On Analyticity of Solitons for the Periodic Dispersion-Managed Nonlinear Schr\"odinger Equation

We explore the regularity of energy maximizers for the Lagrangian of a periodic dispersion managed fiber optic at fixed intensity, on a torus of length $L$ and with vanishing average dispersion. We show that the Fourier coefficients decay at a polynomial rate, and then upgrade this to exponential decay, so that the maximizers are analytic in space for large enough $L$. In addition, by an asymptotic comparison to the optimizers on the real line, we prove that the solutions are non-trivial. We also consider a conjecture that the maximizer necessarily has an underlying symmetry inherent to both the energy functional and the resulting Euler-Lagrange equation. All of our results are supported with illustrative numerical experiments.

Decay of solutions of nonlinear Dirac equations: the 2D case

We study the long-time behavior of small solutions for a broad class of 2D Dirac-type equations with suitable nonlinearities. First, we prove that for nonlinearities with power $p\geq 5$ (massless case) and $p\geq7$ (massive case), any small globally bounded radial solution with vorticity $S\ne -1,0$ decays to zero locally in $L^2_{loc}$, as time tends to infinity. For solutions uniformly bounded in time in a weighted $H^1$ space, this decay result extends to lower powers $p\geq 3$ (massless) and $p\geq5$ (massive). Our main results apply to several physical models of current interest, such as the 2D Dirac equation with a honeycomb potential described by Fefferman and Weinstein. Finally, we rule out the existence of small, localized structures such as standing breathers or solitary waves in the 2D regimes considered. To prove these results, we introduce new virial identities with a particular algebra that are applied directly to the Dirac model, and without resorting to the nonlinear Klein-Gordon equation.

Global results for weakly dispersive KP-II equations on the cylinder

We consider the dispersion-generalized KP-II equation on a partially periodic domain in the weakly dispersive regime. We use Fourier decoupling techniques to derive essentially sharp Strichartz estimates. With these at hand, we show global well-posedness of the quasilinear Cauchy problem in $L^2(\mathbb{R} \times \mathbb{T})$. Finally, we prove a long-time decay property of solutions with small mass by using the Kato smoothing effect in the fractional case.

Existence of martingale solutions to a stochastic kinetic model of chemotaxis

We show the existence of local and global in time weak martingale solutions for a stochastic version of the Othmer-Dunbar-Alt kinetic model of chemotaxis under suitable assumptions on the turning kernel and stochastic drift coefficients, using dispersion and stochastic Strichartz estimates. The analysis is based on new Strichartz estimates for stochastic kinetic transport. The derivation of these estimates involves a local in time dispersion analysis using properties of stochastic flows, and a time-splitting argument to extend the local in time results to arbitrary time intervals.

Decay of solutions of nonlinear Dirac equations

We study the long-time behavior of small and large solutions to a broad class of nonlinear Dirac-type equations. Our results are classified in 1D massless and massive cases, 3D general and $n$ dimensional in generality. In the 1D massless case we prove that any globally defined solution converges to zero as time tends to infinity, within a spatial region expanding at a rate proportional to $ t \log^{-2} t$. This result holds without assumptions on the smallness of initial data or specific power of nonlinearity, ruling out the existence of standing breather-like or solitary wave structures in this regime. In the 1D massive case, solitary waves are known to exist. Introducing new virial identities adapted to the Dirac's distinctive algebra, we prove that there are ``holomorphic'' odd nonlinearities under which globally defined small odd solutions decay to zero on spatial compact sets as time tends to infinity. This result is extended to the 3D case under boundedness of the $H^1$ norm but without requiring the parity condition on the data, giving decay proofs for an important class of nonlinear Dirac models, and opening the door to the future use of virial identities to prove asymptotic stability of well-chosen Dirac solitary waves. Finally, in higher dimensions $ n \geq 1$, we prove the $L^2$ decay for global solutions of nonlinear Dirac equations in the ``exterior light-cone'' region. This confirms the non-existence of breathers and other solutions propagating faster than the speed of light. Our proofs rely on carefully constructed weighted virial identities.

