Assessing Engineering Student Perceptions of Introductory CS Courses in an Indian Context

Understanding student perceptions of assessment is vital for designing inclusive and effective learning environments, especially in technical education. This study explores engineering students' perceptions of assessment practices in an introductory computer science/ programming course, and its associated laboratory within an Indian engineering institute context. A total of 318 first-year Bachelor of Technology students participated in a weekly 25-statement Likert-scale survey conducted over nine weeks. Using descriptive statistics and non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal-Wallis), the analysis reveals that students largely perceive lab assignments as effective learning activities and view exams and projects as authentic and skill-enhancing. Students appreciated the role of instructors in shaping course content and found teaching assistants to be approachable and helpful, despite some inconsistencies. The study also finds significant variations in students' academic performance and assessment perceptions based on prior programming experience, technology familiarity, gender, and academic branch. Notably, the performance data did not follow a Gaussian distribution, challenging common assumptions in grade modeling. A comparative analysis with European cohorts highlights both universal patterns and contextual differences, offering valuable insights for designing inclusive and equitable assessment strategies in programming education.

Exploring dark $Z_d$-boson in future Large Hadron-electron collider

The interaction between the dark $U(1)_d$ sector with the visible Standard Model (SM) sector takes place through the kinetic mixing between the dark photon $U(1)_d$ field $Z_d^\mu$ and the SM $U(1)_Y$ gauge field $B_\mu$. After the electroweak and $U(1)_d$ symmetry breaking, the dark photon $Z_d^\mu$ acquires a mass and mixes with the SM neutral vector boson $Z_\mu$. This mixing leads to parity-violating coupling between the $Z_d^\mu$ and SM. The coupling between the dark photon and SM can be explored in low energy phenomenology as well as in collider experiments. The Lorentz structure of dark photon interaction with SM fermions is explored in the proposed high energy future Large Hadron-electron collider, which would provide efficient energy and a clean environment using cross-section and asymmetries associated with polarisation observable of the dark photon in leptons decay. A $\chi^2$-analysis is performed to compare the strength of various variables for both the charge- and neutral-current processes. Based on this analysis, $90\%$ confidence level (C.L.) contours in the $\epsilon$-$m_{Z_d}$ and $\epsilon$-$g_V$ plane are obtained to put limits on the $Z_d^\mu$ mass up to $100$ GeV, coupling strength $\epsilon$ and on the Lorentz structure of dark photon coupling with the SM fermions ($g_V$) at $\sqrt{s} \approx 1.3$ TeV.

Multi-Domain Adaptation in Neural Machine Translation Through Multidimensional Tagging

While NMT has achieved remarkable results in the last 5 years, production systems come with strict quality requirements in arbitrarily niche domains that are not always adequately covered by readily available parallel corpora. This is typically addressed by training domain specific models, using fine-tuning methods and some variation of back-translation on top of in-domain monolingual corpora. However, industrial practitioners can rarely afford to focus on a single domain. A far more typical scenario includes a set of closely related, yet succinctly different sub-domains. At Booking.com, we need to translate property descriptions, user reviews, as well as messages, (for example those sent between a customer and an agent or property manager). An editor might need to translate articles across a set of different topics. An e-commerce platform would typically need to translate both the description of each item and the user generated content related to them. To this end, we propose MDT: a novel method to simultaneously fine-tune on several sub-domains by passing multidimensional sentence-level information to the model during training and inference. We show that MDT achieves results competitive to N specialist models each fine-tuned on a single constituent domain, while effectively serving all N sub-domains, therefore cutting development and maintenance costs by the same factor. Besides BLEU (industry standard automatic evaluation metric known to only weakly correlate with human judgement) we also report rigorous human evaluation results for all models and sub-domains as well as specific examples that better contextualise the performance of each model in terms of adequacy and fluency. To facilitate further research, we plan to make the code available upon acceptance.

