On an equation arising by reduction of the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchy

A seventh order ordinary differential equation (ODE) arising by reduction of the Drinfeld-Sokolov hierarchyis shown to be identical to a similarity reduction of an equationin the hierarchy of Sawada-Kotera.We also exhibit its link with a particular F-VI,a fourth order ODE isolated by Cosgrove which is likely to define a higher order Painlev\'e function.

New algebraically solvable systems of two autonomous first-order ordinary differential equations with purely quadratic right-hand sides

We identify many new solvable subcases of the general dynamical system characterized by two autonomous first-order ordinary differential equations with purely quadratic right-hand sides; the solvable character of these dynamical systems amounting to the possibility to obtain the solution of their initial value problem via algebraic operations. Equivalently---by considering the analytic continuation of these systems to complex time---their algebraically solvable character corresponds to the fact that their general solution is either singlevalued or features only a finite number of algebraic branch points as functions of complex time (the independent variable). Thus our results provide a major enlargement of the class of solvable systems beyond those with singlevalued general solution identified by Garnier about 60 years ago. An interesting property of several of these new dynamical systems is the elementary character of their general solution, identifiable as the roots of a polynomial with explicitly obtainable time-dependent coefficients. We also mention that, via a well-known time-dependent change of (dependent and independent) variables featuring the imaginary parameter $% \mathbf{i} \omega $ (with $\omega $ an arbitrary strictly positive real number), autonomous variants can be explicitly exhibited of each of the algebraically solvable models we identify: variants which all feature the remarkable property to be isochronous, i.e. their generic solution is periodic with a period that is a fixed integer multiple of the basic period $T=2\pi/\omega$.

A quantum mechanical insight into SN2 reactions: Semiclassical initial value representation calculations of vibrational features of the Cl$^-$--CH$_3$Cl pre-reaction complex with the VENUS suite of codes

The role of vibrational excitation of reactants in driving reactions involving polyatomic species has been often studied by means of classical or quasi-classical trajectory simulations. We propose a different approach based on investigation of vibrational features of the Cl$^-$--CH$_3$Cl pre-reaction complex for the Cl$^-$ + CH$_3$Cl SN$_2$ reaction. We present vibrational power spectra and frequency estimates for the title pre-reaction complex calculated at the level of classical, semiclassical, and second-order vibrational perturbation theory on a pre-existing analytical potential energy surface. The main goals of the paper are the study of anharmonic effects and understanding of vibrational couplings that permit energy transfer between the collisional kinetic energy and the internal vibrations of the reactants. We provide both classical and quantum pictures of intermode couplings and show that the SN2 mechanism is favored by the coupling of a C--Cl bend involving the Cl$^-$ projectile with the CH$_3$ rocking motion of the target molecule. We also illustrate how the routines needed for semiclassical vibrational spectroscopy simulations can be interfaced in a user-friendly way to pre-existing molecular dynamics software. In particular, we present an implementation of semiclassical spectroscopy into the VENUS suite of codes, thus providing a useful computational tool for users who are not experts of semiclassical dynamics.

Towards a living earth simulator

The Living Earth Simulator (LES) is one of the core components of the FuturICT architecture. It will work as a federation of methods, tools, techniques and facilities supporting all of the FuturICT simulation-related activities to allow and encourage interactive exploration and understanding of societal issues. Society-relevant problems will be targeted by leaning on approaches based on complex systems theories and data science in tight interaction with the other components of FuturICT. The LES will evaluate and provide answers to real-world questions by taking into account multiple scenarios. It will build on present approaches such as agent-based simulation and modeling, multiscale modelling, statistical inference, and data mining, moving beyond disciplinary borders to achieve a new perspective on complex social systems.

A search for gravitational waves associated with the August 2006 timing glitch of the Vela pulsar

The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasi-normal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two co-located Hanford gravitational wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a pulsar timing glitch. No gravitational wave detection candidate was found. We place Bayesian 90% confidence upper limits of 6.3e-21 to 1.4e-20 on the peak intrinsic strain amplitude of gravitational wave ring-down signals, depending on which spherical harmonic mode is excited. The corresponding range of energy upper limits is 5.0e44 to 1.3e45 erg.

Calibration of the LIGO Gravitational Wave Detectors in the Fifth Science Run

The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is a network of three detectors built to detect local perturbations in the space-time metric from astrophysical sources. These detectors, two in Hanford, WA and one in Livingston, LA, are power-recycled Fabry-Perot Michelson interferometers. In their fifth science run (S5), between November 2005 and October 2007, these detectors accumulated one year of triple coincident data while operating at their designed sensitivity. In this paper, we describe the calibration of the instruments in the S5 data set, including measurement techniques and uncertainty estimation.

