (31.27 and 35.04 for PM2.5 and PM10). The average level of exposure to CO, PM2.5, and PM10 was also measured for all the three fire-prone states. The results of the exposure assessment revealed a strong tradeoff association between wildland fire and local/regional air quality standard.

Simplify the Usage of Lexicon in Chinese NER

Recently, many works have tried to augment the performance of Chinese named entity recognition (NER) using word lexicons. As a representative, Lattice-LSTM (Zhang and Yang, 2018) has achieved new benchmark results on several public Chinese NER datasets. However, Lattice-LSTM has a complex model architecture. This limits its application in many industrial areas where real-time NER responses are needed. In this work, we propose a simple but effective method for incorporating the word lexicon into the character representations. This method avoids designing a complicated sequence modeling architecture, and for any neural NER model, it requires only subtle adjustment of the character representation layer to introduce the lexicon information. Experimental studies on four benchmark Chinese NER datasets show that our method achieves an inference speed up to 6.15 times faster than those of state-ofthe-art methods, along with a better performance. The experimental results also show that the proposed method can be easily incorporated with pre-trained models like BERT.

High-fidelity single-shot readout of single electron spin in diamond with spin-to-charge conversion

High fidelity single-shot readout of qubits is a crucial component for fault-tolerant quantum computing and scalable quantum networks. In recent years, the nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center in diamond has risen as a leading platform for the above applications. The current single-shot readout of the NV electron spin relies on resonance fluorescence method at cryogenic temperature. However, the the spin-flip process interrupts the optical cycling transition, therefore, limits the readout fidelity. Here, we introduce a spin-to-charge conversion method assisted by near-infrared (NIR) light to suppress the spin-flip error. This method leverages high spin-selectivity of cryogenic resonance excitation and high flexibility of photonionization. We achieve an overall fidelity $>$ 95% for the single-shot readout of an NV center electron spin in the presence of high strain and fast spin-flip process. With further improvements, this technique has the potential to achieve spin readout fidelity exceeding the fault-tolerant threshold, and may also find applications on integrated optoelectronic devices.

Multivariate Time-series Anomaly Detection via Graph Attention Network

Anomaly detection on multivariate time-series is of great importance in both data mining research and industrial applications. Recent approaches have achieved significant progress in this topic, but there is remaining limitations. One major limitation is that they do not capture the relationships between different time-series explicitly, resulting in inevitable false alarms. In this paper, we propose a novel self-supervised framework for multivariate time-series anomaly detection to address this issue. Our framework considers each univariate time-series as an individual feature and includes two graph attention layers in parallel to learn the complex dependencies of multivariate time-series in both temporal and feature dimensions. In addition, our approach jointly optimizes a forecasting-based model and are construction-based model, obtaining better time-series representations through a combination of single-timestamp prediction and reconstruction of the entire time-series. We demonstrate the efficacy of our model through extensive experiments. The proposed method outperforms other state-of-the-art models on three real-world datasets. Further analysis shows that our method has good interpretability and is useful for anomaly diagnosis.

Two Step Joint Model for Drug Drug Interaction Extraction

When patients need to take medicine, particularly taking more than one kind of drug simultaneously, they should be alarmed that there possibly exists drug-drug interaction. Interaction between drugs may have a negative impact on patients or even cause death. Generally, drugs that conflict with a specific drug (or label drug) are usually described in its drug label or package insert. Since more and more new drug products come into the market, it is difficult to collect such information by manual. We take part in the Drug-Drug Interaction (DDI) Extraction from Drug Labels challenge of Text Analysis Conference (TAC) 2018, choosing task1 and task2 to automatically extract DDI related mentions and DDI relations respectively. Instead of regarding task1 as named entity recognition (NER) task and regarding task2 as relation extraction (RE) task then solving it in a pipeline, we propose a two step joint model to detect DDI and it's related mentions jointly. A sequence tagging system (CNN-GRU encoder-decoder) finds precipitants first and search its fine-grained Trigger and determine the DDI for each precipitant in the second step. Moreover, a rule based model is built to determine the sub-type for pharmacokinetic interation. Our system achieved best result in both task1 and task2. F-measure reaches 0.46 in task1 and 0.40 in task2.

