Search for the process $e^+e^-\to f_1(1285)$ at the SND detector

In the experiment with the SND detector at the VEPP-2000 $e^+e^-$ collider, a search is performed for the direct production of the $C$-even $f_1(1285)$ resonance in $e^+e^-$ collisions. The analysis is based on data with an integrated luminosity of about 200 pb$^{-1}$, accumulated in the center-of-mass energy range of 1.14--1.46 GeV, of which about 72 pb$^{-1}$ were recorded near the maximum of the $f_1(1285)$ resonance. The $f_1(1285)$ production cross section at the resonance maximum $\sigma(e^+e^-\to f_1)=(31\pm 13\pm 2)$ pb and the branching fraction $B(f_1(1285)\to e^+e^-)=(3.5\pm 1.4\pm 0.3)\times 10^{-9}$ have been measured. The significance of the observation of the $e^+e^-\to f_1(1285)$ process is $2.5\sigma$. Since the significance is low, we also present the upper limits at the 90% confidence level: $\sigma(e^+e^-\to f_1)<48\mbox{ pb}$ and $B(f_1(1285)\to e^+e^-)<5.4\times 10^{-9}$.

Sloshing reduction in a swaying tank with porous baffles using scaled boundary finite element method

Sloshing is an inevitable phenomenon in an ocean-going vessel that can have adverse effects. In this work, the mitigation of sloshing is investigated using multiple thin porous baffles of various configurations in a partially filled swaying tank. The boundary value problem is solved within the framework of a linearized potential flow theory using the scaled boundary finite element method (SBFEM). The flow through the thin porous baffles is assumed to follow Darcy's law. The computational domain is divided into a minimum number of subdomains due to the presence of porous baffles and to ensure star convexity. Higher-order polynomials are used along each subdomain edge to represent the unknown field, i.e., velocity potential. The developed numerical model is validated with the known results in the literature. Subsequently, various results, such as the amplification factor and the forces of the tank wall, are presented and discussed for the effect of configuration, porosity, slosh tank width, depth of baffle submergence and the space between adjacent baffles. From the parametric study, it is observed that top-mounted baffles enhance sloshing suppression by $50\%$ compared to bottom-mounted vertical baffles, considering all sloshing modes. Assessing the overall effectiveness, top-mounted convex baffle configuration emerges as the most efficient configuration for sloshing suppression, achieving a well-balanced reduction across all modes.

Not so fast, not so furious: just magnetic

WD0810-353 is a white dwarf within the 20pc volume around the Sun. Using Gaia astrometric distance and proper motions, and a radial velocity derived from Gaia spectroscopy, it has been predicted that this star will pass within 1pc of the Solar System in about 30kyr. However, WD0810-353 has been also shown to host a magnetic field with strength of the order of 30MG. Its spectrum is therefore not like those of normal DA stars of similar effective temperature. We have obtained and analysed new polarised spectra of the star around Halpha. Our analysis suggests that the visible surface of the star shows two regions of different field strength (~30 and ~45MG, respectively), and opposite polarity. The spectra do not change over a 4 year time span, meaning that either the stellar rotation period is no shorter than several decades, or that the field is symmetric about the rotation axis. Taking into account magnetic shift and splitting, we obtain an estimate of the radial velocity of the star (+83+/- 140km/s); we reject both the value an the claimed precision deduced from the Gaia DR3 spectroscopy (-373.7+/- 8.2km/s), and we conclude that there will probably be no close encounter between the Solar System and WD0810-353. We also reject the suggestion that the star is a hypervelocity runaway star, a survivor of a Type Ia Supernova explosion. It is just a stellar remnant in the Solar neighborhood with a very strong and complex magnetic field.

Properties of neutron star crust with improved nuclear physics: Impact of chiral EFT interactions and experimental nuclear masses

A compressible liquid-drop approach adjusted to uniform matter many-body calculations based on chiral EFT interactions and to the experimental nuclear masses is used to investigate the neutron star crust properties. Eight chiral EFT hamiltonians and a representative phenomenological force (SLy4) are confronted. We show that some properties of the crust, e.g. clusters mass, charge, and asymmetry, are mostly determined by symmetric matter properties close to saturation density and are therefore mainly constrained by experimental nuclear masses, while other properties, e.g., energy per particle, pressure, sound speed, are mostly influenced by low-density predictions in neutron matter, where chiral EFT and phenomenological forces substantially differ.

A simple pseudo-Voigt/complex error function

In this work we present a simple approximation for the Voigt/comp-lex error function based on fitting with set of the exponential functions of form ${\alpha _n}{\left| t \right|^n}{e^{ - {\beta _n}\left| t \right|}}$, where ${\alpha _n}$ and ${\beta _n}$ are the expansion coefficients. The computational test reveals that the largest absolute differences for the real and imaginary parts of the complex error function are $0.037$ and $0.036$, respectively.