Global well-posedness of the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$

We prove global well-posedness for the cubic nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation for periodic initial data in the mass-critical dimension $d=2$ for initial data of arbitrary size in the defocusing case and data below the ground state threshold in the focusing case. The result is based on a new inverse Strichartz inequality, which is proved by using incidence geometry and additive combinatorics, in particular, the inverse theorems for Gowers uniformity norms by Green-Tao-Ziegler. This allows to transfer the analogous results of Dodson for the non-periodic mass-critical NLS to the periodic setting. In addition, we construct an approximate periodic solution which implies sharpness of the results.

Strichartz estimates for the half Klein-Gordon equation on asymptotically flat backgrounds and applications to cubic Dirac equations

The aim of this paper is to establish the $L^2_t$-endpoint Strichartz estimate for (half) Klein-Gordon equations on a weakly asymptotically flat space-time. As an application we prove small data global well-posedness and scattering for massive cubic Dirac equations in the full subcritical range in this setting. Crucial ingredient is a parametrix contruction following the work of Metcalfe-Tataru and Xue and complements Strichartz estimates obtained by Zheng-Zhang. The proof of the global result for the cubic Dirac equation follows the strategy developed by Machihara-Nakanishi-Ozawa in the Euclidean setting.

The energy-critical stochastic Zakharov system

This work is devoted to the stochastic Zakharov system in dimension four, which is the energy-critical dimension. First, we prove local well-posedness in the energy space $H^1\times L^2$ up to the maximal existence time and a blow-up alternative. Second, we prove that for large data solutions exist globally as long as energy and wave mass are below the ground state threshold. Third, we prove a regularization by noise phenomenon: the probability of global existence and scattering goes to one if the strength of the (non-conservative) noise goes to infinity. The proof is based on the refined rescaling approach and a new functional framework, where both Fourier restriction and local smoothing norms are used as well as a (uniform) double endpoint Strichartz and local smoothing inequality for the Schr\"odinger equation with certain rough and time dependent lower order perturbations.

Numerical approximation of bi-harmonic wave maps into spheres

We construct a structure preserving non-conforming finite element approximation scheme for the bi-harmonic wave maps into spheres equation. It satisfies a discrete energy law and preserves the non-convex sphere constraint of the continuous problem. The discrete sphere constraint is enforced at the mesh-points via a discrete Lagrange multiplier. This approach restricts the spatial approximation to the (non-conforming) linear finite elements. We show that the numerical approximation converges to the weak solution of the continuous problem in spatial dimension $d=1$. The convergence analysis in dimensions $d>1$ is complicated by the lack of a discrete product rule as well as the low regularity of the numerical approximation in the non-conforming setting. Hence, we show convergence of the numerical approximation in higher-dimensions by introducing additional stabilization terms in the numerical approximation. We present numerical experiments to demonstrate the performance of the proposed numerical approximation and to illustrate the regularizing effect of the bi-Laplacian which prevents the formation of singularities.

The Cauchy problem for the periodic Kadomtsev--Petviashvili--II equation below $L^2$

We extend Bourgain's $L^2$-wellposedness result for the KP-II equation on $\mathbb{T}^2$ to initial data with negative Sobolev regularity. The key ingredient is a new linear $L^4$-Strichartz estimate which is effective on frequency-dependent time scales. The $L^4$-Strichartz estimates follow from combining an $\ell^2$-decoupling inequality recently proved by Guth--Maldague--Oh with semiclassical Strichartz estimates. Moreover, we rely on a variant of Bourgain's bilinear Strichartz estimate on frequency-dependent times, which is proved via the C\'ordoba--Fefferman square function estimate.

Modified scattering for the three dimensional Maxwell-Dirac system

In this work we prove global well-posedness for the massive Maxwell-Dirac system in the Lorenz gauge in $\mathbb{R}^{1+3}$, for small, sufficiently smooth and decaying initial data, as well as modified scattering for the solutions. Heuristically we exploit the close connection between the massive Maxwell-Dirac and the wave-Klein-Gordon equations, while developing a novel approach which applies directly at the level of the Dirac equations. The modified scattering result follows from a precise description of the asymptotic behavior of the solutions inside the light cone, which we derive via the method of testing with wave packets of Ifrim-Tataru.

