A note on the central-upwind scheme for nonlocal conservation laws

The central-upwind flux is a widely used numerical flux function for local conservation laws. It has been investigated by Kurganov and Polizzi (2009) for a specific nonlocal conservation law and can be derived from a fully-discrete second-order scheme. Here, we derive this fully-discrete scheme in detail with a particular focus on the occurring nonlocal terms. In addition, we derive the central-upwind flux for a class of nonlocal conservation laws and use an estimate on the nonlocal speed which fixes the nonlocality at the cell interfaces. We prove that the resulting first-order numerical scheme converges to the correct solution. Under additional assumptions on the analytical flux we present a similar result for a second-order central-upwind scheme. Numerical examples compare the central-upwind schemes to Godunov-type schemes and the fully-discrete scheme.

Explicit Runge-Kutta Methods with Multiquadric and Inverse Multiquadric Radial Basis Functions

In this article, a family of two- and three-stage explicit multiquadric (MQ) and inverse multiquadric (IMQ) radial basis functions (RBFs) Runge-Kutta methods are introduced for solving ordinary differential equations. These methods are developed by utilizing MQ- and IMQ-RBF Euler methods. The main advantage of these RBF-based methods lies in their ability to achieve a one-order higher accuracy than their classical Runge-Kutta counterparts without increasing the number of stages. This improvement is made possible by incorporating RBF corrections, where the optimal shape parameter is determined through the local truncation error analysis of the proposed schemes. Convergence and stability analyses, including the study of stability regions, are presented to illustrate how these methods compare with standard Runge-Kutta schemes. Numerical experiments on five benchmark problems further confirm predicted accuracy and stability, demonstrating that MQ- and IMQ-based RBF Runge-Kutta methods provide an alternative to conventional low-stage explicit RungeKutta schemes.

Convergence of the non-staggered Nessyahu-Tadmor scheme for coupled systems of one-dimensional nonlocal balance laws

We derive a second-order accurate, non-staggered central scheme based on the well-known Nessyahu-Tadmor scheme to approximate solutions of coupled systems of nonlocal balance laws. We show that the approximate solutions stay bounded by an exponential $L^\infty$ bound in time. Under linearity assumptions on the flux and source terms the approximate solutions converge weakly-$*$ to weak solutions of the nonlocal balance laws. Assuming stronger regularity, in particular on the convolution kernel, we show strong convergence towards entropy weak solutions in the nonlinear case. Numerical examples validate our results and demonstrate its applicability to various systems of nonlocal problems.

A general correction for numerical integration rules over piece-wise continuous functions

This article presents a novel approach to enhance the accuracy of classical quadrature rules by incorporating correction terms. The proposed method is particularly effective when the position of an isolated discontinuity in the function and the jump in the function and its derivatives at that position are known. Traditional numerical integration rules are exact for polynomials of certain degree. However, they may not provide accurate results for piece-wise polynomials or functions with discontinuities without modifying the location and number of data points in the formula. Our proposed correction terms address this limitation, enabling the integration rule to conserve its accuracy even in the presence of a jump discontinuity. The numerical experiments that we present support the theoretical results obtained.

Compact finite-difference scheme for some Sobolev type equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions

This study aims to construct a stable, high-order compact finite difference method for solving Sobolev-type equations with Dirichlet boundary conditions in one-space dimension. Approximation of higher-order mixed derivatives in some specific Sobolev-type equations requires a bigger stencil information. One can approximate such derivatives on compact stencils, which are higher-order accurate and take less stencil information but are implicit and sparse. Spatial derivatives in this work are approximated using the sixth-order compact finite difference method (Compact6), while temporal derivatives are handled with the explicit forward Euler difference scheme. We examine the accuracy and convergence behavior of the proposed scheme. Using the von Neumann stability analysis, we establish $L_2-$stability theory for the linear case. We derive conditions under which fully discrete schemes are stable. Also, the amplification factor $\mathcal{C}(\theta)$ is analyzed to ensure the decay property over time. Real parts of $\mathcal{C}(\theta)$ lying on the negative real axis confirm the exponential decay of the solution. A series of numerical experiments were performed to verify the effectiveness of the proposed scheme. These tests include both one dimensional and two-dimensional cases of cases of advection-free and advection-diffusion flows. They also cover applications to the equal width equation, such as the propagation of a single solitary wave, interactions between two and three solitary waves, undular bore formation, and the Benjamin-Bona-Mahony-Burgers equation.

