iCTGAN--An Attack Mitigation Technique for Random-vector Attack on Accelerometer-based Gait Authentication Systems

A recent study showed that commonly (vanilla) studied implementations of accelerometer-based gait authentication systems ($v$ABGait) are susceptible to random-vector attack. The same study proposed a beta noise-assisted implementation ($β$ABGait) to mitigate the attack. In this paper, we assess the effectiveness of the random-vector attack on both $v$ABGait and $β$ABGait using three accelerometer-based gait datasets. In addition, we propose $i$ABGait, an alternative implementation of ABGait, which uses a Conditional Tabular Generative Adversarial Network. Then we evaluate $i$ABGait's resilience against the traditional zero-effort and random-vector attacks. The results show that $i$ABGait mitigates the impact of the random-vector attack to a reasonable extent and outperforms $β$ABGait in most experimental settings.

GANTouch: An Attack-Resilient Framework for Touch-based Continuous Authentication System

Previous studies have shown that commonly studied (vanilla) implementations of touch-based continuous authentication systems (V-TCAS) are susceptible to active adversarial attempts. This study presents a novel Generative Adversarial Network assisted TCAS (G-TCAS) framework and compares it to the V-TCAS under three active adversarial environments viz. Zero-effort, Population, and Random-vector. The Zero-effort environment was implemented in two variations viz. Zero-effort (same-dataset) and Zero-effort (cross-dataset). The first involved a Zero-effort attack from the same dataset, while the second used three different datasets. G-TCAS showed more resilience than V-TCAS under the Population and Random-vector, the more damaging adversarial scenarios than the Zero-effort. On average, the increase in the false accept rates (FARs) for V-TCAS was much higher (27.5% and 21.5%) than for G-TCAS (14% and 12.5%) for Population and Random-vector attacks, respectively. Moreover, we performed a fairness analysis of TCAS for different genders and found TCAS to be fair across genders. The findings suggest that we should evaluate TCAS under active adversarial environments and affirm the usefulness of GANs in the TCAS pipeline.

A Novel Optimized Decomposition Method for Smoluchowski's Aggregation Equation

The Smoluchowski's aggregation equation has applications in the field of bio-pharmaceuticals \cite{zidar2018characterisation}, financial sector \cite{PUSHKIN2004571}, aerosol science \cite{shen2020efficient} and many others. Several analytical, numerical and semi-analytical approaches have been devised to calculate the solutions of this equation. Semi-analytical methods are commonly employed since they do not require discretization of the space variable. The article deals with the introduction of a novel semi-analytical technique called the optimized decomposition method (ODM) (see \cite{odibat2020optimized}) to compute solutions of this relevant integro-partial differential equation. The series solution computed using ODM is shown to converge to the exact solution. The theoretical results are validated using numerical examples for scientifically relevant aggregation kernels for which the exact solutions are available. Additionally, the ODM approximated results are compared with the solutions obtained using the Adomian decomposition method (ADM) in \cite{singh2015adomian}. The novel method is shown to be superior to ADM for the examples considered and thus establishes as an improved and efficient method for solving the Smoluchowski's equation.

Existence and Uniqueness of Mass Conserving Solutions to Safronov-Dubovski Coagulation Equation for Product Kernel

The article presents the existence and mass conservation of solution for the discrete Safronov-Dubovski coagulation equation for the product coalescence coefficients $ϕ$ such that $ϕ_{i,j} \leq ij$ $\forall$ $i,j \in \mathbb{N}$. Both conservative and non-conservative truncated systems are used to analyse the infinite system of ODEs. In the conservative case, Helly's selection theorem is used to prove the global existence while for the non-conservative part, we make use of the refined version of De la Vallée-Poussin theorem to establish the existence. Further, it is shown that these solutions conserve density. Finally, the solutions are shown to be unique when the kernel $ϕ_{i,j} \leq \text{min}\{i^η,j^η\}$ where $η\in [0,2]$.

Theoretical analysis of a discrete population balance model for sum kernel

The Oort-Hulst-Safronov equation, shorterned as OHS is a relevant population balance model. Its discrete form, developed by Dubovski is the main focus of our analysis. The existence and density conservation are established for the coagulation rate $V_{i,j} \leqs (i+j),$ $\forall i,j \in \mathbb{N}$. Differentiability of the solutions is investigated for the kernel $V_{i,j} \leqs i^α+j^α$ where $0 \leqs α\leqs 1$. The article finally deals with the uniqueness result that requires the boundedness of the second moment.

