Significantly Enhanced Vacancy Diffusion in Mn-containing Alloys

Manipulating point defects for tailored macroscopic properties remains a formidable challenge in materials science. This study demonstrates a proof-of-principle for a universal law involving element Mn, significantly enhancing vacancy diffusion through an unprecedented anomalous Friedel Oscillations phenomenon, across most metals in the periodic table. The correlation between Mn-induced point-defect dynamic changes and intrinsic macro-properties is robustly validated through the first-principles theory and well-designed experiments. The physical origin stems from Mn's exceptionally large effective intra-elemental 3d electron interactions, surpassing the Coulomb attraction induced by vacancy and disrupting the electron screening effect. Given the ubiquitous nature of vacancies and their recognition as the most crucial defects influencing nearly all physical and mechanical properties of crystalline materials, this outcome may drive advances in a broad domain.

Privacy-preserving Federated Primal-dual Learning for Non-convex and Non-smooth Problems with Model Sparsification

Federated learning (FL) has been recognized as a rapidly growing research area, where the model is trained over massively distributed clients under the orchestration of a parameter server (PS) without sharing clients' data. This paper delves into a class of federated problems characterized by non-convex and non-smooth loss functions, that are prevalent in FL applications but challenging to handle due to their intricate non-convexity and non-smoothness nature and the conflicting requirements on communication efficiency and privacy protection. In this paper, we propose a novel federated primal-dual algorithm with bidirectional model sparsification tailored for non-convex and non-smooth FL problems, and differential privacy is applied for privacy guarantee. Its unique insightful properties and some privacy and convergence analyses are also presented as the FL algorithm design guidelines. Extensive experiments on real-world data are conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and much superior performance than some state-of-the-art FL algorithms, together with the validation of all the analytical results and properties.

UniCATS: A Unified Context-Aware Text-to-Speech Framework with Contextual VQ-Diffusion and Vocoding

The utilization of discrete speech tokens, divided into semantic tokens and acoustic tokens, has been proven superior to traditional acoustic feature mel-spectrograms in terms of naturalness and robustness for text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis. Recent popular models, such as VALL-E and SPEAR-TTS, allow zero-shot speaker adaptation through auto-regressive (AR) continuation of acoustic tokens extracted from a short speech prompt. However, these AR models are restricted to generate speech only in a left-to-right direction, making them unsuitable for speech editing where both preceding and following contexts are provided. Furthermore, these models rely on acoustic tokens, which have audio quality limitations imposed by the performance of audio codec models. In this study, we propose a unified context-aware TTS framework called UniCATS, which is capable of both speech continuation and editing. UniCATS comprises two components, an acoustic model CTX-txt2vec and a vocoder CTX-vec2wav. CTX-txt2vec employs contextual VQ-diffusion to predict semantic tokens from the input text, enabling it to incorporate the semantic context and maintain seamless concatenation with the surrounding context. Following that, CTX-vec2wav utilizes contextual vocoding to convert these semantic tokens into waveforms, taking into consideration the acoustic context. Our experimental results demonstrate that CTX-vec2wav outperforms HifiGAN and AudioLM in terms of speech resynthesis from semantic tokens. Moreover, we show that UniCATS achieves state-of-the-art performance in both speech continuation and editing.

Quantitative study of the pinning effect of the edge dislocation on domain wall motion in Barium Titanate thin films

Dislocation is a very important one-dimensional defect in ferroelectrics. This work introduces an easy and flexible model of implementing the edge dislocation by introducing eigenstrain at the interface, and it could be easily extended to incorporate the surface stress to refine the analysis of ferroelectric thin films. The influence of dislocations on the ferroelectric domain wall motion and hysteresis loop including the remanent polarization and coercive field using phase-field simulations is analyzed. The pinning effect of the dislocation on the domain wall motion is discussed and whether the domain wall is pined is the competition between the external loading and the magnitude of the burgers vector of the dislocation. This work could contribute to the understanding of the pining effect of the dislocation and provide guidance for the fabrication of ferroelectric thin films.

