Macro to micro phase separation in a collection of chiral active swimmers

We studied a collection of chiral active particles (CAP) on a two dimensional substrate using extensive numerical study. Particles interact through soft repulsive interaction. The activity and chirality of particles is tuned by varying their self-propulsion speed and angular velocity respectively. Kinetics and steady state properties of particles are studied for different chirality and activity. The phase diagram of system on the plane of activity and chirality shows three distinct phases. For small chirality when activity is dominant, particles show enhanced dynamics and macroscopic phase separation of ordered clusters is observed. For moderate chirality, micro clustered phase is observed in which small clusters with moderate ordering are formed. For large chirality, when chirality dominates, no clustering is found because particle motion is mainly confined to its location. Our study gives a detail insight into the effect of chirality on the properties of collection of CAP, which can be useful to understand the dynamics and steady state of many natural micro swimmers.

Effective single component description of steady state structures of passive particles in an active bath

We model a binary mixture of passive and active Brownian particles in two dimensions using the effective interaction between passive particles in the active bath. The activity of active particles and the size ratio of two types of particles are two control parameters in the system. The effective interaction is calculated from the average force on two particles generated by the active particles. The effective interaction can be attractive or repulsive, depending on the system parameters. The passive particles form four distinct structural orders for different system parameters viz; disorder (D), disordered cluster (DC), ordered cluster (OC), and poly-crystalline order (P C). The change in structure is dictated by the change in nature of the effective interaction. We further confirm the four structures using full microscopic simulation of active and passive mixture. Our study is useful to understand the different collective behaviour in non-equilibrium systems.

Active polar flock with birth and death

We study a collection of self-propelled polar particles on a two-dimensional substrate with birth and death. We introduce a minimal lattice model for the system using active Ising spins, where each particle can have two possible orientations. The activity is modeled as a biased movement of the particle along its direction of orientation. The particles also align with their nearest neighbors using Metropolis Monte-Carlo algorithm. System shows a disorder-to-order transition by tuning the temperature of the system. Additionally, the birth and death of the particles is introduced through a birth and death rate $γ$. The system is studied near the disorder-to-order transition. The nature of disorder-to-order transition shows a crossover from first order, discontinuous to continuous type as we tune $γ$ from zero to finite values. We also write the effective free energy of the local order parameter using renormalised mean field theory and it confirms the dependence of the nature of phase transition on the birth and death rate parameter.

Dynamics of active run and tumble and passive particles in binary mixture

We study a binary mixture of disk-shaped {\it active run and tumble } particles (${ARNPs}$) and passive particles on a two-dimensional substrate. Both types of particles are athermal. The particles interact through the soft repulsive potential. The activity of $ARNPs$ is controlled by tuning their tumbling rate. The system is studied for various sizes of passive particles keeping size of $ARNPs$ fixed. Hence the variables are, size ratio (S) of passive particles and $ARNPs$, and activity of $ARNPs$ is $v$. The characterstics dynamics of both $ARNPs$ and passive particles show a crossover from early time ballistic to later time diffusive. Furthermore, we observed that passive particles dynamics changes from diffusive to subdiffusive with respect to their size. Moreover, late time effective diffusivity $D_{eff}$ of passive particles decreases with increasing their size as in the corresponding equilibrium Stokes systems. We calculated the effective temperatures, using $D_{eff}$, $T_{a,eff}(Δ)$ and also using speed distribution $T_{a,eff}(v)$ and compared them. The both $T_{a,eff}(Δ)$ and $T_{a,eff}(v)$ increases linearly with activity and are in agreement with each other. Hence we can say that an effective equilibrium can be establish in such binary mixture. Our study can be useful to study the various biological systems like; dynamics of passive organels in cytoplasm, colloids etc.

Bond disorder enhances the information transfer in polar flock

Collection of self-propelled particles (SPPs) exhibit coherent motion and show true long-range order in two-dimensions. Inhomogeneity, in general destroys the usual long-range order of the polar SPPs. We model a system of polar self-propelled particles with inhomogeneous interaction strength or bond disorder. The system is studied near the order-to-disorder transition for different strengths of the disorder. The nature of phase transition changes from discontinuous to continuous type by tuning the strength of the disorder. The bond disorder also enhances the ordering near the transition due to the formation of a homogeneous flock state for the large disorder. It leads to faster information transfer in the system and enhances the system information entropy. Our study gives a new understanding of the effect of intrinsic inhomogeneity in the self-propelled particle system.