A Unified Framework for Adjustable Robust Optimization with Endogenous Uncertainty

This work proposes a framework for multistage adjustable robust optimization that unifies the treatment of three different types of endogenous uncertainty, where decisions, respectively, (i) alter the uncertainty set, (ii) affect the materialization of uncertain parameters, and (iii) determine the time when the true values of uncertain parameters are observed. We provide a systematic analysis of the different types of endogenous uncertainty and highlight the connection between optimization under endogenous uncertainty and active learning. We consider decision-dependent polyhedral uncertainty sets and propose a decision rule approach that incorporates both continuous and binary recourse, including recourse decisions that affect the uncertainty set. The proposed method enables the modeling of decision-dependent nonanticipativity and results in a tractable reformulation of the problem. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the approach in computational experiments that cover a range of applications, including plant redesign, maintenance planning with inspections, optimizing revision points in capacity planning, and production scheduling with active parameter estimation. The results show significant benefits from the proper modeling of endogenous uncertainty and active learning.

Multistage Robust Mixed-Integer Optimization Under Endogenous Uncertainty

Endogenous, i.e. decision-dependent, uncertainty has received increased interest in the stochastic programming community. In the robust optimization context, however, it has rarely been considered. This work addresses multistage robust mixed-integer optimization with decision-dependent uncertainty sets. The proposed framework allows us to consider both continuous and integer recourse, including recourse decisions that affect the uncertainty set. We derive a tractable reformulation of the problem by leveraging recent advances in the construction of nonlinear decision rules, and introduce discontinuous piecewise linear decision rules for continuous recourse. Computational experiments are performed to gain insights on the impact of endogenous uncertainty, the benefit of discrete recourse, and computational performance. Our results indicate that the level of conservatism in the solution can be significantly reduced if endogenous uncertainty and mixed-integer recourse are properly modeled.

A Machine Learning-enhanced Robust P-Phase Picker for Real-time Seismic Monitoring

Identifying the arrival times of seismic P-phases plays a significant role in real-time seismic monitoring, which provides critical guidance for emergency response activities. While considerable research has been conducted on this topic, efficiently capturing the arrival times of seismic P-phases hidden within intensively distributed and noisy seismic waves, such as those generated by the aftershocks of destructive earthquakes, remains a real challenge since most common existing methods in seismology rely on laborious expert supervision. To this end, in this paper, we present a machine learning-enhanced framework based on ensemble learning strategy, EL-Picker, for the automatic identification of seismic P-phase arrivals on continuous and massive waveforms. More specifically, EL-Picker consists of three modules, namely, Trigger, Classifier, and Refiner, and an ensemble learning strategy is exploited to integrate several machine learning classifiers. An evaluation of the aftershocks following the MS 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake demonstrates that EL-Picker can not only achieve the best identification performance but also identify 120% more seismic P-phase arrivals as complementary data. Meanwhile, experimental results also reveal both the applicability of different machine learning models for waveforms collected from different seismic stations and the regularities of seismic P-phase arrivals that might be neglected during manual inspection. These findings clearly validate the effectiveness, efficiency, flexibility and stability of EL-Picker.

Linear Response Theory for Nonlinear Stochastic Differential Equations with $α$-stable Lévy Noises

We consider a nonlinear stochastic differential equation driven by an $α$-stable Lévy process ($1<α<2$). We first obtain some regularity results for the probability density of its invariant measure via establishing the a priori estimate of the corresponding stationary Fokker-Planck equation. Then by the a priori estimate of Kolmogorov backward equations and the perturbation property of Markov semigroup, we derive the response function and generalize the famous linear response theory in nonequilibrium statistical mechanics to non-Gaussian stochastic dynamic systems.
