Fortuity beyond counting: an explicit construction

We reconsider the "fortuity'' mechanism in the D1D5 CFT focusing on the K3 symmetric orbifold. Going beyond the counting of BPS states, we investigate perturbatively how the explicit form of the BPS cohomologies is modified by the twist-two deformations. We calculate the action of the supercharges in the sector $(h,j)=(1,0)$ for different values of the central charge and derive explicit expressions for the primary states. Equipped with this information, we compare some protected three-point couplings in the free and the gravity regime. We show that agreement between the two descriptions imposes non-trivial constraints on the identification of monotone and fortuitous states. In particular, we argue that the map relating theories with different values of the central charge must and can be defined so as to commute with the supercharges that define the cochain complex. We then study the three-point correlators between the fortuitous and monotone states identified in our analysis to assess whether the two sectors are dynamically decoupled. We find an explicit example of a non-vanishing coupling between two monotone and a fortuitous state, providing evidence that the two sectors are dynamically connected.

"Waveforms" at the Horizon

We study perturbations induced by a light particle scattering off a Schwarzschild black hole. Exploiting recent results for the wave propagation in this geometry, we derive the fields that this process induces on the horizon to leading order in the post-Minkowskian (PM) regime, when the light probe is far from the black hole. We then use these results to calculate the fluxes of energy and angular momentum that enter the black hole. We consider the effects due to gravitational, electromagnetic and scalar radiation, finding agreement with recent computations of the absorbed energy, while the absorbed angular momentum provides a new PM result.

Multi-particle correlators with higher KK modes I: a bootstrap approach

We bootstrap tree-level supergravity four-point correlators on AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ with one external half-BPS double-particle operator and three half-BPS single-particle operators. Our only input is the consistency of the operator product expansion of $SU(N)$ ${\cal N} = 4$ super Yang-Mills theory at large $N$ and large 't Hooft coupling. Even though the leading order OPE does not close on double-particle operators, but involves triple-particle operators, the CFT data of the double-particle operators, both long and protected, is sufficient to uniquely fix the correlators. We then verify that our results for the four-point correlators with one double-particle and three single-particle operators are reproduced by the appropriate double-particle limit of the five-point tree-level correlators of single-particle operators, with arbitrary Kaluza-Klein levels, recently conjectured in arXiv:2507.14124. Our study thus provides further evidence for the latter result.

Reconstructing the Gravitational Waveform from Its Probe Limit

Gravitational observables for binary systems exhibit a simple polynomial dependence on the masses $m_1$, $m_2$ of the two scattering objects when they are written in terms of the appropriate kinematic variables in the post-Minkowskian (PM) regime. We point out that this property, combined with particle interchange symmetry, allows one to reconstruct the leading and subleading PM waveforms from their probe limit, $m_1 \gg m_2$. As an application, focusing on their re-expansion in the small-velocity or post-Newtonian (PN) regime, we calculate the probe-limit waveforms up to 10PN, and then exploit this observation to deduce from them the waveforms for generic masses in the center-of-mass frame up to 5PN. To this end, we employ both the amplitude-based waveform integrands and the tail formula. This combined approach simplifies substantially the PN expansion of the full subleading PM waveform.

Four-point correlators with BPS bound states in AdS$_3$ and AdS$_5$

We consider heavy-heavy-light-light (HHLL) correlators in AdS/CFT, focussing on the D1D5 CFT$_2$ and the ${\cal N}= 4$ super Yang-Mills theory. Out of the lightest $1/2$-BPS operator in the spectrum, $O$, we construct a particular heavy operator $O_H$ given by a coherent superposition of multi-particle operators $O^n$, and study the HHLL correlator. When $n$ is of order of the central charge, we show that the bulk equation that computes our boundary HHLL correlators is always a Heun equation. By assuming that the form of the correlator can be continued to the regime where $n$ is ${\mathcal O}(1)$, we first reproduce the known single-particle four-point correlators for $n=1$ and then predict new results for the multi-particle correlators $\langle O^n O^n O O\rangle$. Explicit expressions can be written entirely in terms of $n$-loop ladder integrals and their derivatives, and we provide them for $n=2$ and $n=3$ both in position and in Mellin space. Focussing on the AdS$_5$ case, we study the OPE expansion of these multi-particle correlators and show that several consistency relations with known CFT data are non-trivially satisfied. Finally, we extract new CFT data for double and triple-particle long operators.