Polar swimmers induce several phases in active nematics

Swimming bacteria in passive nematics in the form of lyotropic liquid crystals are defined as a new class of active matter known as living liquid crystals in recent studies. It has also been shown that liquid crystal solutions are promising candidates for trapping and detecting bacteria. We ask the question, can a similar class of matter be designed for background nematics which are also active? Hence, we developed a minimal model for the mixture of polar particles in active nematics. It is found that the active nematics in such a mixture are highly sensitive to the presence of polar particles, and show the formation of large scale higher order structures for a relatively low polar particle density. Upon increasing the density of polar particles, different phases of active nematics are found and it is observed that the system shows two phase transitions. The first phase transition is a first order transition from quasi-long ranged ordered active nematics to disordered active nematics with larger scale structures. On further increasing density of polar particles, the system transitions to a third phase, where polar particles form large, mutually aligned clusters. These clusters sweep the whole system and enforce local order in the nematics. The current study can be helpful for detecting the presence of very low densities of polar swimmers in active nematics and can be used to design and control different structures in active nematics.

Activity Driven Phase Separation and Ordering Kinetics of Passive Particles

The steady state and phase ordering kinetics in a pure active Borwnian particle system are studied in recent years. In binary mixture of active and passive Brownian particles passive particles are used as probe to understand the properties of active medium. In our present study we study the mixture of passive and active Brownian particles. Here we aim to understand the steady state and kinetics of small passive particles in the mixture. In our system, the passive particles are small in size and large in number, whereas ABPs are large in size and small in number. The system is studied on a two-dimensional substrate using overdamp Langevin dynamic simulation. The steady state and kinetics of passive particles are studied for various size and activity of active particles. Passive particles are purely athermal in nature and have dynamics only due to bigger ABPs. For small size ratio and activity the passive particles remain homogeneous in the system, whereas on increasing size ratio and activity they form periodic hexagonal close pack (HCP) spanning clusters in the system. We have also studied the kinetics of growing passive particle clusters. The mass of the largest cluster shows a much slower growth kinetics in contrast to conserved growth kinetics in ABP system. Our study provides an understanding of steady state and kinetics of passive particles in the presence of bigger active particles. The mixture can be thought of as effect of big microorganism moving in passive medium.

Domain Growth in the Active Model B: Critical and Off-critical Composition

We study the ordering kinetics of an assembly of {\it active Brownian particles} (ABPs) on a two-dimensional substrate. We use a coarse-grained equation for the composition order parameter $ψ({\bf r},t)$, where ${\bf r}$ and $t$ denote space and time, respectively. The model is similar to the {\it Cahn-Hilliard equation} or {\it Model B} (MB) for a conserved order parameter with an additional activity term of strength $λ$. This model has been introduced by Wittkowski et al., Nature Comm. {\bf 5}, 4351 (2014), and is termed {\it Active Model B} (AMB). We study domain growth kinetics and dynamical scaling of the correlation function for the AMB with critical and off-critical compositions. The quantity $P = \mbox{sign}(λ\times ψ_0)$ governs the asymptotic growth kinetics for the off-critical AMB, where $ψ_0$ denotes the average order parameter. For negative $P$, the domain growth law is the usual Lifshitz-Slyozov growth law with $L(t,λ) \sim t^{1/3}$. For positive $P$, the growth law shows a crossover to a novel growth law $L(t,λ) \sim t^{1/4}$. Further, the correlation function shows good dynamical scaling for the off-critical AMB but the scaling function has a dependency on $ψ_0$ and $λ$. We also study the effects of both additive and multiplicative noise on the AMB.

Inhomogeneous activity enhances density phase separation in active model B

We study the binary phase separation in active model B, on a two-dimensional substrate with inhomogeneous activity. The activity was introduced with a maximum value at the center of the box and spread as a Bivariate-Gaussian distribution as we move away from the center. The system was studied for three different intensities of the distribution. Towards the boundary of the box, activity is zero or the model is similar to the passive model B. We start from the random homogeneous distribution of density of particles, and the system evolves towards a structured distribution of density. With time, density starts to phase separately with maximum density at the center of the box and decreases as we move away from the center of the box. The width of the density profile at the center increases as a power lawexponentα(t) remains close between 2/3 to 3/4 up to some moderate time and then decays to zero in the steady state. Hence, our result shows the response of density in an active binary system with respect to the patterned substrate. It can be used to design devices useful for the trapping and segregation of active particles.

