Low temperature thermodynamics of $S_{\mathrm{eff}}=1/2$ triangular lattice quantum spin liquid candidate TlYbS$_2$

Geometrically frustrated triangular-lattice antiferromagnets exhibit a delicate competition between magnetic order and quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior, with the Yb-based delafossite family $A$Yb$X_2$ providing a structurally clean platform for exploring this physics. Here, we report a comprehensive study of single-crystal TlYbS$_2$ using DC magnetization, AC susceptibility, electron spin resonance (ESR), and specific heat measurements extending from room temperature to the millikelvin regime. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction confirms a trigonal $R\bar{3}m$ structure comprising well-separated triangular layers of Yb$^{3+}$ ions with no detectable site disorder. At zero field, a weak thermodynamic anomaly is observed near $530$ mK, which may indicate the onset of a weakly ordered state similar to that reported in KYbSe$_2$. Below $300$ mK, the zero-field magnetic specific heat follows $C_{\rm m}\propto T^{1.8}$, close to a quadratic temperature dependence, in contrast to the linear temperature dependence reported for the sister compound TlYbSe$_2$, which has been described in terms of the interplay between spinons and thermally excited gauge-flux excitations. Magnetization and ESR measurements establish pronounced easy-plane magnetic anisotropy, with $g_\perp/g_\parallel \approx 6.9$. The anomaly near $530$ mK exhibits a strongly anisotropic response to magnetic field. For $H\perp c$, it remains visible up to approximately $2$ T and continuously evolves toward a field-induced ordered phase above approximately $2.5$ T, followed by a sequence of field-induced phases that includes a $1/3$ magnetization plateau between approximately $5$ and $8$ T and full polarization near $17$ T. In contrast, for $H\parallel c$, the anomaly weakens and is suppressed near $3$ T, consistent with the recently reported confinement--deconfinement transition from an ordered state to a field-induced QSL.

Thermodynamic signatures of a field-induced ordered intermediate phase in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$

The honeycomb cobaltate Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$ has recently been proposed as a candidate material for hosting field-induced quantum spin liquid (QSL) behavior. Here, we present a comprehensive thermodynamic study of its low-temperature, high-field phase diagram using magnetization, specific heat, and magnetocaloric-effect measurements down to 1 K. In zero field, we observe a weak residual moment that provides further insight into the nature of the magnetic ground state. For in-plane magnetic fields ($B \parallel a^*$), we identify three field-induced transitions at $B_{c1} \simeq 6$ T, $B_{c2} \simeq 7.8$ T, and $B_{c3} \simeq 10.4$ T. The magnetic Gr\"uneisen parameter and specific heat reveal clear thermodynamic signatures of these successive phase transitions enclosing two intermediate phases. Contrary to expectations for a field-induced QSL, the phase between $B_{c2}$ and $B_{c3}$ lacks enhanced magnetic entropy but instead shows behavior consistent with a distinct ordered state. Above $B_{c3}$, the absence of additional anomalies indicates a crossover to a conventional spin-polarized regime. Our results place stringent thermodynamic constraints on the proposed QSL scenario in Na$_2$Co$_2$TeO$_6$, calling for further microscopic investigations to establish the precise nature of the field-induced phases.

Anisotropic magnetoelastic coupling in the honeycomb magnet Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$

We present magnetization and dilatometry measurements on the honeycomb cobaltate Na$_3$Co$_2$SbO$_6$ and map out its detailed field-temperature phase diagram down to sub-Kelvin temperatures. Our data for in-plane magnetic fields show a strongly anisotropic $c^{*}$-axis lattice response, which is dominated by the variation of Co--O--Co bond angles according to \textit{ab initio} calculations. At $T = 0.4$~K, the magnetization $M(B)$ exhibits step-like features that are also highly anisotropic. In the case of $B \parallel b$, a small hysteresis observed around the second field-induced magnetic transition ($B_{c2}$) indicates its first-order character, whereas divergence of the magnetic Gr\"uneisen parameter at $B_{c2}$ is suppressed upon cooling and signals the absence of quantum critical behavior upon entering the field-polarized state. None of our thermodynamic measurements provide evidence for a field-induced quantum spin liquid state near or above $B_{c2}$.

Intermediate field-induced phase of the honeycomb magnet BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4$)$_2$

We use magnetometry, calorimetry, and high-resolution capacitive dilatometry, as well as single-crystal neutron diffraction to explore temperature-field phase diagram of the anisotropic honeycomb magnet BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4)_2$. Our data reveal four distinct ordered states observed for in-plane magnetic fields. Of particular interest is the narrow region between 0.51 and 0.55 T that separates the up-up-down order from the fully polarized state and coincides with the field range where signatures of the spin-liquid behavior have been reported. We show that magnetic Bragg peaks persist in this intermediate phase, thus ruling out its spin-liquid nature. However, the simultaneous nonmonotonic evolution of nuclear Bragg peaks suggests the involvement of the lattice, witnessed also in other regions of the phase diagram where large changes in the sample length are observed upon entering the magnetically ordered states. Our data highlight the importance of lattice effects in BaCo$_2$(AsO$_4)_2$.