Strichartz estimates and global well-posedness of the cubic NLS on $\mathbb{T}^{2}$

The optimal $L^4$-Strichartz estimate for the Schr{\"o}dinger equation on the two-dimensional rational torus $\mathbb{T}^2$ is proved, which improves an estimate of Bourgain. A new method based on incidence geometry is used. The approach yields a stronger $L^4$ bound on a logarithmic time scale, which implies global existence of solutions to the cubic (mass-critical) nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation in $H^s(\mathbb{T}^2)$ for any $s>0$ and data which is small in the critical norm.

The massless and the non-relativistic limit for the cubic Dirac equation

Massive and massless Dirac equations with Lorentz-covariant cubic nonlinearities are considered in spatial dimension $d=2,3$. Global well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for small initial data in scale-invariant Sobolev spaces and scattering of solutions is proved by a new approach which uses bilinear Fourier restriction estimates and atomic function spaces. Furthermore, global uniform convergence results, both in the massless and in the non-relativistic limit, are proved at optimal regularity. In both regimes, these are the first results which imply convergence of scattering states and wave operators.

The three dimensional stochastic Zakharov system

We study the three dimensional stochastic Zakharov system in the energy space, where the Schr\"odinger equation is driven by linear multiplicative noise and the wave equation is driven by additive noise. We prove the well-posedness of the system up to the maximal existence time and provide a blow-up alternative. We further show that the solution exists at least as long as it remains below the ground state. Two main ingredients of our proof are refined rescaling transformations and the normal form method. Moreover, in contrast to the deterministic setting, our functional framework also incorporates the local smoothing estimate for the Schr\"odinger equation in order to control lower order perturbations arising from the noise. Finally, we prove a regularization by noise result which states that finite time blowup before any given time can be prevented with high probability by adding sufficiently large non-conservative noise. The key point of its proof is an estimate in Strichartz spaces for solutions of a Schr\"odinger type equation with a nonlocal potential involving the free wave.

Low regularity well-posedness of KP-I equations: the three-dimensional case

In this paper, low regularity local well-posedness results for the Kadomtsev--Petviashvili--I equation posed in spatial dimension $d =3$ are proved. Periodic, non-periodic and mixed settings as well as generalized dispersion relations are considered. In the weak dispersion regime, these initial value problems show a quasilinear behavior so that bilinear and energy estimates on frequency dependent time scales are used in the analysis.

Local well-posedness of a system describing laser-plasma interactions

A degenerate Zakharov system arises as a model for the description of laser-plasma interactions. It is a coupled system of a Schr\"odinger and a wave equation with a non-dispersive direction. In this paper, a new local well-posedness result for rough initial data is established. The proof is based on an efficient use of local smoothing and maximal function norms.

The Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in high dimensions: Small initial data of critical regularity

The Zakharov-Kuznetsov equation in spatial dimension $d\geq 5$ is considered. The Cauchy problem is shown to be globally well-posed for small initial data in critical spaces and it is proved that solutions scatter to free solutions as $t \to \pm \infty$. The proof is based on i) novel endpoint non-isotropic Strichartz estimates which are derived from the $(d-1)$-dimensional Schr\"odinger equation, ii) transversal bilinear restriction estimates, and iii) an interpolation argument in critical function spaces. Under an additional radiality assumption, a similar result is obtained in dimension $d=4$.

Global wellposedness for the energy-critical Zakharov system below the ground state

The Cauchy problem for the Zakharov system in the energy-critical dimension $d=4$ is considered. We prove that global well-posedness holds in the full (non-radial) energy space for any initial data with energy and wave mass below the ground state threshold. The result is based on a Strichartz estimate for the Schr\"odinger equation with a potential. More precisely, a Strichartz estimate is proved to hold uniformly for any potential solving the free wave equation with mass below the ground state constraint. The key new ingredient is a bilinear (adjoint) Fourier restriction estimate for solutions of the inhomogeneous Schr\"odinger equation with forcing in dual endpoint Strichartz spaces.