Holographic correlators with BPS bound states in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ SYM

We compute 4-point correlators in $\mathcal{N} = 4$ $SU(N)$ Super-Yang-Mills with both single and double-particle $1/2$-BPS operators in the regime of large 't Hooft coupling and large $N$. In particular we give explicit expressions up to $\mathcal{O}(1/N^4)$ for the lightest correlator with two double-particle and two single-particle operators built out of the stress-tensor multiplet. Our derivation makes use of the general holographic prescription applied to an asymptotically AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ geometry that describes a coherent superposition of multi-graviton operators. The final result can be written in terms of a natural generalisation of the standard D-functions and takes a compact form in Mellin space. The correlator we compute here is the simplest of a more general class of correlators where two inserted operators are multi-particles. These can be derived with the same approach, suggesting that the structure found here is general.

Gravitational wave forms for extreme mass ratio collisions from supersymmetric gauge theories

We study the wave form emitted by a particle moving along an arbitrary (in general open) geodesic of the Schwarzschild geometry. The mathematical problem can be phrased in terms of quantities in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories that can be calculated by using localization and the AGT correspondence. In particular through this mapping, the post-Newtonian expansion of the wave form is expressed as a double instanton sum with rational coefficients that resums all tail contributions into Gamma functions and exponentials. The formulae we obtain are valid for generic values of the orbital quantum numbers $\ell$ and $m$. For $\ell=2,3$ we check explicitly that our results agree with the small mass ratio limit of the wave forms derived in the Multipole Post-Minkowskian and the amplitudes approaches. We show how the so-called tail and tail of tail contributions to the wave form arise in our approach. Finally, we derive a universal formula for the soft limit of the wave form that resums all logarithmic divergent terms of the form $\omega^{n-1} (\log \omega)^n$.

Revisiting gravitational angular momentum and mass dipole losses in the eikonal framework

We review the description of classical gravitational scatterings of two compact objects by means of the eikonal framework. This encodes via scattering amplitudes both the motion of the bodies and the gravitational-wave signals that such systems produce. As an application, we combine the next-to-leading post-Minkowskian (PM) waveform derived in the post-Newtonian (PN) limit with the 4PM static loss due to the linear memory effect to reproduce known results for the total angular mometum loss in the center-of-mass frame up to $\mathcal O(G^4)$ and 2.5PN order. We also provide similar expressions for the change in the system's mass dipole, discussing the subtleties related to its sensitivity to the Coulombic components of the field and to the nonlinear memory effect.

Post-Newtonian Multipoles from the Next-to-Leading Post-Minkowskian Gravitational Waveform

We consider the frequency-domain LO and NLO post-Minkowskian (PM) waveforms obtained from the tree-level and one-loop amplitudes describing the scattering of two massive scalar objects and the emission of one graviton. We explicitly calculate their post-Newtonian (PN) limit obtaining an expansion up to the third subleading PN order in all ingredients: the tree-level amplitude, the odd and even parts of the real one-loop kernel, and the Compton or "rescattering" cuts, thus reaching 3PN precision for the latter. We provide explicit expressions for the multipole decomposition of these results in the center-of-mass frame and compare them with the results obtained from the classical Multipolar post-Minkowskian (MPM) method. We find perfect agreement between the two, once the BMS supertranslation frame is properly adjusted and the infrared divergences due to rescattering are suitably subtracted in dimensional regularization. This shows that the approach proposed in arXiv:2312.07452 can be applied beyond the soft-regime ensuring the agreement between amplitude-based and MPM results for generic frequencies.

