Tilted geometry of the pion emission source in Au+Au collisions in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan

We present the first systematic measurement of the tilt of the pion emission source in relativistic Au+Au collisions at center-of-mass energies per nucleon pair, $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 14.5, 17.3 and 27 GeV, using data from the STAR experiment. The tilt angle and final freeze-out eccentricity are extracted through azimuthally sensitive femtoscopy of identical pion pairs. Our results reveal a strong dependence of the tilt parameter on the pair transverse momentum, indicating that the apparent source geometry is strongly coupled to expansion dynamics. Moreover, we observe a rapid decrease of the tilt magnitude with increasing collision energy, consistent with the emission source approaching longitudinal boost invariance at higher energies. These findings demonstrate that the commonly assumed boost-invariant geometry is insufficient and highlight the necessity of exploring the spatial structure of a tilted source, which is required in hydrodynamic models to reproduce features of the longitudinally expanding system, such as the slope of the directed flow. Comparisons with the UrQMD transport model show that it reproduces the overall energy dependence of the tilt magnitude qualitatively, but not quantitatively.

Cold Nuclear Matter Effects on Inclusive $J/\psi$ Production in $p+\text{Au}$ Collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR Experiment

In this paper, a study of cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects is reported based on the new STAR measurement of inclusive $J/\psi$ production in $p+p$ and $p+\text{Au}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s_\text{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, and a combined $J/\psi\rightarrow e^{+}e^{-}$ cross section in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV is provided. Given the long-established presumption that the energy density and the temperature produced in proton-nucleon collisions are insufficient to form QGP droplets, CNM effects in $p+\text{Au}$ collisions are quantified by the nuclear modification factor ($R_{p\text{Au}}$), defined as the ratio of the yield of the inclusive $J/\psi$ in $p+\text{Au}$ collisions to that in $p+p$ collisions, scaled by the average number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The $R_{p\text{Au}}$ is derived as a function of transverse momentum ($p_\text{T}$) in the range 4--12 GeV/$c$ and is averaged within the rapidity ($y$) and azimuthal angle ($\varphi$) coverage of $|y|<1$, $0 \leq \varphi < 2\pi$. The result is consistent with unity, suggesting negligible modification of the yield by CNM effects in this kinematic region. Various model calculations are in agreement with the $R_{p\text{Au}}$ measurement, yet the same calculations are less satisfactory in describing the individual invariant yields from $p+p$ and $p+\text{Au}$ collisions. In the covered kinematic region, this analysis has improved the precision of cross-section and invariant-yield measurements in $p+p$ and $p+\text{Au}$ collisions, respectively, and consequently the $R_{p\text{Au}}$.

Energy Correlators Within Jets in Transversely Polarized Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ GeV

We report the first measurement of one- and two-point energy correlators within jets in transversely polarized proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV, using the STAR detector at RHIC. These observables quantify the energy-weighted angular distribution of single hadrons and hadron pairs within jets, respectively. Sizable spin-dependent asymmetries are observed for $\pi^+$, $\pi^-$, and $\pi^+\pi^-$ pairs, revealing the onset of nonperturbative dynamics at specific angular scales. By projecting the fragmentation dynamics onto Mellin moments, these measurements provide sensitivity to the nucleon's transversity while minimizing uncertainties from nonperturbative fragmentation functions. These results establish energy correlators as a novel and precise probe of nucleon structure and open a promising avenue for three-dimensional nucleon tomography at the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Measurement of jet quenching in O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200$ GeV by the STAR experiment at RHIC

The STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider presents measurements of correlations between charged hadron triggers of high transverse momenta ($7 < p_{\rm T} < 30$ GeV/$c$) with recoiling charged hadrons ($3 < p_{\rm T} < 7$ GeV/$c$) or charged--particle jets ($p_{\rm T, jet} > 8$ GeV/$c$) in event--activity selected O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}=200$ GeV. Yields of associated hadrons and jets, normalized by the number of trigger hadrons, are suppressed by approximately 20\% in high event activity relative to low event activity collisions, with an absence of suppression excluded with high significance. This suppression corresponds to a shift in p_{\rm T} of $0.70\pm0.15~(\rm stat.)~\pm0.10~(\rm syst.)$ GeV/$c$ for large--radius charged--particle jets ($R=0.5$), quantifying their energy redistribution due to final--state interactions. These measurements provide strong evidence for jet quenching in O+O collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}=200$ GeV, offering new insight into quark--gluon plasma formation in small collision systems.