Ordering Kinetics in the Active Model B

We undertake a detailed numerical study of the {\it Active Model B} proposed by Wittkowski et al. [Nature Comm. {\bf 5}, 4351 (2014)]. We find that the introduction of activity has a drastic effect on the ordering kinetics. First, the domain growth law shows a crossover from the usual Lifshitz-Slyozov growth law for phase separation ($L \sim t^{1/3}$, where $t$ is the time) to a novel growth law ($L \sim t^{1/4}$) at late times. Second, the correlation function exhibits dynamical scaling for a given activity strength $λ$, but the scaling function depends on $λ$.

Dynamics of a collection of active particles on a two-dimensional periodic undulated surface

We study the dynamics of circular active particles (AP) on a two dimensional periodic undulated surface. Each particle has an internal energy mechanism which is modeled by an active friction force and it is controlled by an activity parameter $v_0$. It acts as negative friction if the speed of the particle is smaller than $v_0$ and normal friction otherwise. Surface undulation is modeled by the periodic undulation of fixed amplitude and wavelength and is measured in terms of a dimensionless ratio of amplitude and wavelength, $\bar{h}$. The dynamics of the particle is studied for different activities, $v_0$ and surface undulations (SU), $\bar{h}$. Three types of particle dynamics are observed on varying activity and SU. For small $v_0 \lesssim 0.1$ and $\bar{h}$ $\gtrsim 0.8$, particles remain confined in a surface minimum, for moderate $v_0 \lesssim \bar{h}$, dynamics of particle shows an intermediate subdiffusion to late time diffusion and for large $v_0 \gtrsim \bar{h}$, it shows initial superdiffusion to late time diffusion. For all $v_0$'s and $\bar{h} \lesssim 0.2$, the dynamics of particle, satisfies the Green-Kubo relation between the effective diffusivity and velocity auto-correlation function. Systematic deviation is found on increasing $\bar{h}$. Hence, an effective equilibrium can be established for a range of system parameters in this nonequilibirum system.

Polar flock with bond disorder

In this study, we introduce a minimal model for a collection of polar self-propelled particles (SPPs) on a two-dimensional substrate where each particle has a different ability to interact with its neighbours. The SPPs interact through a short-range alignment interaction and interaction strength of each particle is obtained from a uniform distribution. Moreover, the volume exclusion among the SPPs is taken care of by introducing a repulsive interaction among them. We characterise the ordered steady state and kinetics of the system for different strengths of the disorder. We find that the presence of the disorder does not destroy the usual long-range ordering in the system. To our surprise, we note that the density clustering is enhanced in the presence of the disorder. Moreover, the disorder leads to the formation of a random network of different interaction strengths, which makes the alignment weaker and it results in the slower dynamics. Hence, the disorder leads to more cohesion among the particles. Furthermore, we note that the kinetics of the ordered state remains unaffected in the presence of the disorder. Size of orientationally ordered domains and density clusters grow with time with dynamic growth exponents $z_{o} \sim 2$ and $z_ρ \sim 4$, respectively.

Active nematics with quenched disorder

We introduce a two-dimensional active nematic with quenched disorder. We write the coarse-grained hydrodynamic equations of motion for slow variables, viz. density, and orientation. Disorder strength is tuned from zero to large values. Results from the numerical solution of equations of motion as well as the calculation of two-point orientation correlation function using linear approximation show that the ordered steady-state follows a disorder-dependent crossover from quasi long-range order (QLRO) to short-range order (SRO). Such crossover is due to the pinning of +1/2 and -1/2 topological defects in the presence of finite disorder, which breaks the system in uncorrelated domains. Finite disorder slows the dynamics of +1/2 defect, and it leads to slower growth dynamics. The two-point correlation functions for the density and orientation fields show good dynamic scaling but no static scaling for the different disorder strengths. Our findings can motivate experimentalists to verify the results and find applications in living and artificial apolar systems in the presence of a quenched disorder.