Safeguarding Medical Image Segmentation Datasets against Unauthorized Training via Contour- and Texture-Aware Perturbations

The widespread availability of publicly accessible medical images has significantly propelled advancements in various research and clinical fields. Nonetheless, concerns regarding unauthorized training of AI systems for commercial purposes and the duties of patient privacy protection have led numerous institutions to hesitate to share their images. This is particularly true for medical image segmentation (MIS) datasets, where the processes of collection and fine-grained annotation are time-intensive and laborious. Recently, Unlearnable Examples (UEs) methods have shown the potential to protect images by adding invisible shortcuts. These shortcuts can prevent unauthorized deep neural networks from generalizing. However, existing UEs are designed for natural image classification and fail to protect MIS datasets imperceptibly as their protective perturbations are less learnable than important prior knowledge in MIS, e.g., contour and texture features. To this end, we propose an Unlearnable Medical image generation method, termed UMed. UMed integrates the prior knowledge of MIS by injecting contour- and texture-aware perturbations to protect images. Given that our target is to only poison features critical to MIS, UMed requires only minimal perturbations within the ROI and its contour to achieve greater imperceptibility (average PSNR is 50.03) and protective performance (clean average DSC degrades from 82.18% to 6.80%).

Accurate Segmentation of Optic Disc And Cup from Multiple Pseudo-labels by Noise-aware Learning

Optic disc and cup segmentation plays a crucial role in automating the screening and diagnosis of optic glaucoma. While data-driven convolutional neural networks (CNNs) show promise in this area, the inherent ambiguity of segmenting objects and background boundaries in the task of optic disc and cup segmentation leads to noisy annotations that impact model performance. To address this, we propose an innovative label-denoising method of Multiple Pseudo-labels Noise-aware Network (MPNN) for accurate optic disc and cup segmentation. Specifically, the Multiple Pseudo-labels Generation and Guided Denoising (MPGGD) module generates pseudo-labels by multiple different initialization networks trained on true labels, and the pixel-level consensus information extracted from these pseudo-labels guides to differentiate clean pixels from noisy pixels. The training framework of the MPNN is constructed by a teacher-student architecture to learn segmentation from clean pixels and noisy pixels. Particularly, such a framework adeptly leverages (i) reliable and fundamental insight from clean pixels and (ii) the supplementary knowledge within noisy pixels via multiple perturbation-based unsupervised consistency. Compared to other label-denoising methods, comprehensive experimental results on the RIGA dataset demonstrate our method's excellent performance. NN-Defined Modulator: Reconfigurable and Portable Software Modulator on IoT Gateways

A physical-layer modulator is a vital component for an IoT gateway to map the symbols to signals. However, due to the soldered hardware chipsets on the gateway's motherboards or the diverse toolkits on different platforms for the software radio, the existing solutions either have limited extensibility or are platform-specific. Such limitation is hard to ignore when modulation schemes and hardware platforms have become extremely diverse. This paper presents a new paradigm of using neural networks as an abstraction layer for physical layer modulators in IoT gateway devices, referred to as NN-defined modulators. Our approach addresses the challenges of extensibility and portability for multiple technologies on various hardware platforms. The proposed NN-defined modulator uses a model-driven methodology rooted in solid mathematical foundations while having native support for hardware acceleration and portability to heterogeneous platforms. We conduct the evaluation of NN-defined modulators on different platforms, including Nvidia Jetson Nano and Raspberry Pi. Evaluations demonstrate that our NN-defined modulator effectively operates as conventional modulators and provides significant efficiency gains (up to $4.7\times$ on Nvidia Jetson Nano and $1.1\times$ on Raspberry Pi), indicating high portability. Furthermore, we show the real-world applications using our NN-defined modulators to generate ZigBee and WiFi packets, which are compliant with commodity TI CC2650 (ZigBee) and Intel AX201 (WiFi NIC), respectively.