A novel central compact finite-difference scheme for third derivatives with high spectral resolution

In this paper, we introduce a novel category of central compact schemes inspired by existing cell-node and cell-centered compact finite difference schemes, that offer a superior spectral resolution for solving the dispersive wave equation. In our approach, we leverage both the function values at the cell nodes and cell centers to calculate third-order spatial derivatives at the cell nodes. To compute spatial derivatives at the cell centers, we employ a technique that involves half-shifting the indices within the formula initially designed for the cell-nodes. In contrast to the conventional compact interpolation scheme, our proposed method effectively sidesteps the introduction of transfer errors. We employ the Taylor-series expansion-based method to calculate the finite difference coefficients. By conducting systematic Fourier analysis and numerical tests, we note that the methods exhibit exceptional characteristics such as high order, superior resolution, and low dissipation. Computational findings further illustrate the effectiveness of high-order compact schemes, particularly in addressing problems with a third derivative term.

Exponential approximation space reconstruction WENO scheme for dispersive PDEs

In this work, we construct a fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme with exponential approximation space for solving dispersive equations. A conservative third-order derivative formulation is developed directly using WENO spatial reconstruction procedure and third-order TVD Runge- Kutta scheme is used for the evaluation of time derivative. This exponential approximation space consists a tension parameter that may be optimized to fit the specific feature of the charecteristic data, yielding better results without spurious oscillations compared to the polynomial approximation space. A detailed formulation is presented for the the construction of conservative flux approximation, smoothness indicators, nonlinear weights and verified that the proposed scheme provides the required fifth convergence order. One and two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to support the theoretical claims.

Numerical schemes for a class of nonlocal conservation laws: a general approach

In this work we present a rather general approach to approximate the solutions of nonlocal conservation laws. In a first step, we approximate the nonlocal term with an appropriate quadrature rule applied to the spatial discretization. Then, we apply a numerical flux function on the reduced problem. We present explicit conditions which such a numerical flux function needs to fulfill. These conditions guarantee the convergence to the weak entropy solution of the considered model class. Numerical examples validate our theoretical results and demonstrate that the approach can be applied to other nonlocal problems.

Adaptive IQ and IMQ-RBFs for solving Initial Value Problems: Adam-Bashforth and Adam-Moulton methods

In this paper, our objective is primarily to use adaptive inverse-quadratic (IQ) and inverse-multi-quadratic (IMQ) radial basis function (RBF) interpolation techniques to develop an enhanced Adam-Bashforth and Adam-Moulton methods. By utilizing a free parameter involved in the radial basis function, the local convergence of the numerical solution is enhanced by making the local truncation error vanish. Consistency and stability analysis is presented along with some numerical results to back up our assertions. The accuracy and rate of convergence of each proposed technique are equal to or better than the original Adam-Bashforth and Adam-Moulton methods by eliminating the local truncation error thus, the proposed adaptive methods are optimal. We conclude that both IQ and IMQ-RBF methods yield an improved order of convergence than classical methods, while the superiority of one method depends on the method and the problem considered.

A sixth-order central WENO scheme for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations

In this paper we develop a new sixth-order finite difference central weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme with Z-type nonlinear weights for nonlinear degenerate parabolic equations. The centered polynomial is introduced for the WENO reconstruction in order to avoid the negative linear weights. We choose the Z-type nonlinear weights based on the $L^2$-norm smoothness indicators, yielding the new WENO scheme with more accurate resolution. It is also confirmed that the proposed central WENO scheme with the devised nonlinear weights achieves sixth order accuracy in smooth regions. One- and two-dimensional numerical examples are presented to demonstrate the improved performance of the proposed central WENO scheme.