Dynamics of a particle moving in a two dimensional Lorentz lattice gas

We study the dynamics of a particle moving in a square two-dimensional Lorentz lattice-gas. The underlying lattice-gas is occupied by two kinds of rotators, "right-rotator (R)" and "left-rotator (L)" and some of the sites are empty {\it{viz.}} vacancy "V".The density of $R$ and $L$ are the same and density of $V$ is one of the key parameters of our model. The rotators deterministically rotate the direction of a particle's velocity to the right or left and vacancies leave it unchanged. We characterise the dynamics of particle motion for different densities of vacancies. Since the system is deterministic, the particle forms a closed trajectory asymptotically. The probability of the particle being in a closed or open trajectory at time $t$ is a function of the density of vacancies. \textcolor{black}{The motion of the particle is {\it{uniform}} throughout in a fully occupied lattice. However, it is divided in two distinct phases in partially vacant lattices}: The first phase of the motion, which is the focus of this study, is characterised by anomalous diffusion and a power-law decay of the probability of being in an open trajectory. The second phase of the motion is characterised by subdiffusive motion and an exponential decay of the probability of being in an open trajectory. For lattices with a non-zero density of vacancies, the first phase of motion lasts for a longer period of time as the density of vacancies increases.

Speed inhomogeneity accelerates the information transfer in polar flock

A collection of self-propelled particles (SPPs) shows coherent motion and exhibits a true long range ordered (LRO) state in two dimensions. Various studies show that the presence of spatial inhomogeneities can destroy the usual long-range ordering in the system. However, the effects of inhomogeneity due to the intrinsic properties of the particles are barely addressed. In this paper we consider a collection of polar SPPs moving with inhomogeneous speed (IS) on a two dimensional substrate, which can arise due to varying physical strength of the individual particle. To our surprise, the IS not only preserves the usual long-range ordering present in the homogeneous speed models but also induces faster ordering in the system. Furthermore, The response of the flock to an external perturbation is also faster, compared to Vicsek like model systems, due to the frequent update of neighbors of each SPP in the presence of the IS. Therefore, our study shows that the IS can help in faster information transfer in the moving flock.

Nonquenched rotators ease flocking and memorise it

We introduce a minimal model for a two-dimensional polar flock with nonquenched rotators, and show that the rotators make the usual macroscopic long-range order of the flock more robust than the clean system. The rotators memorise the flock-information which helps in establishing the robustness. Moreover, the memory of the rotators assists in probing the moving flock. We also formulate a hydrodynamic framework for the microscopic model that makes our study comprehensive. Using linearised hydrodynamics, it is shown that the presence of such nonquenched heterogeneities increases the sound speeds of the flock. The enhanced sound speeds lead to faster convection of information and consequently the robust ordering in the system. We argue that similar nonquenched heterogeneities may be useful in monitoring and controlling large crowds.

Dynamics of particle moving in one dimensional Lorentz lattice gas

We study the dynamics of a particle moving in one-dimensional Lorentz lattice-gas where particle performs mainly three different kinds of motion {\it viz} ballistic motion, diffusion and confinement. There are two different types of scatterers, {\it viz} reflector and transmitters, randomly placed in the lattice. Reflectors are such that they reverse the particle's velocity direction and transmitters let it pass through. Scatterers also change their character with flipping probability $1-α$, once the particle interacts with a scatterer. Hence the system is defined by two sets of parameters, $r$, which is the initial density of reflector/transmitter and $α$. For $α=0$ and $α=1$ dynamics of the particle is purely deterministic else it is probabilistic. In the pure deterministic case dynamics of the particle is either propagation in one direction or confined between two near-by reflectors present. For the probabilistic case $α\ne 1$ and $\ne 0$, although the dynamics of particle shows anomalous diffusion where dynamics is faster, slower and comparable to normal diffusion on the variation of system parameters $(α, r)$, but the asymptotic behaviour of the particle is normal diffusion. We plot the phase diagram for the asymptotic behaviour, in the plane of $α$ and $r$.

Enhanced dynamics of active Brownian particles in periodic obstacle arrays and corrugated channels

We study the motion of an active Brownian particle (ABP) using overdamped Langevin dynamics on a two-dimensional substrate with periodic array of obstacles and in a quasi-one-dimensional corrugated channel comprised of periodically arrayed obstacles. The periodic arrangement of the obstacles enhances the persistent motion of the ABP in comparison to its motion in the free space. Persistent motion increases with the activity of the ABP. We note that the periodic arrangement induces directionality in ABP motion at late time, and it increases with the size of the obstacles. We also note that the ABP exhibits a super-diffusive dynamics in the corrugated channel. The transport property is independent of the shape of the channel; rather it depends on the packing fraction of the obstacles in the system. However, the ABP shows the usual diffusive dynamics in the quasi-one-dimensional channel with flat boundary.