From Instructions to Constraints: Language Model Alignment with Automatic Constraint Verification

User alignment is crucial for adapting general-purpose language models (LMs) to downstream tasks, but human annotations are often not available for all types of instructions, especially those with customized constraints. We observe that user instructions typically contain constraints. While assessing response quality in terms of the whole instruction is often costly, efficiently evaluating the satisfaction rate of constraints is feasible. We investigate common constraints in NLP tasks, categorize them into three classes based on the types of their arguments, and propose a unified framework, ACT (Aligning to ConsTraints), to automatically produce supervision signals for user alignment with constraints. Specifically, ACT uses constraint verifiers, which are typically easy to implement in practice, to compute constraint satisfaction rate (CSR) of each response. It samples multiple responses for each prompt and collect preference labels based on their CSR automatically. Subsequently, ACT adapts the LM to the target task through a ranking-based learning process. Experiments on fine-grained entity typing, abstractive summarization, and temporal question answering show that ACT is able to enhance LMs' capability to adhere to different classes of constraints, thereby improving task performance. Further experiments show that the constraint-following capabilities are transferable.

Seamless Virtual Reality with Integrated Synchronizer and Synthesizer for Autonomous Driving

Virtual reality (VR) is a promising data engine for autonomous driving (AD). However, data fidelity in this paradigm is often degraded by VR inconsistency, for which the existing VR approaches become ineffective, as they ignore the inter-dependency between low-level VR synchronizer designs (i.e., data collector) and high-level VR synthesizer designs (i.e., data processor). This paper presents a seamless virtual reality SVR platform for AD, which mitigates such inconsistency, enabling VR agents to interact with each other in a shared symbiotic world. The crux to SVR is an integrated synchronizer and synthesizer IS2 design, which consists of a drift-aware lidar-inertial synchronizer for VR colocation and a motion-aware deep visual synthesis network for augmented reality image generation. We implement SVR on car-like robots in two sandbox platforms, achieving a cm-level VR colocalization accuracy and 3.2% VR image deviation, thereby avoiding missed collisions or model clippings. Experiments show that the proposed SVR reduces the intervention times, missed turns, and failure rates compared to other benchmarks. The SVR-trained neural network can handle unseen situations in real-world environments, by leveraging its knowledge learnt from the VR space.

Suppress and Rebalance: Towards Generalized Multi-Modal Face Anti-Spoofing

Face Anti-Spoofing (FAS) is crucial for securing face recognition systems against presentation attacks. With advancements in sensor manufacture and multi-modal learning techniques, many multi-modal FAS approaches have emerged. However, they face challenges in generalizing to unseen attacks and deployment conditions. These challenges arise from (1) modality unreliability, where some modality sensors like depth and infrared undergo significant domain shifts in varying environments, leading to the spread of unreliable information during cross-modal feature fusion, and (2) modality imbalance, where training overly relies on a dominant modality hinders the convergence of others, reducing effectiveness against attack types that are indistinguishable sorely using the dominant modality. To address modality unreliability, we propose the Uncertainty-Guided Cross-Adapter (U-Adapter) to recognize unreliably detected regions within each modality and suppress the impact of unreliable regions on other modalities. For modality imbalance, we propose a Rebalanced Modality Gradient Modulation (ReGrad) strategy to rebalance the convergence speed of all modalities by adaptively adjusting their gradients. Besides, we provide the first large-scale benchmark for evaluating multi-modal FAS performance under domain generalization scenarios. Extensive experiments demonstrate that our method outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Source code and protocols will be released on https://github.com/OMGGGGG/mmdg.

LLMs Can Defend Themselves Against Jailbreaking in a Practical Manner: A Vision Paper

Jailbreaking is an emerging adversarial attack that bypasses the safety alignment deployed in off-the-shelf large language models (LLMs). A considerable amount of research exists proposing more effective jailbreak attacks, including the recent Greedy Coordinate Gradient (GCG) attack, jailbreak template-based attacks such as using "Do-Anything-Now" (DAN), and multilingual jailbreak. In contrast, the defensive side has been relatively less explored. This paper proposes a lightweight yet practical defense called SELFDEFEND, which can defend against all existing jailbreak attacks with minimal delay for jailbreak prompts and negligible delay for normal user prompts. Our key insight is that regardless of the kind of jailbreak strategies employed, they eventually need to include a harmful prompt (e.g., "how to make a bomb") in the prompt sent to LLMs, and we found that existing LLMs can effectively recognize such harmful prompts that violate their safety policies. Based on this insight, we design a shadow stack that concurrently checks whether a harmful prompt exists in the user prompt and triggers a checkpoint in the normal stack once a token of "No" or a harmful prompt is output. The latter could also generate an explainable LLM response to adversarial prompts. We demonstrate our idea of SELFDEFEND works in various jailbreak scenarios through manual analysis in GPT-3.5/4. We also list three future directions to further enhance SELFDEFEND.

