Switching the Optical Chirality in Magneto-plasmonic Metasurfaces Using Applied Magnetic Fields

Chiral nanophotonic devices are promising candidates for chiral molecules sensing, polarization diverse nanophotonics and display technologies. Active chiral nanophotonic devices, where the optical chirality can be controlled by an external stimulus has triggered great research interest. However, efficient modulation of the optical chirality has been challenging. Here, we demonstrate switching of the extrinsic chirality by applied magnetic fields in a magneto-plasmonic metasurface device based on a magneto-optical oxide material, Ce1Y2Fe5O12 (Ce:YIG). Thanks to the low optical loss and strong magneto-optical effect of Ce:YIG, we experimentally demonstrated a giant and continuous far-field circular dichroism (CD) modulation by applied magnetic fields from -0.65° to +1.9° at 950 nm wavelength under glancing incident conditions. The far field CD modulation is due to both magneto-optical circular dichroism and near-field modulation of the superchiral fields by applied magnetic fields. Finally, we demonstrate magnetic field tunable chiral imaging in millimeter-scale magneto-plasmonic metasurfaces fabricated using self-assembly. Our results provide a new way for achieving planar integrated, large-scale and active chiral metasurfaces for polarization diverse nanophotonics.

Temperature-induced band shift in ferromagnetic Weyl semimetal Co3Sn2S2

The discovery of nonmagnetic Weyl semimetals (WSMs) in TaAs compounds has triggered lots of efforts in finding its magnetic counterpart. While the direct observation of the Weyl nodes and Fermi arcs in a magnetic candidate through angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy is hindered by the complex magnetic domains. The transport features of magnetic WSMs, including negative magnetoresistivity and anomalous Hall conductivity, are not conclusive since these are sensitive to extrinsic factors like defects and disorders in lattice or magnetic ordering. Here, we systematically study the temperature-dependent optical spectra of ferromagnetic Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ experimentally and simulated by first-principles calculations. The many-body correlation effect due to Co $3d$ electrons leads to the renormalization of bands by a factor about 1.33, which is moderate and the description within density functional theory is suitable. As the temperature drops down, the magnetic phase transition happens and the magnetization drives the band shift through exchange splitting. The optical spectra can well detect these changes, including the transitions sensitive and insensitive to the magnetization, and those from the bands around the Weyl nodes. The results strongly support that Co$_3$Sn$_2$S$_2$ is a magnetic WSM and the Weyl nodes can be tuned by magnetization with temperature change.

Unravelling the mechanism of the semiconducting-like behavior and its relation to superconductivity in (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$As)$_{10}$Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$

The temperature-dependence of the in-plane optical properties of (CaFe$_{1-x}$Pt$_{x}$As)$_{10}$Pt$_{3}$As$_{8}$ have been investigated for the undoped ($x=$0) parent compound, and the optimally-doped ($x=$0.1) superconducting material ($T_{c}\simeq$ 12 K) over a wide frequency range. The optical conductivity has been described using two free-carrier (Drude) components, in combination with oscillators to describe interband transitions. At room temperature, the parent compound may be described by a strong, broad Drude term, as well as a narrow, weaker Drude component. Below the structural and magnetic transitions at $\simeq$ 96 and 83 K, respectively, strength is transferred from the free-carrier components into a bound excitation at $\simeq$ 1000 cm$^{-1}$, and the material exhibits semiconducting-like behavior. In the optimally-doped sample, at room temperature the optical properties are again described by narrow and broad Drude responses comparable to the parent compound; however, below $T^\ast \simeq$ 100 K, strength from the narrow Drude is transferred into a newly-emergent low-energy peak at $\simeq$ 120 cm$^{-1}$, which arises from a localization process, resulting in semiconducting-like behavior. Interestingly, below $T_{c}$, this peak also contributes to the superfluid weight, indicating that some localized electrons condense into Cooper pairs; this observation may provide insight into the pairing mechanism in iron-based superconductors.

Observation of topological nodal-line semimetal in YbMnSb2 through optical spectroscopy

The optical properties of YbMnSb2 have been measured in a broad frequency range from room temperature down to 7 K. With decreasing temperature, a flat region develops in the optical conductivity spectra at about 300cm-1, which can not be described by the well-known Drude-Lorentz model. A frequency-independent component has to be introduced to model the measured optical conductivity. Our first-principles calculations show that YbMnSb2 possesses a Dirac nodal line near the Fermi level. A comparison between the measured optical properties and calculated electronic band structures suggests that the frequency-independent optical conductivity component arises from interband transitions near the Dirac nodal line, thus demonstrating that YbMnSb2 is a Dirac nodal line semimetal.