Measurement of inclusive $J/\psi$ polarization in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV at STAR

The first measurement of inclusive J/psi polarization at mid-rapidity (|y^{J/psi}| < 0.8) in 200 GeV Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at sqrt(s_NN) = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC is presented. J/psi mesons are reconstructed through their di-electron (e+e-) decay channel. The polarization parameters (lambda_theta, lambda_phi) are measured as a function of the J/psi transverse momentum (p_T) and collision centrality in both the helicity and the Collins-Soper frames. These polarization parameters are found to be consistent with zero across the measured J/psi p_T range of 0.2 < p_T < 10 GeV/c and across collision centralities within 0-80 percent in both frames. These results are consistent with corresponding measurements p+p collisions at the same collision energy and with transport-model calculations.

Non-Monotonicity of Transverse Momentum Correlations in Au + Au Collisions at RHIC

Event-by-event transverse momentum correlations are sensitive to the equation of state of strongly interacting matter and are expected to exhibit anomalous fluctuations in the vicinity of the QCD critical point. We report the first measurements of two-particle transverse momentum ($p_T$) correlations for mid-rapidity charged particles in fixed-target Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 3.0--7.7$ GeV, measured by the STAR experiment during the Beam Energy Scan (BES) Phase II program. The dependence of the scaled correlator on the number of participating nucleons ($N_{part}$) is studied to test expectations from an independent-source scenario, where the correlations are expected to scale as $1/\sqrt{N_{part}}$. We observe a clear breakdown of the expected scaling behavior in central collisions and identify a statistically significant non-monotonic dependence of the $p_T$ correlations on collision energy, with a significance of approximately $5\sigma$. In contrast, transport-model calculations and data from mid-central collisions yield significances of only $2\sigma$ and $1.4\sigma$, respectively, insufficient to support a claim of non-monotonicity. These observations provide new constraints on the equation of state at high baryon density and may be sensitive to the presence of a QCD critical point.

Inclusive jet cross section in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 200$ and $510$ GeV

Jets are collimated clusters of particles formed by the hadronization of partons following a hard interaction. In proton-proton ($pp$) collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC), jet production is dominated by $gg$ and $qg$ partonic processes, allowing us to directly probe the gluon parton distribution function (PDF) in the proton in a way complementary to deep inelastic scattering. In this paper, we report the double-differential inclusive-jet cross sections as a function of jet transverse momentum, $p_{\rm T}$, and pseudorapidity, $\eta$, at center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s} = 200$ and $510$~GeV, from $pp$ collisions studied with the STAR detector. The jet $p_{\rm T}$ is corrected for underlying event contributions by applying an off-axis cone method. At mid-pseudorapidity, $|\eta| < 0.9$, the kinematic coverage of our data extends to $0.07 < x_{\rm T} \text{ (}= 2p_{\rm T}{} / \sqrt{s} \text{)} < 0.5$ and $0.03 < x_{\rm T} < 0.31$ at $\sqrt{s} = 200$~and 510 GeV, respectively, where the gluon PDF is poorly constrained by the TeV-scale $pp$~($p\bar{p}$) colliders. The inclusive jet cross sections are compared to the next-to-next-to-leading order perturbative quantum chromodynamics calculations using several recent PDF sets as inputs. These results will further constrain the gluon PDF, help tune Monte Carlo generators, and provide critical reference data needed to study the quark-gluon plasma.

Probing Late-Stage Hadronic Interactions at High Baryon Density via $K^{*0}$ Production in the RHIC Beam Energy Scan Program

