Dual wavelength source of entanglement for space quantum communication

We report the demonstration of a bulk, intrinsically phase-stable source of polarization- and time-energy-entangled photon pairs at 810nm and 1550nm, directly coupled into single-mode optical fibers. This highly non-degenerate wavelength combination is well suited for hybrid quantum communication networks, enabling low-loss transmission in optical fibers at 1550nm while maintaining efficient free-space propagation and detection at 810nm. The source is based on spontaneous parametric down-conversion in a periodically poled lithium niobate crystal embedded in a polarization Sagnac interferometer, providing inherent stability and dual-degree-of-freedom entanglement. We measure a spectral brightness of B = 4800 pair/s/mW/GHz, with fiber coupling efficiencies exceeding 0.48 at both wavelengths. The entanglement quality is characterized by high-visibility two-photon interference, yielding net visibilities of 0.995 in the polarization basis and 0.991 in the energy-time basis. These performances demonstrate a compact and robust entanglement source compatible with hybrid fiber/free-space quantum key distribution architectures, and suitable for future ground-to-satellite quantum communication links.

Decoherence induced by dipole-dipole couplings between atomic species in rare-earth ion-doped Y$_2$SiO$_5$

Rare-earth ion doped crystals are state-of-the-art platforms for processing quantum information, particularly thanks to their excellent optical and spin coherence properties at cryogenic temperatures. Experimental observations have shown that the application of a static magnetic bias field significantly improves the coherence times in the rare-earth ions ensemble, but only a few studies have focused on its the dependency as a function of both magnetic field direction and amplitude. This is especially true for magnetic field amplitudes under the mT, and for low magnetic dipole moment ions. In this paper, we investigate the relationship between the magnetic field parameters and the decoherence caused by magnetic dipole-dipole coupling with the nearest neighbors nuclear spins in the crystal. The primary non-Kramers rare-earth ions investigated here are europium and praseodymium, but we also extend our study to the ytterbium Kramers ion due to its low magnetic dipole in the mT range. We perform theoretical investigations and simulations of the energy structure and coherence time evolution and identify good correspondences between experimental and simulated spin echo data. This work allows us to pinpoint the most relevant decoherence mechanisms in the considered magnetic field regime, and to predict favorable magnetic configurations.

Mid-Infrared Single Photon Counting

We report a procedure to detect mid-infrared single photons at 4.65 um via a two-stage scheme based on Sum Frequency Generation, using a Periodically Poled Lithium Niobate (PPLN) nonlinear crystal and a Silicon Avalanche Photodiode. An experimental investigation shows that, in addition to a high timing resolution, this technique yields a detection sensitivity of 1.24 pW with 63mW of net pump power.

A photonic quantum information interface

Quantum communication is the art of transferring quantum states, or quantum bits of information (qubits), from one place to another. On the fundamental side, this allows one to distribute entanglement and demonstrate quantum nonlocality over significant distances. On the more applied side, quantum cryptography offers, for the first time in human history, a provably secure way to establish a confidential key between distant partners. Photons represent the natural flying qubit carriers for quantum communication, and the presence of telecom optical fibres makes the wavelengths of 1310 and 1550 nm particulary suitable for distribution over long distances. However, to store and process quantum information, qubits could be encoded into alkaline atoms that absorb and emit at around 800 nm wavelength. Hence, future quantum information networks made of telecom channels and alkaline memories will demand interfaces able to achieve qubit transfers between these useful wavelengths while preserving quantum coherence and entanglement. Here we report on a qubit transfer between photons at 1310 and 710 nm via a nonlinear up-conversion process with a success probability greater than 5%. In the event of a successful qubit transfer, we observe strong two-photon interference between the 710 nm photon and a third photon at 1550 nm, initially entangled with the 1310 nm photon, although they never directly interacted. The corresponding fidelity is higher than 98%.

High quality asynchronous heralded single photon source at telecom wavelength

We report on the experimental realization and characterization of an asynchronous heralded single photon source based on spontaneous parametric down conversion. Photons at 1550nm are heralded as being inside a single-mode fiber with more than 60% probability, and the multi-photon emission probability is reduced by up to a factor 600 compared to poissonian light sources. These figures of merit, together with the choice of telecom wavelength for the heralded photons are compatible with practical applications needing very efficient and robust single photon sources.