An eikonal-inspired approach to the gravitational scattering waveform

We revisit the amplitude-based derivation of gravitational waveform for the scattering of two scalar black holes at subleading post-Minkowskian (PM) order. We take an eikonal-inspired approach to the two-massive-particle cut needed in the KMOC framework, as highlighted in arXiv:2308.02125, and show that its effect is to implement a simple change of frame. This clarifies one of the points raised in arXiv:2309.14925 when comparing with the post-Newtonian (PN) results. We then provide an explicit PM expression for the waveform in the soft limit, $\omega\to0$, including the first non-universal, $\omega\log\omega$, contribution. Focusing on this regime, we show that the small-velocity limit of our result agrees with the soft limit of the PN waveform of arXiv:2309.14925, provided that the two quantities are written in the same asymptotic frame. Performing the BMS supertranslation that, as discussed in arXiv:2201.11607, is responsible for the $\mathcal O(G)$ static contribution to the asymptotic field employed in the PN literature, we find agreement between the amplitude-based and the PN soft waveform up to and including $G^3/c^5$ order.

Microstrata

Microstrata are the non-extremal analogues of superstrata: they are smooth, non-extremal (non-BPS) solitonic solutions to IIB supergravity whose deep-throat limits approximate black holes. Using perturbation theory and numerical methods, we construct families of solutions using a consistent truncation to three-dimensional supergravity. The most general families presented here involve two continuous parameters, or amplitudes, and four quantized parameters that set the angular momenta and energy levels. Our solutions are asymptotic to the vacuum of the D1-D5 system: AdS$_3 \times S^3 \times T^4$. Using holography, we show that the they are dual to multi-particle states in the D1-D5 CFT involving a large number of mutually non-BPS supergravitons and we determine the anomalous dimensions of these states from the binding energies in supergravity. These binding energies are uniformly negative and depend non-linearly on the amplitudes of the states. In one family of solutions, smoothness restricts some of the fields to lie on a special locus of the parameter space. Using precision holography we show that this special locus can be identified with the multi-particle states constructed via the standard OPE of the single-particle constituents. Our numerical analysis shows that microstrata are robust at large amplitudes and the solutions can be obtained to very high precision.

The gravitational eikonal: from particle, string and brane collisions to black-hole encounters

Motivated by conceptual problems in quantum theories of gravity, the gravitational eikonal approach, inspired by its electromagnetic predecessor, has been successfully applied to the transplanckian energy collisions of elementary particles and strings since the late eighties, and to string-brane collisions in the past decade. After the direct detection of gravitational waves from black-hole mergers, most of the attention has shifted towards adapting these methods to the physics of black-hole encounters. For such systems, the eikonal exponentiation provides an amplitude-based approach to calculate classical gravitational observables, thus complementing more traditional analytic methods such as the Post-Newtonian expansion, the worldline formalism, or the Effective-One-Body approach. In this review we summarize the main ideas and techniques behind the gravitational eikonal formalism. We discuss how it can be applied in various different physical setups involving particles, strings and branes and then we mainly concentrate on the most recent developments, focusing on massive scalars minimally coupled to gravity, for which we aim at being as self-contained and comprehensive as possible.

The black hole behind the cut

We study the analytic structure of the heavy-heavy-light-light holographic correlators in the supergravity approximation of the AdS$_3 \times S^3$/CFT$_2$ duality. As an explicit example, we derive the correlator where the heavy operator is a classical microstate of the 5D supersymmetric black hole and its dual geometry interpolates as a function of a continuous parameter between global AdS$_3$ and the extremal BTZ black hole. The simplest perturbation of this interpolating geometry by a light field is described by the Heun equation and we exploit the relation of its connection coefficients to the Liouville CFT to analytically compute the correlator in the two limits, focusing in particular on the black hole regime. In this limit we find that the real poles of the correlator become dense and can be approximated by a cut. We show that, when the charges of the heavy state are in the black hole regime, the discontinuity across the cut has complex poles corresponding to the quasi-normal modes of BTZ. This behaviour is qualitatively similar to what is expected for the large central charge limit of a typical black hole microstate