Rate-Splitting with Hybrid Messages: DoF Analysis of the Two-User MIMO Broadcast Channel with Imperfect CSIT

Most of the existing research on degrees-of-freedom (DoF) with imperfect channel state information at the transmitter (CSIT) assume the messages are private, which may not reflect reality as the two receivers can request the same content. To overcome this limitation, we therefore consider the hybrid unicast and multicast messages. In particular, we characterize the optimal DoF region for the two-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) broadcast channel (BC) with imperfect CSIT and hybrid messages. For the converse, we establish a three-step procedure to exploit the utmost possible relaxation. For the achievability, since the DoF region is with specific three-dimensional structure regarding antenna configurations and CSIT qualities, we verify the existence or non-existence of corner point candidates via the feature of antenna configurations and CSIT qualities categorization and provide a hybrid message-aware rate-splitting scheme. Besides, we show that to achieve the strictly positive corner points, it is unnecessary to split the unicast messages into private and common parts. This implies adding a multicast message may mitigate the rate-splitting complexity.

Design and Visual Servoing Control of a Hybrid Dual-Segment Flexible Neurosurgical Robot for Intraventricular Biopsy

Traditional rigid endoscopes have challenges in flexibly treating tumors located deep in the brain, and low operability and fixed viewing angles limit its development. This study introduces a novel dual-segment flexible robotic endoscope MicroNeuro, designed to perform biopsies with dexterous surgical manipulation deep in the brain. Taking into account the uncertainty of the control model, an image-based visual servoing with online robot Jacobian estimation has been implemented to enhance motion accuracy. Furthermore, the application of model predictive control with constraints significantly bolsters the flexible robot's ability to adaptively track mobile objects and resist external interference. Experimental results underscore that the proposed control system enhances motion stability and precision. Phantom testing substantiates its considerable potential for deployment in neurosurgery.

OOP: Object-Oriented Programming Evaluation Benchmark for Large Language Models

Advancing automated programming necessitates robust and comprehensive code generation benchmarks, yet current evaluation frameworks largely neglect object-oriented programming (OOP) in favor of functional programming (FP), e.g., HumanEval and MBPP. To address this, our study introduces a pioneering OOP-focused benchmark, featuring 431 Python programs that encompass essential OOP concepts and features like classes and encapsulation methods. We propose a novel evaluation metric, pass@o, tailored for OOP, enhancing traditional pass@k measures. Our evaluation of 23 leading large language models (LLMs), including both general and code-specialized models, reveals three key insights: 1) pass@o offers a more relevant and comprehensive assessment for OOP code generation; 2) Despite excelling in FP, code-specialized LLMs like WizardCoder lag in OOP compared to models like ChatGPT; 3) The poor performance of all advanced LLMs on our OOP benchmark highlights a critical need for improvements in this field. Our benchmark and scripts are publicly released at: https://github.com/alphadl/OOP-eval.