A precision measurement of the $K^{*0}$ meson yield is reported in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}} = 7.7,\; 11.5,\; 14.6,\; 19.6,$ and $27~\mathrm{GeV}$ using the high-statistics data sample collected by the STAR experiment during the Beam Energy Scan II (BES-II) program at RHIC. The transeverse momentum ($p_{T}$)-integrated yield ratios $(K^{*0} + \overline{K^{*0}})/(K^{+} + K^{-})$ in central collisions show a suppression relative to peripheral collisions at the $(1.7\text{-}3.6)\,\sigma$ level, while a thermal model without final-stage rescattering overpredicts this ratio with a deviation of $(6.9\text{-}8.2)\,\sigma$. These results indicate a loss of the measured $K^{*0}$ signal in central collisions due to re-scattering of its hadronic decay products in the hadronic phase. The $p_{T}$-integrated yield of charged kaons exhibits an approximate scaling with charged-particle multiplicity, independent of collision energy and system size. A similar trend is observed for the short-lived $K^{*0}$ resonance, although significant deviations emerge at lower energies. At BES energies, the $K^{*0}/K$ ratio shows stronger suppression than at the highest RHIC and LHC energies within a given multiplicity bin, particularly in central and mid-central collisions. This behavior is consistent with changes in the effective hadronic interaction cross section and is supported by transport model calculations, which indicate dominant meson-baryon interactions at lower energies and meson-meson interactions at higher energies.

Identified charged hadron production in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 54.4 GeV with the STAR detector

We present results on the production of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $p$, and $\bar{p}$ in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_\mathrm{NN}}$ = 54.4~GeV using the STAR detector at RHIC, at midrapidity ($|y| <$ 0.1). Invariant yields of these particles as a function of transverse momentum are shown. We determine bulk properties such as integrated particle yields ($dN/dy$), mean transverse momentum ($\langle p_{T} \rangle$), particle ratios, which provide insight into the particle production mechanisms. Additionally, the kinetic freezeout parameters ($T_\text{kin}$ and $\langle \beta_{T} \rangle$), which provide information about the dynamics of the system at the time of freezeout, are obtained. The Bjorken energy density ($\epsilon_{\rm{BJ}}$), which gives an estimate of the energy density in the central rapidity region of the collision zone at the formation time $\tau$, is calculated and presented as a function of multiplicity for various energies. The results are compared with those from the models such as A Multi-Phase Transport (AMPT) and Heavy Ion Jet INteraction Generator (HIJING) for further insights.

First observation of deuteron-{\Lambda} correlations at RHIC

Precise experimental information on hyperon-nucleon interactions is scarce but of paramount importance to our understanding of the inner structure of compact stars. In this letter, we report the first experimental results of correlation functions between deuterons (d) and {\Lambda} hyperons in Au+Au collisions at \sqrt{s_{NN} = 3.0 GeV measured by the STAR experiment at RHIC. A clear enhancement at small relative momenta has been observed in the correlation function. Through a Bayesian inference analysis, the source size parameters as a function of collision centrality and the spin- dependent strong interaction parameters (scattering length f0 and effective range d0) are extracted using the Lednick\'y-Lyuboshitz formalism. The derived doublet spin state parameters (f0, d0) lead to a novel method to precisely determine {\Lambda} separation energy for the weakly bounded hypertriton ^{3}_{{\Lambda}}H.

Study of Central Exclusive Production of $\pi^+\pi^-$, $K^+K^-$ and $p \bar{p}$ Pairs in Proton-Proton Collisions at $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV with the STAR Detector at RHIC

We report on the first measurement of the Central Exclusive Production process in proton-proton collisions: $pp \ \rightarrow \ p h^+ h^- p$ (where $h = \pi, K, p$) at the center-of-mass energy $\sqrt{s} = 510$ GeV with the STAR experiment at RHIC. At this energy, the process is dominated by a double Pomeron exchange mechanism. Hence, it provides a clean environment for investigating Pomeron interactions by measuring fully reconstructed final states involving only two hadrons and two forward scattered protons. The oppositely charged hadron pairs are measured within the central detector of STAR. The forward scattered protons are measured in the Roman Pot system allowing the verification of the event's exclusivity. Differential fiducial cross sections within the STAR acceptance are presented as a function of the difference in the azimuthal angle between the outgoing protons. The invariant masses of the charged hadron pairs are measured up to approximately 3 GeV and the square of the four-momentum transfer ($t_1$ and $t_2$) of the two forward-scattered protons in the range $0.3 \text{ GeV}^2 < -t_1 , -t_2 < 1.6 \text{ GeV}^2$. The differential fiducial cross sections of the forward protons as a function of the $|t_1 + t_2|$ are also presented. All results for the $\pi^+\pi^-$ pair are presented in three mass ranges. A comparison with GRANIITTI Monte Carlo predictions are also presented, where the spectra include continuum and resonant contributions. The observed spectra are consistent with double Pomeron exchange, including resonances seen in previous studies.