Measuring Higgs self couplings in the presence of VVH and VVHH at the ILC

The recent discovery of a Higgs boson at the LHC, while establishing the Higgs mechanism as the way of electroweak symmetry breaking, started an era of precision measurements involving the Higgs boson. In an effective Lagrangian framework, we consider the $e^+e^-\rightarrow ZHH$ process at the ILC running at a centre of mass energy of 500 GeV to investigate the effect of the $ZZH$ and $ZZHH$ couplings on the sensitivity of $HHH$ coupling in this process. Our results show that the sensitivity of the trilinear Higgs self couplings on this process has somewhat strong dependence on the Higgs-gauge boson couplings. Single and two parameter reach of the ILC with an integrated luminosity of 1000 fb$^{-1}$ are obtained on all the effective couplings indicating how these limits are affected by the presence of anomalous $ZZH$ and $ZZHH$ couplings. The kinematic distributions studied to understand the effect of the anomalous couplings, again, show a strong influence of $Z$-$H$ couplings on the dependence of these distributions on $HHH$ coupling. Similar results are indicated in the case of the process, $e^+e^-\rightarrow \nu\bar \nu HH$, considered at a centre of mass energy of 2 TeV, where the cross section is large enough. The effect of $WWH$ and $WWHH$ couplings on the sensitivity of $HHH$ coupling is clearly established through our analyses in this process.

Fermiophobic gauge boson phenomenology in 221 Models

Models with extra gauge symmetry are well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. In this paper, we study an extended gauge model with a heavy neutral gauge boson $Z'$ which is fermiophobic. Thus, the production of such particles can occur via vector boson fusion, with subsequent decays into $WW$ or $Zh$. We investigate the collider phenomenology of such $Z'$s in the context of both the 14 TeV LHC and the future CLIC. We find that looking at $\ell\ell b b$ final states provides a rich opportunity to discover such new vector bosons where conventional search strategies in the dilepton channel would fail. In particular, we optimize our analysis by putting in kinematic cuts deriving model-independent values of $\sigma\times$BR needed for a 5$\sigma$ discovery at the LHC. We then translate this into the parameter space of a specific model for illustration purpose -- our results show that fermiophobic $Z'$s are discoverable in the $\ell\ell b b$ channel for wide range of parameter values.

Measuring CP nature of top-Higgs couplings at the future Large Hadron electron collider

We investigate the sensitivity of top-Higgs coupling by considering the associated vertex as CP phase ($\zeta_t$) dependent through the process $p\, e^- \to \bar t \,h \,\nu_e$ in the future Large Hadron electron collider. In particular the decay modes are taken to be $h \to b\bar b$ and $\bar t \to$ leptonic mode. Several distinct $\zeta_t$ dependent features are demonstrated by considering observables like cross sections, top-quark polarisation, rapidity difference between $h$ and $\bar t$ and different angular asymmetries. Luminosity ($L$) dependent exclusion limits are obtained for $\zeta_t$ by considering significance based on fiducial cross sections at different $\sigma$-levels. For electron and proton beam-energies of 60 GeV and 7 TeV respectively, at $L = 100$~fb$^{-1}$, the regions above $\pi/5 < \zeta_t \leq \pi$ are excluded at 2$\sigma$ confidence level, which reflects better sensitivity expected at the Large Hadron Collider. With appropriate error fitting methodology we find that the accuracy of SM top-Higgs coupling could be measured to be $\kappa = 1.00 \pm 0.17 (0.08)$ at $\sqrt{s} = 1.3 (1.8)$ TeV for an ultimate $L = 1 \,\rm{ab}^{-1}$.

Constraining capability of $Z \gamma h$ production at the ILC

Higgs boson couplings with gauge bosons are probed through $e^-e^+ \rightarrow Z \gamma h$ in an effective Lagrangian framework. For this study the beam polarization facility at the ILC along with the typical center-of-mass energy of 500 GeV is considered. The reach of the ILC with an integrated luminosity of 300 fb$^{-1}$ in the determination of $CP$-conserving parameters is obtained. Sensitivity of the probe of each of these couplings in the presence of other couplings is investigated. The most influential coupling parameters are $\bar c_W=-\bar c_B$. Other parameters of significant effect are $\bar c_{HW}$ and $\bar c_{HB}$. A detailed study of the various kinematic distributions represents possibilities to disentangle the effect of some of these couplings.

