Analyzing Near-Field Intensity Distribution in Subwavelength Gratings through Cylindrical Wave Decomposition

The investigation into the scattering of plane waves by a periodic array of parallel cylinders utilizes the method of cylindrical wave decomposition, thereby reducing the problem complexity to a series of linear algebraic equations. This methodology proves particularly efficacious when the diameter of cylinders is significantly less than the wavelength of incident wave, resulting in a rapid diminution of the solution coefficients as a function of azimuth numbers. Such a reductionist approach facilitates the computation of scattered radiation intensity in near field. Subsequent cross-validation with numerical results corroborates the theoretical findings, showcasing a qualitative concordance between the two. This study underscores the efficacy of cylindrical wave decomposition in simplifying and accurately modeling wave scattering phenomena in structured media.

Scattering of evanescent wave by two cylinders near a flat boundary

Two-dimensional problem of evanescent wave scattering by dielectric or metallic cylinders near the interface between two dielectric media is solved numerically by boundary integral equations method. A special Green function was proposed to avoid the infinite integration. A pattern with a circular and a prolate elliptic cylinders, respectively, is suggested to simulate the sample and the probe in near-field optical microscopy. The energy flux in the midplane of the probe-cylinder is calculated as a function of its position.

Nonlinear phase shift without cascaded second-order processes and third order nonlinearity

The new mechanism for obtaining a nonlinear phase shift has been proposed and the schemes are described for its implementation. As it is shown, the interference of two waves with intensity-dependent amplitude ratio coming from the second harmonic generation should produce the nonlinear phase shift. The sign and amount of nonlinear distortion of a beam wavefront is dependent of the relative phase of the waves that is introduced by the phase element. Calculated value of $n_2^{eff}$ exceeds that connected with cascaded quadratic nonlinearity, at the same conditions.