Engineering the shapes of quark-gluon plasma droplets by comparing anisotropic flow in small symmetric and asymmetric collision systems

The observation of collective flow phenomena in small collision systems challenges our understanding of quark-gluon plasma (QGP) formation and evolution. This complexity lies in the initial geometries, which are influenced by both nucleon configuration and subnucleonic fluctuations, introducing uncertainties in interpreting flow patterns. We disentangle these contributions through comparative measurements of elliptic ($v_2$) and triangular ($v_3$) flow in asymmetric $d$+Au and symmetric $^{16}$O+$^{16}$O collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}=200$ GeV, which produce medium of comparable sizes but with vastly different initial geometries. The larger $v_2$ in $d$+Au reflects its dominant elliptic geometry, while the similar $v_3$ in both systems is better explained by considering subnucleonic fluctuations. These contrasting flow patterns are quantitatively described by a state-of-the-art hydrodynamic model tuned to large-system Au+Au data, indicating efficient transformation of initial geometries to final-state anisotropies. These results provide evidence for droplet formation in small systems with transport properties that are similar to those observed in large collision systems, consistent with QGP-like behavior.

Measurement of transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ and $\bar{\Lambda}$ hyperons inside jets in $pp$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}=200$ GeV

A surprisingly large transverse polarization of $\Lambda$ hyperons in unpolarized hadron-nucleon/nucleus collisions has been observed for 50 years, and the origin of this polarization remains an important open question. Recently, theoretical frameworks have advanced in describing this puzzle with the polarizing fragmentation function (PFF). We report the first measurement of $\Lambda$ and $\overline{\Lambda}$ transverse polarization inside jets in unpolarized proton-proton collisions, which is directly attributed to the PFF. The polarization is measured as a function of the jet transverse momentum, the fraction of the jet momentum carried by $\Lambda$($\overline{\Lambda}$) hyperons, and the transverse momentum of $\Lambda(\overline{\Lambda})$ hyperons relative to the jet axis. Covering a wide jet-energy range, these data provide the first constraints on the gluon PFF and allow tests of TMD evolution and its universality.

Observation of charmonium sequential suppression in heavy-ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider

We report measurements of charmonium sequential suppression in Ru+Ru and Zr+Zr collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\mathrm {NN}}}$ = 200 GeV with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). The inclusive yield ratio of $\psi$(2S) to J/$\psi$ as a function of transverse momentum is reported, along with the centrality dependence of the double ratio, defined as the $\psi$(2S) to J/$\psi$ ratio in heavy-ion collisions relative to that in $p$+$p$ collisions. In the 0-80% centrality class, the double ratio is found to be 0.41 $\pm$ 0.10 (stat) $\pm$ 0.03 (syst) $\pm$ 0.02 (ref), lower than unity with a significance of 5.6 standard deviations. This provides experimental evidence that $\psi$(2S) is significantly more suppressed than J/$\psi$ in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC. This sequential suppression pattern seems to increase from peripheral to central collisions, but with no significant dependence on the transverse momentum.

Energy Independence of the Collins Asymmetry in $p^{\uparrow}p$ Collisions

The STAR experiment reports new, high-precision measurements of the transverse single-spin asymmetries for $\pi^{\pm}$ within jets, namely the Collins asymmetries, from transversely polarized ${p^{\uparrow}p}$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 510 GeV. The energy-scaled distribution of jet transverse momentum, $x_{\mathrm{T}} = 2p_{\mathrm{T,jet}}/\sqrt s$, shows a remarkable consistency for Collins asymmetries of $\pi^{\pm}$ in jets between $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV and 510 GeV. This indicates that the Collins asymmetries are nearly energy independent with, at most, a very weak scale dependence in $p^{\uparrow}p$ collisions. These results extend to high-momentum scales ($Q^2 \leq 3400$ GeV$^2$) and enable unique tests of evolution and universality in the transverse-momentum-dependent formalism, thus providing important constraints for the Collins fragmentation functions.