Large Language Models for Stemming: Promises, Pitfalls and Failures

Text stemming is a natural language processing technique that is used to reduce words to their base form, also known as the root form. The use of stemming in IR has been shown to often improve the effectiveness of keyword-matching models such as BM25. However, traditional stemming methods, focusing solely on individual terms, overlook the richness of contextual information. Recognizing this gap, in this paper, we investigate the promising idea of using large language models (LLMs) to stem words by leveraging its capability of context understanding. With this respect, we identify three avenues, each characterised by different trade-offs in terms of computational cost, effectiveness and robustness : (1) use LLMs to stem the vocabulary for a collection, i.e., the set of unique words that appear in the collection (vocabulary stemming), (2) use LLMs to stem each document separately (contextual stemming), and (3) use LLMs to extract from each document entities that should not be stemmed, then use vocabulary stemming to stem the rest of the terms (entity-based contextual stemming). Through a series of empirical experiments, we compare the use of LLMs for stemming with that of traditional lexical stemmers such as Porter and Krovetz for English text. We find that while vocabulary stemming and contextual stemming fail to achieve higher effectiveness than traditional stemmers, entity-based contextual stemming can achieve a higher effectiveness than using Porter stemmer alone, under specific conditions.

FeB4RAG: Evaluating Federated Search in the Context of Retrieval Augmented Generation

Federated search systems aggregate results from multiple search engines, selecting appropriate sources to enhance result quality and align with user intent. With the increasing uptake of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) pipelines, federated search can play a pivotal role in sourcing relevant information across heterogeneous data sources to generate informed responses. However, existing datasets, such as those developed in the past TREC FedWeb tracks, predate the RAG paradigm shift and lack representation of modern information retrieval challenges. To bridge this gap, we present FeB4RAG, a novel dataset specifically designed for federated search within RAG frameworks. This dataset, derived from 16 sub-collections of the widely used \beir benchmarking collection, includes 790 information requests (akin to conversational queries) tailored for chatbot applications, along with top results returned by each resource and associated LLM-derived relevance judgements. Additionally, to support the need for this collection, we demonstrate the impact on response generation of a high quality federated search system for RAG compared to a naive approach to federated search. We do so by comparing answers generated through the RAG pipeline through a qualitative side-by-side comparison. Our collection fosters and supports the development and evaluation of new federated search methods, especially in the context of RAG pipelines.

Two-parameter estimation with single squeezed-light interferometer via double homodyne detection

The simultaneous two-parameter estimation problem in single squeezed-light Mach-Zehnder interferometer with double-port homodyne detection is investigated in this work. The analytical form of the two-parameter quantum Cramer-Bao bound defined by the quantum Fisher information matrix is presented, which shows the ultimate limit of the phase sensitivity will be further approved by the squeezed vacuum state. It can not only surpass the shot-noise limit, but also can even surpass the Heisenberg limit when half of the input intensity of the interferometer is provided by the coherent state and half by the squeezed light. For the double-port homodyne detection, the classical Fisher information matrix is also obtained. Our results show that although the classical Cramer-Rao bound does not saturate the quantum one, it can still asymptotically approach the quantum Cramer -Bao bound when the intensity of the coherent state is large enough. Our results also indicate that the squeezed vacuum state indeed can further improve the phase sensitivity. In addition, when half of the input intensity of the interferometer is provided by the coherent state and half by the squeezed light, the phase sensitivity obtained by the double-port homodyne detection can surpass the Heisenberg limit for a small range of the estimated phase.

Eliminating Information Leakage in Hard Concept Bottleneck Models with Supervised, Hierarchical Concept Learning

Concept Bottleneck Models (CBMs) aim to deliver interpretable and interventionable predictions by bridging features and labels with human-understandable concepts. While recent CBMs show promising potential, they suffer from information leakage, where unintended information beyond the concepts (either when concepts are represented with probabilities or binary states) are leaked to the subsequent label prediction. Consequently, distinct classes are falsely classified via indistinguishable concepts, undermining the interpretation and intervention of CBMs. This paper alleviates the information leakage issue by introducing label supervision in concept predication and constructing a hierarchical concept set. Accordingly, we propose a new paradigm of CBMs, namely SupCBM, which achieves label predication via predicted concepts and a deliberately-designed intervention matrix. SupCBM focuses on concepts that are mostly relevant to the predicted label and only distinguishes classes when different concepts are presented. Our evaluations show that SupCBM outperforms SOTA CBMs over diverse datasets. It also manifests better generality across different backbone models. With proper quantification of information leakage in different CBMs, we demonstrate that SupCBM significantly reduces the information leakage.