Construction and comparative study of Euler method with adaptive IQ and IMQ-RBFs

The fundamental purpose of the present work is to constitute an enhanced Euler method with adaptive inverse-quadratic and inverse-multi-quadratic radial basis function (RBF) interpolation technique to solve initial value problems. These enhanced methods improve the local convergence of numerical solutions by utilizing a free parameter of radial basis functions. Consistency, convergence, and stability analysis are provided to support our claims for each method. Numerical results show that the accuracy and rate of convergence of each proposed method are the same as the original Euler method or improved by making the local truncation error vanish; thus, the adaptive methods are optimal.

Arc length based WENO scheme for Hamilton-Jacobi Equations

In this article, novel smoothness indicators are presented for calculating the nonlinear weights of weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme to approximate the viscosity numerical solutions of Hamilton-Jacobi equations. These novel smoothness indicators are constructed from the derivatives of reconstructed polynomials over each sub-stencil. The constructed smoothness indicators measure the arc-length of the reconstructed polynomials so that the new nonlinear weights could get less absolute truncation error and gives a high-resolution numerical solution. Extensive numerical tests are conducted and presented to show the performance capability and the numerical accuracy of the proposed scheme with the comparison to the classical WENO scheme.

Simple smoothness indicator WENO-Z scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws

The advantage of WENO-JS5 scheme [ J. Comput. Phys. 1996] over the WENO-LOC scheme [J. Comput. Phys.1994] is that the WENO-LOC nonlinear weights do not achieve the desired order of convergence in smooth monotone regions and at critical points. In this article, this drawback is achieved with the WENO-LOC smoothness indicators by constructing a WENO-Z type nonlinear weights which contains a novel global smoothness indicator. This novel smoothness indicator measures the derivatives of the reconstructed flux in a global stencil, as a result, the proposed numerical scheme could decrease the dissipation near the discontinuous regions. The theoretical and numerical experiments to achieve the required order of convergence in smooth monotone regions, at critical points, the essentially non-oscillatory (ENO), the analysis of parameters involved in the nonlinear weights like $\epsilon$ and $p$ are studied. From this study, we conclude that the imposition of certain conditions on $\epsilon$ and $p$, the proposed scheme achieves the global order of accuracy in the presence of an arbitrary number of critical points. Numerical tests for scalar, one and two-dimensional system of Euler equations are presented to show the effective performance of the proposed numerical scheme.

An Improved Non-linear Weights for Seventh-Order WENO Scheme

In this article, the construction and implementation of a seventh order weighted essentially non-oscillatory scheme is reported for hyperbolic conservation laws. Local smoothness indicators are constructed based on $L_{1}$-norm, where a higher order interpolation polynomial is used with each derivative being approximated to the fourth order of accuracy with respect to the evaluation point. The global smoothness indicator so constructed ensures the scheme achieves the desired order of accuracy. The scheme is reviewed in the presence of critical points and verified the numerical accuracy, convergence with the help of linear scalar test cases. Further, the scheme is implemented to non-linear scalar and system of equations in one and two dimensions. As the formulation is based on method of lines, to move forward in time linear strong-stability-preserving Runge-Kutta scheme (lSSPRK) for the linear problems and the fourth order nonlinear version of five stage strong stability preserving Runge-Kutta scheme (SSPRK(5,4)) for nonlinear problems is used.

A modified fifth-order WENO scheme for hyperbolic conservation laws

This paper deals with a new fifth-order weighted essentially non-oscillatory (WENO) scheme improving the WENO-NS and WENO-P methods which are introduced in Ha et al. J. Comput. Phys. (2013) and Kim et al., J. Sci. Comput. (2016) respectively. These two schemes provide the fifth-order accuracy at the critical points where the first derivatives vanish but the second derivatives are non-zero. In this paper, we have presented a scheme by defining a new global-smoothness indicator which shows an improved behavior over the solution to the WENO-NS and WENO-P schemes and the proposed scheme attains optimal approximation order, even at the critical points where the first and second derivatives vanish but the third derivatives are non-zero.