Classical Gravitational Observables from the Eikonal Operator

We propose two possible eikonal operators encoding the effects of classical radiation as coherent states of gravitons and show how to compute from them different classical observables. In the first proposal, only genuinely propagating gravitons are included, while, in the second, zero-frequency modes are added in order to recover the effects of a static gravitational field. We first calculate the radiated energy-momentum and the change in each particle's momentum, or impulse, to 3PM order finding agreement with the literature. We then calculate the angular momentum of the gravitational field after the collision. In order to do so, we adapt the method of reverse unitarity to the presence of derivatives in the operators describing the angular momentum and reproduce the result of~\cite{Manohar:2022dea} obtained by resumming the small-velocity expansion. As a new application, we derive also the variation in each particle's angular momentum up to 3PM: calculating separately field and particle contributions allows us to check the balance laws explicitly. We also show how the eikonal operator encodes the linear-response formula of Bini-Damour by deriving the linear radiation-reaction contribution to the transverse impulse at 4PM.

The eikonal operator at arbitrary velocities I: the soft-radiation limit

Observables related to the real part of the gravitational eikonal, such as the deflection angle and time delay, have been found so far to have a smooth post-Minkowskian (PM) expansion whose validity extends from the non-relativistic to the most extreme ultra-relativistic (UR) regime, which smoothly connects with massless particle collisions. To describe gravitational radiation, the eikonal phase has to be promoted to a unitary operator for which we motivate a proposal and start discussing properties in the soft-radiation limit. A convergent PM expansion is found to only hold below an UR bound (discussed in the GR literature in the seventies) above which a different expansion is instead needed implying, in general, some non-analyticity in Newton's constant. In this extreme UR regime soft radiative observables receive contributions only from gravitons and are therefore universal. This generalises the pattern discussed in \cite{DiVecchia:2020ymx} beyond the elastic case.

Angular momentum of zero-frequency gravitons

By following closely Weinberg's soft theorem, which captures the $1/\omega$ pole contribution to the amplitude for soft graviton emissions ($\omega<\Lambda$) on top of an arbitrary background hard process, we calculate the expectation value of the graviton's angular momentum operator for arbitrary collisions dressed with soft radiation. We find that the result becomes independent of the cutoff $\Lambda$ on the graviton's frequency, effectively localizing at $\omega=0$. In this way, our result captures the contribution to the angular momentum that comes from the zero-frequency modes. Like the soft theorem, our formula has an exact dependence on the kinematics of the hard particles and is only a function of their momenta. As an example, we discuss in some detail the case of the $2 \to 2$ scattering of spinless particles in General Relativity and ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity.

AdS$_3$ holography for non-BPS geometries

By using the approach introduced in arXiv:2107.09677 we construct non-BPS solutions of 6D $(1,0)$ supergravity coupled to two tensor multiplets as a perturbation of AdS$_3\times S^3$. These solutions are both regular and asymptotically AdS$_3\times S^3$, so according to the standard holographic framework they must have a dual CFT interpretation as non-supersymmetric heavy operators of the D1-D5 CFT. We provide quantitative evidence that such heavy CFT operators are bound states of a large number of light BPS operators that are mutually non-BPS.

Holographic correlators with multi-particle states

We derive the connected tree-level part of 4-point holographic correlators in AdS$_3\times S^3\times \mathcal{M}$ (where ${\cal M}$ is $T^4$ or $K3$) involving two multi-trace and two single-trace operators. These connected correlators are obtained by studying a heavy-heavy-light-light correlation function in the formal limit where the heavy operators become light. These results provide a window into higher-point holographic correlators of single-particle operators. We find that the correlators involving multi-trace operators are compactly written in terms of Bloch-Wigner-Ramakrishnan functions -- particular linear combinations of higher-order polylogarithm functions. Several consistency checks of the derived expressions are performed in various OPE channels. We also extract the anomalous dimensions and 3-point couplings of the non-BPS double-trace operators of lowest twist at order $1/c$ and find some positive anomalous dimensions at spin zero and two in the K3 case.