Study of Higgs-gauge boson anomalous couplings through $e^-e^+ \rightarrow W^-W^+H$ at ILC

In this work, Higgs couplings with gauge bosons is probed through $e^-e^+ \rightarrow W^-W^+H$ in an effective Lagrangian framework. An ILC of 500 $GeV$ center of mass energy with possible beam polarization is considered for this purpose. The reach of ILC with integrated luminosity of 300 $fb^{-1}$ in the determination of both the CP-conserving and CP-violating parameters are obtained. Sensitivity of the probe of each of these couplings on the presence of other couplings is investigated. The most influential couplings parameters are $\bar c_W=-\bar c_B$. Other parameters of significant effect are $\bar c_{HW}$ and $\bar c_{HB}$ among the CP-conserving ones, and $\tilde c_{HW}$ and $\tilde c_{HB}$ among the CP-violating ones. CP-violating parameter, $\tilde c_\gamma$ seems to have very little influence on the process considered. Detailed study of the angular distributions have presented a way to disentangle the effect of some of these couplings.

Probing $WW\gamma$ coupling through $e^- \gamma \rightarrow \nu_e W^-$ at ILC

The anomalous $WW\gamma$ coupling is probed through $e\gamma\rightarrow \nu W$ at the ILC. With a spectacular single lepton final state, this process is well suited to study the above coupling. Cross section measurements can probe $\delta \kappa_\gamma$ to about $\pm 0.004$ for a luminosity of 100 fb$^{-1}$ at $500$ GeV center-of-mass energy with unpolarized electron beam. The limits derivable on $\lambda_\gamma$ from the total cross section are comparatively more relaxed. Exploiting the energy-angle double distribution of the secondary muons, kinematic regions sensitive to these couplings are identified. The derivable limit on $\lambda_\gamma < 0$ could be improved to a few per-mil, focusing on such regions. More importantly, the angular distributions at fixed energy values, and energy distribution at fixed angles present very interesting possibility of distinguishing the case of $\lambda_\gamma <0$ and $\lambda_\gamma \ge 0$.

Influence of anomalous VVH and VVHH on determination of Higgs self couplings at ILC

The recent discovery of a Higgs boson at LHC, while establishing the Higgs mechanism as the way of electroweak symmetry breaking, started an era of precision measurements involving the Higgs boson. In an effective Lagrangian framework, we consider the e+e- --> ZHH process, at an ILC running at a centre of mass energy of 800 GeV to investigate the effect of the ZZH and ZZHH couplings on the sensitivity of HHH coupling on this process. Our results show that the sensitivity of the trilinear Higgs self couplings on this process has somewhat strong dependence on the Higgs-gauge boson couplings. Single and two parameter reach of ILC with integrated luminosity of 1000 /fb are obtained on the effective couplings, c6 and cH, which are related to the HHH couplings, indicating how these limits are affected by the presence of anomalous ZZH and ZZHH couplings. The kinematic distributions studied to understand the effect of the anomalous couplings, again, show strong influence of Z-H couplings on the dependence of these distributions on HHH coupling. Similar results are indicated in the case of the process, e+e- --> nu nu HH, considered at a centre of mass energy of 2 TeV, where the cross section is large enough. The effect of WWH and WWHH couplings on the sensitivity of HHH coupling is clearely established through our analyses of this process.

Study of Single W production in e-gamma collisions through the decay lepton spectrum to probe gamma-WW couplings

We investigate the effect of anomalous gamma-W-W couplings in e-gamma --> nu W through the angular and energy spectrum of the secondary leptons. Within the narrow-width approximation, a semi-analytical study of the secondary lepton energy-angle double distribution is considered. Utility of observables derived from this is demonstrated by considering the anomalous coupling, delta-kappa-gamma. Results of our investigation for typical ILC machine considered at Ecm = 300-1000 GeV re-affirms potential of this collider as a precision machine.