Sparse Image based Navigation Architecture to Mitigate the need of precise Localization in Mobile Robots

Traditional simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) methods focus on improvement in the robot's localization under environment and sensor uncertainty. This paper, however, focuses on mitigating the need for exact localization of a mobile robot to pursue autonomous navigation using a sparse set of images. The proposed method consists of a model architecture - RoomNet, for unsupervised learning resulting in a coarse identification of the environment and a separate local navigation policy for local identification and navigation. The former learns and predicts the scene based on the short term image sequences seen by the robot along with the transition image scenarios using long term image sequences. The latter uses sparse image matching to characterise the similarity of frames achieved vis-a-vis the frames viewed by the robot during the mapping and training stage. A sparse graph of the image sequence is created which is then used to carry out robust navigation purely on the basis of visual goals. The proposed approach is evaluated on two robots in a test environment and demonstrates the ability to navigate in dynamic environments where landmarks are obscured and classical localization methods fail.

Singularity formation in radiating star with dark energy background

In this paper, we considered the gravitational collapse of a symmetric radiating star consisting of perfect fluid (baryonic) in the background of dark energy (DE) with general equation of state. The effect of DE on the singularity formation has been discussed first separately (only DE present) and then combination of both baryonic and DE interaction. We have also showed that DE components play important role in the formation of Black-Hole(BH). In some cases the collapse of radiating star leads to black hole formation and in other cases it forms Naked-Singularity(or, eternally collapse). The present work is in itself remarkable to describe the effect of dark energy on singularity formation in radiating star.

Identification of electrostatic two-stream instabilities associated with a laser-driven collisionless shock in a multicomponent plasma

Electrostatic two-stream instabilities play essential roles in an electrostatic collisionless shock formation. They are a key dissipation mechanism and result in ion heating and acceleration. Since the number and energy of the shock-accelerated ions depend on the instabilities, precise identification of the active instabilities is important. Two-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations in a multicomponent plasma reveal ion reflection and acceleration at the shock front, excitation of a longitudinally propagating electrostatic instability due to a non-oscillating component of the electrostatic field in the upstream region of the shock, and generation of up- and down-shifted velocity components within the expanding-ion components. A linear analysis of the instabilities for a C2H3Cl plasma using the one-dimensional electrostatic plasma dispersion function, which includes electron and ion temperature effects, shows that the most unstable mode is the electrostatic ion-beam two-stream instability (IBTI), which is weakly dependent on the existence of electrons. The IBTI is excited by velocity differences between the expanding protons and carbon-ion populations. There is an electrostatic electron-ion two-stream instability with a much smaller growth rate associated with a population of protons reflecting at the shock. The excitation of the fast-growing IBTI associated with laser-driven collisionless shock increases the brightness of a quasi-monoenergetic ion beam.

Laser astrophysics experiment on the amplification of magnetic fields by shock-induced interfacial instabilities

Laser experiments are becoming established as a new tool for astronomical research that complements observations and theoretical modeling. Localized strong magnetic fields have been observed at a shock front of supernova explosions. Experimental confirmation and identification of the physical mechanism for this observation are of great importance in understanding the evolution of the interstellar medium. However, it has been challenging to treat the interaction between hydrodynamic instabilities and an ambient magnetic field in the laboratory. Here, we developed an experimental platform to examine magnetized Richtmyer-Meshkov instability (RMI). The measured growth velocity was consistent with the linear theory, and the magnetic-field amplification was correlated with RMI growth. Our experiment validated the turbulent amplification of magnetic fields associated with the shock-induced interfacial instability in astrophysical conditions for the first time. Experimental elucidation of fundamental processes in magnetized plasmas is generally essential in various situations such as fusion plasmas and planetary sciences.

Spherically Symmetric Gravitational Collapse Of Inhomogeneous Dust Cloud In The Background Of Dark Energy

The present paper deals with the gravitational collapse of an inhomogeneous spherical star consisting of dust fluid in the background of dark energy components with linear equation of state. We discussed the development of apparent horizon to investigate the black-hole formation in gravitational collapsing process. The collapsing process is examined first separately for dust cloud and dark energy and then under the combined effect of dust interacting with dark energy. It is obtained that when only dust cloud or dark energy is present the collapse leads to the formation of black-hole under certain conditions. When both of them are present, collapsing star does not form black-hole. However when dark energy is considered as cosmological constant, the collapse leads to black hole formation.

Collective Intelligence: Decentralized Learning for Android Malware Detection in IoT with Blockchain

The widespread significance of Android IoT devices is due to its flexibility and hardware support features which revolutionized the digital world by introducing exciting applications almost in all walks of daily life, such as healthcare, smart cities, smart environments, safety, remote sensing, and many more. Such versatile applicability gives incentive for more malware attacks. In this paper, we propose a framework which continuously aggregates multiple user trained models on non-overlapping data into single model. Specifically for malware detection task, (i) we propose a novel user (local) neural network (LNN) which trains on local distribution and (ii) then to assure the model authenticity and quality, we propose a novel smart contract which enable aggregation process over blokchain platform. The LNN model analyzes various static and dynamic features of both malware and benign whereas the smart contract verifies the malicious applications both for uploading and downloading processes in the network using stored aggregated features of local models. In this way, the proposed model not only improves malware detection accuracy using decentralized model network but also model efficacy with blockchain. We evaluate our approach with three state-of-the-art models and performed deep analyses of extracted features of the relative model.