Deviation from canonical collective creep behavior in Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe

We present an extensive study of the vortex dynamics in Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe single crystal, which is prepared by intercalating insulating spacer layer Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OH into FeSe. Absence of fishtail effect and the crossover from elastic to plastic creep are observed similar to the parent compound FeSe. However, when we apply collective creep theory to the magnetic relaxation data, the obtained creep exponent $μ$ is found to be $\sim$ 4.1 much larger than the predicted maximum value. Besides, the elastic creep in the vortex phase diagram of Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe is found to reside only in an extremely small region. Such a large value of $μ$ and the small elastic creep region may be originated from the weakening of coupling between the vortices in neighbouring layers by elongating the layer distance. It may indicate that the vortex structure of Li$_{0.8}$Fe$_{0.2}$OHFeSe is in the crossover regime between elastic Abrikosov vortices to stacks of pancake vortices. Our study also suggests that the intercalated FeSe is a promising candidate for searching intrinsic Josephson phenomena.

Infrared spectroscopic studies of the topological properties in CaMnSb2

We present temperature-dependent infrared spectroscopic studies of CaMnSb2, a proposed threedimensional topological material. The low plasma edge in the reflectivity spectrum and small Drude component in the optical conductivity indicate a very low carrier density. The low-frequency optical conductivity is well described by the superposition of a narrow and a broad Drude terms. Several linear components have been observed in the low-temperature optical conductivity, but none of them extrapolates to the origin, at odds with the optical response expected for three-dimensional Dirac fermions. A series of absorption peaks have been resolved in the high-frequency optical conductivity. The energy of these peaks agrees well with the interband transitions expected for the band structures from first-principles calculations. Intriguingly, the lowest band gap increases with decreasing temperature, mimic the temperature evolution of inverted bands. Furthermore, our theoretical calculations demonstrate the existence of weak coupling between two Sb-chains layers results in the topological trivial surface states in CaMnSb2.

Observation of an Emergent Coherent State in the Iron-Based Superconductor KFe$_\mathbf{2}$As$_\mathbf{2}$

The optical properties of KFe$_2$As$_2$ have been measured for light polarized in the a-b planes over a wide temperature and frequency range. Below $T^\ast\simeq 155$ K, where this material undergoes an incoherent-coherent crossover, we observe a new coherent response emerging in the optical conductivity. A spectral weight analysis suggests that this new feature arises out of high-energy bound states. Below about $T_{\rm FL} \simeq 75$ K the scattering rate for this new feature is quadratic in temperature, indicating a Fermi-liquid response. Theory calculations suggest this crossover is dominated by the $d_{xy}$ orbital. Our results advocate for Kondo-type screening as the mechanism for the orbital-selective incoherent-coherent crossover in hole-overdoped KFe$_2$As$_2$.

Optical study of the antiferromagnetic ordered state in electron-overdoped Ca0.77Nd0.23FeAs2

In Ca1-xRExFeAs2 (RE= rare earth), an antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase as well as a structural transition has been reported, even in the electron-overdoped regime. Here we investigated the temperature-dependent in-plane optical spectroscopy of overdoped Ca0.77Nd0.23FeAs2. Upon entering the AFM state, we found an abrupt reduction of low-frequency (500-2 000 cm-1) spectral weight in the optical conductivity. In sharp contrast to the parent compounds of 122 system, where spin-density-wave gaps have been clearly observed in the AFM state, a gap signature is absent in Ca0.77Nd0.23FeAs2. This may be a consequence of the poor nesting condition between hole and electron pockets. However, a spectral weight analysis shows that the reduced spectral weight at low frequency is transferred to the high frequency range (> 4 000 cm-1), pointing to a localization effect. These observations suggest that the AFM order in Ca0.77Nd0.23FeAs2 is most likely to originate from a localized nature rather than Fermi surface nesting.

Formation of As-As Bond and Its Effect on Absence of Superconductivity in Collapsed Tetragonal Phase of Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 : An Optical Spectroscopy Study

The temperature dependence of in plane optical conductivity has been investigated for Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 which shows a structural transition from tetragonal (T) to collapsed tetragonal(cT) phase at TcT=73 K. Upon entering the cT phase, drastic change characterized by the formation of a midinfrared peak near 3200 cm-1(0.4 eV) in the optical conductivity is observed.Analysis of the spectral weight reveals reduced electron correlation after the cT phase transition.Based on the calculated band structure and simulated optical conductivity, we attribute the new feature around 0.4 eV to the formation of interlayer As-As bond. The As-As bond strongly affects the Fe-As hybridizations, and in turn, drastically changes the Ca0.86Pr0.14Fe2As2 into a nonmagnetic Fermi liquid system without bulk superconductivity in the cT phase.