Imaging nuclear shape through anisotropic and radial flow in high-energy heavy-ion collisions

Most atomic nuclei exhibit ellipsoidal shapes characterized by quadrupole deformation $\beta_2$ and triaxiality $\gamma$, and sometimes even a pear-like octupole deformation $\beta_3$. The STAR experiment introduced a new "imaging-by-smashing" technique [arXiv:2401.06625, arXiv:2501.16071] to image the nuclear global shape by colliding nuclei at ultra-relativistic speeds and analyzing outgoing debris. Features of nuclear shape manifest in collective observables like anisotropic flow $v_n$ and radial flow via mean transverse momentum $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$. We present new measurements of the variances of $v_n$ ($n=2$, 3, and 4) and $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, and the covariance of $v_n^2$ with $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$, in collisions of highly deformed $^{238}$U and nearly spherical $^{197}$Au. Ratios of these observables between the two systems effectively suppress common final-state effects, isolating the strong impact of uranium's deformation. By comparing results with state-of-the-art hydrodynamic model calculations, we extract $\beta_{2\mathrm{U}}$ and $\gamma_{\mathrm{U}}$ values consistent with those deduced from low-energy nuclear structure measurements. Measurements of $v_3$ and its correlation with $[p_{\mathrm{T}}]$ also provide the first experimental suggestion of a possible octupole deformation for $^{238}$U. These findings provide significant support for using high-energy collisions to explore nuclear shapes on femtosecond timescales, with implications for both nuclear structure and quark-gluon plasma studies.

Measurement of the longitudinal flow-plane decorrelation using multi-plane cumulants in $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV Au+Au, Ru+Ru, and Zr+Zr collisions

Measurements of the variation of anisotropic flow-plane angles ($\Psi_n$) with rapidity, commonly known as the flow-plane decorrelation, provide important insights into the initial conditions of the matter produced in heavy-ion collisions. In this paper, using data collected by the STAR experiment, we report the first measurement of the four-plane correlator observable $T_{n}\{ba;dc\}=\langle\langle\sin [n(\Psi^{b}_{n}-\Psi^{a}_{n})]\sin[n(\Psi^{d}_{n}-\Psi^{c}_{n})]\rangle\rangle$, where superscripts $a$, $b$, $c$, and $d$ denote sequential pseudorapidity ($\eta$) regions with $a$ corresponding to the most backward region, $b$ and $c$ close to mid-rapidity with $\eta_b<0$ and $\eta_c>0$, and $d$ being the most forward. The measurement is performed for the elliptic and triangular flow (i.e. $n=2$ and $3$) in Au+Au and isobar (Ru+Ru, Zr+Zr) collisions at $\sqrt{s_{_{\mathrm{NN}}}}$ = 200 GeV. The goal of calculating the correlation of the flow-plane angle variations from backward to mid-central, and from mid-central to forward regions, is to probe the systematic variation of flow angle over a wide $\eta$ range. In mid-central collisions ($10-30\%$ centrality), we find $T_{2}\{ba;dc\}= -0.004\pm 0.001 (\rm stat)\pm0.002(\rm syst)$ independent of the collision system. Such a small value of $T_{2}$ favors a ''random-walk'' variation of the flow-plane angles, where the rapidity correlation length is smaller than the entire region under study. These measurements provide new information on the decorrelation patterns in the system and offer a quantitative estimate of possible systematic variations in anisotropic flow angles such as ''twist'' between forward and backward regions. This opens new opportunities for understanding the three-dimensional structure and the time evolution of the quark-gluon plasma created in heavy-ion collisions.

Onset of Constituent Quark Number Scaling in Heavy-Ion Collisions at RHIC

Partonic collectivity is one of the necessary signatures for the formation of quark-gluon plasma in high-energy nuclear collisions. Number of constituent quarks (NCQ) scaling has been observed for hadron elliptic flow $v_2$ in top energy nuclear collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider and the LHC, and this has been theoretically suggested as strong evidence for partonic collectivity. In this Letter, a systematic analysis of $v_2$ of $\pi^{\pm}$, $K^{\pm}$, $K^{0}_{S}$, $p$, and $\Lambda$ in Au+Au collisions at ${\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}}$ = 3.2, 3.5, 3.9, and 4.5 GeV, with the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, is presented. NCQ scaling is markedly violated at 3.2 GeV, consistent with a hadronic-interaction dominated equation of state. However, as the collision energy increases, a gradual evolution to NCQ scaling is observed. This beam-energy dependence of $v_2$ for all hadrons studied provides evidence for the onset of dominant partonic interactions by ${\sqrt{s_{_{\rm{NN}}}}}$ = 4.5 GeV.