Defending Touch-based Continuous Authentication Systems from Active Adversaries Using Generative Adversarial Networks

Previous studies have demonstrated that commonly studied (vanilla) touch-based continuous authentication systems (V-TCAS) are susceptible to population attack. This paper proposes a novel Generative Adversarial Network assisted TCAS (G-TCAS) framework, which showed more resilience to the population attack. G-TCAS framework was tested on a dataset of 117 users who interacted with a smartphone and tablet pair. On average, the increase in the false accept rates (FARs) for V-TCAS was much higher (22%) than G-TCAS (13%) for the smartphone. Likewise, the increase in the FARs for V-TCAS was 25% compared to G-TCAS (6%) for the tablet.

A note on synthesizing geodesic based contact curves

The paper focuses on synthesizing optimal contact curves that can be used to ensure a rolling constraint between two bodies in relative motion. We show that geodesic based contact curves generated on both the contacting surfaces are sufficient conditions to ensure rolling. The differential geodesic equations, when modified, can ensure proper disturbance rejection in case the system of interacting bodies is perturbed from the desired curve. A corollary states that geodesic curves are generated on the surface if rolling constraints are satisfied. Simulations in the context of in-hand manipulations of the objects are used as examples.

Blockchain based Privacy-Preserved Federated Learning for Medical Images: A Case Study of COVID-19 CT Scans

Medical health care centers are envisioned as a promising paradigm to handle the massive volume of data of COVID-19 patients using artificial intelligence (AI). Traditionally, AI techniques often require centralized data collection and training the model in a single organization, which is most common weakness due to the privacy and security of raw data communication. To solve this challenging task, we propose a blockchain-based federated learning framework that provides collaborative data training solutions by coordinating multiple hospitals to train and share encrypted federated models without leakage of data privacy. The blockchain ledger technology provides the decentralization of federated learning model without any central server. The proposed homomorphic encryption scheme encrypts and decrypts the gradients of model to preserve the privacy. More precisely, the proposed framework: i) train the local model by a novel capsule network to segmentation and classify COVID-19 images, ii) then use the homomorphic encryption scheme to secure the local model that encrypts and decrypts the gradients, and finally the model is shared over a decentralized platform through proposed blockchain-based federated learning algorithm. The integration of blockchain and federated learning leads to a new paradigm for medical image data sharing in the decentralized network. The conducted experimental resultsdemonstrate the performance of the proposed scheme.

Open strange meson $K^\pm_1$ in hot and dense nuclear matter

Using the unification of the chiral SU(3) model and QCD sum rules, we deduce the in-medium properties of $K^\pm_1$ meson. Within the chiral SU(3) model, medium modified gluon and quark condensates are evaluated through their interactions with the scalar fields ($σ$, $ζ$, $δ$, and $χ$). These condensates are further used as input in the Borel transformed equations of QCD sum rules to evaluate the in-medium mass of strange $K^\pm_1$ meson. The in-medium property of the above meson can be used to study the restoration of chiral symmetry in nuclear matter.

Ion acceleration at two collisionless shocks in a multicomponent plasma

Intense laser-plasma interactions are an essential tool for the laboratory study of ion acceleration at a collisionless shock. With two-dimensional particle-in-cell calculations of a multicomponent plasma we observe two electrostatic collisionless shocks at two distinct longitudinal positions when driven with a linearly-polarized laser at normalized laser vector potential a0 that exceeds 10. Moreover, these shocks, associated with protons and carbon ions, show a power-law dependence on a0 and accelerate ions to different velocities in an expanding upstream with higher flux than in a single-component hydrogen or carbon plasma. This results from an electrostatic ion two-stream instability caused by differences in the charge-to-mass ratio of different ions. Particle acceleration in collisionless shocks in multicomponent plasma are ubiquitous in space and astrophysics, and these calculations identify the possibility for studying these complex processes in the laboratory.

Trends in Vehicle Re-identification Past, Present, and Future: A Comprehensive Review

Vehicle Re-identification (re-id) over surveillance camera network with non-overlapping field of view is an exciting and challenging task in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Due to its versatile applicability in metropolitan cities, it gained significant attention. Vehicle re-id matches targeted vehicle over non-overlapping views in multiple camera network. However, it becomes more difficult due to inter-class similarity, intra-class variability, viewpoint changes, and spatio-temporal uncertainty. In order to draw a detailed picture of vehicle re-id research, this paper gives a comprehensive description of the various vehicle re-id technologies, applicability, datasets, and a brief comparison of different methodologies. Our paper specifically focuses on vision-based vehicle re-id approaches, including vehicle appearance, license plate, and spatio-temporal characteristics. In addition, we explore the main challenges as well as a variety of applications in different domains. Lastly, a detailed comparison of current state-of-the-art methods performances over VeRi-776 and VehicleID datasets is summarized with future directions. We aim to facilitate future research by reviewing the work being done on vehicle re-id till to date.