First search for gravitational waves from the youngest known neutron star

We present a search for periodic gravitational waves from the neutron star in the supernova remnant Cassiopeia A. The search coherently analyzes data in a 12-day interval taken from the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory. It searches gravitational wave frequencies from 100 to 300 Hz, and covers a wide range of first and second frequency derivatives appropriate for the age of the remnant and for different spin-down mechanisms. No gravitational wave signal was detected. Within the range of search frequencies, we set 95% confidence upper limits of 0.7--1.2e-24 on the intrinsic gravitational wave strain, 0.4--4e-4 on the equatorial ellipticity of the neutron star, and 0.005--0.14 on the amplitude of r-mode oscillations of the neutron star. These direct upper limits beat indirect limits derived from energy conservation and enter the range of theoretical predictions involving crystalline exotic matter or runaway r-modes. This is the first gravitational wave search to present upper limits on r-modes.

Elliptic solutions of isentropic ideal compressible fluid flow in (3+1) dimensions

A modified version of the conditional symmetry method, together with the classical method, is used to obtain new classes of elliptic solutions of the isentropic ideal compressible fluid flow in (3+1) dimensions. We focus on those types of solutions which are expressed in terms of the Weierstrass P-functions of Riemann invariants. These solutions are of special interest since we show that they remain bounded even when these invariants admit the gradient catastrophe. We describe in detail a procedure for constructing such classes of solutions. Finally, we present several examples of an application of our approach which includes bumps, kinks and multi-wave solutions.

Beating the spin-down limit on gravitational wave emission from the Crab pulsar

We present direct upper limits on gravitational wave emission from the Crab pulsar using data from the first nine months of the fifth science run of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO). These limits are based on two searches. In the first we assume that the gravitational wave emission follows the observed radio timing, giving an upper limit on gravitational wave emission that beats indirect limits inferred from the spin-down and braking index of the pulsar and the energetics of the nebula. In the second we allow for a small mismatch between the gravitational and radio signal frequencies and interpret our results in the context of two possible gravitational wave emission mechanisms.

Sur la "solution analytique ge'ne'rale" d'une e'quation diffe'rentielle chaotique du troisie`me ordre

Even if it is nonintegrable, a differential equation may nevertheless admit particular solutions which are globally analytic. On the example of the dynamical system of Kuramoto and Sivashinsky, which is generically chaotic and presents a high physical interest, we review various methods, all based on the structure of singularities, allowing us to characterize the analytic solution which depends on the largest possible number of constants of integration.

Integration of a generalized Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian

The generalized Hénon-Heiles Hamiltonian $H=1/2(P_X^2+P_Y^2+c_1X^2+c_2Y^2)+aXY^2-bX^3/3$ with an additional nonpolynomial term $μY^{-2}$ is known to be Liouville integrable for three sets of values of $(b/a,c_1,c_2)$. It has been previously integrated by genus two theta functions only in one of these cases. Defining the separating variables of the Hamilton-Jacobi equations, we succeed here, in the two other cases, to integrate the equations of motion with hyperelliptic functions.

Perturbative methods for the Painlevé test

There exist many situations where an ordinary differential equation admits a movable critical singularity which the test of Kowalevski and Gambier fails to detect. Some possible reasons are: existence of negative Fuchs indices, insufficient number of Fuchs indices, multiple family, absence of an algebraic leading order. Mainly giving examples, we present the methods which answer all these questions. They are all based on the theorem of perturbations of Poincaré and computerizable.

Various truncations in Painlevé analysis of PDEs

The ``truncation procedure'' initiated by Weiss et al. is best understood as a Darboux transformation. If it leads to the Lax pair of the PDE under study, the Bäcklund transformation follows by an elimination, thus proving the integrability. We present the state of the art of this powerful technique. The easy situations were all handled by the WTC one-family truncation and its homographically invariant version. An updated version of this method has been recently developed, which is now able to handle the Kaup-Kupershmidt and Tzitzéica equations. It incorporates a new feature, namely the distinction between two entire functions usually mingled, which are shown to be linked by formulae established by Gambier for his classification.

On the exact solutions of the Bianchi IX cosmological model in the proper time

It has recently been argued that there might exist a four-parameter analytic solution to the Bianchi IX cosmological model, which would extend the three-parameter solution of Belinskii et al. to one more arbitrary constant. We perform the perturbative Painlev\'e test in the proper time variable, and confirm the possible existence of such an extension.
