The Circumnuclear Star-forming Activities along the Hubble Sequence

In order to study the circumnuclear star-forming activity along the Hubble sequence, we cross-correlate the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 2 (SDSS DR2) with the Third Reference Catalog of Bright Galaxies (RC3) to derive a large sample of 1015 galaxies with both morphological and spectral information. Among these, 385 sources are classified as star-forming galaxies and the SDSS fibre covered the circumnuclear regions (0.2 $-$ 2.0 kpc). By using the spectral synthesis method to remove the contribution from the underlying old stellar population, we measure the emission lines fluxes accurately which are then used to estimate the star formation rates(SFRs). Our main findings are that: (1) Early-type spirals show much larger H$α$ luminosities and hence higher SFRs, they also suffer more extinctions than late-type ones. The equivalent widths (EWs) of H$α$ emission lines show the similar trend, however, the very late types (Sdm $\sim$ Irr) do have large fractions of high EWs. (2) We confirm that D$_n(4000)$ has strong correlation with the strengthes of metallic absorption lines (such as CN band, G band and Mg Ib). Both these lines and the Balmer absorption lines show interesting variations between Sbc to Sd type galaxies. (3) The bar structure tightly relates with the enhanced star forming activity, this effect is even more significant in the early-type spirals. But we should note that the bar structure is not a necessary or sufficient condition for galaxies to harbor circumnuclear star formations.

Emission Line Properties of Seyfert 2 Nuclei

We present a study of the global properties of Joguet's sample of 65 Seyfert 2 galaxies. We use the population synthesis models of our Paper II to derive `pure' emission-line spectra, and thus explore the statistical properties of the nuclear nebular components and their relation to the stellar populations. We find that the emission line clouds suffer substantially more extinction than the starlight, and confirm the correlations between stellar and nebular velocity dispersions and between emission line luminosity and velocity dispersions. Nuclear luminosities correlate with stellar velocity dispersions. Removing the contribution of young stars to the optical continuum produces a tighter and steeper relation, $L \propto σ_\star^4$, consistent with the Faber-Jackson law. Emission line ratios indicative of the gas excitation such as [OIII]/H$β$ and [OIII]/[OII] are statistically smaller for Seyferts with significant star-formation, implying that ionization by massive stars is responsible for a substantial, and sometimes even a dominant, fraction of the H$β$ and [OII] fluxes. We use our models to constrain the maximum fraction of the ionizing power that can be generated by a hidden AGN. We correlate this fraction with classical indicators of AGN photo-ionization: X-ray luminosity and nebular excitation, but find no significant correlations. Thus, while there is a strong contribution of starbursts to the excitation of the nuclear nebular emission in low-luminosity Seyferts, the contribution of the hidden AGN remains elusive even in hard X-rays. IC 225: a dwarf elliptical galaxy with a peculiar blue core

We present the discovery of a peculiar blue core in the elliptical galaxy IC 225 by using images and spectrum from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The outer parts of the surface brightness profiles of u-, g-, r-, i- and z-band SDSS images for IC 225 are well fitted with an exponential function. The fitting results show that IC 225 follows the same relations between the magnitude, scale length and central surface brightness for dwarf elliptical galaxies. Its absolute blue magnitude (M_B) is -17.14 mag, all of which suggest that IC 225 is a typical dwarf elliptical galaxy. The g-r color profile indicates a very blue core with a radius of 2 arcseconds, which is also clearly seen in the RGB image made of g-, r- and i-band SDSS images. The SDSS optical spectrum exhibits strong and very narrow nebular emission lines. The metal abundances derived by the standard methods, which are 12+log(O/H) = 8.98, log(N/O) = -0.77 and 12+log(S+/H+) = 6.76, turn out to be significantly higher than that predicted by the well-known luminosity-metallicity relation. After carefully inspecting the central region of IC 225, we find that there are two distinct nuclei, separated by 1.4 arcseconds, the off-nucleated one is even bluer than the nucleus of IC 225. The asymmetric line profiles of higher-order Balmer lines indicate that the emission lines are bluer shifted relative to the absorption lines, suggesting that the line emission arises from the off-center core, whose nature is a metal-rich Hii region. To the best of our knowledge, it is the first high-metallicity Hii region detected in a dwarf elliptical galaxy.

Seyfert Galaxies with Circumnuclear/Nuclear Starbursts

In this paper, we present our preliminary results on Seyfert galaxies with circumnuclear/nuclear starburst(SB) activity. We have searched the recent available literature and found 76 active galaxies with clear evidence of nuclear SB activity, among which 16 are Seyfert 1s, 51 Seyfert 2s, and 9 LINERs. After studying the 51 Seyfert 2s, we find that those Seyfert 2s with hidden Seyfert 1 nuclei, have similar Infrared-Radio properties as Seyfert 1 galaxies, and are different from "real" Seyfert 2s without a hidden Seyfert 1 nucleus. The later are similar to starburst galaxies.

Nuclear obscuration and scattering in Seyfert 2 galaxies

We study the relation between gaseous absorbing column density (N$_{\rm H}$), infrared colors and detectability of the broad lines in a large sample of Seyfert 2 galaxies(Sy2s). We confirm that Sy2s without polarized broad lines tend to have cooler 60$μ$m/25$μ$m colors; this correlation was previously ascribed to the effect of obscuration towards the nuclear region. We find some evidence that Sy2s without polarized broad lines have larger absorbing column density (N$_{\rm H}$) and that a fraction of them are characterized by dust lanes crossing their nuclei. However, we find that the IR colors do not correlate with N$_{\rm H}$, in disagreement with the obscuration scenario. Also, Sy2s without polarized broad lines follow the same radio-FIR relation as normal and starburst galaxies, at variance with Sy2s with polarized broad lines. These results indicate that the lack of broad lines in the polarized spectrum of Sy2s is mostly due to the contribution/dilution from the host galaxy or from a circumnuclear starburst, though at a lower extent the obscuration toward the nuclear region also plays a role.
